Global investors see opportunities in nanotechnology in Singapore
2008-05-28 01:14:00
Global investors see opportunities in nanotechnology in Singapore By Timothy Ouyang, SINGAPORE: Global investors said they are seeing a lot of investment opportunities in nanotechnology opening up here in Singapore. The comment comes a day before the first ever NanoEquity Asia conference kicks off in Singapore. The conference is aimed at facilitating investment in nanotech start-ups and SMEs from around the region. It was touted to be the next explosive growth area after information technology here in Singapore and nano-technology is starting to have a huge impact on a wide range of industries. Marco Beckmann, CEO, Nanostart Investments, said: “We see products, new technologies that are just about to enter the market and they’re coming right out of Singapore. And sometimes, we see so many fast things that are developing here in Singapore that’s very promising and interesting for us.” Investors said there’s a growing trend globally to look for inves...
Nanotechnology and Cutting Edge Design Combine to Create Yamaha Exoskelton
2008-05-26 14:00:00
California professor, Bumsuk Lim, has taken his passion for motorcycle riding and developed a new motorcycle design class, enviro-motorcycles. One of the first designs to come from this is an exoskelton style project vehicle called ‘Deus Ex Machina’ (God Out of a Machine). It is an electric, single passenger, vertically parking, and wearable motorcycle. The bike has a human muscular-skeletal system that allows the rider to become one with the vehicle. Seven artificial vertebrae behind the helmet support the rider’s head and control of the bike is done with the body via 36 pneumatic muscles and 2 linear actuators. Power comes from doped NanoPhosphate batteries and ultra-capacitors, with an in-wheel motor that gives acceleration of 60 mph in 3 seconds. Recharging takes 15 minutes with a cycle time of 60 minutes and a limited top speed of 75 mph.   Source:  azonano LATER Technorati Tags: RilySi,Ride it like you stole i...

Promising New Nanotechnology for Spinal Cord Injury
2008-04-02 22:13:00
A spinal cord injury often leads to permanent paralysis and loss of sensation below the site of the injury because the damaged nerve fibers can't regenerate. The nerve fibers or axons have the capacity to grow again, but don?t because they're blocked by scar tissue that develops around the injury. Northwestern University researchers have shown that a nano-engineered gel inhibits the formation of scar tissue at the injury site and enables the severed spinal cord fibers to regenerate and grow. The gel is injected as a liquid into the spinal cord and self -assembles into a scaffold that supports the new nerve fibers as they grow up and down the spinal cord, penetrating the site of the injury. When the gel was injected into mice with a spinal cord injury, after six weeks the animals had a greatly enhanced ability to use their hind legs and walk. The research is published today in the April 2 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience."We are very excited about this," said lead author John Kes...

Nanotechnology And The Nokia Morph Concept
2008-03-31 08:06:00
I do not really know if the new technology developed by Nokia Research Center and the University of Cambridge is called ?Morph? accidentally or on purpose. I mean, take a look at the phone, the way it is almost bent in to a circle and the color of the entire thing. The glowing green, the awesome 3-D flexibility and the ability to change shape at will- all adding up to a world out of ?The Matrix?. So I guess Nokia named it after ?Morpheus?, the man who gave Neo to all of us. So, finally someone is paying a tribute to Morpheus; great news indeed! Morph was launched alongside the ?Design and the Elastic Mind? exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. So basically you can change it in to a circle, a sphere and maybe even a cone to put your ice cream...
Future applications for mobile devices using nanotechnology

Researchers dream up mobile chameleon deviceNokia shows future applications for mobile devices using nanotechnologyImagine tapping out text messages on a device the size of an index card and as flat as a piece of paper, then folding it in thirds to hold it to your ear and make a phone call. Refold it in a slightly different shape and wrap it around your wrist, where it becomes a watch and also communicates with an ear bud that lets you talk hands free.Nokia researchers, along with researchers at the University of Cambridge in England, have created an animated video describing such a vision for mobile devices, which could come in the future through nanotechnology developments. The animation shows practical applications for several specific types of work that the scientists are developing based on their nanotechnology research, said Tapani Ryhanen, head of multimedia devices research at the Nokia Research Center. The concept video was created at the prodding of New York's Museum of Mo...

Molecular Nanovalves- Nanotechnology for Storing Gas
2008-02-05 17:46:00
Scientists in University of Calgary, have produced a novel approach to capture and store gases from the environment. It is said that this approach eliminates the use of special storage tanks and security concerns which are highly necessary in storing gases with high densities. In this technique, a unique solid structure, made by modifying a chemical material called barium organotrisulfonate is used as a storage material. The material consists of a series of open channels which can be converted in to a collection of closed air tight chambers when filled with air. This conversion is done by heating the material—a quick process that encloses the nanovalves in the material. To release the trapped gases, water is added to the material to re-open the closed nanovalves."The process is highly controllable and because we're not breaking any strong chemical bonds, the material is completely recyclable and can be used indefinitely," says George Shimizu, a professor in Chemistry at University...

Real Estate and Nanotechnology
2008-01-25 20:28:00
Nanotechnology is in its early stage of research and development today, much like the semiconductor industry was in the late 1950s and 1960s. This new technology has the potential to impact the global markets positively. Within the last five years, many financial institutions have become excited about the prospects of capitalizing on this technology. Nanotechnology is the concept of restructuring molecular properties in trace elements smaller than atoms. Here is an example of its size, a nanometer is one billionth of a meter, when compared to a sheet of paper it takes 100,000 nanometers to represent one sheet of paper in thickness. The diameter of human DNA is approximately in the 2.5 nanometer range, and red blood cells are approximately 2.5 micrometers in size. In the near future, the laws of physics will be manipulated to easily reconstruct fundamental building blocks of natural substances. This technology is in the infancy stage of practical application; however, financial inve...

Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology

Eric Drexler, "Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology"?????:???????Anc-hor (September 16, 1987) | ISBN:0385199732 | 320 pages | PDF | 3,4 MbNanotechnology, or molecular technology, involves the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules, something the human body already does.In Engines of Creation , Drexler attempts to predict, justify, quantify, and caution us about this important new field in engineering. His book could have been the first and foremost discussion of this fascinating subject. But Drexler strays from the topic with annoying regularity. He devotes too little space to the possibilities of nanotechnology and too much to esoteric and opinionated discussions of philosophy, politics, information science, defense, human relations, etc. Nanotechnology will indeed become a reality, and the public needs to be informed. It is therefore unfortunate that Engines of Creation was not written more clearly or directly. Kurt O. Baumgartner, International Minerals & ...
