The Iran National Intelligence Estimate: A Comprehensive Guide to What Is W
2008-01-14 12:16:00 The National Intelligence Estimate’s narrow definition of Iran’s nuclear weapons program is so restrictive that even officials from the normally cautious International Atomic Energy Agency have expressed disagreement with its conclusions. Its release eases international pressure on Iran despite the fact that the NIE itself maintains that such pressure is critical to stopping the Iranian nuclear weapons program....(read more)
MIDDLE EAST: IAEA reports influenced Russia?s approach toward Iran
2007-12-20 20:05:00 The recent IAEA and NIE reports have made Russia adopt a more realistic approach and finally ship nuclear fuel to Iran, MP Mohammad-Ali Rudaki said here on Wednesday. The latest National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) report on Iran, which was compiled by sixteen U.S. intelligence agencies, and all the reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency have said that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program.Iran and Russia reached an agreement last week on a schedule to finish building the Bushehr nuclear power plant after years of delay. The first shipment of nuclear fuel arrived in Bushehr on Sunday. The vicissitudes in Iran?s nuclear dossier and the United States? heavy pressure on Russia were the major reasons for Moscow?s delay in fulfilling its promises, but the new developments in the nuclear issue led to a change in Russia?s approach, Rudaki told the Mehr News Agency.Similar views were sounded by political analyst Fayaz Zahed, who said that new developments in regard to Iran?s...

National Intelligence Estimate Says Iranian Nuclear Weapons Program is Over
2007-12-14 17:45:00 It seems like only a couple of weeks ago that most of the civilized world was in agreement that Iran was engaged in an ongoing nuclear weapons program and that it posed a serious threat not only to the Middle East, but to the rest of the world as well. Actually, it was only a ...
More on the National Intelligence Estimate
2007-12-06 17:19:00 Haaretz published today a fine editorial (English version)by Avner Cohen, a specialist on nuclear weapons. This is the most edifying commentary I've read on the mater since news of the intelligence report came out. I wonder whether the Haaretz – NYT syndication agreement works only for one side, because this would definitely be appropriate for the New York Times. Most of all, Dr. Cohen expresses his hesitance to make any comments on a public report that only 3% of it is indeed public. The information that led to the published conclusions is by and large still confidential, and therefore not much can be said about it.He contends that the aim of the report is to cleanse the American intelligence community of the shame of the reports that led to the war on Iraq. According to Cohen, the intelligence reports on Iraq were not that shameful, but they were exploited for political purposes. For this reason, the community now wishes to express a very clear voice concerning Iran. However, the...

National Intelligence Estimate Reflects Positively on the Bush Administrati
2007-12-05 04:47:00 National Intelligence Estimate Says Iran Stopped Pursuing Nuclear Weapons in 2003 The President’s critics and the Left are spinning this report as evidence the Bush administration is a neo-con war machine. Yes, the President will likely have to soften his position on Iran or at least use this as an opportunity to gain some “breathing room.” But IMHO, ...

2007-12-05 02:20:00 Press Conference by the President. running time is 42:40. FULL STREAMING VIDEO. James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. In Focus: National Security and In Focus: Budget and In Focus: Middle East. 10:01 A.M. EST.THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. I appreciate the fact that the United States Senate is going to take up the free trade agreement with Peru today. This agreement will level the playing field for American goods and services. It will create new opportunities for investment. It will strengthen our friendship with a fellow democracy. The House of Representatives has passed this bill; I congratulate the House leadership. And I certainly hope the Senate will pass it, as well. This will be a very positive step. But Congress still has a lot to do, and doesn't have very much time to do it. Three weeks from today Americans will celebrate Christmas, and three groups of Americans are waiting on Congress to act. The first group are the troops. Our troops are waiting on Congress to fund them in th...
Giuliani?s foreign policy advisor speculates wildly about NIE report
2007-12-04 22:08:00 Neocon extraordinaire Norman Podhoretz, who currently works as Rudy Giuliani’s foreign policy advisor, is engaging in some wild speculation today regarding the new National Intelligence Estimate report on Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Writing at Commentary Magazine, he suggests that the US intelligence community may be gaming its analysis on Iran to undercut Bush’s march to war. But I entertain an even darker suspicion. It is that the intelligence community, which has for some years now been leaking material calculated to undermine George W. Bush, is doing it again. This time the purpose is to head off the possibility that the President may order air strikes on the Iranian nuclear installations. As the intelligence community must know, if he were to do so, it would be as a last resort, only after it had become undeniable that neither negotiations nor sanctions could prevent Iran from getting the bomb, and only after being convinced that it was very close to succeedi...

National Intelligence Estimate
2007-08-24 15:03:00 It's already being plugged by some on the left as further proof that we need to pull out of Iraq. They are eager to find where the report states that our progress is limited or where there are still major problems. But similar to how the report has looked in the past, regardless of the problems, our intelligence communities believe that departing from our strategy in Iraq will likely make things worse. We assess that changing the mission of Coalition forces from a primarily counterinsurgency and stabilization role to a primary combat support role for Iraqi forces and counterterrorist operations to prevent AQI from establishing a safehaven would erode security gains achieved thus far. In other words, the plan most often put forward by the left is the exact plan that the NIE denounces as a loser. But leave it to some to pick and choose here. They will accept the findings of the report when they see something negative (while simultaneously ignoring any good)... but more to the poin...

The ?National Intelligence Estimate?: With Translations into English
2007-07-19 05:18:00 The most recent ‘National Intelligence Estimate‘ is out. Perhaps some of you have seen it. I took a read. It was shorter than I expected, only seven pages, but for those extremely read-ophobic out there, the first five pages concern how the document was compiled, who compiled it, and such like. Skip to page six. ...

The National Intelligence Estimate
2007-07-18 02:47:00 The National Intelligence Estimate was released today. The 16 U.S. Intelligence Agencies that contribute to the report have stated that Al-Qaida's recent build up constitutes a "persistent and evolving threat" to The United States. They also state that terrorist cells are enroute to, or may already be in, The United States for the purpose of carrying out an attack on the homeland. Since the members of Al-Qaida are people who were born in, raised in, trained in and have fought in, countries that are of a desert enviroment, they would have little difficulty negotiating the Arizona or New Mexican landscape, should they enter The United States across our southern border. That is ecactly what they have said they will do. And to date...they have been true to their word. It may already be too late to secure the Mexican Border. But late..is better than never. As I have previously mentioned in this blog....Border Security IS, The Greatest Crisis Facing The United States. Will it take anot...
