?The big story is productivity in China,? he asserts, noting it is an incredible 9%, or three times the level of productivity in the US during its 1990s peak. Admiral Owens attributes this to the country?s high-quality infrastructure. It will allow the Chinese economy to soon become the second-largest in the world, with a GDP ...
Northern Rock nationalisation
2008-04-03 07:40:00
Contrary to what the Tories may say, this is not a return to the past or a sudden thrust of socialism from the Government; it is in fact reflecting the reality of the situation faced by the government in making a decision that was necessary. Despite valiant efforts by the Government to find a buyer, nationalisation is like to best protect taxpayers' money. What happened in the case of Northern Rock was mismanagement by the company on a grand scale coupled with the financial crisis that had engulfed the US mortgage market. This should hopefully be a temporary solution and provide the necessary stability for the Northern Rock to be a viable bank again. Yes, shareholders' will have lost out in terms of the share value but the alternatives could have been far worse and if the bank had collapsed it would've had widespread ramifications for the whole financial market and the UK banking sector. This option was effectively the only one that was viable. In terms of Gideon Osborne and David ...

Nothern Rock Nationalisation - and the winner is, well, no-one
2008-02-18 18:40:00
The Government is finally going to nationalise Northern Rock. It’s “the right move at the right time for the right reasons”, according to Prime Minister Brown. This might be a true statement, if you constrain yourself to looking at this morning’s decision in isolation. Of course, the courts might yet decide that it was a really bad decision, ...
A staggering amount of money for Northern Rock.
2008-01-21 20:53:00
Dear Mr. Chancellor, The Northern Rock employs 6,500 people, most of them in marginal constituencies. You have just promised £25,000,000,000 of public money to keep them employed, as a loan that you only get back if the business ends up doing well. That works out at almost FOUR MILLION POUND PER JOB SAVED. If the business tanks, you will ...
Northern Rock Nationalisation? My off-the-wall solution :-)
2008-01-08 20:40:00
Of all the reports about Northern Rock over the last six months, the one that has consistently impressed me most is Robert Peston, of the BBC. In the latest twist, Robert reports that SRM, a Hedge Fund who currently own about 10% of Northern Rock have written to the Government, making it clear that if the ...

2007-05-17 00:00:00
LA PAZ, May 16 (IPS) - Foreign investment in Bolivia fell to 237 million dollars in 2006 as part of a continued tendency that is jeopardising economic growth, warn some analysts, who blame the phenomenon on the government's strategy of placing firms that were privatised in the 1990s back in state hands.
Russia's Nationalisation Trap
2007-02-27 06:44:00
Which are the common assets of a nation and who should be allowed to utilise them? This is a question of heated debate for current Russia, as the vital energy sector is gradually being nationalised. It is privatisation in reverse - for everyone to see - no matter what the Kremlin might claim. The question is: Is it good for Russia? In terms of economics, monopolisation - in this case nationalisation - may be motivated if the sector in question constitutes a natural monopoly. This may mean one out of two things: Either the social costs of monopoly production are lower than under competitive circumstances, or if the fixed costs of entry into a sector are so high as to be predatory, it allows but one viable and effective producer. Areas associated with natural monopolies are e.g. water services, postal services, telecommunications, and so on. However, as examples in global economy show, natural monopolies are not a sine qua non. Private companies may offer such production and services, ...
