American Museum of Natural History New York City 2008
2008-04-03 00:48:00 Recently my attention has been drawn to the work being done on the New York City buildings that I pass by everyday. I'm always so impressed that developers, financiers, architects, engineers, contractors, managers and politicians can envision and execute these huge projects. Cornerstone laid by US Grant in 1874, the 77th street side of The American Museum of Natural History is getting a face lift in 2008. You can't see much of the actual work because the building has been gift-wrapped by somone with an artistic eye; the wrapping paper has a subtle graphic rendition of the actual facade. They have written interesting factoids about the building on the temporary walls that keep the sidewalk superintendents at bay. The red granite comes from Grindstone and Picton Islands NY, 350 miles from NYC Some of the blocks in the front steps weigh 8000lbs There are more than 34,000 blocks of stone in the 707 foot long 77th street facade The A...
A Natural History of Anarchy - Part I
2008-04-01 06:01:00 Evolution, Cooperation and Social Change? If the misery of our poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.?- Charles DarwinAll political and economic philosophies are based on fundamental assumptions about human nature. Early assumptions were based on the premise that a supernatural entity fashioned man in His image but that this creation was flawed. As a result, while we may strive for perfection, the harmony we seek is unattainable without embracing the Supreme Being and His law. Throughout recorded history, all-too-human tyrants have used such views to their political advantage.Even in the Republican systems that emerged out of the Enlightenment, the premise that there must be a class of rulers and a class to be ruled is the established norm (the modification being that the ruler is approved first by the populace rather than chosen through nepotism). Totalitarian regimes are predicated on the assumption that humans are innately selfish and ...

Qatar Sea Slugs
2007-09-19 22:42:00 A New Species?Below is an image of what is almost certainly a new species of sea slug, though it has yet to be named. The sea slug was discovered by Gabriele Patterson during a Qatar Natural History Group trip, and photographed by Iain Macdonald.Expert Dr Bill Rudman, who runs The Sea Slug Forum, believes that the tiny scarlet and white creature is likely to be a new species. It bears most resemblance to a sea slug last seen in Pakistan more than a century ago.AppearanceAs can be seen from both the new species and the images of sea slugs below, these creatures can be far more beautiful than their name suggests. These soft-bodied creatures are more properly known as Nudibranch - which can be translated as either naked gills or as bare lungs.Their bright colours and patterns are not without purpose. They serve as a warning to hungry fish to leave these slow moving creatures well alone - not without reason, as they contain unpleasant chemicals making their flesh unpalatable to even ...
