Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards and NASCAR make headlines at Kansas Speedway.
2008-10-01 07:49:00 Heading into Kansas Speedway, the track had already made noise by announcing that they are going to ask for a second cup date after they just got approved for a hotel and casino, would they get it?Looking at the race itself, a race that was once a boring thing to watch, not any more, in NASCAR, it is said that with all new tracks or new surfaces, it will get better with age, Richmond did, Bristol shore did and guess what, Kansas did as well, interesting third chase race, it was better than Texas earlier this year, however that’s not saying much, but amazingly enough, there was two, three-groves including running up to wall to work with which does make the race better for passing, passing the key to good race at any racetrack, if drivers can’t pass a car, you have a parade, or Formula 1 for the most part. However nothing would have prepared me for the final 5 laps of this one, a race that shaped up to have a classic duel between Carl Edwards and the leader Jimmie Johnson, I watche...
Greg Biffle doubles up as Kyle Busch doubles down in 2nd NASCAR Sprint Cup
2008-09-22 01:22:00 What a way to start the chase, first, fans saw a good race at New Hampshire, that added some much needed excitement to the chase and revealed not only a surprise chase contender in Greg Biffle, but yielded a dominate driver, Kyle Busch to 34th position, so how do you top that one, you enter the concrete high-banked 1 mile Dover speedway, which delivered one exciting race.I would best describe a race at Dover as “heaven and a nightmare all in one lap” and that’s what came out of my mouth, I couldn’t believe it, it all came down to the final 40 laps and normally at Dover, you don’t see more than two cars racing that close together, fighting for the victory, so imagine this race fans surprise, when with 40 laps to go, there was not only two cars racing for the lead, but 5 cars all under a blanket, racing for the victory, you had Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson all battle for the lead. I thought for a moment there, Biffle and Kenseth wit...
“My Take” What will the final 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points stan
2008-09-16 23:58:00 (Photo Credit: Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR via NASCAR PR)First, let me first say that I created this list before Sunday’s race at New Hampshire, it was in response to last Sunday night’s WindTunnel question of the week, What will the final 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points standings be? They asked to send the list in by Thursday and this is the list I sent in and am sticking with, however if I could change one, it would be Greg Biffle. When it comes to this as a fan, I’m picking Dale Earnhardt Jr., however staying neutral, no fan favorites, going by numbers, I am picking the two-time Sprint-Nextel Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson, he’s strong, he comes on at this time of the year and Jimmie, Chad Knaus and the entire #48 team is a championship contending team week in and week out, they are the team to beat. Second would be Carl Edwards, great year for Edwards and if he can stay away from penalties, he should be just fine.So what about Kyle, “You have to loss ...

What happened to the open wheel invasion in NASCAR and is the Cup Series Si
2008-09-03 21:18:00 What a difference not even a full season in the cup series has made when it comes to the open wheel invasion, there we were late last season talking about the sudden rash of open wheel drivers turning and burning for a shot at racing here in NASCAR, where not only the big money is, but the big exposure is, some of the car owners in NASCAR couldn’t put together deals fast enough to sign that next open wheel driver turned stock car driver in the Cup Series. This all started with Ganassi a couple years ago in Chicagoland announcing that he has signed the former Indy 500 winner, IRL champion and F1 star Juan Montoya to driver here in NASCAR for his raceteam. Montoya was looking for better racing then the follow the leader of Formula 1. Then a year later, it was Patrick Carpentier being signed over GEM, Dario Franchitti becoming Montoya’s teammate, Sam Hornish Jr. leaving his IRL ride to come over to NASCAR at Penske Racing, of course he stayed with the same organzation, and of course...
NASCAR Nationwide Series makes history racing on rain tires at Circuit Gill
2008-08-03 02:35:00 Photo by Gregory ShamusGetty Images for NASCAROne part of NASCAR that I enjoy is road course racing, whether it’s at Watkins Glen or Sonoma (the course layout needs to be updated…) and that goes for racing in Montreal and for the second straight year of the NASCAR Nationwide Series going north of the border to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, I was left surprised. Last season, it was Robby Gordon vs. Marcos Ambrose which ended with Ambrose turning Gordon and then Gordon returning the favor by taking out Ambrose with nether driver winning (Kevin Harvick won). However, with that all said, nothing would have prepared me for what type of racing we saw earlier today, according to ESPN’s broadcast, it was history in the making as for the first time ever, the NASCAR Nationwide Series would run a race on rain tires. It’s been a long time since I have seen NASCAR in any series race (more like practice or qualify) in the rain, the first one that came to mind was years old back...

Road Course racing isn’t what it use to be in the NASCAR Cup Series, but
2008-06-23 19:40:00 (Photo Credit: Robert Laberge/Getty Images for NASCAR)For the first time this season, it was the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series turn to embark on a different type of adventure leaving the oval tracks behind for the art of turning left and right on the road course at Infineon Raceway located in the beautiful Sonoma Valley in Northern California (wine country) and what a sight it is.For some reason or another I always seem to look forward to all of the road course races, whether it’s in the Sonoma Valley or up at Watkins Glen in New York, it’s a different type of racing that is a welcome treat to watch, racing at Infineon is always a challenge for NASCAR drivers which does introduce a new breed of drivers known as road course specialists.Road course specialists are called upon twice a year for a couple of reasons, however now it’s not really simply for victories, but its more for car owners trying to either keep their car from falling outside of the top 35 or get them in the top 35 an...
Former NASCAR official files $250 million lawsuit
2008-06-10 12:06:00 A former racing official is suing NASCAR for $250 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination. Mauricia Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector responsible for certifying cars in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series from January 2005 until she was fired last October. Grant alleged she was referred to as "Nappy Headed Mo" and "Queen Sheba," by co-workers, was often told she worked on "colored people time," and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan. In addition, Grant said she was subjected to sexual advances from male co-workers, two of whom allegedly exposed themselves to her, and graphic and lewd jokes. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, lists multiple incidents of alleged sexual harassment and alleged racial discrimination beginning when she was hired in January 2005 thru her O...

Should NASCAR consider one Cup date per track for the future NASCAR Cup Ser
2008-06-06 00:17:00 Now let me state the obvious, I am a huge NASCAR fan that has been watching the sport since the early 1990’s, I’ve watched drivers like Jeff Gordon make his first Cup Series start at the 1992 Hooters 500 in Atlanta, while at the same time, same race, watched Richard Petty in his last race. Since those days in the NASCAR, there has been a lot of changes to the NASCAR landscaping which has included not only adding several racetracks, but also the removal of North Wilkesboro and Rockingham just to name a few.In recent years or even recent weeks, the talk has been centered around not only NASCAR vs. the Kentucky Speedway with them wanting a Cup date while NASCAR saying that that market already has several dates, but shortening the schedule which brings up many new issues and now with souring gasoline and diesel prices, NASCAR and track owners are finding themselves with empty seats, but yet at the same time, higher television ratings which I’m not surprised with considering the ra...
Despite blue toes, Speed finding foothold in NASCAR
2008-06-05 14:06:00 Talk about some fancy footwork. On the plane to Dover, Del., for last week’s Craftsman Truck Series event, rookie NASCAR driver Scott Speed took time out for a pedicure — complete with toenails painted blue to match his Red Bull-backed vehicle. Riding to the 1-mile racetrack, he told crew chief Doug Wolcott that his feet felt so good, he’d probably have better throttle control. "You’ve obviously never experienced the joy of having someone take care of your feet," said Speed, a former Formula One driver who still maintains some European tastes. "It was quite amazing, actually. My feet were very, very soft, very beautiful actually, by my standards. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it." More Scott Speed Speed’s style here to stay Speed takes Dover checkers Video: The finish at Dover Video: Speed in Victory Lane And don’t knock Speed, the sometimes flaky, always entertaining, and definitely promising ...

Lloyd Moore, NASCAR’s oldest driver, dies at 95
2008-05-19 13:05:00 Lloyd Moore, a NASCAR pioneer who ran 49 races between 1949 — the first year of what is now the Sprint Cup Series — and 1955, died Sunday. He was 95. Lloyd Moore, left, with Bill Rexford in 1950. Moore posted 13 top-fives and 23 top-10s with one win, at Winchester, Ind., on Oct. 15, 1950. Moore, who lived in the Frewsburg, N.Y., house in which he was born on June 8, 1912, also died in the same home. A school bus driver in the early 1930s, Moore also worked as a mechanic in a Studebaker garage. He made his NASCAR debut on Oct. 2, 1949, at Heidelberg Raceway in Pittsburgh, Pa., Moore finished sixth behind Lee Petty. "I was saddened to learn of the passing of Lloyd Moore yesterday," seven-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty said in a statement. "He was a joy to be around. Lloyd was a connection to origin of NASCAR. Talking to him was like taking a trip down memory lane, for me, because he raced against my dad. I still have memories of those rac...

17/05/2008: Nascar Sprint All-Star Challenge (Lowe)
2008-05-18 12:04:00 Kyle Busch felt like he gave one away Saturday night, and Carl Edwards was already stewing on how he would spend the winner's $1 million purse. Greg Biffle was poised for a Sunday stroll to Victory Lane. But when the checkers flew over the Sprint All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway, the guy who had planned to watch the race from his couch with a few cold beers was standing in the winner's circle, drenched in a few dozen cold beers. See, Kasey Kahne wouldn't even have been in the main event were it not for an online fan vote, one that propels the highest vote-getter with a still-drivable car in the qualifying Showdown into the big-money game. But there he was, starting shotgun on the 24-car field. By the end of the first 25-lap segment he'd driven to 13th position. By Lap 50 he was eighth. At the end of the third segment he was seventh. And on the final pit stop with 25 laps remaining, crew chief Kenny Francis opted for fuel only, giving Kahne crucial track position ...
Has NASCAR finally had enough with this new modification “crabby” Cup S
2008-05-18 07:32:00 For the past couple of weeks, numerous media, drivers including Jeff Gordon (and here), teams and fans have noticed this new tread in how to get this COT Cup Series car to handle better with adjusting the rear end so the COT car turns better in the corners, but goes sideways down the straightaway’s and in a world were NASCAR is penalizing so many drivers and teams for messing with the COT, how is this passing every inspection? This picture of the #77-Sam Hornish Jr. and #84-AJ, if you look closely at the rear tires, you can see something is completely off and if you watched last week at Darlington and last night’s All-Star race, you could see how bad it was with the rear end, I thought I watching drifting for a moment there and it wasn’t just on those two cars, but also with all five Roush-Fenway cars, other Fords, Dodges and Toyota’s are all doing this at most tracks from Charlotte and Darlington to Texas. Now I understand that all drivers and teams are looking for an advant...

2008-05-18 04:54:00 You know, last month I wrote a controversy article asking the question, should the NASCAR All-Star race be moved? My whole look at this was moving the All-Star race to a racetrack that either doesn’t already have a Cup Series date or only has one Cup Series date. At Least to me, the All-Star is a lot like a Cup date, it’s huge, it for the most part draws in record number of fans and even though I still believe that the All-Star race should be on a short-track like Iowa Speedway (but not that far away), I understand why the all-star race is so successful in Charlotte, it’s home. Over 90% of the teams are located in and around the Concord and Charlotte area, plus Humpy Wheeler does do a good job putting on a good show, now if they could only fix the fall charlotte Cup Series race, maybe that should go instead. So with that said, what an emotional weekend, hats off to Matt Crafton as he picked up his first Truck Series victory in 178 starts, this is for everyone including the fans...

2008-05-15 23:34:00 With once again the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte playing host to this coming weekend’s NASCAR All-Star race which will not only include the Sprint Showdown qualifier race that last year had both the winner Martin Truex Jr. and the second place driver Johnny Sauter a slot in the All-Star event, followed by the main event which for 2008 has an updated format Sprint All-Star Race that now has four 25 lap segments – 100 laps of beating and banging side-by-side racing that hopefully is better than last year which in the end Kevin Harvick held off Jimmie Johnson to win the Nextel All-Star Challenge. With that said, there is a new element to this year’s All-Star event, during the preshow before the Sprint Showdown, fans will be treated to a Burnout and donut contest. This is something new, normally fans are treated to a burnout, donut or something once a driver wins an event, but not before an event, so this should be interesting considering I’ve never seen a burnout and don...
