Rumors: Vidro, Bedard, Ibanez +
2008-07-15 14:42:00
A lot of us thought it absurd that Richie Sexson was let go before the even more useless Jose Vidro, but it seems order is slowly returning to the universe.  This from Prospect Insider’s sidebar: There are some rumors starting to swirl around the team as they left Kaufmann Stadium today that designated hitter Jose Vidro’s ...

Who Will The New York Mets Draft?
2008-05-24 17:00:00
From ESPN.com - Blogs - Buster Olney Blog: The Mets, who didn't have a lot of depth in their farm system before they swapped a package of prospects for Johan Santana, have decided internally to focus on drafting college players -- rather than high schoolers -- in the June draft. This will be done in the hope that it will fill the talent gap at the middle and top of their minor leagues. This doesn't sound good. Isn't that what the Toronto Blue Jays for the first several years of the JP Ricciardi regime? And don't the Blue Jays have one of the worst minor league systems in baseball?
The New York Mets OPS Leaders And Other Fantasy Notes
2008-05-08 17:45:00
Who has been the New York Mets' best hitter this season?  Jose Reyes?  No.  David Wright?  Wrong again.  Carlos Beltran?  Keep guessing. Carlos Delgado?  Don't make me laugh.  Ryan Church?  Yup.  He hit his 6th HR last night and leads the regulars with a .328 AVG. (Sadly, the bench, too)  His OBP of .394 also leads the Mets luminaries, and his .541 SLG also paces the team.   On May 7th, the Mets' OPS leader is the player that was laughed at in the Lastings Milledge "heist" that Nationals' GM Jim Bowden pulled off.  (ed:  Wasn't the laughed-at player C Brian Schneider?) Carlos Gomez hit for the cycle and has taken his average to .282.  The XBHs are nice, but who wouldn't have dealt the double and triple for a stolen bases or two?  This is an obvious difference between real baseball and fantasy baseball.  The real baseball fan in me knows Carlos Gomez is a much better player with doubles and tr...

Top Prospects: New York Mets: A Depleted System With Some Remaining Glitter
2008-04-10 10:00:00
(TOP STORY) This last offseason, the New York Mets somehow managed to acquire the most-coveted pitcher in baseball when they captured Johan Santana in exchange for a small boat filled with prospects. What might be an even greater feat, though, is the way they did it without parting with either of their two best young athletes. The cream of the Mets prospect crop remains intact and ready to contribute as the club moves into swanky new digs for 2009. [more...]
Phils/Mets Turning Into REAL Rivalry
2008-04-09 03:23:00
In this day in age, where the media is all around us 24/7, people are always over-hyping players, games, teams and rivalries in an effort to out-scoop the competition and make their stories sound more important and interesting than they really are. As fans, it has become tough to differentiate between the stories where the hype is justified and stories where the hype is more or less imaginary. There is always an "up and coming rivalry" that sportswriters are trying to push on us, most of which have no chance for longevity. See examples here and here. 99% of the time these rivalries never make their way to the upper echelon of Sox/Yanks, Duke/UNC, Michigan/OSU, Dodgers/Giants and so on. These are games where the rivalry is so strong and the teams so consistently good, that it becomes a national event, not just something talked about within certain cities. The Phillies and Mets are nowhere near that point, but they have a chance, and I think it would be great for baseball. Here's wh...
John Smoltz, Mark Teixeira lift Atlanta Braves past New York Mets 3-1 (AP)
2008-04-06 23:26:00
Johan Santana was sharp. The New York Mets just couldn’t do much against John Smoltz and the Braves bullpen. Smoltz pitched five scoreless innings in his season debut and Atlanta beat New York 3-1 on Sunday to complete a two-game sweep of the rain-shortened series. Santana (0-1) gave up only one run in seven innings, ...

Ask the Experts: New York Mets
2008-03-26 11:12:00
Our friends over at RotoProfessor recently had the opportunity to pose five questions to the New York Daily News’ Adam Rubin. The following interview is from their blog, and I'd encourage you to check it out for individual threads about each of the day's events. After struggling down the stretch last season, how do you see Jose Reyes bouncing back?Adam Rubin: I don’t believe there will be any carryover from Reyes’ miserable September to 2008. If you believe the Mets’ assertion, it was simply an ill-timed slump. In case he ran out of gas, the Mets will try to give Reyes a few extra days off this season. And if there was any fraying of the relationship between Willie Randolph and Reyes after he was pulled in Houston before the All-Star break, I’m sure a winter apart and Randolph’s visit to Reyes’ parents’ home in the Dominican Republic a couple of weeks before spring training have smoothed over everything. The top of the Mets rotation appears to be able to stack up w...

Odds & Ends: New York Mets And Clay Buchholz
2008-03-09 21:16:00
In John Perrotto's must-read Sunday column for Baseball Prospectus, Every Given Sunday, he follows-up on some stories that began germinating earlier this week and includes a doozy that will make the Juan Pierre/Nomar Garciaparra over younger & better players debate seem trivial.  Here are a few of the nuggets I found interesting. Amongst the names the Mets are kicking the tires on to replace/build depth following the Mosies Alou injury and Carlos Delgado hip issue are Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge of Detroit, Orioles' teammates Kevin Millar and Jay Payton and Pirates' 1B/OF Xavier Nady.  The Mets have bullpen arms to offer, preferably Scott Schoenweiss or Jorge Sosa.  Fantasy Implication:  If it is Nady, then Steve Pearce lands on every draftboard as a possible 25 HR hitter. Brett Boone is impressing in Nationals' camp to the point of making Ronnie Belliard available in trade.  Fantasy Implication:   Belliard signed a two-year deal.  This...

In my 2008 MLB Predictions post, I picked the New York Mets to beat the Boston Red Sox in the World Series in 2008. The New York Mets Welcome Johan Santana With Open Arms And An Open Bank Vau
2008-02-02 11:52:00
Yesterday, the New York Mets succesfully signed lefty pitcher Johan Santana to a six year deal worth a total of $137.5 million bucks. To say he is locked up would be an utter understatement. I say good for the Mets! They are my favorite National League team, by far. The deal makes Santana the highest paid pitcher in all of baseball and the fourth highest paid PLAYER in the entire big leagues. Ahead of him are Yankees Alex Rodriguez at $275 million and Derek Jeter at $189 million. Rounding out that elite quartet is our very own Manny Ramirez at $160 million. So I must say congratulations to Johan Santana, and to his suddenly richer agent, AND to the Metsies. Santana will be pitching in the National League, so I wish him the very best of everything. With him, the Mets will go a long way, and his aquisition will ease the sudden September departure that every Met fan and team member went through at the end of the '07 season. In Boston Red Sox news, Manny Ramirez spoke to the media in Te...

Off Topic: New York Mets acquire P Johan Santana from Minnesota Twins

In other news, My New York Mets have acquired Two Time Cy Young Winner in Pitcher Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins. The Mets sent over FOUR Prospects in OF Carlos Gomez, P Philip Humber, P Kevin Mulvey, and P Deolis Guerra. The trade is contingent upon the Mets signing Santana to a contract extension, they have a 72 Hour Window in which to sign Johan! This trade was so shocking I couldn't help myself from posting this news on our Bucs Blog, surely there's another Mets-Bucs Fan among us? At any rate, I never publicly bemoaned General Manager Omar Minaya at either of my two favorite NYM's Blogs: MetsBlog.com or AmazinAvenue.com, but I was quietly beginning to question whether he (and the Wilpons) could truly deliver an Ace to the Mets Faithful. I thought Barry Zito from last off-season was the answer, maybe Omar had Johan in mind then and decided to save that 100+ Million Dollar Contract. Smart man. MLB Rumors: Do The Twins Want The New York Mets To Get Johan Santana?
2008-01-11 20:23:00
This morning's New York papers are filled with reaction and rebuttal to Joe Christensen's report yesterday that the Mets are a mere inclusion of Fernando Martinez away from landing Minnesota Twins' starting pitcher Johan Santana.  However, there is also rumblings about what Mr. Christensen's purpose was in reporting the five-prospect offer- to bait the New York Yankees to get back into the bidding. Unfortunately, the moment has Hank Steinbrenner at an ebb in his public excitement over acquiring Johan Santana.  Given his previous behavior with Alex Rodriguez and the Winter Meetings ultimatum about the deadline for Santana, one can only characterize the elder Steinbrenner brother's statements as ebbs and flows. Here are some of the money quotes with bold-facing provided by me. NY Daily News: While the Yanks seem to be out of the race to land Twins ace Johan Santana, the Mets look like front-runners, but a team insider dismissed a report out of Minnesota that the Mets co...
