Mission Semi-Accomplished
2008-04-12 19:57:00 The Nick Lowe concert at the El Rey in Los Angeles was fantastic, of course, culminating in such a beautiful and sincere rendition of "(What's So Funny) 'Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding" that it actually made me weep.I didn't meet Nick Lowe, but I did meet Loudon Wainwright III! Loudon, another musician that I greatly admire and that I've seen in concert a couple times, was just hanging out in the audience. I, of course, spent two hours figuring out my approach tactics (Prince Gomolvilas, cautious minor-celebrity stalker). After a strange performance by opening act Robyn Hitchcock (who delivered long, rambling, bizarre, and sometimes hilarious monologues and who was prone to stopping in the middle of a song and wandering off stage to find the lyrics), I marched up to Loudon:PRINCE: Are you Loudon Wainwright III?LOUDON: Yes.PRINCE: I'm a huge fan of your music.LOUDON: Oh, thank you.PRINCE: I also recently finished watching all of Undeclared on DVD, and you were hilaaaaaaaaaar...

Nick Lowe - At My Age: Country Rock at Its Best
2008-01-31 10:45:00 I got a chance to get almost all Nick Lowe albums as well as his Basher: Greatest Hits and his latest “At My Age”. But this very amalgamation of confessional, rock ‘n roll, country rock tunes is pleasant to hear from even a juvenile point of view like me. “At My Age” is capable of being covered as Lowe’s best solo album. It starts out with a self esteem breaker ballad with a Sinatra-ish “My Way” condiment “Better Man” and dives into country rock “Long Limbed Girl”. The lyrics are regretful and a bit confessional and you can feel an old man talking about his life in a very honest way. Contains three covers: “A Man In Love”, “Not Too Long Ago” which appeared in my 2007 playlist earlier in December 2007 and “Feel Again”. This album should have been nominated for a rock grammy and I really feel sorry for them. Unlike other Nick Lowe albums, the songs don’t seem to sink down when their track numbers increase. In fact, it gets better by time. The mix ...

Nick Lowe - I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass (1978)
2008-01-07 08:30:00 As the leader of the seminal pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz, a producer, and a solo artist, Nick Lowe held considerable influence over the development of punk rock. With the Brinsleys, Lowe began a back-to-basics movement that flowered into punk rock in the late '70s. As the house producer for Stiff, he recorded many seminal records by the likes of the Damned, Elvis Costello, and the Pretenders.... [Please Visit the blog for the full post...]
11/17/07 - Life Journal - Gotta be Cruel to be Kind
2007-11-19 22:19:00 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting.2 Corinthians 7:9This thought is tossin and turning in Pauls head. ....I'm sorry I grieved you but I don't regret it but I do regret it but only for a little while did I regret it.......Got it?It's hard to be truthful, to discipline, to point out short comings. Sometimes you just have to clench your fists and be blunt. It probably will hurt some people's feelings, but if it is done out of love and a true desire for the betterment of the person it HAS to be done. Through their grieving, or more likely being ticked off at you, they might just take a look in the mirror and recognize what they couldn't. Anyone that is a parent knows exactly what this is all about. It's not an question of if, but when is your child you love so much going to run off into their room screaming that they hate you at the top of their lungs. It hurts! But I guarantee you this, if your kids aren't getting upset...

When Sarcasm Turns Into Sincerity
2007-10-03 09:22:00 Before I start writing a single word of a script or embarking on a new project, I always give it a title, and I'm always thoroughly pleased with the titles I come up with. Big Hunk o' Burnin' Love, Jukebox Stories, Emophiliacs?they're catchy, they're resonant, and they ooze with meaning. So it's a special occasion when I forgo an original title and instead name a script after a song. This has happened twice. All Men Are Liars is one of my first plays, which won me my first playwriting award ever, and Drive-Thru Man is a screenplay I wrote a few years ago. Both titles were taken from Nick Lowe songs. That's what I wanted to tell Nick tonight after his exquisite performance at Safari Sam's in Hollywood, but the bouncer, who was unsympathetic to fandom, wouldn't let me backstage. Instead, I had to bask in the afterglow of a truly splendid evening.Nick Lowe is a badass. At 58, he tore though a 21-song acoustic set that spanned his 30-year career; he eschewed a guitar pick in fav...

Nick Lowe Gets Terry Gross All Hot and Bothered
2007-08-25 09:17:00 Several weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly published a terrific interview with Nick Lowe, whose new At My Age album is surely winning him a legion of new fans, due to its irresistible hooks and inviting sound. I haven't been able to find the article online until now because the EW site's search engine sucks. After you're done with that article, listen to Terry Gross's Fresh Air podcast with Nick Lowe (also available for free on iTunes), who chats and plays some songs from his new album. (Thanks for calling me about this, Donovan!) Aside from being an entertaining talk and performance, it's amusing to hear Terry seem to get all hot and bothered by Mr. Lowe. She showers him with compliments and fawns over him like a tween at a High School Musical ice show. It's really cute when smart people exhibit lust. Then, go to his website to check out tour dates. I'm seeing him at Safari Sam's in Los Angeles on October 2, 2007, so you should come with. He's playing elsewhere as well, and it ...

Nick Lowe - At My Age
2007-05-20 18:54:00 Review: The British icon Nick Lowe returns with his new plush record, his first album in nearly six years. And again At My Age's bringing back the tradition of three-minute pop singles, they sound as Lowe, of course, his skill on music follows a melodic country-rock, adult pop record. Its amazing atmosphere that goes perfectly on rainy days is the best side of "At My Age". People Change, Hope

Nick Lowe - At My Age

Nick Lowe - Jesus Of Cool
