Definition of a Native American?
2008-02-26 03:13:00 Rep. Meeks (D) may need to check his sources for his legislation. I think he may have got this one from a couple of ..people at the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission, but it could be a sneak job. I don't think you can plagiarize legislation, but I know a state law law can not invalidate a federal law. This legislation passed today in the House. AN ACT relating to the definition of American Indian. Amend KRS 446.010 to define "American Indian" to mean a person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment to the tribe of origin; make conforming amendments. This is from the U.S. Census Bureau American Indian and Alaska Native. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment. But look at the last set of words in Meeks' legislation, to the tribe of origin, that is...
Native American programs in Genesee County search for students amidst compl
2008-02-22 06:54:00 by RoNeisha Mullen | The Flint Journal Thursday February 21, 2008, 4:21 PM FLINT TWP. — Local Native American education programs are seeing declining numbers, a sad statement on families rejecting their heritage, some educators say. "For so long, Native Americans had been taught to deny their culture because they’d be tormented," said Jean Keen, a Native American specialist with the Carman-Ainsworth/Westwood Heights program. "Now, we’re having a hard time getting them to embrace it. They don’t understand the point. Schools spend a lot of time chasing families they know are eligible." Such local programs are trying to find more students but that can be difficult in the face of the cultural apathy, not to mention declining Native American numbers. "A lot of our students don’t know that they are of Native American heritage," said Sue Diebel, a Carman-Ainsworth teacher who’s part of an advisory group over the program....
Cultural Council funds Native American program
2008-02-22 06:51:00 Rochester - The Rochester Cultural Council has awarded $589 in funding to support the Native American Educational Outreach Project at the Robbins Museum of Archaeology, located at 17 Jackson St. in Middleborough. Funding from the Rochester Cultural Council will cover the costs of transportation to and admission at the museum for local third-grade students and their teachers who wish to visit the Robbins Museum. Exhibits at the museum cover over 10,000 years of Native American history and culture, and, according to Robbins Museum education liaison Mary Concannon, contextualize instruction on Massachusetts history, providing insight into and understanding of the dynamic role Native Americans have played in shaping our Commonwealth. “The Robbins is the only museum dedicated to Native American history in Massachusetts,” Concannon said. “A key goal of our programming is to make our exhibits and educational materials relevant to students and easy-to-use by educators. So, if teac...

The return of Turok, a Native American comic-book hero
2008-02-22 06:26:00 By Blaine Kyllo Propaganda Games was formed three years ago by a group of former Electronic Arts staffers. Within months, it was acquired by Buena Vista Games, now Disney Interactive Studios. In an interview with the Georgia Straight at Propaganda’s Vancouver offices, general manager and vice president Josh Holmes said the company had been working on an original concept for a third-person action game, but scrapped it when it won the right to develop the new Turok video game for Touchstone, a Disney brand. The first Turok game—1997’s Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the Nintendo 64—was one of the earliest first-person shooters produced for console gaming systems. Turok first appeared in a 1954 comic book in a story by Gaylord DuBois, who was known for writing outdoor-adventure comics about such characters as Tarzan, Roy Rogers, and Sergeant Preston of the Yukon. Turok changed over the years, depending on who was using him and for what purpose, but one thing has remained ...
Kentucky Native American Rights Group
2008-02-19 23:28:00 A newly formed Native American organization called the Kentucky Native American Rights Group is announcing formation. I am directly involved with this organization and our mission is to fight for, of course, Native American rights in Kentucky through political awareness, advertising and activism. It is a bit of a shift for the people involved in this group as we have traditionally chosen to use education as our activist tool. Things sometime change for the better and certain things happen for a reason. Please visit our temporary homepage (HERE) and join the mailing list.
Until the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission is Re-Organized; STO
2008-02-19 04:32:00 Rep. Reginald Meeks (D) is moving along with his annual dose of Native American legislation. Meeks should be commended for his past work for Native Americans in Kentucky but this year I will fight to stop him and his legislation. House Bill 429, would allow the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission, KNAHC the power to approve Indian Tribes for official state recognition. That can not happen this year. Meeks is a member of the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission, KNAHC. Chairperson Bruce Brading is under threat of major legal troubles and is currently under a civil action in Laurel County. Rumors of more legal troubles are on the way, but I stop at that. If this legislation passes and is signed by the Governor it will give Brading and his cronies awesome power over the Native American people of Kentucky. I am amazed that Brading is still a appointed Commissioner. Before his dismissal for supporting Steve Beshear and Daniel Mongiardo, former KNAHC Chairman Tom ...
Kentucky Native American Rights Movement
2008-02-03 19:11:00 When dealing with Native American Rights in Kentucky one can get extremely frustrated and fast. This year is no exception as we wait yet again. For the 4th or 5th year in a row, Rep. Reginald Meeks (D) has filed legislation that would finally protect our Native American Burial sites and designate those sites as actual cemeteries. But for the 4th or 5th year in a row my personal caucus of members of the House says only two words, no chance. The bill is HB295. On the other hand an alternative bill has been drafted and sent to the proper agency for processing. Still no word on this legislation and no word on the progress of the processing. I know it has to be chaos in the LRC so I will refrain from suggesting that, yet again, it appears the Native American peoples of Kentucky are getting the cold shoulder. The only other option I have is fight in another way and I promise everyone it will be devastating on a non-violent front. There is still a chance for success this year but time is ...
Black Lodge Singers - Weasel Tails Dream [2001]
2008-01-22 16:45:00 The Black Lodge Singers of White Swan, WA, are one of the most sought-after bands on the powwow circuit. The group, comprised largely of members of Kenny Scabby Robe's family, is known for their original compositions. On this release, they pay tribute to the family's late patriarch, Jim Weasel Tail. Weasel Tail was himself a respected singer and craftsperson who continued to make the rounds of the powwow trail (even after losing the use of his legs) until his death in 1975. The 13 songs on this release, all new compositions, are sung in the Blackfeet language. Here the family shows the strength that has put them at the top of their game. The drumming and singing are powerful and high-spirited, accented by yelps and hoots. It's a joyous and loving tribute to an esteemed man. Native American Inlay Jewelry
2008-01-15 03:00:00 I love handcrafted jewelry. No mass-produced jewelry for me, thank you very much. What I love is the craftsmanship. Anybody can hang a bead on a chain-not being critical, it's just not my style. So it's only natural that I would love Native American Jewelry. Multicolor Mosaic Inlay Multicolor inlay is a popular expression of Zuni Native American art. The rainbow of colors are hand-cut pieces of Turquoise, Coral, Jet, Shell, and Mother-of-Pearl-these gemstones have special meaning in the Zuni religion. The stones are set in mosaic style, touching stone-to-stone, and secured with a silver bezel around the outside. Multicolor Mosaic Inlay Necklace Santa Fe artist, Juan Velasco, designed this unique sterling silver and multicolor mosaic inlay necklace. Each piece is entirely handmade, from the bold sterling borders to the perfectly matching hinges. Every link is then inlaid with tiny pieces of Turquoise, Lapis Lazuli, Sugilite Coral, Spiny Oyster Shell, and Mother of Pearl t...

Native American Code of Ethics
2008-01-07 17:56:00 Each morning upon rising, and each evening before sleeping, give thanks for the life within you and for all life, for the good things the Creator has given you and for the opportunity to grow a little more each day. Consider your thoughts and actions of the past day and seek for the courage and strength to be a better person. Seek for the things that will benefit others (everyone).Treat every person from the tiniest child to the oldest elder with respect, at all times. Special respect should be given to Elders, Parents, Teachers, and Community Leaders. No person should be made to feel "put down" by you; avoid hurting other hearts, as you would avoid a deadly poison. ...What wise words! Man's ethical behavior should (and could!) be based easily on values as simple as these. And it would be a better world, wouldn't it?
