How the FCC Comcast Decision Limits Net Neutrality
2008-08-29 16:13:00
-By Scott Cleland Contrary to conventional wisdom, the FCC’s order on Comcast’s network management practices, reined in the net neutrality movement much more than it advanced their agenda. The old adage is true here, be careful what you ask for — FreePress/Public Knowledge. At its rawest level, the chest-beating petitioners got the FCC to reiterate what ...

Net Neutrality in Canada
2008-05-30 02:23:00

The forgotten net traffic problem: Spam
2008-05-27 13:25:00

Rally on Parliament Hill for Net Neutrality
2008-05-22 13:48:00
Canadians outraged by the slow strangling of the internet are invited to share their outrage with the Parliament of Canada on May 27th. The Net Neutrality Rally will demand legislation to protect the internet from predatory practices like traffic shaping and data management, and to encourage transparency among ISP companies. Transportation assistance is available -- check out the Net Neutrality Rally webite for more details. This is an important first step in the battle to save the internet -- a strong showing at this rally could be the beginning of legislative protection for net neutrality in Canada. You can also check out savethenet.ca for more info on the movement to protect net neutrality in Canada. Cable: they keep talking but, they?re still blocking
2008-05-17 05:17:00
While the cable industry led by Comcast has slithered into the ambulance chaser never land of redefining language to fit questionable business practice, the studies we keep seeing say they are still blocking their subscribers’ traffic. This kind of up is down and wrong is right mumbo jumbo-ing of language is something the Telco’s ...
Net Neutrality Legislation Is Making Another Comeback
2008-05-15 14:56:00
A new bill, co-sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI),and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) would make ISPs who fail to provide service in a non-discriminatory manner subject to anti-trust violations. The legislation requires Internet service providers to connect with the facilities of other network providers on a reasonable and nondiscriminatory basis. It also requires them to operate ...
A Dumb Pipe What-If?

We always keep saying here at ThirdPipe that dump pipe is the ‘thing’. We usually get slapped for it by our peers. Everyone thinks that content is critical. Keeping the net free and open also applies to software
2008-05-03 03:59:00
There’s more to keeping the web free and open than encouraging fierce competition between access providers and equally impartial treatment of traffic. Lawrence Lessig on net neutrality
2008-04-21 13:32:00
Imagine a world where the power company controlled which appliances you could plug into the outlet, or charged special fees for some appliances and not others. It's a clever analogy used by Lawrence Lessig to explain the importance of net neutrality. Imagine a world where your ISP had the power to charge you more to visit some websites over others, to decide which websites you can visit on their network, and charged some websites more than others for network access. Lawrence Lessig -- Stanford Professor and founder of the Center for Internet and Society, makes the case in a recent interview with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now. Lessig also talks about the phenomenal growth of Google -- originally an experiment by a group of graduate students at Standford looking for a better search engine. He says that if telecommunications companies had the ability to 'traffic shape' and 'data manage' when Google was started, the Google folks would have needed permission from the network ...

Comcast titles new network micro management policy ?P2P Bill of Rights?
2008-04-17 04:35:00
This is comic relief at it’s best. The suits at Comcast have worked up a new clown suit to put around a new batch of network management policies that sound both ambiguous and theatening at the same time. “We’re going to formally create a DCIA working group and it will be open to any peer-to-peer ...

Net Neutrality is ?A Load of Bollocks?
2008-04-14 12:08:00
According to Neil Berkett, the new CEO of Virgin Media, ?This net neutrality thing is a load of bollocks.? Mr Berkett followed this by stating that Virgin Media is already in negotiations with content providers (such as the BBC) to provide their media faster. For a fee, of course. Those companies that refuse this commercial blackmail will find the "Information Superhighway" becomes the "Information Bus Lane."Sometimes you wonder why CEOs are allowed to speak in public. The last time I saw this level of idiocy was from the then head of Ratners jewellery stores, Gerald Ratner. You may well be saying to yourself at this point, "Ratners? Who?"Back in the 1980s Ratners sold "value" jewellery from high-street stores and were very successful. In fact, they had over 2,000 stores across the UK, and were making huge profits. The business was seen as one of the UK's great success stories. That was until Gerald Ratner opened his mouth at an Institute of Directors (IoD) Conference in 1991.So suc...
Net Neutrality, Canada?s CRTC To Weigh In?
2008-04-09 22:36:00
The subject of Net Neutrality seems to be reaching a head here in Canada. And the driving force behind it, is not consumers, or ?think tanks? but rather ISP?s themselves. Net neutrality in Canada under siege: Bell implements ?traffic shaping? ser
2008-03-31 15:02:00
Bell Canada - Canada's largest internet provider - is going ahead with its plan to undermine net neutrality. They call it ?traffic shaping? and ?traffic management?, but what it adds up to is the end of net neutrality for anyone on the Bell system. This includes Bell customers and non-Bell customers who contract with third party ISPs who use the Bell system. Bell and other Canadian ISPs such as Rogers have been ?traffic managing? for over a year, slowing some kinds of traffic down while privileging others. The data that Bell tends to target for slow down is peer-to-peer and torrent traffic. Last week, Bell applied the same ?traffic shaping? controls to its third party ISPs, service providers who use the Bell system but who are independent companies with their own clients. What this means is that Bell is screwing - not only with its own customers' data, but with the accounts of third party Internet users. Do you know whose system your ISP is using? April 7 is the date Bell...

Net Neutrality ? Not in Bell Canada?s Vocabulary
2008-03-27 21:04:00
Much has been written about net neutrality, or rather the lack of, and it is clear that many backbone providers have been practicing Traffic Shaping, that?s the fancy word they use for the practice of throttling high bandwidth applications, most notably BitTorrent traffic. Bell Canada, is not the first large Canadian backbone provider to indulge themselves ...

Clueless Big Label Music seeks protection money from ISP?s

OK Go says Net Neutrality good for music
2008-03-13 16:57:00
Tim Karr has an important read for music lovers up at HuffPo. In it, he covers OK Go’s descent into Washington to promote the importance of Net Neutrality to independent musicians. The band’s success is a testament to an open Internet. OK Go was propelled to national fame via the popularity of their YouTube videos. One, a treadmill dance along to the song “Here It Goes Again,” has been viewed more than 31 million times. “If people wonder whether the music industry will benefit from Net Neutrality they can look no further than us,” said OK Go’s lead singer and guitarist Damian Kulash in testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. “There really is some consensus here that Net Neutrality is good for music and good for musicians… I’m here to ask you today to preserve Net Neutrality and the openness of the Internet. I believe it’s critical to the future of music.” These days, when it seems like the dec...
Conyers May Propose Net Neutrality Legislation
2008-03-12 02:54:00
At a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, Committee Chair Rep. John Conyers said that net neutrality must be preserved, and stated that he is willing to propose legislation to do so. ?I am concerned that if Congress stands by and does nothing, we will soon find ourselves living in a world where those who pay, can play (on the Internet), but those who don't are simply out of luck,? Conyers said.
Why Is Kevin Martin's Opinion On Net Neutrality Different When It's Comcast

Why Is Kevin Martin's Opinion On Net Neutrality Different When It's Comcast Than AT&T? from the just-wondering dept FCC chair Kevin Martin is well-known as a good friend to telco companies -- but that friendship has never extended to cable companies. That's why it's rather amusing to see him try to act tough against Comcast, suggesting last Friday that the FCC doesn't look kindly on Comcast's traffic shaping practices while just a year ago, he was telling AT&T that the FCC wouldn't stop them fro

Comcast Paid People to Fill Seats at Net Neutrality Meeting
2008-02-27 06:22:00
portfolio.com: Comcast spokeswoman Jennifer Khoury said that the company paid some people to arrive early and hold places in the queue for local Comcast employees who wanted to attend the hearing. Some of those placeholders, however, did more than wait in line: They filled many of the seats at the meeting, according to eyewitnesses. As a result, scores of Comcast critics and other members of the public were denied entry because the room filled up well before the beginning of the hearing. | read more | T|B Opinion: Absolutely unacceptable. Net Neutrality Bill: No Web Traffic Discrimination
2008-02-13 21:41:00
newsWeek.com:  A Democratic lawmaker on Wednesday proposed legislation to stop network providers from playing traffic cop on the Internet. Rep. New Net neutrality bill frowns on ISP ‘favoritism’
2008-02-13 16:41:00
Comcast, AT&T, and other network operators would be expected to refrain from "unreasonable discriminatory favoritism" of content on their pipes under a recrafted Net neutrality proposal introduced Wednesday in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Edward Markey (Credit: U.S. House of Representatives) But this time around, the new bill (PDF) sponsored by Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of a House Internet and telecommunications panel, isn't directly forcing Internet service providers to follow specific rules. The new bill is an apparent effort to be less prescriptive than his previous efforts, which failed in a Republican-dominated Congress two years ago. "The bill contains no requirements for regulations on the Internet whatsoever," Markey said in a statement upon introducing the bill. "It does, however, suggest that the principles which have guided the Internet's development and expansion are highly worthy of retention, and it seeks to enshrine such principl...

Net Neutrality - You'll Be Sorry
2008-01-23 17:31:00
What is Net Neutrality? There is probably no bigger issue, that you know less about, than Net Neutrality. Unfortunately, by the time you realize what a huge impact it has on your life, it will likely be too late. Net Neutrality refers to the idea that you should be allowed to access any portion of the Internet you like. Internet heavyweights like AT&T, Comcast and Cox cable, however, want to break the Internet up, pare it down and charge you extra to access its different parts. Kind of like cable TV. You want HBO? another $230 every year. NFL Sunday Ticket? Another $250 annually. Even worse, if Net Neutrality fails, most of the websites on the Internet, no having an Internet Service Provider (ISP) pimping them, will simply wither on the vine and die.  Your ISP, not you, will be in control of what websites you can visit. Why Should I Care?Want to watch YouTube? Sorry, that competes with Hulu, you either have to watch the approved shows on Hulu, or pay a separate access fee to ...

Internet freedom means net neutrality, not ?pay-as-you-go? broadband
2008-01-21 18:00:00
Last week the news broke (via a leaked memo found by Broadband Reports) that Time Warner Cable was instituting a “tiered pricing” structure for broadband, where heavy bandwith users would have to pay more, rather than the customary “all you can eat” model of supposedly unlimited usage for a flat price. My article covers the issue in more detail, but the gist is that while tiered pricing structures are better than being kicked off your service for violating invisible bandwith caps, it’s still no substitute for building out new networks with more capacity. This leads me to the excellent paper authored by Sascha Meinrath on how the concept of net neutrality needs to be incorporated and expanded into a larger vision of Internet freedom. Meinrath’s paper (available as a free download, and which I found via the indispensable Natasha Chart) studies the landscape of America’s decrepit and costly broadband offerings in exhaustive detail. He hits al...
Net Neutrality Blocks Innovation

TechCrunch's Arrington Interviews Barack Obama On Tech Issues
2007-11-26 23:41:00
A great interview which shows the Senator's command of key Internet issues facing us. Q&A With Senator Barack ObamaNet NeutralityMichael Arrington: What is your position on net neutrality? Specifically, should tiered pricing be allowed by the access providers?Senator Barack Obama: As I stated during my visit to Google on November 14, I will take a backseat to no one in my commitment to network neutrality. The Internet is the most open network in history. We have to keep it that way. I will prevent network providers from discriminating in ways that limit the freedom of expression on the Internet. Because most Americans only have a choice of only one or two broadband carriers, carriers are tempted to impose a toll charge on content and services, discriminating against websites that are unwilling to pay for equal treatment. This could create a two-tier Internet in which websites with the best relationships with network providers can get the fastest access to consumers, while all ...
