Another encounter case comes to haunt Modi govt
2008-04-11 05:44:00 AHMEDABAD: The ghost of another encounter is set to haunt the Gujarat government, after the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case in which 15 police officers are behind bars. Sadiq Jamal Mehtar, 25, of Bhavnagar, was killed in an encounter in Naroda area of Ahmedabad on January 13, 2003 under suspicious circumstances. Inspired by the revelations in the Sohrabuddin case, his brother, Sabbir Mehtar, challenged the encounter in the Gujarat High Court last year, in a petition that brings out loopholes in the case. The state government has been dragging its feet over filing an affidavit in response to this petition. Sabbir's petition says senior police officers like additional director general of police P P Pandey, DIG D G Vanzara and others be booked and the investigation handed over to CBI or any other agency. Vanzara is already in jail in the Sohrabuddin case. A major evidence against the police is that the cartridges found were of .38 bore while the gun found in Sadiq's hand at the enco...
Modi eying GCA post
2008-04-05 07:16:00 AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah is exerting to oust Gujarat Cricket Association chief, and Congressman, Narhari Amin only to help Narendra Modi inconspicuously take over the cash-crammed body. The wily strategy was revealed to DNA by a cricket administrator who had recently moved a no-confidence motion against Amin in the Central Board of Cricket Ahmedabad (CBCA), the most powerful affiliate of the GCA, based in Ahmedabad. And DNA has learnt that once the chief minister is sure that he can garner the required numbers to take over the GCA, he may openly step into the ring. The official said that Modi?s presence at the GCA?s helm will add impetus to the effort of Arun Jaitley, a BJP stalwart, to increase their (BJP) influence in the BCCI. Jaitley is currently the president of the Delhi District Cricket Association. ?The chief minister is very close to Jaitley,? the official said. ?And if Modi comes to power at the GCA, it will certainly help the former law minister and BJP as...

Narendra Modi unstoppable
2007-12-23 14:59:00 Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat who won a third term in office on Sunday, believes he is a messiah tasked with ensuring his state remains among India's most developed. He is either adored or abhorred, held in awe or shunned as a pariah. But whichever way he is treated, Modi, 57, has ensured he is one politician India cannot ignore. On Sunday, he showed why. Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were forecast to have only a narrow edge ahead of Gujarat's Dec. 11 and Dec. 16 polls with Congress, which is in power centrally, snapping at his heels. But the results surpassed expectations even of party managers in New Delhi, with the BJP winning or leading in 119 of the total 182 seats, compared to 127 in 2002. "Narendra Modi has immense credibility with the people of Gujarat," said Arun Jaitley, a senior BJP leader and party strategist for the state. "Here is a man who is honest, he is obsessed with what he does, he is committed to the...

Gujarat Polls 2007 - Media bias against Narendra Modi
2007-11-27 22:30:00 Offstumped is marking the first in a series of posts from now till the counting of votes as Gujarat conducts elections to the State Legislative Assembly. So how is the battleground in Gujarat shaping up ? More than a month back when the Congress with great enthusiasm celebrated the arrival of its heir apparent Rahul Gandhi with juvenile cricketing metaphors, more than one Congressman said it would be Rahul Gandhi versus Narendra Modi. The heir apparent meanwhile seems have gone into hibernation after promising “rapid fire talking points“, “booklets on Rama Sethu” while calling for “accountability” and “meritocracy” in the Congress. In fact it needed the Uttar Pradesh Police to conjure up kidnap plots to bring back the media spotlight on the heir apparent since his lackadaisical AICC speech. So where is Rahul Gandhi and is he up to the challenge in Gujarat ? In fact so lacking in punch is the Congress campaign in Gujarat that the only h...
" Jai Shri Ram" the password to kill

Age: 50 something Nationality: Indian, Gujarat Claim to fame: The engineer to 2002?s Gujarat massacre February 2002, allegedly an angry Muslim mob torched a train which resulted in the killing of 58 innocent Hindu passengers which gave birth to what they call; ?the worst Hindu Muslim clash? in the history of India. According to the official statistics; 254 Hindus and 790 Muslims were killed, with 223 more missing. Thousands of cases are still pending in the Indian courts and state inquiry committees which are related to these riots. Their is nothing new about Hindu Muslim riots; these riots are tactfully created by any one of the two extreme parties to meet their political and social desires. But this incident is quite different from past incidents that involved the clash of the two religions. First of all the tragic scale of the devastation is monstrously huge and it puts a big question mark on the secular claims of the biggest democracy in...
