A fundamental question that is seldom addressed by these studies, however, is why the brain uses the types of representations it does and what evolutionary advantage, if any, these representations confer. It is difficult to address such questions directly via animal experiments. A promising alternative is to use probabilistic principles such as maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference to derive models of brain function. This book surveys some of the current probabilistic approaches to model...

alessandro ludovico / neural magazine
2008-01-08 14:41:00
Régine Debatty recently posted a fantastic interview with Alessandro Ludovico on the freshly redesigned We Make Money Not Art. Ludovico is extremely active throughout the new media world as a theorist, educator and practitioner. I'm particularly fond of Neural, a magazine and companion art blog (pictured to the left) that he edits. I've been enjoying Neural for several years now and beyond the excellent art and media writing the publication also features engaging discussion and reviews of contemporary electronic music (a rarity in the digital art world). While the entire interview is quite interesting, I was particularly stimulated by Ludovico's description of his writing project(s): Sometimes I think of Neural as an info-gallery, the best info-gallery I'd want to read. If you want, it'd be defined as my personal narrative of the digital culture evolution, formed by important chunks of information condensed in a limited space... I always thought that the more cultural efforts ...

From Molecule to Metaphor: A Neural Theory of Language
2007-10-19 16:43:00
Jerome A. Feldman,The MIT Press | ISBN 0262062534| 2006|PDF| 379 Pages| 1 MB|In From Molecule to Metaphor, Jerome Feldman proposes a theory of language and thought that treats language not as an abstract symbol system but as a human biological ability that can be studied as a function of the brain, as vision and motor control are studied. This theory, he writes, is a "bridging theory" that works from extensive knowledge at two ends of a causal chain to explicate the links between. Although the cognitive sciences are revealing much about how our brains produce language and thought, we do not yet know exactly how words are understood or have any methodology for finding out.Feldman develops his theory in computer simulations--formal models that suggest ways that language and thought may be realized in the brain. Combining key findings and theories from biology, computer science, linguistics, and psychology, Feldman synthesizes a theory by exhibiting programs that demonstrate the requir...

Scientists Find Clues To Crack "Neural Code" of The Brain
2007-09-13 13:33:00
Decoding the complex electrical signals that brain cells use to "talk" to each other is a new and important frontier in neuroscience, one that could revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease. Now, a multicenter team, led by a researcher at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, says they have uncovered a vital clue to help decode that neural language. The groundbreaking work is published in Nature."We discovered that the specific timing of these electrical pulses is crucial to interpreting how the neural code works as the brain represents what it sees in the natural environment. Understanding the 'time scales' that matter to the brain gives us insight into which units of the neural code we need to focus on if we ever hope to decode it," explains lead author Dr. Daniel A. Butts, who is an Institute Fellow and instructor of computational neuroscience at the HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud Institute for Computational B...
Taking ecstasy in a hot club environment increases the risks of neural dama
2007-08-31 11:40:00
Spanish researchers at the University of Navarra have concluded that the ambient temperature at which ecstasy is taken influences the neural damage done by the drug. Using animal model studies in which rats were dosed with ecstasy at temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees centigrade, and examining the resultant neural damage, researchers have causally linked the ambient air temperature during consumption with an increased risk for neural damage and deficits. They explain that if ecstasy were somehow dosed directly into the brain, there would be no risk of neural damage, and the damage caused seems to be induced by the bodily metabolism of the consumed drug. Higher ambient air temperatures increase the speed and extent of the metabolism, and the higher the ambient air temperature, the greater the risk of neural damage. The problem for drug users is that people most often take ecstasy in a club setting, in which many people may share a poorly ventilated and confined space, greatly...

Self-massage can be adjusted gastrointestinal nerve function, reduce symptoms, improve digestive function, the methods of operation are as follows : (1) Mount abdominal law : The patient was supine and knees song. Overlaying two palm, abdomen placed in the center of the navel, in the middle and lower abdomen along Mount move clockwise direction about five minutes, in the belly with the appropriate sense of hot. After having prefers light weight, and then expanded the scope of Mount forward abdomen about 2 minutes. (2) wiping lumbosacral law : for patients with seating, waist flexion. Laminating handed five fingers, palms close prolapse, forced to rub sacrum, so continuous repeatedly about a minute so that the skin emblem heat, Heat a suitable sense. Both of the above methods of self-massage a two-day meeting, for 24 consecutive days and then every other day under the condition can be treated once, until symptoms disappear. source:China TCM web-China
Non-linear adaptive filtering using neural networks
2007-07-14 21:40:00
Neural network signal filters are more adaptive filters than Wiener filters where resulting signal is a product of minimisation mean-square error, Wiener filter is linear filter which is adapted for some specific environment. But linear adaptive filters are limited when noise has Gaussian process pattern. So if significant Gaussian noise is present then there is ...

Learning The Language of Thought: 4 Candidate Neural Codes [Developing Inte
2007-06-18 15:57:00
How does your brain represent the feelings and thoughts that are a part of conscious experience? Even the simplest aspects of this question are still a matter of heated debate, reflecting science’s continuing uncertainty about “the neural code.” The fact is that we still don’t have a clear picture of the ways in which neurons transmit information. Here’s a quick guide to current theories, beginning with well-established theories and moving into ideas that are considered more theoretical. The canonical model: firing rate Clearly, neurons encode some information in the rate of their firing. Although individual neurons are relatively unreliable and noisy devices, average firing rates across hundreds or thousands of neurons provides a more reliable spatio-temporal code for conveying information. Some recent evidence, reviewed below, suggests that this simple conception of the neural code is in need of elaboration. Firing rate coherence Read the rest o...

The Prognostic Significance Of Perineural Invasion In Prostatic Cancer Biop
2007-04-16 18:07:00
UroToday.com- Whether perineural invasion (PNI) identified in prostate cancer (CaP) biopsies is associated with disease recurrence is unclear from the literature. In an attempt to resolve this uncertainty, a systematic review was performed by Dr. Patricia Hamden and colleagues in the UK and published in the online edition of Cancer. What they found was that variable study design, execution and reporting excluded a definitive meta-analysis, but evidence suggests that PNI in biopsies was a significant prognostic indicator. The authors' strategy used 128 search terms to identify articles published between 1990 and 2005. A total of 41,295 titles were reviewed by at least 2 reviewers and 128 articles identified for close evaluation. Ultimately, 10 surgical and 11 radiotherapy articles on PNI in biopsies as it related to patient outcomes were used in the report. Data items specific to biopsy PNI in CaP included biopsy procedure (amount of cores, number of nerves present and ident...

Later Paternal Age Can Influence Neural Functioning
2007-03-31 04:25:00
Finally, we examined if paternal age was related to the risk for autism in our cohort. We found very strong effects of advancing paternal age on the risk for autism and related pervasive developmental disorders (Reichenberg et al., in press). Compared to the offspring of fathers aged 30 years or younger, the risk was tripled for offspring of fathers in their forties and was increased fivefold when paternal age was >50 years. Together, these studies provide strong and convergent support for the hypothesis that later paternal age can influence neural functioning. The translational animal model offers the opportunity to identify candidate genes and epigenetic mechanisms that may explain the association of cognitive functioning with advancing paternal age.
Method Developed for Mapping Neural Connections
2007-03-01 16:50:00
Researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have developed a new method for identifying all of the connections to a single neuron in the human brain. Researchers have said they won’t be able to understand the brain until they can put together a map of how billions of neurons are interconnected. The Salk researchers identified the connections by modifying the deadly rabies virus, turning it into a tool that can cross the synaptic space of a targeted nerve cell just once to identify all the neurons to which it is directly connected. With luck and given time, neural science researchers will be able to map all of the connections in the human brain, which will lead to a better understanding of how the brain--and hopefully, human thought and sensory perception--works.
