Cigarette Companies Hook Teens On Nicotine
2008-04-15 02:35:00
The author of 13 books including most recently The Human Odyssey: Navigating the Twelve Stages of Life, Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D., has spent his life writing and speaking about human development, with a particular focus on children. He has appeared on The Today Show, CBS This Morning, CNN, and has presented more than 800 keynotes, workshops, and seminars in 42 states and 16 countries. Guest Blogger Thomas Armstrong-- A new report from the Massachusetts Department of Health says that the amount of nicotine in most cigarettes rose an average of 10% between 1998 and 2004, and that the cigarettes with the greatest increases in nicotine include brands that are the most popular with teenagers:  Marlboro, Newport, and Camel.  So while the public personna of cigarette manufacturers like Phillip Morris has them warning young people of the dangers of smoking in media advertisements (see, for example, their home page on the web which is strewn with proactive health messages), behi...

Marijuana Withdrawal Rivals Nicotine
2008-03-05 19:57:00
Kicking pot or cigarettes leads to anxiety, sleep problems.A small study in the journal Alcohol and Drug Dependence likened withdrawal from cannabis to that of withdrawal from nicotine, in the case of smokers addicted to either or both substances. The study gave further support to the growing body of evidence supporting the existence of a clinically significant marijuana withdrawal syndrome in heavy marijuana smokers. As one cigarette smoker in withdrawal famously put it, ?I cannot think, cannot concentrate, cannot remember.? Now it appears that heavy marijuana smokers who go cold turkey might be susceptible to the same symptoms of withdrawal from addiction.Dr. Ryan Vandrey, a professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and principle author of the study, told Amy Norton of Reuters Health that marijuana withdrawal can cause symptoms similar to nicotine withdrawal, such as anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and sleep problems. Marijuana withdrawal, which...

Damian O'Hara is a former chain smoker who after countless miserable attempts to quit, finally did so successfully using Allen Carr's Easyway method. The early part of his career was spent working at international advertising agencies but today he is the President of Allen Carr North America where he heads up the US and Canadian arm of a global organization dedicated to helping smokers quit. Over the past 25 years Allen Carr's Easyway books and seminars have helped an estimated 10 million smokers quit successfully.  Here Mr. O'Hara has penned a response to Do You Smoke To Diet? Guest Blogger Damian O'Hara:The issue of smoking and weight control is not as simple as you might think. There are two myths we need to deal with here: first, the idea that smoking helps control weight, either as an appetite suppressant or as an agent to boost the metabolism and second, that quitting smoking leads to weight gain. Many smokers claim that the cigarette wor...

Smoker Bell Keeps Nicotine Addicts Happy...but It Doesn't Go Far Enough
2008-01-11 12:07:00
Are you Smoker??Florian Brillet - Paris architect-  made this unique design. it's enough to smoke two people. if you want feel the nicotine fully, USE this.. :)Instead of treating smokers like outcasts, Paris architect Florian Brillet is embracing them with a new design that is intended to keep them comfortable while enjoying a smoke outdoors. The Smoker Bell is a helmet-like covering that includes a drink stand and an articulated arm that can be attached to the exterior of buildings. Plus, it is big enough to accommodate two people as they slowly kill themselves with nicotine and caffeine. From : http://gizmodo.com/343581/smoke-r-bell-keeps-nicotine-addicts-h-appybut-it-doesnt-go-far-enough- My viewpoint on this concept piece is that it doesn't go far enough in its quest to help smokers deal with the endless restrictions society has been placing on them. What they need to do is bring the device indoors and completely enclose the helmet covering. That way, smokers wouldn't have ...

Nicotine Vaccine Doubles Quit Rate in Human Trials
2007-11-08 20:54:00
NicVax still showing promise against cigarette addictionNabi Biopharmaceutical announced this week that an experimental vaccine it has been testing against nicotine addiction had shown itself to be effective in human trials. Volunteers were more than twice as likely to quit, compared to a control group whose members were injected with a placebo. The company-funded study gave volunteers five injections of NicVax, Nabi?s proprietary drug, or else a placebo. In regulatory filings, the company claims that the vaccine triggers an antibody response, which prevents nicotine molecules from reaching the brain. The antibodies bind with the nicotine molecules, making nicotine too large to cross the exceedingly fine blood-brain barrier of the brain. Roughly 15 per cent of smokers who received injections of NicVax were nicotine-free after one year. For comparison, early studies of Chantix as an anti-smoking medication show a quit response rate in the range of 20 per cent for heavy smokers. Studie...

Teenagers who smoke are five times more likely to drink and 13 times more likely to use marijuana than those who are not smokers, says a US report issued today. The report by Columbia University's National Centre on Addiction and Substance Abuse presented further evidence linking youth smoking to other substance abuse and spotlighted research on how nicotine affects the adolescent brain."Teenage smoking can signal the fire of alcohol and drug abuse or mental illness like depression and anxiety," Joseph Califano, who heads the centre and is a former US health secretary, said in a telephone interview. The report analysed surveys conducted by the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and other data on youth smokers. Most smokers begin smoking before age 18.Smokers aged 12 to 17 were more likely drink alcohol than nonsmokers - 59 per cent compared to 11 per cent, the report found. Low Cost Term Life Insurance For Smokers And Nicotine Users
2007-08-22 07:17:00
If you are smoker or regular tobacco user, you know how difficult it can be trying to purchase term life insurance. The high term life insurance premiums quoted to you simply because you smoke have probably been disappointing. Since the insurance industry is always trying to accommodate "specialty" niches, some term life insurance companies have recently opted to offer low cost term life insurance for smokers and tobacco users. As a smoker or nicotine user, you are now eligible for 10, 15, 20 or 30 year term periods at less expensive rates. As long as you are otherwise in excellent health and are at a reasonable weight, you may purchase $250,000.00 worth of coverage for about $40 per month over a 10 year period.Finding the Right Term Life Insurance CompanyAside from the fact that tobacco use in any form already sets you apart from non-users, it is important to understand that many insurance companies do not even distinguish between the form and frequency of your tobacco use. Next Safety developing nicotine-delivery device to curb smoking
2007-08-15 09:50:00
Nah, Next Safety's approach to curbing smoking isn't nearly as fun as puffing on Golden Dragon's Ruyan e-cigarettes, but it just might do the trick. Reportedly, this North Carolina-based startup plans to bring a 'nicotine-delivery product' to market which would actually 'deliver nicotine to the brain faster and safer than cigarettes,' all while protecting children and nonsmokers from secondhand smoke. Interestingly, the pulmonary drug-deliverer (which works similarly to a medical inhaler) is said to provide 'a stronger kick' than smoking, but actually administers a smaller amount of nicotine to the body than your average Marlboro. Currently, the firm is hoping to release it into less restricted overseas markets by the year's end, but analysts here in America are questioning its ability to pass through all the red tape required for it to hit our shelves.(Via Engadget.)

Nicotine fit!!!
2007-08-01 22:07:00
So today marks the beginning of an entirely smoke-free campus here at UNM, and let's just say that ariadneK is having a slightly rough time of it, to put it mildly. ;-) I'm doing fairly well actually, though I did take a brief walk off-campus (which was fairly relaxing in and of itself) about half an hour ago to relieve some of my anxiety and indulge in lighting up.Aside from the nicotine bullshit, I'm starting to feel a bit better than I did last week, so hopefully I will indeed start posting on a more regular basis once again. With regard to the position that I interviewed for awhile back (a few weeks ago now, I think?) that I REALLY want, I haven't heard anything back on it...so damn! I guess things aren't so promising after all, but I'm still keeping my fingers tightly crossed and hoping for the best.Anyway, perhaps more later...ariK

Nicotine TestingPre-employment health evaluations for Cleveland Clinic job applicants now include Nicotine testing, in addition to the existing health and wellness screenings. The testing for Cotinine, a nicotine metabolite, is being incorporated as part of Cleveland Clinic's efforts to make the institution a healthy place to work and visit."As a leading healthcare organization dedicated to fighting disease and advocating healthy living, our policies and procedures must reflect that commitment," said Delos M. "Toby" Cosgrove, M.D. CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic. "Having banned smoking from our campuses and launched a communitywide program to promote smoking cessation, incorporating Cotinine testing is a natural extension of our efforts to highlight the perils of tobacco use."An incremental rollout of the new policy, lasting through Sept. 1, will allow job applicants who test positive for Cotinine access to free, smoking cessation services. What is nicotine addiction?
2007-05-16 10:35:00
Nicotine is the tobacco plant's natural protection from being eaten by insects. Drop for drop it's more lethal than strychnine and three times deadlier than arsenic. Yet, amazingly, by chance, this natural insecticide's chemical structure is so similar to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine that once inside the brain it fits a host of chemical locks permitting it direct and indirect control over the flow of more than 200 neurochemicals. Within eight seconds of that first-ever inhaled puff, through dizzy, coughing and six shades of green, nicotine arrived at the brain's reward pathways where it generated an unearned flood of dopamine, resulting in an immediate yet possibly unrecognized "aaahhh" reward sensation. Sensing it would cause most first-time inhalers to soon return to steal more. Nicotine also fit the adrenaline locks releasing a host of fight or flight neurochemicals and select serotonin locks impacting mood. Brain Defenses Create Dependency A toxic poison, the ...
