Music and sound enthusiasts should know that today, May 23, 2012 marks the 78th birthday of Robert Moog (2005), father of modern electronic sound. The New York City-born inventor pioneered the electronic instrument market--one of his most famous creations being the Moog synthesizer. Google is paying tribute on their homepage via an actual flash-based version of the machine. Users can play, record and even embed their own custom sounds. Check it out and then find out more about Moog's instruments and legacy at Moog Music Inc.

It's not often we focus on any new Streetwear brands here at República. In other words, you've got to be pretty interesting to impress us. Enter Deadline Ltd a New York City-based apparel line that draws its inspiration from early and late 90's Hip-Hop music and culture. We're talking H.N.I.C. snapbacks, Boyz N The Hood font and No Limit-inspired graphics. With all the bland, clean-cut couture in recent Streetwear, we can appreciate some great urban sensibility. Word is bond son!

We stumbled upon this documentary on the European-born architect, Costas Kondylis, thanks to Thirteen and their series Treasures Of New York: Building Stories. Needless to say, we were rather impressed with the story of an immigrant architect who struggled to find artistic identity in the midst of pressure and compromise from real estate forces. Definitely worth a peep!
China Luxury Spending Seminar. New York City On May 16, 2012.
2012-05-13 06:12:00
Just got back from Los Angeles, where I met with long-time China hands, Sage Brennan and Renee Hartmann.  Since returning to the United States, Sage and Renee have formed China Luxury Advisors, a consultancy focused on helping luxury goods companies market to Chinese consumers both within and outside China. These days its difficult to find any consumer brand that is not at least considering the potential to sell to Chinese consumers — whether by entering the China market or by targeting the hordes of wealthy Chinese shopping and traveling overseas. In the luxury industry, interest is even stronger. One need only walk down 5th Avenue or Rodeo Drive (or Beverly Drive, for that matter, which is where I met Sage and Renee for coffee) to notice huge numbers of Chinese shoppers and Mandarin speaking sales associates in the boutiques to greet them.  Since Sage and Renee tell me that more than 50% of Chinese luxury purchases are being made abroad, these shops are getting it right. A recycling Czar for New York City - hooray!
2012-05-11 03:01:00
It's about time, eh? In a sign that New York City is getting serious about improving its poor recycling record, the city's Department of Sanitation is appointing a recycling industry innovator as its new "deputy commissioner for recycling and sustainability." The department plans to formally announce next week that Ron Gonen, 37, is assuming the newly created position to help the Bloomberg administration meet its goal of at least doubling the city's recycling rate from the current 15 percent by the year 2017. Mr. Gonen is a founder of Recyclebank, a company that awards points to consumers for recycling that they can redeem at local and national restaurants, stores and other retailers. He is also a co-founder of an environmental services firm that helps bring renewable energy to sport stadiums . This is great news to get NYC crankin' towards the #1 slot in the country with regard to Green Initiatives. So far, San Francisco is kickin' our butts!

West Coast-based MC, ScHoolboy Q was recently on New York City's Hot 97 FM declaring a personal PSA against the use of "Lean" aka "Sizzurp" aka "Purple Drank" aka highly-addictive-and-bad-for-yo-u codeine and promethazine. Q gave listeners a first-hand account of the awful withdrawal symptoms of the drug and even talked about how he's been pleading with fellow music peer, A$AP Rocky, to get off the stuff too. It's pretty real and the message is pretty clear--kids, don't do drugs that hurt you!

Harlem-based Hip-Hop phenom, A$AP Rocky, drops the video to his first and buzzing single, Goldie. Shot in Paris and littered with gold, naked women, and fancy attire, there' s really no question about how all the "trill" teenage fans are going to gravitate to this one. Oh yea, and the tune's got a really hypnotic instrumental that'll hook most listeners. Adults too. Enjoy!

Books. Pretty soon (we give it two more generations max) young folks won't even know what those are. But instead of moping about the digital age Colombian-born artist, Miler Lagos uses the soon-to-be-lost human relic to create his latest piece Home--an igloo constructed from hundreds of books. A simple and sweet concept. We doubt you'll run out of reading material in this humble abode. Fans in New York City can check out the installation now on display at the MagnanMetz Gallery.

Tough-on-Crime Lesbian to be New York City?s Next Mayor?

The media narrative notwithstanding, many conservatives would be willing to support a gay or lesbian candidate for public office if he or she advocated sensible policies.  Note for example the California Republican Party’s recent endorsement of Brad Torgan.  You can join me in supporting his bid to represent the citizens of California’s 50th Assembly district ...

Nasir Jones, better known as Hip-Hop legend, Nas, just dropped his latest single in New York City last night and the streets are already a buzzing! Sampling Jamaican Reggae staple, Super Cat, the Queens-bred MC taps into a real hardcore vibe reminiscent to his 1990's heyday. From the sounds of it we're guessing Nasir really means it when he raps "20 years in this game, looking 17." This is one tough track!

There's a big time battle brewing over a small section of New York City as this year's American elections take place. The debate is over the city's Congressional District 15, a jurisdiction over Harlem and some parts of Uptown Manhattan that have been overseen by Charlie Rangel for over four decades! A new proposition that takes into account the ever-increasing Hispanic population wishes to change the district boundaries and possibly give Uptown neighborhoods like Washington Heights, Inwood, parts of the Bronx and even Queens, their own representation. The idea, although heavily opposed by Rangel, is being spearheaded by advocacy group, The Dominican American National Roundtable. If approved by the courts, the proposed new district will be comprised of 66% Hispanics, something that clearly indicates why Rangel, who's relied mostly on older African-American support, would be opposed. An interesting battle to keep a close eye on as the playing field and politics evolve come electi...

"Meet Chef Jeremy Spector of The Brindle Room in Manhattan's East Village, a cozy, charming, neighborhood restaurant that sears up quite possibly, the best tasting burger in New York City. Chef Jeremy walked me through the design of The Brindle Room burger, explaining in detail what makes them so sought after and so terribly addicting. For me, it's all about the meat. There's something special about the beef in this burger. You can taste it in every bite, and feel the flavor develop with every chew. It's a quality that Jeremy likens to "a fine cheese or good wine". Truly, a burger for meat lovers." (video link) Video by

Bronx native and internationally-revered songstress/actress, Jennifer Lopez, is under major scrutiny for a recent Fiat commercial that she appears in. First, the ad was criticized when it was discovered that J. Lo's parts were actually shot in Los Angeles and not the New York City streets that the producers would actually have you believe (Brooklyn Bridge and the elevated 6 Train). Now, the ad is under more fire as a copyrighted graffiti mural (I Heart The Bronx) by the infamous Tats Cru was used without permission. Ms. Lopez and Co. can definitely expect a call from their lawyer. Yikes!

Hotel concierge, Amber Jones, knows a thing or two about getting around The Big Apple. But it's not the sights and sounds that she concerns herself about in her upcoming children's book New York, Phew York--it's the smells! Jones says that she got the idea for creating the scratch-and-sniff storybook about the different aromas (and stenches) of the city after she found herself walking towards the scent of nearby pizza, only to accidentally step in horse manure. A slew of publishing proposals and fundraisers later and she's getting ready to release the title this coming November. With 450 pre-orders already placed, we think it's pretty safe to say that this idea smells like success!

Fans can expect an official release of the t90 Laser IV on October 1st, 2011. But until then, just rest assured that Nike pulled out plenty of stops for this one.
