Neil Diamond Concert Review: A Strange Craigslist Experience
2008-08-07 15:26:00 There?s some type of saying involving a journey and destination. That the journey is more important or something. I?m not exactly sure. Anyway, here?s a story about both.Earlier this week, I pleaded with anyone out there to give me free or reduced tickets for Neil Diamond?s DC concert. Shockingly, there was no response. However, my wife decided that it would be her mission to try to find me tickets. Enter Craigslist. After several inquiries, she arranged to purchase tickets through someone named Adam. (This is not his real name; actually, it is his real name). Although the face value of the two tickets was $85 each (not including the almost $15 each in Ticketmaster fees), we reached an agreement on Monday evening to buy them for $50 each. This is where things get strange. On Tuesday morning, Adam sent an e-mail to my wife stating that he received a bid for the tickets for $56 each and wanted us to go higher. Four songs in the set came from the new album, Home Before Dark; however, he performed none from the previous 12 Songs LP. They may need to eat their words now as the singer has also achieved his first chart topper of original material on the U.K. albums chart.Home Before Dark not only sets a personal record for Diamond, but also a British chart record with Diamond being the artist to take the longest to achieve their first number one album of original work.Diamonds album history in the U.K. starts a little later than the U.S. with the live album, Gold, being his first chart entry in 1971. For original material, he peaked number three with 1980's Jazz Singer soundtrack. He also peaked at number three with the live album Love at the Greek in 1977 and had a number one album in 1992 with compilation The Greatest Hits 1966-72. In total, he charted 29 albums in Britain before Home Before Dark.

The album, his second with Rick Rubin, sold 146,000 copies last week well above Toby Keith's 35 Biggest Hits which moved 103,000 units. Diamond first appeared on the album charts in 1966 with his Bang Records release The Feel of Neil Diamond and would place a total of 44 albums on the chart before his latest would reach the top. Madonna's Hard Candy falls to number three with sales of 94,000, down 66% from its debut week.Total album sales for the week were 8.12 million units, down 4.6% from the same week last year.
