2009-08-31 12:30:00 Welcome to the Million Dollar Journey August 2009 Net Worth Update. There’s not a lot to report this time as not a lot has happened in the month of August. The markets continue to edge upward but we are closing in on the volatile September and October months. Do you expect a significant market correction coming soon? Or do you think that their may be a smaller correction but continue on with the upward trend? With regards to savings, we did well this month sticking to the game plan. One of our financial goals is to save a percentage of our income regardless of how much our income increases. The cash is either used for RRSP/TFSA contributions, mortgage pay down, or a general cash account. Speaking of mortgage pay down, we have done well this year chipping away at the balance and we should meet our goal of eliminating our mortgage in early 2011. Assets: $457,350 (+1.07%) Cash: $4,500 (+0.00%) Savings: $13,000.00 (+30.00%) Registered/Retirement Investment Account: $69,...

January 2009 - Monthly Review
2009-02-01 16:21:00 Well its 2009... I hear about new layoffs and new aspects of the financial crisis every day. I am so thankful to be working right now and I've done my best to stay focused on the goal. As of January I only have about $781 left to pay on my credit card. Huge weight lifted off of my shoulders, but that's really only the beginning. As much as I want to celebrate this milestone, I'm really only back around zero. And technically I've already gotten myself back into debt - sort of. I had planned to get myself a new computer this summer. Mine is outdated and starting to act flaky. Have you ever gotten the blue screen of death? Its a regular occurrence for me these days. Plus my CPU can't handle some of the advanced engineering software I use at work and plan on using at home to prepare for a certification exam this summer. Long story short - I'm getting a new computer and I'm not paying for it in cash. Whaaa? Yes, its true. I'm getting it on a credit line at 0% which...

2008-11-06 18:24:00 I will be updating my net worth later tonight. It's getting close to Christmas and it's holiday spending time. I am still deciding if there is anything I want or need to buy for Black Friday. I really want a new 22 inch monitor so I can play poker more effectively online. I should also start on my Christmas shopping and not procrastinate like the rest of the world. We'll see how it all pans out. Stay tuned.PS. Now that the elections are over, let's see what happens to the USA!

2008-11-02 14:05:00 It's been quite a while since I've compiled and posted our net worth. You can view the details by clicking on the picture on the left. Cash savings has gone way down due to the new home down payment and upgrades done to the house. We were lucky enough to get a 10k check as a gift from the wife's relative. That helped cushion the blow. Naturally the market is way down, as well as the retirement funds. Our house was professionally appraised at 96k more than we paid for it. And according to Zillow, it's worth much more than that. So based on that, I'm keeping the appraisal value. The cars I'm keeping till' the end of the year, until I re-appraise them using the current bluebook value guide. Overall our debt has gone down. A car loan will go away in a couple of months. That will save us about 265 bucks a month, and a little over 3k a year. Overall, thanks to a home that has over 20% equity, and more valuable than paid for, it's a good net worth. Climbing the financial ladder s...

September 2008 - Income, Net Worth, Cash Back Review
2008-10-03 12:38:00 This was an ok month for me. It was the first time I've really tracked my spending since last spring. I wasn't sure if I could stick to my budget facing inflated prices. One interesting thing I noticed was that it wasn't too hard to stick to my tight spending restrictions for groceries and gas, but I have totally left other spending categories out of my budget. Donations, computer security, and auto related expenses to name a few. I've read different opinions on how to handle irregular expenses in a budget, but I haven't really tried them before. I usually just take that money from my debt reduction funds as the needs come up. It would be nice to have a rough annual estimate and treat it like a regular monthly expense into a savings account until I need it. That would definitely make it easier to make realistic financial goals. More on that later... now for the monthly review...September ChallengeGoal: $400 $650 Additional IncomeActual: $549.51I set the bar a little ...

August 2008 - Income, Net Worth, Cash Back Review
2008-08-30 14:49:00 This post pretty much sums up my summer progress. It has pretty much been a flat line for debt reduction. I've had setbacks such as the $1600 in car repairs in June. Luckily that has been paid in full this month. Just in time to avoid interest payments on my new Firestone Credit Card. I guess thats good. Next month I should be able get back on track and start knocking out this last $6500 in credit card debt.Speaking of my credit card debt, this month marks the one year anniversary of my debt-tracking spreadsheet. In August 2007 I reached a breaking point because I was getting nowhere with over $19,000 in credit card debt, $45,000 of student loan debt coming out of deferment, and $5,000 in hospital bills that I'd been chipping away at for almost a full year.I decided to focus my energy on the high interest credit cards. One year later, I've paid off almost $13,000 of that debt! I can't explain how great that feels, but its no time to slack off. I made it my goal to pay ...

I updated NetworthIQ on time so if you were paying attention then you'll see the information is the same. To explain some of the results... I had a net increase for the month. Here is the single bright spot from the month, I continued to invest diligently in my retirement accounts. I also continued to spend large amounts of money on stuff via my credit cards. I justified the purchases a dozen different ways, and put off doing this post for a couple of weeks out of frustration and shame at how bad I overspent.A run down of the spending is entirely centered around the house. We got a patio set for the newly fenced yard, a refrigerator for the garage, a used Ping Pong table, and a huge 40 gallon tank / stand for my turtle. The purchases were spurred on by my wife and I hosting our friends for our annual house party. We wanted to get the place into tip-top shape and be prepared for almost 20 of our close...

July Net Worth Update Coming Soon
2008-07-08 20:45:00 I haven't had time to get my July net worth so I will be updating it this week. I've been working hard on my 2 online businesses and I have a couple of more things in the works. I'm still not currently working because my new job is lagging with the background check. If all goes well I will be either starting next week or on July 28th. I'm in no rush to start because I've been using all my time to dedicate to learning new things and trying to make money. I added a new sponsor, My Credit Group, MyCreditGroup.com | Credit Repair Servicesbecause I am personally using them to help repair my credit. I've found some collections stuff I've been trying to remove for the past 2 years and it's still showing up. I'll put a review later on how their services actually go.

Net Worth Update: June
2008-07-02 02:39:00 This month was a total bomb. Ugh. Not much went right financially. The stock market tanked. My car broke down. I had a fence installed for the back yard that went over budget. I spent a ton of time and money on seemingly "minor" home maintenance projects. I added to my debt. My assets lost value. June did not treat me well.To make up for the shortfall I've bumped up my savings rate on my emergency fund from $100/month to $200. I am back in the rebuilding phase to get a little cash cushion. I've also cut costs on a few monthly recurring bills to try and gain back some ground. I cut my pest control service to be bi-monthly rather than monthly and decided to perform DIY termite control. I've got a few other cuts in mind that may help more over the next few months too. There is a short list of positives for the month. After doing some repairs on my '99 Lumina I found it is now worth slightly more than it was prior to the repairs. My house also appreciated due to the installation of t...

2008-04-11 04:03:00 Here is our balance sheet for the first quarter of the year: Our Net worth increased by $9288 (or 1.4%) this quarter. The return on our overall portfolio for the quarter was a negative 1.9%, however.I calculated our portfolio return using a neat formula that I first came across in the book The Four Pillars of Investing: Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio by William Bernstein. It goes like this:First find the portfolio value at the start and at the end of the period. Next, calculate the Net inflow for the period which is total amount of money you added to the portfolio during the period minus any money you took out. The Net inflow may be positive or negative. Then,Portfolio return = (Ending value-Net inflow/2)/(Starting value+Net inflow/2) - 1.Related posts:Net Worth update - December 2007: Up 1.3% Net Worth update - September 2007: Up 6.1%Net Worth update - June 2007: Up 7.4% Net Worth update - March 2007: Up 7.7% Our Net Worth over the yearsFinancial goals for retirementAs...
