A New Year?s Reflection
2008-09-30 02:18:00
As many of you know, the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah begins tonight at sundown, so as I write these words, some of our readers are already celebrating the holiday. Every year, as the Jewish High Holy Days approach, I seek to engage in T’shuvah, the word literally means return (as if we return to the ...
The New Year - The New Year
2008-09-13 04:04:00
It?s been four years since The End Is Near, the last New Year album, long enough for musical fashions to have shifted significantly (out with the post-punk, in with the afro-beat!). Still, here are the two Kadane brothers, doing what they have always done, what has never, except maybe during the brief flourishing of slo-core, ...
Planning for a new year
2008-09-03 02:00:00
October is creeping up on us, and for most of us that means the beginning of the end of 2008, along with the nagging feeling that we should be doing some planning for 2009. This is the perfect opportunity to take stock of your security and compliance programs, and to develop a plan for improving things next year. If you've been following our various blogs here at RSA you probably realize by now that we espouse a security and compliance program based on three core pillars: it's information-centric, risk-driven and framework-based. Our compliance team has spoken with hundreds of customers from all over the world and in every industry segment this year, and we're finding that this approach is gaining acceptance at an ever-increasing rate. Organizations are realizing that they need to discover, manage and control their information assets in order to protect them...

‘Blake Incarcerated‘ might be out of prison in time to to celebrate the new year with his wife, Amy Winehouse. However, he needs to prove himself first. Happy New Year! (Thai New Year, That is...)
2008-04-14 01:08:00
The resolutions I haven?t been keeping have a second chance because today marks the start of the Thai New Year, Songkran.Songkran is an ancient celebration of the start of a new farming cycle, and it always falls sometime between the 10th and the 18th of April; this year, the celebration starts on the thirteenth (today!) and lasts for three days.To inaugurate the festivities here at Enlightened Cooking, I offer a Thai-inspired mango and chicken salad with an oil-free dressing. The latter is based on a more traditional Thai sauce made with palm sugar (the original is oil-free as well); it gets its oomph from brown sugar, quickly carmelized in a skillet, and further enhanced with lime and fresh ginger. It is scandalously delicious, particularly for brown sugar addicts like myself. But the fun doesn?t stop there: Songkran is a water festival, a theme symbolizing the cleansing and renewal necessary for the start of a new year. Multiple sources indicate that locals will use anything from ...

Thai New Year
2008-04-11 15:13:00
The Thai New Year (Thai: ???????? Songkran) is celebrated every year on 13 April to 15 April. It is also celebrated in Laos (called pi mai lao or 'Lao New Year' in Lao), Cambodia, Myanmar (where it is called Thingyan), and by the Dai people in Yunnan, China. Sri Lanka also celebrates a similar festival called Sinhalese and Tamil New Year on the same dates. The same date is celebrated widely throughout the Indian subcontinent, albeit based on the astrological event of the sun beginning its northward journey.New year traditionsSongkran at Wat Thai in Los AngelesSongkran at Wat Thai in Los AngelesThe most obvious celebration of Songkran is the throwing of water. People roam the streets with containers of water or water guns, or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. This, however, was not always the main activity of this festival. Songkran was traditionally a time to visit and pay respects to elders, including family members, frie...

2008 Tamil New Year Releases (April 14), Four movies release in kollywood
2008-03-28 19:57:00
2008 Tamil New Year Releases (April 14), is going to be a significant this year. Four movies are confirming their releases with the theatres. They are Yaaradi Nee Mohini on April 4, Nepali on April 10, Santosh Subramaniyan on April 11, and Arai 305il Kadavul on April 12. This way of films not releasing on the same day will get the benefit of opening day collections. The trade is also not very sure of how the IPL Twenty:20 matches to be played between 7 to 10 PM in the evening between April 18 and June 1 and televised live on Sony Max will effect the summer box-office. Please note that the live cricket coverage clashes with prime time cinema business of evening and night shows, which account for nearly 70 percent of the box-office collections of any film.So this time the Tamil film industry is playing it safe and trying to release the films a week before the IPL tournament. As usual all the four films due carry good pre-release reports, and if they live to their hype then it will be a ...

The Baha'i New Year
2008-03-26 17:59:00
Happy Naw Ruz EveryoneYear 165 of the Baha'i Era"It is a New Year; that is to say, the rounding of the cycle of the year. A year is the expression of a cycle of the sun; but now is the begining of a cycle of Reality, a New Cycle, a New Age, a New Century, a New Time and a New Year. Therefor it is very blessed"Abdu'l BahaThe Baha’i New Year starts on March 21, (the vernal equinox) which marks the first day of spring and the end of the Baha'i Faith’s annual Nineteen Day Fast. Naw Ruz means new day in Persian and it is one of nine holy days on which Baha’is suspend work. They typically celebrate the holy day at sunset on March 20 by gathering for prayer, as the sunset on which the holiday begins comes at the end of the Fast.Baha'is follow the Badi ("wonderful") calendar, which consists of 19 months of 19 days each (361 days), with the addition of "Intercalary Days" (four in ordinary and five in leap years) between the 18th and 19th months to adjust the calendar to the solar y...

Is Weight Loss your New Year Resolution?
2008-03-20 11:56:00
Losing weight, eating healthier and getting fit is the New Year resolution of many people. But most give up on the resolution within the first three months. Often, New Year?s weight loss resolutions are a recipe for failure due to unrealistic expectations and poor planning. This year, narrow your focus. Break your goals into manageable steps and by doing so; you are more likely to stick to you plans for longer. And the results of you success will be a source of encouragement.First, you must be ready to lose weight and get fit for yourself. Most weight loss experts agree that the key to long-term weight management evolves from permanent lifestyle changes and not just diet restrictions. Choosing a ?fad? diet that promotes quick weight loss does not work. You may lose weight, but gain it back just as quickly when you return to your normal diet. Diets do not work if long-term weight loss is your goal. So this New Year, make a resolution NOT to go on fad diets, but instead find a solutio...

A New Year
2008-03-03 04:23:00
2008 brings with it a lot of changes for us. The most significant is the selling of our home back in Malaysia. I was very hesitant about selling our home because I was so personally involved in the renovations - I chose all the tiles, supervised the contractor and organized delivery of all the furniture and throughout the 3 years we have been living there, slowly made it into our home. I even started cooking! It was an emotional time.In a way I should look forward to new beginnings - we will eventually settle in Australia so I am excited to go house hunting. The only scary part is having to commit to a Mortgage again considering that the interest rates in Australia is at an all time high with reports of further increase later this year. The price of houses are also expensive to us because of the exchange. We only get 1/3 of the value of the money received from the sale of our house! The Aussie dollar has strengthened so much and is almost par with the US dollar. We still have to bit...

New Year Friendship Exchange Performance
2008-02-25 04:29:00
Exchanging with the old folks and spastic kids that is..We invited the kids to come over to Jubilee old folks home. This is the reason why I didn't attend to Jay Chou's concert. It's still piercing through my heart when I think of it *cry*Since Teik Siang gonna conduct 2 songs in the performance, it would be too tired for him to drive to and flow from KL.Hence, we canceled the concert plan. It's absolutely the first time for me and other members too for performing in old folks home. The MCs were awfully nervous *smirk*Besides performance from my band, there were martial arts and junior choirs. After that would be karaoke section, games and magic show(not the lame one, we really hired someone who can do good magic). We did gave out ang pows, yeah even CNY is over they still get ang pows. The aunties and uncles are talkative, I said one word they would reply in ten.The they would be like nice elders advising us what is good and what is bad, the things we youngsters would usually ignore.A...
Chinese New Year/Imlek and Cap Go Meh 2559
2008-02-25 01:22:00
Since the year 2000 public celebrations of Chinese New Year in Indonesia have been legally permitted however in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, the mayor of the town issued a special decree, No 127/2008, forbidding any staging of barongsai and liong, or lion and dragon dance parades, to mark the New Year.Mayor Buchary Abdurrachman said any lion/dragon processions would cause traffic jams and might create social-ethnic conflicts among the people. We?re not telling people they can?t celebrate Chinese New Year, they can have lion/dragon displays but only in specified places [the Sultan Syarif Abdurrachman soccer stadium], not on the street/in kampungs. City authorities also instructed people to celebrate the New Year in a simple fashion.Related: Cap Go Meh in SingkawangIndonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Chinese New Year Traditions
2008-02-24 10:52:00
Chinese New Year Celebration is based on the start of the Lunar Year. As the year starts, there are a lot of activities Chinese practice to welcome the year with ,luck, fortune and prosperity. Back in China, there were a lot of temple fairs and fireworks during Chinese New Year’s Eve. Scheduled huge fireworks were anticipated especially in the central area of Beijing. We had our own celebration in a traditional Chinese restaurant called Hua Jia Yu Yuan. It was a feast literally as we devour ala carte orders that was a set for Chinese New Year. In Beijing, the streets are almost empty as a lot of people who came from different provinces went back to their home to celebrate this holiday. It was expensive to rent a van this time of year as they would not wait for you until the wee hours since the drivers will also celebrate with their families. Back in the Philippines, we celebrated Chinese New Year but not so much as Christmas or New Year. We had our usual tikoy (sticky ri...

Bye Bye Chinese New Year
2008-02-20 08:40:00
2 more days to go and CNY coming to an end. This year, CNY came and gone and I celebrated it in daze.  Seriously, I wasn’t aware how close it was when hubby asked me how many packs of ang pow he should prepare. Being a procrastinator as I always am, I was telling myself in the heart “why so early go prepare ang pow” and then without me realizing it, it’s already the eve. Many people would have keep track on the date, but I have lost count since baby’s arrival. All my energy and time has been focusing on the children. In order to welcome the festive, by right there are many things to do and prepare, but since I don’t celebrate at my own home, there’s actually nothing much to prepare. No need to bake cookie…just go back my in-laws house and grab from the hampers. No spring cleaning though hubby did ask the maid to take down the curtain to wash sometime back (isn’t that suppose to be my job to tell the maid what to do??? I forgot!...
