What can be done about the prostitutes on Nebraska Avenue?
2008-08-31 19:57:00 This is the first of a multipart series on the topic. My ability to speak on this topic is due to my participation in the Southeast Seminole Heights Neighborhood Watch, The Exercise Club, and SESH NW Vehicle Patrol and for moderating the Prostitution Task Force (for which I and others did extensive research.) To deal with this problem requires cooperation and commitment on the part of the residents. There are 5 core strategies in dealing with the prostitutes and their Johns. ReportingDisruptionArrestsTreat-mentEconomic change of the community These strategies requires a commitment on the part of the residents, where they need to become part of the system instead of relying on the system. This is the essential in fact of community policing. The community has a role in effective policing. Reporting The most basic element is observing and reporting the behavior. To effectively deal with any criminal problem, the police need information about the problem....
Obama to tap Nebraska?s Hagel as Running Mate?
2008-08-19 18:20:00 Sometime last week, i scribbled a note saying that presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama would tap Nebraska’s nominally Republican senior Senator, Chuck Hagel as his running mate. This thought first came to me when I read that next Wednesday night’s theme at the Democratic National Convention, when the party’s vice presidential nominee speaks, will be ...

Ode to Nebraska Avenue
2008-08-14 14:15:00 According to her stepdaughter, Maggie Council (aka Dipietra) has a released a new record called Not In The House. Interestingly she says about her album "Nebraska Avenue ? Ode to southeast Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa. Every word is true. All the extraneous sounds are actually from on or near Nebraska Avenue, where Robert hung out with a field recorder. " Aside from being a musician, Maggie has a long association with WMNF radio which resides in Southeast Seminole Heights.Other comments about the album "Not In The House ? OK. I was watching a Jeff Berlin bass instructional video and reading a book about using words to frame arguments called ?Don?t Think of an Elephant? while wondering what would happen if the single mom with 4 kids I saw at the Laundromat [on Nebraska Avenue] ever became President."Here is the first track called Nebraska Avenue. Listen for the sounds. Copies of the CD can be ordered from her CD website for $12.97.
SESHCA seeks beautification of Nebraska Avenue
2008-07-30 17:29:00 From the SESH email list:"We met with the City of Tampa this morning regarding the Beautification of Nebraska Avenue. The meeting was very productive and positive. Funds will be made available for this project; however, the city and state have to go through their respective processes and we, as an association, have our work to do in order to put the project in motion. The state showed some concerns about other situations where Civic Associations have failed in their quest to maintain sections of roadway but Shannon Edge, Director of Community Relations was very quick to applaud SESCHA as . . . . . . . . passionate and active association in the City. I know many of you have expressed a desire to get involved in the project. . . . . . . The goal is to have our section of Nebraska Avenue finished by Super Bowl in January. While that may seem like a lot of time, there is much to do behind the scenes."
Trolley on Nebraska
2008-06-23 21:15:00 From the SESH email list:"I just rode the Tampa Trolley from Ybor to Channelside this weekend. It was fun, but it seems to me that if service was expanded to run up Nebraska into the Seminole Heights area it would attract a lot more riders since people could get into Ybor w/out having to drive/park. Going from Ybor to Channelside is a little pointless if you have to drive to Ybor to begin with! I know they have had a hard time financially, but maybe expanding the service to be more useful would help.It is kind of like trying to find a way to ride a bus to work. When it takes an hour and a half to get to work by bus, but only 15 mins. by car, there is not a practical way to make that work. Maybe expanding the bus service, rather than cutting it, would make it more useful to more people. "
An Important Win for Fathers, Children in Nebraska Supreme Court
2008-06-04 19:40:00 We’ve often discussed anti-father bias in Child Protective Services cases. Fathers are frequently marginalized and deprived of custody of their children when their wives/ex-wives/ex-girlfriends abuse their children. This terrible Nebraska case detailed below is another example. In the case, a mother abused her daughter and child protective services took the girl. There were no accusations of ...

Why we live in Nebraska
2008-05-05 08:28:00 Just a story I thought about today I thought I would share. Perhaps it is about how media affects us. Perhaps it is how threads weave through our lives, bringing together a rich tapestry we cannot fully see. Perhaps it is about how places can adopt meaning and symbolism without ever having been to them. But way back in 1982, Bruce Springsteen released an album which had a profound effect on my husband. Something about the music. Something about the cover. Something about Nebraska captivated my husband. And as long as I have known him, he has wanted to just drive through Nebraska. Straight down this highway into that great expanse of nothing which seems to stretch on forever:And here we are. And the road he takes on his 120 mile trek to work looks a bit like that. All roads outside the metropolitan area do until you hit the sandhills.

Nebraska
Naughty naughty! And what is the NNN about? Well, they've been around since March of 2005 and "has been the state's premiere source of progressive online political commentary and community-building." Being gamers, we're a bit wary of political stuff, because politicians often take up the cause that video games are a bad influence. Looks like they may have their first proof of that.[Thanks, Michael!]

Obama Winning Reports In Washington, Louisiana, and Nebraska
2008-02-10 14:11:00 WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama packed in a Nebraska crowd of over 10,000, Chelsea Clinton spoke up for her mom and Mike Huckabee laid out a full plate of Kansas events like he never heard the Republican race is supposed to be over. So goes the effort to win four Democratic and three Republican presidential nomination contests on the weekend -- a round getting less than the full treatment by the remaining hopefuls, but plenty of attention still.... There was plenty of drama for the two Democrats, competing for 161 delegates Saturday in Washington state, Louisiana, Nebraska and the Virgin Islands, followed by Maine caucuses with 24 delegates Sunday. In strongly Republican and sparsely populated Nebraska, Obama spoke to the huge crowd at an Omaha arena Thursday, exhorting: ''You're here because you don't want to just be against something. You want to be for something. Chris Slaughter, 20, heard the speech and said: ''He's a once-in-a-generation candidate.'' ...

Obama Takes All Three; Huckabee Wins Two of Three
2008-02-10 10:06:00 Saturday was a three state sweep for Barack Obama over Senator Clinton. Washington state, Louisiana, and Nebraska were decisive victories for Barack Obama putting him in a virtual tie with Clinton in the delegate race. Obama took 68 percent of the vote in Washington, 68 percent in Nebraska, and 57 percent in Louisiana. Clinton finished with 31 percent in Washington, 31 percent in Nebraska, and 36 percent in Louisiana. Obama won by 21 percent in his narrowest victory on Saturday and as much as 37 percent in Washington. The superdelegate ?sham?, is the only thing keeping Obama from leading a race where he has won 18 of 30 states. Barack Obama has the majority of pledged delegates but Clinton is still leading because she got an early start on soliciting superdelegates. While it is true Senator Clinton has won some of the larger states, Obama has the majority of states. Obama has won on the east coast, all across the Midwest, the plains states and states on the ...
