Sorrowful Neglect
2008-06-18 11:03:00 I don?t begrudge the nice sendoff for Tim Russert, with Dubya making an appearance as noted here, though I think it?s utterly tasteless for him to do so while continuing to avoid the funerals of our service people killed in his Iraq war.And kudos to CBS correspondent Lara Logan for reminding us about the sacrifice of our military here; this takes a lot of guts on her part. Like you I?m sure, the only ?news coverage? I see involving our military in Iraq is ?happy talk? fluff about them coming home safely or being honored in some fashion; good news to be sure, but hardly the whole story.Another network TV journalist showed Logan?s type of courage once earlier, and Digby tells us here what happened as a result (typical for our corporate media).

What gives with Illinois nursing home neglect
2008-02-28 17:32:00 The good, the bad and the fix.The GoodA nursing home, sometimes called skilled nursing facility (SNF), or skilled nursing unit (SNU). But most of the time it is known as a rest home. A place of residence for people who require constant nursing care and have significant deficiencies with activities of daily living. Residents include the elderly and younger adults with physical disabilities. Adults 18 or older can stay in a skilled nursing facility to receive physical, occupational, and other rehabilitative therapies following an accident or illness. My mother-in-law stayed in one going through physical therapy. In the United States, our nursing homes are required to have a licensed nurse on duty 24 hours a day, and during at least one shift each day, one of those nurses must be a Registered Nurse. Is Physician Neglect Costing Smoking Patients Life?
2008-02-13 23:59:00 by John R. PolitoPhysicians will exhaust their knowledge base, energy and skills to stop bleeding and save the patient's life. But when the smoking patient arrives, a patient whose circulatory and respiratory systems are being gradually devastated by chemical addiction to smoking nicotine, the patient's self-destruction and slow suicide are either ignored, or they are reminded of the obvious, "you need to quit smoking."On February 7, the World Health Organization released a 342-page report entitled "WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008." It opens with a full page reminder that, "in the 20th century, the tobacco epidemic killed 100 million people worldwide." It then predicts that, "during the 21st century, it could kill one billion."If true, how much culpability should be attributed to medical haste, apathy regarding smoking related disease processes, or ignorance of such elementary nicotine dependency recovery concepts as the "Law of Addiction," a principle backed by the...

Marketing Basics: The Fundamentals We Tend To Neglect
2008-02-04 22:53:00 If you're attacking your market from multiple positions and your competition isn't, you have all the advantage and it will show up in your increased success and income. -Jay Abraham When marketing your small business, you have to remember that you are embedding a message in each unit you sell; a message that you hope will aid your market in distinguishing you from the others, because consumers don't just buy a product, but perceived benefits as well. Jeans, fro example, are clothing articles made of denim, but Calvin Klein attaches sex appeal to every pair, and Lee sells individuality. Coke sells happiness in a bottle , while Pepsi sells youth.Ironically, I have observed that in most cases due to our ardent desire to pursue our customers, we tend to neglect the basics or fundamentals of marketing where all of our small business efforts hinge.. When engaging on a marketing campaign, online or off-line, consider the following marketing basics:Product. Pay attention to your product ...

lots of questions about landlord neglect
2008-01-26 21:48:00 I have major issues that my landlord just will not address. First of all, my refrigerator leaks and leaves puddles of water under my bottom drawer. Then, the water bladder exploded and water gushed everywhere. He came in a put in some old parts from another old bladder tank to fix it.He didn't clean the water up in the closet when he was done and now there is lots of mold in there. The water barely comes out of the sink and when it comes on it goes off on off on and draws LOTS of electricity. My daughter has hole in her bedroom floor and there are also soft spots. My ceiling links in 4 places in the living room and also in the back bedroom. He still has LOTS of his belongings here that he was suppose to remove 3 months ago. Some of my kitchen drawers have no backs to them, so my stuff is constantly falling behind them. One of the double pain windows in broke on the outside. I have addressed these to him and still nothing. I have not paid my security deposit. he called me today and...

Abuse of Our Elders - "Time to Stop The Shame!"
2008-01-22 13:15:00 by Ray FernandezMany people are horrified by stories of elder and elder financial abuse all over this country and write then off to sibling rivalry or happenstance. However we at E.A. will tell the truth "Elder abuse is such an ugly crime". Its victims are left to suffer in silence and loneliness, often at the hands of the very people charged with their care." This quote was taken from Napa Register article by Paul Seave entitled; "Facing the facts on elder abuse."We will continue to tell you about this non regulated, wide open field, where there is no Federal or State Legislation requiring fingerprinting for non-certified caregivers who are going into the homes of our elderly. When we hear that County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein stated that he had heard stories from the State Parole System that parole officers are telling convicts that home care giving is a promising field for gainful employment. Parolees are able to get the work without a lot of background checking we are goi...

Elder Justice Act - Doesn't Anybody Care? Enough Dilly Dallying!
2007-12-18 13:00:00 Contra Costa Times Editorial SeriesALL ACROSS CALIFORNIA,(America) defenseless old people are being robbed of their life savings by heartless predators.Perhaps they suffer from Alzheimer's Disease. They're physically weak from a chronic illness. Lonely and isolated. Dependent upon someone else to take care of them. Afraid of being sent to a nursing home. Financially unsophisticated."The lioness goes to the watering hole because that's where the gazelles are," says Alameda County District Attorney Eileen McAndrew who heads the elder abuse unit. "They don't find the strongest ones, they find the small, the sick the lame and the old."Criminals and the criminally-minded target vulnerable elderly people because, like the gazelles, they're such easy prey. What's so outrageous is that, for the most part, predators are getting away with it.Yet despite the magnitude of the problem, the federal government hasn't taken any significant steps to protect elders. We have federal laws to pro...

We are all so broken up about this still,.she was an American citizen and she died overseas with none of her children to be by her side how cruel is that!Elder abuse must stop,.and families need to watch over their elderly better,.we feel we should have called the authorities in Spain but now it is too late for that, she was only visiting her family member for a little while, like a vacation and we couldn't stop her from going to Spain, besides, who knew she would be financially abused?Never assume that everything is OK,.always watch your elders like you would watch children, they are more vulnerable than most...

Vehicle Neglect Can Take the Pun Out of Thanksgiving
2007-11-13 23:55:00 Don’t let soaring gas prices gobble up your hard earned money this Thanksgiving weekend; carve out some time to perform some simple fixins on your vehicle for better gas mileage, advises the Car Care Council. Or how about: Before stuffing your family in the car… Don’t hit the road on a wing and a prayer… Get a leg up on the traffic by… More miles per gallon is all gravy… The dinner and the driving — it’s all about the gas… OK, had enough? Put a fork in it already? Got your attention? Seriously though, Thanksgiving is one of the most heavily traveled holidays by vehicle and gas mileage can be easily improved by checking a few basic items on the car. Start with the tires and make sure they are inflated properly. When they aren’t, it is similar to driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon. Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month and don’t forget the spare. Air filters should no...
