The port of examination in both cases was Sunderland. In 1901 he qualified, again at Sunderland, for another certificate referred to by the abbreviation OC, and in 1905 for yet another referred to as ExC, this time at South Shields.The abbreviations are in what I think is a RNR document. I think this because it has a box headed "R.N.R. Number". I am sending a copy as an attachment in case you would like to see it yourself. I obtained my copy from someone in London who does searches for genealogical and historical records at The National Archives, Kew. But that did not materialize due to a horrific experience on the PGMA Strong Republic Nautical Highway. I wanted to stress the full name to illustrate the wrong impression it gives. PGMA had announced this RORO thing years ago and one would expect that the highways in Samar, being part of the Pan-Philippine Highway, were at least in decent condition.Well, it was worse than last night. What would normally take two hours from Catbalogan to Calbayog (that's already bad given that the distance between both cities is just 70 kilometers), we did in nine hours. For close to seven hours, traffic in the only road that ran through Samar Province was at a complete stop. A truck was stuck in the mud in a one-lane section in Brgy. The noodle soup was basic but fine. We speculated that at just $20 for the four of us, lunch couldn’t really get any cheaper. So this week we decided to go a bit posh and picked out a noodle shop on the main street. All shinny glass, neon and upholstery. We were worried that this joint might blow the budget but it was pissing down rain when we arrived, and the corner bench seat was a welcome retreat. As is the habit of late, we order two noodle soups and BBQ chicken on broken rice. The pho was of a fine standard, and there was plenty of patrons here. A brilliant lunch on a cold day.
