News: Sandinista priest presides UN General Assembly
2008-06-07 20:43:00 Former Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann is elected president of the U.N. General Assembly. His bio is more interesting than merely "being a US born Roman Catholic priest".He backed the revolution in Nicaragua, joining Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega's government as foreign minister, a period sprouting fierce US under cover opposition in the so-called "contra-revolution".D'Escoto's- anti-American past includes successfully taking the US to the International Court of Justice in the Hague for arming Contra rebels and staging a hunger strike against U.S. policy. In 2004 he told a U.S. news program former President Ronald Reagan was "the butcher of my people" and called President George W. Bush Reagan's "spiritual heir". (Full)In his acceptance speech, he said "(..)love is what is most needed in this world. Selfishness is what has gotten us into the terrible quagmire in which the world is sinking, almost irreversibly, unless something big happens."d'Escoto spoke ...

Is Chavez Looking to Start a War?
2008-03-03 19:22:00 It is the nature of socialist countries to try to expand and attack their neighbors. North Vietnam took South Vietnam. China took Tibet. The Soviet Union took everything it could. So it makes me wonder if Chavez isn’t looking for a reason to invade Colombia. He certainly has been building up his military for some reason, and now has taken to open threats against his neighbors: “This could be the start of a war in South America,” Chavez said. He warned Colombian president Alvaro Uribe: “If it occurs to you to do this in Venezuela, President Uribe, I’ll send some Sukhois” _ Russian warplanes recently bought by Venezuela. This is no small threat. In the past several years Chavez has spent , according to the Defense Intelligence Agency, $4.3 billion in weapons in 2005-2006, more even than China. This includes a Kalashnikov assault rifle (AK-47) factory licensed from Russia. For a nation not at war, this is hardly an auspicious sign. This is the al...
Nicaragua North of Managua
2008-03-02 01:37:00 Nicaragua North of ManaguaOld women with heads wrapped in bright colored scarfs smile toothless smiles from the backs of pickup trucks. Another woman who is all wrinkles from stem to stern tries to sell me fried goods from the window of my bus. I am riding through the Northern Nicaraguan countryside and the morning sun is just coming up over the eastern hills. Going to the Honduran border. A man who is more beard than man tries to flag down the bus from the side of the road. The driver leaves both him and his flowing white belly length beard in the dust. The big white clouds whisper their approval as they know that the bearded man will just find a seat on another bus, and for us, well, we will just keep rolling on. Chickens cackle and children play. The day is just beginning. Honduras is on the horizon and ruins of Copan await excavating. I am not too sure how this project at Copan is going to go. There may be large restrictions on what I can write and photograph. I need to be able ...

Going to Nicaragua
2008-02-11 23:53:00 Going to NicaraguaI am standing on the verge of leaving another country. I am happy. I am very ready to leave Costa Rica. The Nicaraguans are dangerous I was told so many times here that I figure I may as well go to Nicaragua.I also have work there. I really like having projects to do while traveling. I think it makes my life seem a little more regular, although I know it is a life less normal. I think that my mind is over active, I need projects to channel this over activity or else I would end up in the middle of Antarctica. If I did not have projects, I know that I would be lost somewhere in Antarctica. This website venture has been the biggest project that I have undertaken since the collecting of hockey cards when I was young. All day long I would sort, organize, and check the values of my hockey cards just to come up with some new organizational scheme and do it all over again the next day.I think Vagabond Journey.com is very similar to my hockey card collection. Mira looked a...

Archaeology Fieldwork in Nicaragua and Copan
2008-02-06 18:01:00 Archaeology Fieldwork in Nicaragua and CopanBy living, I call myself a traveler, by aspiration, a writer, but by trade, I always refer to myself as an archaeologist. I learned the profession on the Manabi Coast of Ecuador in 2000, and I have been doing professional fieldwork whenever I needed to make up a little bean money ever since. It is a real traveler’s profession, as it is difficult, no impossible!, to find work that keeps you sedentary. Travel is the muse of all archaeologists. This is the main quality about the profession that I love: I can sign on to a job, travel to the site, work for a month or so, and then travel on with money in my pocket. It is fun outdoor work, keeps me traveling, and generally only requires short commitments. Archaeologists also tend to be rather odd, solitary, misanthropes. I fit in well in this profession. Well, I decided to come back to Latin America and try my hand at some Meso-American archaeology. A project with a grad student from the Univer...

Nicaragua
2008-01-21 03:58:00 Location : The Carribs - 13 57 N, 079 40 WI know I say this about every place, But Nicaragua is a beautiful country. I think once I get back home I should lay down strict guidelines on rating beauty. But the above scene was just sitting on the balcony of my deck. There are not too many peoplein Nicaragua and the reason might be the presence of 27 active Volcanos on the pacific coast. This is one of them and the fact that it was spewing out smoke throughout the stay of the ship was not very comforting to me. I've heard people actually pay money to get near places like this. Its a good thing I got my Pay raise last year!

The Cathedrals of Granada, Nicaragua
2008-01-04 18:06:00 The San Francisco Convent Cathedral complex in Granada, Nicaragua is another example of Nicaraguan ingenuity. The buildings cover a square block and consist of the old convent that is now a museum, and the old and new cathedral.I went to a wedding in the cathedral last week. Fairy tale stuff with huge ceilings and ornate works of art. That's besides the plexiglass covered skeletons of some bygone church people that are on either side of the altar. I'll leave the tongue in cheek jokes up to the reader. The place is so huge, bats have made it a permanent cave, and no one seems to mind in the least when they swoop through various religious ceremonies looking for a bug snack. Certainly makes sitting through some of the longer ceremonies an enjoyable study in animal behavior.San Francisco Cathedral is unique in that it has a main entrance facade and a smaller rebuilt cathedral behind that. And here is where San Francisco becomes one of my favorite Cathedrals in Granada. The rumor ...

The Cathedrals of Granada, Nicaragua
2007-12-30 19:09:00 La Merced Catherdral in Granada, Nicaragua boasts a pretty kewl bell tower with a sweeping view of the old colonial buildings of Granada and Lake Nicaragua in the background. On a clear day you can see Ometepe Island. So far I haven't seen a day that wasn't clear. The climb to the almost-top of the bell tower is fun. A spiral staircase with steps fit for tiny childlike feet, winds its way upward, enclosed in thick white adobe walls. You can almost imagine the people of days gone by climbing their way up there for the views or the breeze. I don't think you can sit up there contemplating life when the bells are rung. Make the fillings in your head rattle around for a bit I bet.As usual, I can't find a lot written on La Merced Cathedral. Like many of her sister cathedrals here in Granada, she was almost destroyed in civil wars, been rebuilt, and is still a work in progress. She is impressive for her size and views of the city and surrounding countryside. And who can pass up...
