Highlights from BaseballAmerica.com: John Manuel Chat: New York Yankees Top
2012-01-06 21:11:00 BaseballAmerica.com: Prospects: New York Yankees Top 10 Kyle (St Louis): How many of your top 10 do you believe are worthy of making the top overall 100? John Manuel: I'm thinking the top five players, from Montero to Mason Williams, all make it. I thought I had four in my personal top 50 but double-checked and realize I left Gary Sanchez out of the top 50 this year, after running him way up last year. Big bat, lots of maturing yet to do. Kelly (St Cloud, MN): In last year's scouting report of Betances, you mentioned the possibility of him becoming a RP. Is this still a good possibility, or are the Yanks set on him starting? John Manuel: They seem to still want him to start. He'll never have refined command, and the bigger worry is that his 2010 season looks like the aberration. He had about 2.5 BB per 9 in '10 and was back around 5 per 9 in 2011, like he had been previously. I mentioned AJ Burnett in his writeup, not as a comp but as a simil...

World Series fans! Step back to October 8, 1956 and Don Larsen's 'Perfect'
2010-10-28 02:46:00 Yogi Berra leaps into the arms of perfect game World Series pitcher Don Larsen on October 8, 1956, image by wallyg via FlickrBy BOB ANDELMAN (email) Lew Paper had to be wondering if it was a good thing or a bad thing ? for him ? when, a few weeks ago, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay threw the first no-hitter in post-season competition in 54 years against the hapless Cincinnati Reds. --------------Listen to my LEW PAPER interview!-------------- After all, Paper had just launched his new book, Perfect: Don Larsen?s Miraculous World Series Game and the Men Who Made It Happen, and Halladay?s achievement could have potentially taken away from or added to the lustre of what the little-known Yankees pitcher accomplished back in 1956 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. For my money, I think Halladay ? who has been a consistently awesome pitcher throughout his career ? only served to remind us what a gem a no-hitter is and how rare getting one in the post-season really is. Peter Golenbock may write Yankees histories, but he's rooting for the Rays
2010-04-12 22:25:00 Mickey Mantle, image via Wikipedia By BOB ANDELMAN Sportswriter Peter Golenbock is one of my heroes, a guy I want to be like in many ways when I grow up. For now, however, I?ll settle for just being to call him a friend. The major characteristic I admire about Peter is his ability to be working constantly. He?s always writing a new book, always engaged in an envious research project. Actually, more than one. As a guy who also makes his living writing books, it drives me nuts. Let me give you an example. The first time Peter was on my show, he was promoting his hotly controversial first stab at fiction, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel. But while he was setting the New York media community on fire with wild tales of the Mick getting up to bat with Joe D?s gal, Marilyn Monroe, he was already hot at work with actor Tony Curtis on his autobiography and on a history of Brooklyn. When I had him back to talk about those books, he was chomping at the bit to talk about his George Steinb...

Stop Hating The New York Yankees: Owners Included...
2010-04-07 19:19:00 The Evil Empire has a new man on its radar to seek out and destroy. Of all the criticisms in baseball the one that gets old the fastest is whining about how much money the New York Yankees spend on their team. Once again the pinstripes lead major league baseball this year with a $206.3 million dollar payroll which is 2% higher than what they spent last season eventually winning the World Series for the first time since 2000. It's almost human nature to hate the team that continues to win all the time and have the best teams because of our envious nature when it comes to sports. Fans are allowed to think that way, but owners of baseball...

Game #13...Boston Red Sox 7 New York Yankees 3...KOTSAY TO BOSTON (?)
2008-08-27 11:29:00 Tuesday was an all-around great day for the Boston Red Sox. In their last ever series at Yankee Stadium (barring a miracle), they defeated the New York Yankees by a score of 7-3, Toronto beat up on the first place Rays and the club found out that Josh Beckett will be able to return to the rotation on Friday evening. The Sox crept to within 3 1/2 games of those Rays and have a full three game wild card lead over the Twins and a 6 game lead over the pinstripers. That's a lot of reasons to be happy, but there's one more--a big one. Boston just might be playing their best baseball of the year at the most important time of this long season. That's just terrific! And keep reading to learn about the latest possible Red Sox acquisition, ANOTHER piece of great news.Tim Wakefield returned to the mound after an injury "time out" and was able to go five full innings, throwing 80 pitches while giving up just 3 runs on 8 hits. He walked one and struck out one and said this after his outing......

Sports subsidies: A New York Yankees Case Study
2008-05-28 00:00:00 David Kay Johnston, in his new book, "Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (and Stick You with the Bill)," talks about the extent that tax-payer subsidies support Major League sports in this country, with particular attention to the new Yankees stadium being built in The Bronx. In a recent interview with Amy Goodman at Democracy Now!, he pointed out, Now, in this country right now, we are spending $2 billion a year subsidizing the big four sports: baseball, basketball, football and hockey. It accounts for all of the profits of that industry and more. Now, there may be individual teams that make money, but the industry as a whole is not profitable. And that's astonishing because the big four leagues are exempt from the laws of competition. By the way, irony is not dead, because here are people who are in the business of competition on the field who are exempted by law from the rules of economic competition. 2008-05-27 04:31:00 After a 5-game skid, the Orioles thanks to the brilliant pitching of Garrett Olson, Aubrey Huff?s three-run homer in seventh, along with Nick Markakis going 3-for-4 and breaking out a slump with a solo homer in the sixth, Baltimore beat the New York Yankees, 6-1. The woeful New York bullpen opened the game for Baltimore and wasted a great effort by youngster Darrell Rasner. The story of the game besides Olson?s performance was Nick Markakis finally coming out of a deep slump. Baltimore?s number three hitter came through big on Memorial and he knows better than anyone that he needs to hit in order for the Orioles to win. As well, he was marvelous in the field as he gunned down Johnny Damon at home in the third inning thanks to a laser throw. I think that play embolden the Orioles, gave Olson even more confidence and showed the Yankees, despite everything, they?ll be hard to beat unlike in past seasons.Despite having A-Rod in the lineup, the Bronx Bombers were limp and the Orioles took...

New York Yankees Vs Cleveland Indians And Other Fantasy Notes
2008-04-29 00:40:00 Watching yesterday's Yankees/Indians game, I couldn't help notice how every bit of doubt about the health of Indians' starter C.C. Sabathia disappeared. Is there anyone out there who isn't positively stating that he or she knew he wasn't hurt? For the Yankees, Chien-Ming Wang won his 5th game in atypical fashion. He had more Ks (9) and flyouts (6) than groundouts (5). He now has 27 Ks in 35 innings of work. I'm on record stating he is going to try to K more hitters because the Yankees' brass threw his lack of Ks in his face during his arbitration hearing. The one run in this game scored on a Melky Cabrera HR, his 5th of the season. Given the Melkman only delivered 8 HRs all last season (545 ABs), does this represent just the beginning of a breakout power year for the twenty-three-year-old CF? Finally, I have to comment on the play-by-play that occurred. In the top of the 6th inning, Derek Jeter lead-off with a double. Up next was the ...
