Little Red Bridge...
2008-06-06 17:47:00 There is a little red bridge in Magnolia Gardens that leads you from one side of the pond to the other. I enjoyed seeing the reflections in the water, the water was quiet like a mirrorThe red bridge was also a living space for a little green gecko, enjoying the warm sunshine on his backHe was so peacefully dreaming in the sun until a photographer came up to him with that unbearable clicking sound which made the gecko disappear behind the red pole for protection - and he never came back again. This is the beautiful view that the gecko was pondering while taking his sunbath.

And the Eagle flies...
2008-04-22 17:58:00 This was the first time in my life I have seen eagles flying in the wild so close. I wish, I would have had my longer 600mm lens with me to capture those "Bald Head Eagles" better! There were for sure five of them circling over my head, loud screaming - while down in the water the fisher man enjoyed the tranquility of the Cooper River and tried to catch some good pieces for his dinner.

The Angel Oak in Spring
2008-04-19 14:59:00 I have visited the old "Angel Oak" again, I wanted to see her in her new "spring time dress". But there were 3 buses waiting outside the parking lot and for sure more than over 120 school kids running around and climbing up and down in the tree like little monkeys. So I had to wait until the big fun was over and they are gone - and happily, 10 minutes later the whole place was empty again, quite again and only the singing birds and my clicking camera to hear.I made earlier already a post about the "Angel Oak",read it here: http://sues-daily-photos.blogsp-ot.com/2008/02/angel-oak.html

The Ashley River, SC
2008-04-10 14:56:00 The Ashley River is a river in South Carolina, rising from the Wassamassaw and Great Cypress Swamps in Western Berkeley County. It consolidates its main channel about 5 miles west of Summerville, widening into a brackish, tidal estuary just south of Fort Dorchester. The much wider Ashley joins the Cooper River in Charleston to form the Charleston Harbor before discharging into the Atlantic Ocean. The river was named for Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury and chief Lord Proprietor of the Carolina Colony. Charleston was founded on the western bank of the Ashley in 1670 (at Charles Towne Landing), before moving across to its current peninsular location ten years later.

"Wildlife" in Down Town
2008-03-24 14:50:00 In all the seven years I lived in Key West I have not seen one of these cute and rapidly moving Squirrels and here in Charleston they are everywhere - and they amused me very much running up and down the trees and on the walls in one of Down Towns parks, always on the search to find some food.
A Walk on the Wild Side in Cypress Gardens
2008-03-20 15:00:00 In the late 1920's, Dean Hall Plantation in Berkeley County was owned by Benjamin Kittredge as a winter retreat and hunting preserve. Mr. Kittredge especially enjoyed duck hunting in the black water impoundments that were remnants left from the days when Dean Hall was a mojor rice plantation on the Cooper River. The story is told that one day when he was out hunting, he became entracted by the reflection of a red maple leaf in the mirror-like waters of the swamp. This experience inspired Mr. Kittredge to re-capture this image by planting thousands of azaleas, cammellias, dogwoods, wisteria, daffodils and iris along the dikes of the impoundments. He imported winter-blooming Daphne and paid a penny for each Atamasco lily bulb that local children brought him from nearby woods. As the years passed, Mr. Kittredge created the 163 acre swamp garden presently known as Cypress Gardens. The reflections of fuschia, red, white, lavendar, and pink on the smooth black water enthrall visitor...

In the 1930s, the giant pier and pavilion (later destroyed by fire) rose to fame for billing such big-name acts as Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, the Ink Spots, and Guy Lombardo. Gershwin fans may be interested to know that George and Ira composed "Porgy and Bess" while staying on the beach. Although fire wiped out most of the beach's historical structures, the area is still a popular draw for surfers, picnickers, anglers, and sunbathers, and it offers a pleasant retreat from harried site-seeing for the brain-tired traveler. Spanish Moss
2008-02-15 16:45:00 Spanish Moss Spanish moss is an epiphyte (a plant that lives upon other plants; from Greek "epi"=upon "phyte"=plant), which absorbs nutrients (especially calcium) and water from the air and rainfall. Spanish moss is colloquially known as "air plant". It is not a biological parasite in the same sense as another epiphyte, mistletoe (it does not burrow into the tree and suck out nutrients)- however this is using a technical meaning of "parasite" of the biological community. By using a tree's structure it blocks out sunlight that would otherwise fall on the host tree's own leaves. The amount of sunlight it blocks is proportional to the amount it reduces tree growth depending on the tree type. On some trees only smaller or lower branches will die but the tree will grow at a slower rate. It can grow so thickly on tree limbs that it gives a somewhat "gothic" appearance to the landscape, and while it rarely kills the trees it lowers their growth rate by reducing the amount of light to a...
Folly Beach and the story about a Light House
2008-02-04 14:40:00 Morris Island LighthouseMorris Island lighthouse stands all alone about 300 yards off shore from the island of Folly Beach. It can be viewed from the northeast end of Folly Island and from the bridge coming to Folly Beach. The Morris Island lighthouse is now completely surrounded by water but was once sitting on a good sized island with numerous buildings around it. The lighthouse was completed in 1876 and was the second lighthouse to be built on the island. In the 1700s there were three islands that stretched for four miles between Folly Island and Sullivan?s Island. They were named Middle Bay Island, Morrison Island, and Cummings Point. The first Charleston lighthouse was built on Middle Bay Island in 1767. The lighthouse was designed by Samuel Cardy and built by Adam Miller and Thomas Young. The tower was cylindrical and stood 102 feet tall. The lantern room had a revolving lamp that had a range of about 12 miles. In 1858 a Fresnel lens was installed. In the earl...

Our travel trip of 750 Miles away from Key West to Charleston,SC in the North was big fun - only the weather went from 78F down to 34F and that was a big shock for us, coming from warm Key West, wearing always only shorts and flip-flops every day. I had to buy first warm long pants and closed shoes for me...LOL..We are now moved in to our very nice apartment and are waiting for the delivery of new furnitures. As soon as we are established here, we will be running out to explore and I will have time enough to do new photos from this very nice town. I'm very excited!

The Old 7 Miles Bridge - Pigeon Key
2007-08-30 17:12:00 Pigeon Key - Cayo Paloma On old Spanish charts, Pigeon Key was known as Cayo Paloma (dove or white pigeon). Many believe this 5.31-acre island located beneath the Old Seven Mile Bridge, just west of Marathon, was named after the white-crowned pigeon of the Florida Keys. Nobody had much use for Pigeon Key until Henry Flagler needed it to complete the Seven Mile Bridge, which was part of the Florida East Coast Railroad . At that time, the bridge was known as "Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge". Work began on the island in the spring of 1909, and by the beginning of 1912, it held four bunkhouses, each designed to hold 64 men; an engineering/office building, which also held sleeping quarters for the men who worked there; and numerous tents set up over wooden floors on stilts for the laborers. Food was good and plentiful and strict cleanliness was the law. Originally, the design for the portion of the Seven Mile Bridge in the Pigeon Key area called for it ...
