Who has been the New York Mets' best hitter this season?  Jose Reyes?  No.  David Wright?  Wrong again.  Carlos Beltran?  Keep guessing. Carlos Delgado?  Don't make me laugh.  Ryan Church?  Yup.  He hit his 6th HR last night and leads the regulars with a .328 AVG. (Sadly, the bench, too)  His OBP of .394 also leads the Mets luminaries, and his .541 SLG also paces the team.   On May 7th, the Mets' OPS leader is the player that was laughed at in the Lastings Milledge "heist" that Nationals' GM Jim Bowden pulled off.  (ed:  Wasn't the laughed-at player C Brian Schneider?) In this day in age, where the media is all around us 24/7, people are always over-hyping players, games, teams and rivalries in an effort to out-scoop the competition and make their stories sound more important and interesting than they really are. As fans, it has become tough to differentiate between the stories where the hype is justified and stories where the hype is more or less imaginary. There is always an "up and coming rivalry" that sportswriters are trying to push on us, most of which have no chance for longevity. See examples here and here. 99% of the time these rivalries never make their way to the upper echelon of Sox/Yanks, Duke/UNC, Michigan/OSU, Dodgers/Giants and so on. These are games where the rivalry is so strong and the teams so consistently good, that it becomes a national event, not just something talked about within certain cities. In John Perrotto's must-read Sunday column for Baseball Prospectus, Every Given Sunday, he follows-up on some stories that began germinating earlier this week and includes a doozy that will make the Juan Pierre/Nomar Garciaparra over younger & better players debate seem trivial.  Here are a few of the nuggets I found interesting. Yesterday, the New York Mets succesfully signed lefty pitcher Johan Santana to a six year deal worth a total of $137.5 million bucks. To say he is locked up would be an utter understatement. I say good for the Mets! They are my favorite National League team, by far. The deal makes Santana the highest paid pitcher in all of baseball and the fourth highest paid PLAYER in the entire big leagues. This morning's New York papers are filled with reaction and rebuttal to Joe Christensen's report yesterday that the Mets are a mere inclusion of Fernando Martinez away from landing Minnesota Twins' starting pitcher Johan Santana.  However, there is also rumblings about what Mr. Christensen's purpose was in reporting the five-prospect offer- to bait the New York Yankees to get back into the bidding. Unfortunately, the moment has Hank Steinbrenner at an ebb in his public excitement over acquiring Johan Santana.  Given his previous behavior with Alex Rodriguez and the Winter Meetings ultimatum about the deadline for Santana, one can only characterize the elder Steinbrenner brother's statements as ebbs and flows.
