I guess the Truth Doesn't SELL! Newspapers really think their readers can'
2008-08-02 19:06:00
It amazes me at times the lengths some newspapers will go for the all mighty buck! Episcopal Life was reporting about a day at their Lambeth Conference. They were talking that day about the Violence Against Women, and the silence of domestic violence within the church. The popular press in England decides that we need to take portions of what Bishop Catherine Roskam said at the conference with a nasty little twist. I guess the truth doesn't sell enough newspapers or something. Its pretty sick! They are attempting to say she mentioned that pastors beat their wifes in certain parts of the world, because its morally acceptable there. YEAH! Okay then! They must be deaf and their reading skills must certainly be lacking. I wonder if their supervisors are aware! It makes their newspapers look bad that's for sure!Over at Simple Massing Priest, and Blogging Regiliously are just two places of many that seem outraged at the lies that the newspapers are trying to convey! Here is th...
Sf Chronicle Losing $1 Million A Week - Newspapers In Trouble
2008-06-23 08:28:00
According to today's NY Times, the newspaper industry is in trouble, as papers suffer from competition from the Internet. The SF Chron has been losing $1 million a week since last year. As Time O'Reily wrote last year, he reads the online version of the SF Chron 95 percent of the time, and the "offline" version about 5 percent of the time. That's probably true for me, as well, but Tim and I are both in the Internet business. What can be done? Well, my answer is "nothing" -- the offline news people have to adjust to this New Media world, as do institutions and PR people who have been oriented toward using offline newspapers to get the news out. This also includes sports leagues like the NFL, which has a long standing relationship with such organizations as The Associated Press, but not the Huffington Post, which draws 14 million visitors a month. The SF Chron seems to be trying to find its way on The Internet, where it gets about 5 million visitors per month. That's still f...
Newspapers run ads about fake airline Derrie-Air
2008-06-10 13:05:00
Derrie-Air has been exposed. Readers of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News opened their papers Friday to see ads for a new airline called Derrie-Air, which purportedly charges passengers by the pound. But the new carrier will never get off the ground. It’s a one-day advertising campaign about a fake airline by Philadelphia Media Holdings, the papers’ owner, and Gyro ad agency.

Qatar Newspapers: Which is the best?
2008-05-31 21:16:00
I have subscribed to the Gulf Times for some time, and I chose it because, although I often prefer the Peninsula?s style of writing (which is a bit more spiky), I have generally found that the Gulf Times has better coverage of Qatar stories. However recently I have noticed Qatar stories popping up in the Peninsula (through my Google alerts for Qatar, which pick up stories from both newspapers) which I haven?t noticed in the Gulf Times. I also have friends who prefer the new paper on the block, The Qatar Tribune, citing its coverage of international issues. It seemed like a good time for a comparison, so on Friday I purchased and read all three newspapers.I started on the front page, and quickly noticed that both the Tribune and the Peninsula carried the story of the Kahramaa?s network expansion plans. With a planned QAR 10.2 billion of contracts, this could be considered important, from a financial view at least. However, the Gulf Times relegated to this the third page, replacing it ...

A student has designed the most eco-friendly chair ever made out of newspapers. Is there anything special about online newspapers?

No Easy Answers in Lebanon
2008-05-20 14:24:00
Whether Lebanon veered close to “civil war” this month?a question broached by many newspapers?seems purely academic at this point, and perhaps irrelevant. Beirut settled into a tenuous calm after Lebanon’s cabinet conceded (CNN) the immediate demands of Hezbollah, but the upheaval resolved none of the many issues destabilizing the country. Lebanon’s paralyzed government, Beirut’s inability ...

Legendary Wash Post Watergate icon Bob Woodward's taking the buyout. But how much will he get? The 65-year-old reporter took a voluntary pay cut to ten grand in 2006. How trust helps kill newspapers?

I don’t often get HTML envy, but Roger Black has a damn fine looking blog. And he has a few thoughts on one of my favourite current themes - trust. Not enough NYT journos are drinking the Kool-Aid. So to persuade the reluctant, this media leak: "The New York Times' news room is bracing for a bloodbath in the next 10 days. The word from inside is that approximately 50 unionized journalists have accepted the buyout proposal, and only another 20 non-union editorial employees have gotten on board. That means the ax could fall on as many as 30 editorial people in the company's first-ever mass firing of journalists in its 156-year history." Keith J. Kelly NYP

The decline of newspapers - nothing to do with journalism 3
2008-04-20 01:05:00
More grist to the mill from one of my favourite reads, John Robinson. Here is Robinson, (who edits the News-Record in Greensboro, North Carolina) explaining why he missed a retired editor speaking about the good old days and proposing another old-fashioned remedy for the news industry’s ills: Doubling the size of reporting staffs would certainly serve the community. The more journalists reporting the good, the bad and the ugly, the better. But those are the effects of problems facing newspapers not the cause. While good journalism has not changed markedly since the 1990s, technology has.So has the audience. So have people’s habits. Not addressing those changes in discussions about journalism and newspapers is like talking about television as if there were still only three channels. Those changes: the economic distress faced by traditional newspaper advertisers such as department storesthe loss of classified revenuesthe splintering of the attentions and interests of the audiencethe...

Learning from Newspapers
2008-04-17 22:08:00
If you are a blogger there are a lot of things which you can learn from newspapers. When it comes to newspapers, usually space is premium. This means that an 100 word article with the same information as an article with 500 words is a lot more preferable. Too often bloggers forget about this important rule and try to write posts which are simply too long. We live in times when people value their time, because there are hundred things to do that you can choose from. When you write articles make sure that they are short and concise. In my case I always try to present some advice or information in my posts and I make them short enough that people can read them in a minute. Personally I am really bored by blogs which posts are too long, because I am usually visiting blogs to acquire some information, not to fill up my time.

Editor & Publisher to Daily Newspapers: Drop Dead
2008-04-02 16:03:00
"I feel a bit guilty about this. After all, I write for and offer advice to newspapers on an industry website. I support the newspaper industry and hope that it can come through the current downturn and learn to thrive in the new media world. So, wouldn't I want to support it by continuing to pay for printed newspapers to land on my driveway each morning, as a sign of solidarity with the industry? After all, print revenues are keeping the industry afloat, since online revenues can't yet match print's. Umm, no, actually."-- Steve Outing, "Stop the Presses" online columnist for Editor & Publisher, explaining why he cancelled his subscription to his local newspaper, the Boulder Daily Camera. (For the record, Mr. Media still gets two daily newspapers delivered to his driveway everyday, the St. Petersburg Times and The New York Times. That's not to say the handwriting isn't on the wall, but we're not ready to look at it that closely yet.)

Nehru's newspapers Qaumi Awaz, National Herald shut down in Congress regime
2008-04-01 22:47:00
On April 1, Qaumi Awaz, the Urdu daily from national capital, New Delhi, which was founded by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, brought out its last copy. The masthead, the photo of which is shown on the top left, will be remembered for a long time. Till its last day of publication, the words :"Baani: Jawaharlal Nehru" (encircled in red for those who can't read Urdu)", were printed in the same manner.National Herald has also closed down. The papers were earlier published from Lucknow and nearly a decade back, the Lucknow edition was closed Pandit Nehru, the great visionary, and founder of modern India, had established these papers.Ironically, the newspapers closed despite all possible resistance and the fact that Qaumi Awaz still used to sell and had a good circulation though there was no money. And it all happened when Congress-led UPA is in the office and Sonia Gandhi's intervention would have saved the papers. The English daily could also have been revived (Qaumi Awa...

The death and life of newspapers

Booting the boys off the bus: Coverage costly, newspapers whine
2008-03-30 19:05:00
Timothy Crouse’s book gave us the overused phrase “boys on the bus.” Now, it seems, the boys (and girls) are being yanked off the bus in droves. Fewer and fewer reporters for the nation’s major dailies are riding the campaign bus and flying on the press plane to regularly cover the remnants of the pre-convention presidential race. That bodes poorly for both the survival of the print press and the level of political knowledge of the electorate the print press decreasingly serves. Jacques Steinberg of The New York Times reports that 650 journalists parachuted into Cleveland, Ohio, in February to cover the debate between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. “But,” Mr. Steinberg writes, “early the next morning, as the two candidates set off for engagements across Ohio and Texas, representatives of only two dozen or so news organizations tagged along.” [emphasis added]. Newspaper managers say they have reasons for pulling the boys off t...
Real Estate blogs are stores, not newspapers - so blog like you are selling
2008-03-28 21:52:00
Would you replace the listings in your real estate office's front window with the town's event calendar, restaurant reviews and local business profile? No. So why would you do that on your blog? I'm going to say this up front, so there is no misunderstanding. The entire point of this post is to get you to understand that if your business is about real estate and you want to attract customers that have a real estate need you MUST write about real estate not skateboards and restaurants. Why? Because a home is not a whim purchase, it is typically a well planned decision. There are very few of us that pass by the local real estate office and say, "hey honey, I know we set out to buy a skateboard for Timmy, but let's buy a house instead, this store has pretty ones." Therefore, it is inconceivable to me that by driving people into your blog with an article about local skate parks, you will snag a home buyer. Seriously, find me one person that ever set out in the morning to ...
Writing for Magazines and Newspapers

To find a way to write for my food. By any means necessary. But I have found that to do so means working long hours for a pittance, and struggling for my nickels and dimes. I almost feel like a beggar. But I have been publishing in small-time magazines, and getting paid small-time money. I do not complain, for at least it is something. I am rather pleased with myself, in fact. My mom is happy with me too. I do not mind slaving away for a few days researching, interviewing, and assembling a story that will only make me $50. I am actually very happy to receive the $50 for this effort. I think that I am well paid. I am satisfied. I am having fun. I do not need anything more. But maybe I am coming to the point where I need to take things to the next level. Maybe I should try getting published ...
