How the neighborhoods got their names
2012-01-30 17:44:00 Did you ever wonder why some of the city’s neighborhoods got their names? Some of them are self-explanatory – Lakeview, South Loop, River North – but others are kind of strange. Since I’m a giant nerd, I decided to research popular neighborhoods’ names and include it in this weeks ‘Did You Know, Chicago?’. Pilsen This... Read more »
Is Pullman really one of America's great neighborhoods?
2011-10-05 14:21:00 The American Planning Association has select Chicago’s Pullman neighborhood as one of its Great Places in America for 2011: Pullman’s timeless features have contributed to the renaissance of this handsome former company town. An experiment in industrial order and community planning, the neighborhood features a design that was intelligent in 1880 and “smart” today. The... Read more »
In Chicago, even wealthy black families live in poor neighborhoods
2011-08-08 23:15:00 Unlike the Jeffersons, affluent minority families aren’t always “movin’ on up.” A new study of recently released census data shows that wealthy black and Hispanic families often live alongside much poorer neighbors. White families in Chicago making more than $75,000 a year live in neighborhoods where only 7.6 percent of their neighbors make considerably less...
Chicago's once-hot neighborhoods: Washington Park
2011-06-01 20:59:00 Back in June of 2006 YoChicago spotlighted eight neighborhoods as Chicago's hottest hottest neighborhoods. At the time, Yo's reporter wrote: At first glance, an observer might see only a desolate landscape of boarded-up stores, vacant lots and blatant drug dealing, but, like nearby Woodlawn, Washington Park is perhaps a diamond in the rough. When I've taken a closer look at Washington Park I've seen the "desolate landscape of boarded-up stores, vacant lots and blatant drug dealing" and what I've seen sparkling in the rough was broken wine bottles and windshield glass. The park itself is a separate story. It's one of Chicago's great treasures, well-maintained, enjoyed by many and largely free of the gang activity that plagued it years...

Number of homes listed for rent in downtown neighborhoods falls again
2011-05-13 21:31:00 Another Friday brings another low number of downtown homes listed for rent on the MLS. At this time last year, 1,350 condos, townhomes, and single-families in 14 downtown ZIP codes were available; as of this morning, there are 817. Leading the 182 homes listed in the last 7 days is a three-bedroom / three-bath on the 43rd floor of Park Tower, 800 N Michigan Ave. At $21,900, it's the second most expensive rental in the city. The unit features unobstructed views of the lake to the east, stone and hardwood finishes, a master suite with an Italian steam room and huge walk-in shower, a state-of-the-art kitchen, an upscale sound system, and motorized shades. Renters also get access to all...
Chicago's Real Haunted Houses and Neighborhoods
2010-10-19 17:07:00 From the Fort Dearborn Massacre to the Eastland Disaster and beyond, Chicago has much tragedy in its past. And from tragedy comes the ghostly tales of those who lost their lives, yet aren't quite ready to move on to whatever comes next.
Investing in our Neighborhoods: Quench owner expands to offer fresh foods
2010-08-26 18:59:00 I was born on the south side of Chicago. And after a two year stint in Justice (don't ask - too far), I came back to the South Side and now a home owner. No, I am not in Bronzeville, the hip, fabulous historic neighborhood, (despite the fact that my dissertation study is focused there), I am a Chatham resident. Driving down Cottage Grove, did you know that there is not a grocery store from 95th street until 69th? Thankfully, Target expanded their grocery line in April, but that is a long stretch of road not to have a grocery store. There is a Pete's Produce on 87th street, but that is closest to Stony Island. Chatham Food Market is...
New listings priced near half a million in seven Chicago neighborhoods
2010-08-23 23:54:00 Yesterday afternoon I pulled up a list of homes priced at or near $500,000 (a range of $490,000 to $510,000, if you must know), that have been on the MLS for no more than 30 days. Here are seven examples of homes currently on the market for a half-million in neighborhoods spread across the city. South Loop: A 1,485 square-foot, two-bedroom / two-bath condo at The Columbian (pictured), 1160 S Michigan Ave. Features hardwood floors; marble and granite finishes; stainless steel appliances; and walk-in closets. Amenities and services include a door staff; a party room; a fitness center; a sun deck; and a dog run. Monthly assessments are $506. Walk Score: 95/100; Transit Score: 100/100. Austin continues to lead Chicago neighborhoods in foreclosure filings
2010-06-14 22:04:00 The Austin community area came in first among in foreclosures in 2009 and continues to be the leader of the pack going into this year. According to the latest report from the Woodstock Institute, Austin saw 208 foreclosure filings in 1Q '10, down more than 27 percent from 1Q '09 but still ahead of all other community areas. In 2009 there were 948 foreclosure filings in Austin; Belmont Cragin followed with 934, and West Ridge with 800. Austin had 38,253 housing units in 2000 and was projected to have almost exactly the same amount by 2010, according to census figures hosted by the Metro Chicago Information Center. The 171 condos, townhomes, and single-families currently listed in Austin have a...

North Mayfair named one of best "old-house neighborhoods"
2010-02-18 22:56:00 Looking for a cute old home? Try North Mayfair on the Northwest side near Pulaski and Elston, says This Old House magazine. The article about the 51 best old home neighborhoods in the U.S. reported that you could find a bungalow in the 'hood from abou $218,000. The neighborhood keeps in shape with the help of its North Maywood Improvement Agency, which helps keep out oversized developments and cleans up local parks. Pictures of the neighborhood look almost suburban and I love the effort the neighborhood is taking to keep some of the characer in the classic Chicago bungalows. Bungalows can be a fun alternative to new construction condos ifyou don't mind living a little further from the Loop or are...

Wentworth Gardens struggles to bridge the gap between neighborhoods, gangs
2009-11-04 21:52:00 Beatrice Harris, resident leader at Wentworth GardensBeatrice Harris calls everybody baby. "How ya doin', baby?" "Hey, baby." "Don't worry about it, baby."She's earned the right. As one of the matriarchs of Chicago's Wentworth Gardens, she says she's had a tough job in the last few years, trying to make one community out of a divided complex. For years, Wentworth, a small housing development directly south of the White Sox stadium, served as a "relocation resource" in the Plan for Transformation. As Chicago tore down the massive high rises that were Wentworth's neighbors, like Stateway Gardens and the Robert Taylor Homes, Wentworth took in many of those displaced by the demolition. The low-rise development is a patchwork quilt of families from...
Most neighborhoods don't have registered block clubs
2009-10-30 19:12:00 Block clubs tackle a range of issues, from crime to development to zoning changes, and help improve the quality of neighborhood lifeFor a city that focuses heavily on neighborhood identities, Chicago isn't very street-wise.There are only 47 block clubs registered with the Chicago Police Department, according to a RedEye analysis of data posted to www.chicagopolice.org on Tuesday morning. Most neighborhoods don't have a registered block club, and there's not a registered club in the space west of Halsted Street to the suburbs, between Roosevelt Road and 47th Street. The police define block clubs as "groups of people who have homes and families on any given block in the city and have organized to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods."...
What's the personality of Chicago neighborhoods?
2009-10-26 14:17:00 RedEye used new research from the University of Toronto to estimate tics of famous Chicagoans, based on neighborhoods they've been known to haunt.Defining Chicago's neighborhood personality mapsChicago TribuneWhile Chicago's crosstown rivalry often displays itself in the world of sports, the split may run deeper than visceral attachments to the Cubbies or the Sox.According to newly developed personality maps, the Windy City is balkanized on a whole different level.People who view themselves as extroverted and agreeable tend to cluster on the South Side, while more experimental types with neurotic tendencies are living to the north and along the lake, the maps indicate. A sort of Bill Veeck versus Woody Allen divide."It always amazes me how patterns start to happen," said Kevin...

La Isla (The Island), one of the best kept secrets in Buenos Aires
2008-04-03 20:25:00 La Isla (The Island), enclosed between Gelli y Obes, Copérnico, and Galileo streets in Recoleta, is dominated by sophisticated and high class buildings and embassies. Due to its particular layout, with stairs and slopes, this spot is almost free of traffic and noise. All these features make this one of the most exclusive and upscale areas in Buenos Aires. The area, up and behind the slope where the monument to Bartolome Mitre is located, occupies only 5 square blocks, and is little known even by locals, even though it is located in one of the most visited neighborhoods in the city, surrounded by the National Library, Plaza Francia, Plaza Mitre, Buenos Aires Design Center, and Las Heras Avenue. This peaceful retreat was once a country estate owned by the Hale Pearson family, with an English style park. Around 1910 the estate was sold and divided into different plots of land, and the final design was performed by architect Bouvard, director of Parks in Paris. From the original estate ...

Properties in central Jerusalem neighborhoods - Talbieh, the German Colony
2008-03-20 23:27:00 Property deals in the second half of 2007 were closing at levels similar to the first half of 2007, as israel real estate price increases began slowing. The flow of overseas buyers has slowed greatly in recent months. The primary explanation for this slowdown is the economic crisis in the U.S. and the collapse of the dollar. Nevertheless, there is a feeling among prospective apartment buyers that Jerusalem property owners are asking too much for exclusive homes."There certainly is a slowdown," one agent says. "There is a feeling that while foreign residents behaved naively in the past and bought just about anything for any price, they are now wiser."

Residents lucky enough to live on this ridge attach premium value to their homes because of their unsurpassed views of the city, mountains, sea and islands. Most of the area has curving streets with mature trees and foliage. The topography of the Riviera is relatively steep and not easily reached via walking or biking. Best Neighborhoods
2008-02-28 23:15:00 While living and working here in the Foothills since 1996, I have come across many wonderful neighborhoods. My intention is to highlight them as time permits. Keep in mind the "bests" I blog about here on this site are those I have seen or know about that have wowed me, but definitely not to say they are the only good ones. That includes this neighborhood category. Other beautiful neighborhoods I hope to get to soon include: Kalithea in El Dorado Hills with lots overlooking Folsom Lake and the Sacramento Valley, Hacienda De Estellas in Shingle Springs, and Highland Hills in El Dorado Hills. The homes for sale and prices are as of the date I write the blog, so if you are interested in a particular neighborhood and the blog was written more than 2 weeks prior, please email me for an update on available listings and prices in that neighborhood.
Santa Barbara Neighborhoods - San Roque
2008-02-28 19:25:00 San Roque - Santa Barbara Few residential neighborhoods of Santa Barbara can boast the rich historical background of the San Roque and Rutherford Park areas. Ten thousand years ago the area, bounded by Ontare Road, Foothill Road, Alamar Avenue and State Street, was an open expanse of treeless grassland, sloping up to the knees of the foothills and bisected by the jungled course of San Roque Canyon. Now a built-up, economically stabilized suburb, it is admired for its sweeping curved streets, its luxuriant landscaping, and its harmonious blend of many architectural themes - Spanish Colonial, English Tudor, French Normandy, California Redwood, Italian and American Colonial, mostly built since 1925. San Roque features older, custom homes with charm. For many, San Roque is Santa Barbara's quintessential family neighborhood. The entire area is relatively flat and great for walking or biking. Most homes have views of the mountains. Learn more about ...

Santa Barbara CA Neighborhoods - Mission Canyon
2008-02-23 01:18:00 Mission Canyon Mission Canyon, which with the Old Mission complex and the area bounded on the south by Mission Street, making up Santa Barbara's "Mission District," is unique. No residential neighborhood in the city boasts a richer historical background, or offers more relics and landmarks of Old Spanish Days Fr. Junipero Serra, when he helped found the Royal Presidio of Santa Barbara in 1782, intended Santa Barbara's Franciscan mission to be built in El Montecito near the present site of Our Lady of Mount Carmel church on East Valley Road. But four years later, when his successor, Fr. Fermin Lasuen OFM, arrived to establish our mission, he decided that Montecito was too infested with grizzly bears and renegade Indians to risk building a mission so far removed from the protection of the presidio soldiers, so he looked elsewhere.
