Review: ‘They Knew They Were Right: The Rise of the Neocons’
2008-01-12 14:15:00 [Two of my finest teachers, Ernest Nagel and Paul Weiss, were also brilliant Jews who commuted to CCNY from Brooklyn. I was tempted to join the faculty there but fortunately chose to do the bulk of my teaching at Brooklyn College which was becoming our dominant CUNY port of entry college. The neocons were not the only students to derive from there and I would hate to have any lingering note left by this article that CCNY was the source of such destructive madness. The reviewer here identifies the movement as being primarily Jewish which it may be. But we never would have arrived in Iraq without the “decision-maker,” grandson of a man who flirted with the Nazis: http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/s-tory/0,12271,1312540,00.html Senator Prescott Bush was a bit of a jerk — like his grandson. Schooling NeoCons on Intelligence Analysis
2007-12-10 01:09:00 by Larry C. Johnson Listening to the howls and foot stomping tantrums from Newt Gingrich and John Bolton this past week as they reacted to the latest National Intelligence Estimate on Iran’s nuclear weapons program, one would think that communist jihadists bent on raping Mother Teresa on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier arrived in Washington. Gingrich called the estimate a “coup d’etat” by former State Department officials. And Bolton insists that the intelligence community engaged in policymaking rather than analysis. Harumph!! Leave it to Newt Gingrich to believe that providing people with truth is the equivalent of a coup. And John Bolton – a black pot if ever there was one – is angry that intelligence is being used to fix a policy. That’s like listening to John Wayne Gacy complaining about men who get their jollies by raping and murdering teenage boys. Save the faux outrage Bolton. Folks like Gingrich and Bolton only accept intelligence if it corresponds to their pr...
Is intervention in Pakistan the neocons? first good idea?
2007-12-09 04:38:00 Defense has traditionally been an arena for hawks. In particular, the present administration took terrorism and ran with it. The 2008 Republican presidential candidates all have their arms outstretched to grab the issue when the outgoing president passes it off like a baton. Progressives tend to shy away from the subject of defense. Bringing it up, they fear, might prompt Bush & Co. to move another civil liberty to the recycling bin of freedom’s hard drive. Besides, as if Islamic fanaticism were one big evil genie, we subscribe to the notion that it can be lured back into the bottle with diplomacy, aid and trade. Not to mention vacating the Middle-East’s premises. Were those measures to meet with success during a Democratic presidency, we’d still be looking at a substantial lead time before al-Qaeda et al delivered some peace dividends. While waiting, we’re just as vulnerable to attack as when the terrorism ball is in Bush’s court. Proactive to a fa...
Ron Paul Plays Chess With The Neocons
2007-12-07 08:28:00 Ron Paul a political underdog has been gaining support across the country. Paul's political chess opening is compared to that of the "Giuoco Piano" which is Italian for "quiet game" or the Giuoco Pianissimo which is Italian for "quietest game"Paul favors a slow strategical grass roots battle by gradually building up tactical opportunities which explodes later into the political middle game and finally winning the endgame.Paul aims for a slow buildup deferring his major thrust until it can be prepared. By avoiding an immediate confrontation in the center Paul prevents the early release of tension with a solid consistent message of liberty and freedom. Entering a political positional maneuvering middle game which could propel him to the Republican nomination and finally President of the United States.According to James Buchanan, "if this were a chess game, the Neoncons have just put our king in check."The Neocons are against Ron Paul's foreign policy of non intervention. NeoCons Go Ballistic on Iran NIE
2007-12-07 00:38:00 by Larry C. Johnson “How can you trust the intelligence community to get it right on Iran? They got Iraq wrong in 2002 and now this?” The “this” is the NIE on Iran and its search for nukes. That in a nutshell is one of the prevalent reactions of neocons and Bush true believers. But wait, there is more. John Bolton told Wolf Blitzer that the NIE was the handiwork of exiled State Department officials hell bent on undermining Bush and this country. Well, I think it’s potentially wrong. But I would also say many of the people who wrote this are former State Department employees who, during their career at the State Department, never gave much attention to the threat of the Iranian program. Now they are writing as members of the intelligence community, the same opinions that they have had four and five years ago. This is one of the neocon talking points. Check out the ravings of Norman Podhoretz, a senior statesman of the neocons. The Pod Man wrote: I must confess to suspe...

Newsweek: In Anticipation of Post-Bush "World War IV" Neoconservatives Tran
2007-10-08 02:40:00 Neocons can't help but slink around Washington, D.C. The Iraq War has given the neoconservatives?who favor the assertive use of American power abroad to spread American values?something of a bad name, and several of the Republican candidates seem less than eager to hire them as advisers. But Rudy Giuliani apparently never got that memo. One of the top foreign-policy consultants to the leading GOP candidate is Norman Podhoretz, a founding father of the neocon movement. Podhoretz is in favor of bombing Iran because of the country's unwillingness to suspend its uranium-enrichment program. He also believes America is engaged in a "world war" with "Islamofascism" and that Giuliani is the only man who can win it. "I decided to join Giuliani's team because his view of the war?what I call World War IV?is very close to my own," Podhoretz tells NEWSWEEK. (World War III, in his view, was the cold war.) "And also because he has the qualities of a wartime leader, including a fighting spirit ...
The Next Step in the Neoconservative March on Iran
2007-09-28 23:36:00 by Daan de Wit This article has been translated into English by Ben Kearney. While the unrest slowly but steadily increases on the surface and the pressure on Iran grows via sanctions and tough statements from both sides, faith in a diplomatic solution has rapidly declined. The pressure will further intensify out in the open, but behind the scenes there isn't much credibility being given to this route. The ones involved are instead taking stock by further preparing themselves for a war with Iran. The next step in the neoconservative march on Iran has been taken. Newsweek writes: 'In Washington ... the consensus against a strike is firmer than most people realize. Similar commentary can be heard coming from Israel: '"Two thousand seven is the year you determine whether diplomatic efforts will stop Iran," says a well-placed Israeli source .... "If by the end of the year that's not working, 2008 becomes the year you take action."' 'The bal...
Ron Paul: Bush and Neocons Plotting an Iran Attack Within a Year
2007-08-29 18:51:00 Presidential candidate Ron Paul believes that an attack on Iran is highly likely within a year and that the Bush administration is simply waiting for the right opportunity, or event on which to blame Iran, before launching the assault. "If I were a betting man I would bet that they will attack Iran before the end of this administration, which means in the next year or so," the Congressman told the Alex Jones Show today. "The plans have been laid just like the plans were laid to go into Iraq a long time before they did but they had to wait for the right opportunity."

Socialists and Neocons versus Ron Paul
2007-08-23 18:08:00 From my experience, people who attack libertarians such as Ron Paul are often not serious about ideas. I have noticed the individuals who deride Dr. Paul do so mostly with shallow and dishonest attacks. Take the various socialists and welfare-statists who attack Ron Paul. I understand they support nationalizing healthcare while generally being against the occupation of Iraq. Because they oppose the occupation, they should find a powerful ally in someone as principally opposed to it as Ron Paul. Take also the neoconservatives in the mass (minded) media such as Faux News who attack and omit Dr. Paul. I understand they support the occupation of the Middle East but also believe government should be strictly limited in accordance with traditional conservative ideas (right? right???). In Ron Paul, they have a great opportunity to highlight these at least rhetorical parallels while simultaneously expressing reasonable disagreements. Because of these considerations, I believe it reasonable...

Neocons in waiting
2007-06-18 19:24:00 The debacle in Iraq has demonstrated that the neocon policy of democratization and pacification by gunpoint is a failure and makes the world a more dangerous place the ideology will not die. I have suggested here that Hillary Clinton is simply a neocon with a D after her name - a DLC democrat. Andrew J. Bacevich suggests that nearly all of the candidates for President, Democrats and Republicans are neocons in waiting.More troops, more troubles IS THE U.S. Army too small? The Democrats vying to succeed George W. Bush think so. Presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama all promise, if elected, to expand our land forces. Clinton has declared it "past time to increase the end-strength of the Army and Marines." Edwards calls for a "substantial increase." Obama offers hard numbers: His program specifies the addition of 92,000 soldiers.Leading Republicans concur. John McCain has long advocated a bigger Army. Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney are now chiming in. Giulia...

Pandering to the neocons
2007-06-06 04:13:00 I suggested below that George W. Bush had nothing to lose if he pardoned Scooter Libby and in fact might actually be able to salvage some of his diminishing base if he did. We sad and angry Bill Kristol proves my point inWho, Me? Bush evades his responsibility with respect to Libby. I FEEL TERRIBLE for Scooter Libby's family. Millions of Americans feel terrible for Scooter Libby's family. But we can't do anything about the injustice that has been done. Nor can we do anything to avert a further injustice looming on the horizon--Judge Reggie Walton seems inclined not to let Libby remain free pending appeal.Unlike the rest of us, however, George W. Bush is president. Article II, Section Two of the Constitution gives him the pardon power. George W. Bush can do something to begin to make up for the injustice a prosecutor appointed by his own administration brought down on Scooter Libby. And he can do something to avert the further injustice of a prison term. Will Bush pardon Libby? App...

Now, I bet you think I’m about to blast the neocons
2007-01-16 19:33:01 Now, I bet you think I’m about to blast the neocons on Capitol Hill for passing such an unconstitutional law like the theives in the night they are, don’t you? Well, only a LITTLE BIT. When I served in the military, I held a tad bit of contempt for my civilian coworkers who worked side by side with me performing the same exact job; accessing the same exact classified information, while being held to a radically different legal standard than I in the event a crime was committed. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), for divulging classified information (for example), I could have been given the death penalty, while my civilian coworkers could be written up and given a warning for committing that same crime. This has LONG been a huge problem in the military, and indeed, morale has adversely affected by this “loophole”. There has long been a need for military civilians to be held accountable under the UCMJ. If you don’t like it, then ... |
