Olympics - Beijing National Stadium First Design
2008-08-13 12:59:00
chinese-olympic-stadium_web, originally uploaded by sokkmonkey. As breath-taking as the current "Bird's Nest" design of the Beijing National Stadium is, this one -- an onion -- was favored before it. But the enormity and scale of the design reflects just how much in resources China committed to these games. The total cost of the China Olympics was $40 Billion. That's more than twice as great as the current cost of the London games, which is at $18 billion. The cost of the Beijing Opening Ceremony alone is about $300 million.
Beijing National Stadium, Dreams Come True
2008-04-30 14:43:00
Dreams come true! For many Beijingers and visitors to Beijing there was a chance to make an Olympic dream come true this last weekend. The National Stadium (Bird?s Nest) was open to the public for the first time as it hosted the 2008 BBMG IAAF Race Walking Challenge. Many of us in Beijing have watched the stadium grow from hutongs and corn fields to the magnificent, awe-inspiring, first class sporting venue we see today. For years we have seen workers risk their lives as work continued 24 hours a day to build this awesome structure. Finally the time came when we were able to stop watching this incredible ?Bird?s Nest? evolve ready for its ?residents? and we could enjoy ?nestling? in the ?Nest?!Sitting in the stadium it is hard to believe that such a gigantic structure can feel so warm and intimate. As you sit and gaze down at the track you feel as if you are truly close to the action. The designers have to be congratulated on their efforts to allow the audience such close proximity to...

Beijing National Stadium, Part II

Warning: Don't stand still for too long!If you stand still for long around the housing compound across the road from National Stadium in Beijing you are likely to score a fresh coat of brilliant white paint. Workers are swarming over the buildings and anything else that stands still long enough throughout the compound and applying a generous coat of white paint. It is certainly giving everything a shiny new feel before the Olympic Games commence. Even the flag poles and the panda used for the Asian Games some 20 years ago are feeling the stroke of the painters brush!Hotels in BeijingBuy 2008 Beijing Olympics TicketsBooks on China and BeijingTagsBeijing China National Stadium Beijing 0lympicsBook the Fujian Hotel Beijing Book the Beijing Qianyuan International Business Hotel

Beijing?s new National Stadium, also known as the Bird?s Nest, is a unique, world class and innovative building in its design and appearance. The designers from Swiss group Herzog and De Meuron, Arup Sport and China Architecture Design and Research Group, appear to have been inspired by nature when thinking about the stadium. The design will allow free flow of air around the stadium as well as protection from the wind and rain as needed. The stadium will seat 91 000 people during the Olympic competition, where the main track and field events will be held. Olympic Opening and Closing ceremonies will also be held in the Beijing National Stadium. Restaurants, shops, cinemas, a health club and restrooms are all part of the stadium?s design.110 000 tonnes of 110mm thick plate steel has been fitted together in such a way that the stadium is said to withstand earthquakes and be the world?s largest enclosed space.Hotels in BeijingBuy 2008 Beijing Olympics TicketsBooks on China and BeijingTag...

PIC-O-DE-CROP FINALS AND COHOBBLOPOT TO BE HELD AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM AGA
2007-07-27 02:15:00
The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) has reconsidered plans to host this year’s Pic-o-de-Crop Finals and Cohobblopot at Kensington Oval. This decision has been taken in light of the circumstance in which covering available for the protection of the field from possible damage is deemed to be inadequate. Covering such as would be adequate has to be sourced from overseas and time constraints do not allow for this. As a result, both events will now be held at the National Stadium. The decision to return to the Stadium has the approval of -both the Ministry responsible for the NCF and that responsible for Kensington Oval. Al Gilkes Chairman National Cultural Foundation. Looks like the new Barbados Cricket Association President Joel Garner has put his foot down. The NCF attempt to justify Kensington’s existence has been bowled for zero!

Honoring Bob Woolmer: Rename National Stadium, Karachi
2007-03-20 08:53:00
Adil Najam Like so many others, I feel that we Pakistanis need to honor Bob Woolmer’s contribution to Pakistan cricket, to memorialize his tragic death, and celebrate his talented life. I believe that a good way to do so would be to rename National Stadium, Karachi, and call it the Woolmer Stadium. The outpouring of emotions and ...
