Pony Cars and NASCAR
2009-09-11 13:00:00
With the Car of Tomorrow redesign underway in NASCAR's second-tier Nationwide Series, there's been a lot of wild speculation about whether the Big Three might seize the opportunity to introduce their newest crop of pony cars to stock car racing. It's not as far-fetched as you might thin
Hot Version 23 - Keiichi Tsuchiya does NASCAR
2009-07-13 02:29:00
Looking thru some old Hot Version videos, I was surprised to come across a very old one that has Keiichi Tsuchiya earning his NASCAR license at Charlotte Motor Speedway, then traveling to Watkins Glen. Despite my disdain for all things NASCAR, I was very interested to see this. I noted that he does not speak English - or at least didn't in 1996. I also didn't realize that he is in his 50s - look at his birthdate below (Wikipedia incorrectly claims it as 1957). If you collect the Best Motorings and the related videos (Hot Version, BMI, BM Platinum, etc) you'll see a lot of him in his early days. The same issue, #23, also has a track comparison test of an early Evo versus an STi.
Carl Long’s penalty reduced to 8-race suspension, but NASCAR still in dan
2009-06-18 21:31:00
Welcome back ladies and gentleman, well I guess third time is a charm, the reason why I say that is this is the third time I have written on this Carl Long penalty from the first article I wrote here on RaceDriven called “NASCAR: Should we expect that this record penalty against Carl Long will be the normal penalty for everybody?”, then at the beginning of the month (June 2009) after the NASCAR appeals board heard the penalty and only reduced the suspension to the Cup Series, I wrote on this for a second time in an article I called “NASCAR and the appeals board gets it wrong with the Carl Long penalty. So here we are again for the third and last installment because there’s no other options, since then after an unsuccessful appeal with the appeals board, Carl Long filed a final appeal with the Stock Car Racing commissioner Charles Strang and that final appeal was heard on Monday in Chicago, yesterday, the commissioner ruled and only reduced the suspension from 12-races to eigh...
It’s over in Dover for NASCAR on FOX for the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Serie
2009-06-13 06:15:00
I know that I am a little late to the party, however you know me, I like to make a grand entrance, anyway, in the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the first 13 races from the Daytona 500 to the Dover 400 are broadcasted on FOX. Over that time, while the racing has been good to watch with the exceptions of a few races that just didn’t go so well, the TV ratings have seen a double-digit drop in most cases.I have to say, in watching all 13 races which included a rain-shortened Daytona 500 won by Matt Kenseth, the Monday rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 won by David Reutimann to the Southern 500, Phoenix cup race, both won by Mark Martin, and the Aaron’s 499 that included two Big One’s, Carl Edwards fling through the air into the outside catch fence and a last lap, tri-oval pass for the lead with Brad Keselowski capturing his very first Cup Series victory, the television broadcasts have been pretty good, of course some better than others. In watching all of those races, I have to say tha...

2009-06-01 22:12:00
I guess I am a little bit late to the party, but you know I had to make my grand entrance in the only way I know how, anyway, over the past week, the talk in NASCAR has centered around the latest first time winner David Reutimann and how he won this first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career victory last Monday at the Coca-Cola 600.Now last weekend was one of the biggest Motorsports weekends all season long and just so happen to be the longest with the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 all on the same day, however while the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500 did go off as scheduled, but weren’t the races that should have shined, the Coca-Cola 600 had to be postponed until Monday.I had been looking forward to the Coke 600 as season long and unfortunately it just didn’t go off as anyone expected. Monday was really no better with the one and off rain showers that plagued the race from going full out all day long. After a good NASCAR All-Star race with this ne...
NASCAR: Should we expect that this record penalty against Carl Long will be
2009-05-24 01:17:00
NASCAR has hands down a record penalty to driver Carl Long, the owner and crew chief of the #46 in the NASCAR Cup Series that in my eyes was warranted, but too extreme.First let me say that on the other issue in NASCAR right now, I am not going to comment on the Jeremy Mayfield vs. NASCAR issue which will most likely turn into a lawsuit, I don’t comment on lawsuits. Second, as for NASCAR’s substance abuse policy, as a fan of this sport, I believe NASCAR needs to come clean, be straight and crystal clear with everybody on what NASCAR is looking for (banned substance list), the process, everything, transparent if you will. With that said, so far in 2009, most teams have gotten the message that when it comes to the NASCAR COT racecar, it is a black and white issue, you are either green for good to go or red for infraction, if you found to have a car infraction, you should expect penalties (fines, docked points and/or suspensions) either now or next week.Over the past couple of years...
The history continues in the 25th NASCAR All-Star race as Tony Stewart wins
2009-05-17 05:40:00
Armed with soda, chips, chicken breasts, BBQ sauce, snacks and a one seat, it’s a night to sit back, relax, leave the remote alone and just watch a sprint race on television, yes I am talking about the only night that there is no points on the line (not counting the Shootout at Daytona) the NASCAR All-Star race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. While I can do without the Shootout at Daytona, in my eyes, the All-Star race is a must have. This is a night that there are no points on the line, no points racing, it’s an all out sprint race and the winner, the one who survivors wins a $1 Million Dollars. What I really can’t believe is that this is the 25th NASCAR All-Star race, the first thought is NASCAR actually kept this race all this time, of course time changes most events in life, and the All-Star race is no different. In 1985, the All-Star race had a simple format, around 10 cars started, 70 laps that included a mandatory pit stop and winner takes all.I watched the highlights of the ...
Critics Say NASCAR Diversity Not a Priority
2009-05-11 05:40:00
Author: Todd A. Smith It was always Joe Henderson III’s dream to become a successful NASCAR driver. He entered NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity (D4D) program with hopes of cracking a barrier that remains in place for most African American drivers. According to New York Times article published in 2006, Henderson was under contract from 2005 to ...
My Take: What if NASCAR qualifying is cancelled and what about the 2009 All
2009-05-08 03:10:00
Whether it’s NASCAR, Motorsports, Automobiles or more entertainment here on RaceDriven.com, I bring you my opinion (because that is what blogging is – someone’s take on any subject) in style, so let’s get started. In NASCAR, just about every day even in the off season, there seems to be a new discussion on just about any topic in NASCAR from on-track action to the off-track action and today is no different. As a blogger, writer and NASCAR fan, there are always issues facing NASCAR, every decision NASCAR makes is going to be meant with both positive and negative reaction and the latest discussions are just the tip of the iceberg from this past month.1. How to set the grid if NASCAR qualifying is cancelled or washed out.As a NASCAR fan, I hate to see qualifying get washed out due to weather or cancelled for any reason, right now, if qualifying is cancelled, NASCAR will set the starting lineup by owner’s points and for some drivers who are currently not in the top 35 and are g...

2009-04-30 09:36:00
As a NASCAR fan that has been watching and for the most part enjoying the sport (yes the sport does like most things in life have issues) for a good 17 years now, both Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway are among the most exciting racing in the sport, but not the only excitement. I love short track racing like Bristol, Martinsville, Richmond, and yes Phoenix and New Hampshire are getting to be exciting races with this new COT cars in the Cup Series.Restrictor plate racing in mind eyes is a heart-stopping, yet hard to watch at times type (or form) of racing in NASCAR. Let me state the obvious, I am not a huge restrictor plate racing fan but while I don’t hate this type of racing, for the most part, I don’t like it too much either. I would describe restrictor plate racing as a giant chess match and at the same time, a game of survival, you don’t win one of these races, you survival the races, you just came in first in the game of survival. (It’s like wi...

Whether it’s NASCAR, Motorsports, Automobiles or more entertainment here on RaceDriven.com, I bring you my opinion (because that is what blogging is – someone’s take on any subject) in style, so let’s get started.1. Topping the list from this past Saturday night’s Subway 500 race for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in Phoenix has to Mark Martin, Martin grabbed the pole for race, lead 157 of the 312 laps and captured his first victory since 2005 (Kansas), this was also his first win with Hendrick Motorsports.I highlighted this one for a few reasons, mainly due to as a NASCAR fan who has been following the sport for over 17 years now, I not only have my favorite drivers that I watch every race like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart, but there are also those drivers like Jeff Burton and Mark Martin that I have respect, so seeing Mark Martin driving for Hendrick Motorsports and get his first victory in since 2005 was an incredible sight to see, he and that entire #5 team deserv...
First four races, five drivers to watch so far in the 2009 NASCAR Cup Serie
2009-03-16 19:00:00
As I (a NASCAR fan, blogger, writer) sits here the Monday after this past weekend’s NASCAR off weekend where I spent most of Sunday writing articles for RaceDriven.com and watching DVD’s, you know, Cars, Smokey and the Bandit, the Italian Job, and of course Jeff Dunham, I’ve learned several different things over the course of the past four weeks in NASCAR.After a very boring and long off season, it was perfect to kick off the 2009 NASCAR Cup Series season with seeing the green flag wave at Daytona and hearing those famous words “Boogity, Boogity, Boogity, Let’s go racin’ boys”, now we are four races in or four weeks into the season, I’m still excited, but what happened over the past four weeks in NASCAR? What five drivers to watch starting this coming weekend at Bristol, Martinsville and beyond?First what a group of races we have had so far in 2009, we started the 2009 season off with none other than the 51st Daytona 500, a race that I describe in three parts “Firs...

2009-03-11 08:30:00
A picture is worth a thousand words and this picture shows both discussions in details with #47 gas man chased after his driver's loose wheel, some empty seats on the front straightaway during the Cup race and Clint Bowyer in the #33 BB&T Chevrolet racing at full speed, wow what a picture. (Photo Credit: NASCAR.com via Yahoo! Sports)The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway this past weekend debate lives on with two key discussions.1) Marcos Ambrose’s crew member did what during Sunday’s Cup Series race? In case you didn’t see what happened, here’s the NASCAR.com video, basically, on lap 67 during a round of green flag pit stops, the #47 car made a normal pit stop, during the stop, a tire got away, so the gas man of the #47-Marcos Ambrose’s team, chased the loose tire which was halfway to the flag stand on front straightway by the time he caught it and rolled it back, because he went out to get the tire during green conditions, NASCAR called for a ca...

The title of this article says it all, first, it’s always cool to see NASCAR turn to country music for someone to rock the prerace Daytona 500 party, last year, they had Brooks & Dunn, this year it was Keith Urban. I’ve got to say that I’ve been a country music fan for a long time and I’ve really gotten into it in 2005 when I was introduced to Carrie Underwood’s music, so to see NASCAR continue that with Keith Urban on stage was good. Nice set by Keith Urban, I believe I heard three songs from him, I might consider getting a couple of those songs. By the way, Sweet Thing, the music video has a sweet, black 1969 Ford Mustang in it and that to me is sweet thing for sure.Country star Keith Urban performs a pre-race concert prior to the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. NASCAR shows zero tolerance in Nationwide and Truck series races at Daytona
2009-02-15 00:51:00
I’ve been watching NASCAR for over 17 years now, and in that time, I have seen a lot of things go down, amazing drivers retire, new drivers come into the sport, stock cars changing, racetracks come and go, attendance, tickets, and diecast prices highs and lows and more, however in my opinion one of the most talked about areas in NASCAR really has to do with both on-track and off-track calls made by NASCAR. NASCAR has not always made the best calls or consistent calls from the tower or the NASCAR hauler, one of the most classic examples has been the judgment calls on the yellow line rule at both Daytona and Talladega, did a driver push another driver below the yellow line or did a driver just go below the yellow line to advance their position, which isn’t allowed and the calls are mixed.Another move with the inconsistent calls is on rough driving, the art of making pass cleanly, payback on track or off and more through all of NASCAR. As of the end of 2008 NASCAR season, NASCAR ha...

Joey Logano: 2009 NASCAR Cup Series prediction and Home Depot commercial.
2009-02-14 20:04:00
With Joey Logano set to make his debut in the #20 Home Depot Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing tomorrow in the Daytona 500, I have come up with a few thoughts and a little humor, first, in watching all of SPEED, FOX and ESPN's coverage, I've noticed that just about every media and fan has huge expections for this kid, so hear our my expections for Joey Logano in his rookie season in the Cup Series...Joey Logano will be watched by many including me as I have picked him to be the rookie of the year in 2009. In my opinion, nobody really should expect so much for this driver, the goal in my eyes is simple, stay in top 35 in owner’s and drivers points, make all 36 races in 2009 and start to become a contender week in and week out for victories. Logano will not be a hit right out of the box, however he does have the skills to win races this season with a good crew chief and guys behind him.Just about everybody knows this kid can drive, but I will be interested to see where he is in points a...

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen, I’ve been a huge NASCAR fan since 1991-1992 and in that time, I have seen a lot of change go through the sport from the 7-time champion Richard Petty retire, the sport loss one of the best, Dale Earnhardt, to Jimmie Johnson win three-straight NASCAR Cup Series Championship and Dale Earnhardt Jr. leave DEI and join Hendrick Motorsports.I’ve also seen a huge change with the stock cars from once a stock car that looked like something you could buy on the showroom floor to something that at least looks like something on the street to now a car of tomorrow that is prototype, but at least is safer. And yet see the sports hasn’t change in other way, NASCAR is still NASCAR and unlike what some say, the racing on track is good at times, just with new drivers and teams. In reason years, I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for a season to start, mainly because there was first, a very business off season with mergers and alliance from Earn...

Welcome ladies and gentleman, with the upcoming 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season upon us with the biggest race of the season this weekend at Daytona international Speedway, the Daytona 500, I am going to touch on the top 5 drivers and team to watch this season. Now when it comes to the upcoming 2009 season, you have your odds on favorite drivers to watch from Jimmie Johnson who might just be going for four straight Cup Series Championships or a four-peat, Carl Edwards who had 9 victories last season from race #2 at California Speedway to the finale in Homestead and finished second in the Cup Series championship, Kyle Busch, who dominated in the first 26 races of 2008 with 8 victories, only to have troubles in the chase and finish 10th in points to my favorite, Dale Earnhardt Jr. who moved from DEI to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, drive the #88 National Guard/AMP/Mountain Dew Chevrolet, won last June on Father’s day at Michigan, was between 3rd and 4th in the points during the f...

Which NASCAR merger or alignment will be the strongest in 2009?
2009-01-17 23:59:00
Over the past couple of months during the off-season, there seems to be a new trend in NASCAR due to the tough economy, the merging or for some, alignments of race teams. Merging race teams isn’t anything new in NASCAR, however since this past October, November, there has been a big spike in them, teams are trying to stay alive and with that, interesting partnerships are formed, deals have come together that otherwise in recent years might not have even been considered. One of the most public merger happened last November, which unfortunately means the passing of the first of two iconic race team in NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt Inc., even though I am not a fan of any of the DEI driver lineup nor a fan of DEI since Dale Jr. left at the end of 2007, DEI still holds a place in my heart because this race team was created by the 7-time Cup Series champion, legend and one of my favorite drivers Dale Earnhardt, so when I read the official announcement from the team, it took me by surprise, DEI,...

What would you do with the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Truck Series?

Last November just before the finale in Homestead for the Nationwide Series and the Truck Series, I wrote a controversial article (published on this blog RaceDriven.com) on merging the Nationwide Series and the Truck Series, over the past couple of months, I have been thinking about this idea at length, I think about this idea every time I surf the internet and read anyone of those articles that features a race team that is struggling or a driver trying to find a ride.Case in point, the DEI-Ganassi Racing merger comes to mind with a question mark on their Nationwide program as one, JR Motorsports still looking for a little more sponsorship for his #88 car even with GoDaddy.com stepping up for more races or a Truck Series team closing up shop due to no manufacturer support, let alone no sponsor, the point is in this tough economy, which is everywhere, yes even in NASCAR, something’s need to change for NASCAR, teams, owners, driver to stay afloat, whether that’s mergers, removing ...

As I sit here celebrating the New Year’s, I would like to cap off 2008 with taking a final lap back through the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Season with the success stories, the top 35 that changed after the season ended and the struggles. The success stories in 2008 Cup Series season was dominated in the headlines and on-track by three drivers, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson, how? Simple, in the first 26-races, the season really belonged to Kyle Busch, Busch scored 8 victories, what can you say about Kyle, either you love him or hate him, however I can’t say either, hate is a strong word to me and I don’t hate Kyle. But while Kyle Busch is a good wheel man, he can drive just about anything on wheels meaning Cup Series, Nationwide, Trucks, dirt cars and more and can drive even a really loss racecar, he still just doesn’t get it. His attitude, the way he drives around others, he doesn’t care, he does whatever it takes to win, even in my opinion, wrecking, sorry...

For the second year in a row, WindTunnel asked the question leading into the chase for the sprint cup, what will the final 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points standings be? So back in September, I put pen to paper or typed out on my word processor “My Take” and predicted just what the final 2008 Cup Series Standings would be, was I corrected or not and no when I wrong, I am not afraid to admit it.The first column is my predictions and the second are the official top 12 chase standings:1. Jimmie Johnson – Correct Pick: Jimmie Johnson three-peats, winning the 2008 NASCAR Sprint cup Series Championship.2. Carl Edwards – Correct Pick.3. Kyle Busch – Incorrect Pick, Kyle Busch’s season fell apart in the chase, finishing 10th.4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Nope, Dale Jr. had a good first season with Hendrick Motorsports, but finished 12th.5. Kevin Harvick – Incorrect Pick, Harvick rebounded with race finishes to finish 4th6. Jeff Gordon – Incorrect Pick, no victories in 2008 a...

As I sit here reading some of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship week news coming out of New York that all leads up to the banquet on Friday night live on ESPN Classic, yeah who thought that up anyway, first putting it in New York and second televising it on ESPN Classic, does everyone have ESPN Classic, I bet, NO.Anyway, over the past couple of weeks, I have been thinking over what in my opinion was a good 2008 Cup Series season despite a spit verdict with this new Car of Tomorrow at all racetracks, a unique and at times, safe and yet, a complete nightmare of a car, yeah that works right…. however in most ways, what a good season it was. I would sum up the 2008 season highlights with something for just about everyone. How about one unique car and a good race, the Daytona 500 to start with? In some ways the COT does play host to some good racing after all and one race this season that was good was the Daytona 500, what a great way to start off the season, a race that always ...
Johnny Benson and Clint Bowyer each win first NASCAR national championship
2008-11-20 22:42:00
As all three NASCAR national series seasons have come to a close at the triple header finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway last weekend, one question in particular comes to mind, does NASCAR really need to add a new unique chase format to either or both the Nationwide Series and the Truck Series? Before I get into each series and how it ended, in my opinion, the chase format in the Cup Series was started for two reasons, first as a result of Matt Kenseth in 2003 winning the championship with basically one victory that season and a runaway points standings. Second was in light of the new sponsor Nextel, of course now Sprint. Personally, I believe that the chase format should only be unique to the NASCAR Cup Series, because that the elite series and they should have a different way of determining their champion then the rest of the NASCAR national series. With that said, the Nationwide Series points battle in past seasons has been nothing to really write about in terms of going down to th...

As NASCAR gears up for their season finale, the NASCAR championship weekend in Homestead, FL, that includes the crowning of all three National Series Championships which for the most part are all up for grabs, there seems to be a theme growing throughout the garage area, entitled ever-changing economy and what NASCAR and teams/organizations are going to do to survive to race in 2009.With that said, a domino fell, as on Wednesday, Dale Earnhardt Inc and Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates announced in a statement:Two of motorsports’ biggest names – Earnhardt and Ganassi – will launch a four-car team beginning in 2009 through the combination of the motorsports operations of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) and Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, Inc. (CGRFS). NASCAR stars Martin Truex Jr. and Juan Pablo Montoya will drive the Nos. 1 and 42 respectively and future star Aric Almirola will be behind the wheel of the No. 8. The driver of the No. 41 will be named in the near future....
No excuse for ABC to switch from NASCAR in Phoenix to America’s Funniest
2008-11-13 04:10:00
On Monday, ESPN explained the decision to switch the remainder of the live telecast of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Phoenix in the Eastern and Central time zones of the US at 7:30pm from ABC to ESPN2 for other programming:"After two red flags, rain in Phoenix and 4 1/2 hours on ABC, we were still 34 minutes from the end of the telecast as it turned out. We told fans in the East and Central from the second red flag on that the race was moving to ESPN2. ABC's entertainment viewers and NASCAR fans were both well served in a tough spot, and we are fortunate to have ESPN2 among our networks to serve the fans." - ESPNWhat a statement made by ESPN after last Sunday night’s Cup Series race in Phoenix, so now, instead of the big story of the night being a good race and the chase for the championship, it’s now going to be why would ESPN switch from the live Cup Series race to America’s Funniest Home Videos that headlined kicking it in the crib, garage door dove and doggy go rou...
Does NASCAR need change in the Nationwide Series and the Truck Series? Late
2008-11-11 03:40:00
As NASCAR gets ready to end their 2008 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway in a triple-header championship weekend for both the Nationwide Series and the Truck Series that currently both have a tight battles going on, in the Nationwide Series, Clint Bowyer is the point’s leader over second place Carl Edwards by just 56 points, I’m picking the points leader Clint Bowyer to win even though Edwards has been on fire as of late. However the tightest point’s battle is in the Truck Series with Johnny Benson leading by just 3 points, no that’s not a typo, that’s really 3 points after both drivers wrecked at Phoenix over second place Ron Hornaday Jr.. What a way to go, this could come down to bonus points and who wins the race even. I’m picking 3-time Truck Series Champion Ron Hornaday Jr to win the championship, he has done this before as he goes for two in a row. With that said, right now, just about everyone is talking about the shaky economy and more important, how to make the N...
