90 Minutes From Shanghai To Paris (Ningbo)
2008-05-09 07:35:00
Well, not quite, but the Shanghai to Ningbo bridge is the world's longest cross-sea span and it cuts the drive from Shanghai to Ningbo from 400 km to 80km. CLB's own Steve Dickinson just returned from Ningbo, having travelled there from Shanghai to meet with a client who is setting up a manufacturing plant there. I asked Steve what he thought of it and here is his response: The bridge was truly amazing. It is not like a bridge. It is like a very long, straight road. Just like the Beijing airport: the impossible, done quickly and well. Query: why can they do these things and then not be able to put the right paint on a toy? There is reason at the bottom of all this, and I think pricing and profit margins play a role. Anyone else been down that bridge yet?
Ningbo Guide: March Edition is Out

The March edition of the Ningbo Guide is out, and has an interesting mix of articles that spans traveling to North Korea, Pole Dancing, the usefulness of JVs, and contract fraud. Additionally, there is a really interesting piece that pits two vendors against eat other in a contest. I would suggest everyone look at this! One ... We are back in Ningbo after traveling for over a month. It is good to be home and blogging. Many things have happened in the past month and as I blog, I am essentially organizing my thoughts. We flew Air Asia X to Hangzhou from Kuala Lumpur. We had been waiting for this route since the announcement end 2006. As the fare was quite reasonable, we decided to splurge and booked the XL seats which is really business class without the frills. There were only 4 of us in that section so it was pretty quiet and there was no queue to use the toilet. I have only 1 complaint. The crew on this particular flight was unusually talkative amongst themselves which was a bit disruptive when we were trying to sleep. Otherwise, the crew was as efficient as can be.We were picked up by car from Hangzhou and the drive back to Ningbo was uneventful. It did save us a lot of time and the hassle of having to take the train. It is still rather cold with temperatures of around 11C during the day and about 5C durin...

A French Cafe in Ningbo! We were so excited when Julie told us about this cafe and couldn't wait to try it out. I really wanted to eat dessert there for my birthday but the cafe closes at 8pm which is too early.Today, David did not go to work - he had to stay in the city to meet a client in the afternoon so we had an opportunity to go have lunch there. It is only a short walk from our place.Since it was a weekday, we were the only customers. Well, there was a local Chinese customer who came in and had a quiche and left after 15 mins. There is no menu but a selection of freshly made sweets and savories laid out for you to choose from. The offering for the day for the savories were a Quiche Lorraine and Ham and Cheese muffins. And there was Chocolate Cake, Apple Pie, Chocolate and Banana Crumble and Pear Cake. I guess it is nice to be surprised when you visit the cafe but sometimes, I might just want to eat something I like and have a craving for but I guess I could just call to find ...

Feast Modern Restaurant, Ningbo
2007-12-09 03:23:00
The exterior was very well lit with soft lights.I like the red painted wooden doors. We don't often get to fine dine in China but on the occasions we do, they have been great experiences. For one thing, the food is always a delight and the interior decorating something I'd rave about. They really don't spare any expense to create the atmosphere needed for a fine dining experience. From the upholstery, to the lighting, to the tableware and smaller decorative items, the more exclusive Chinese restaurants are really something. We were treated to dinner yesterday at Feast Modern Restaurant near the Yuyao river. We've driven past the restaurant during the day and it didn't look as impressive as it did that night, when the lights illuminated the 200 year old Qing dynasty house.Opulent is the probably the best way to describe the interior. Old Chinese homes center around an open air courtyard surrounded by the main living room which faces the main entrance and smaller rooms with doors fa...

Maya Cafe, Ningbo
2007-11-27 07:54:00
I was expecting a Chinese coffee house because of the Western deco but a survey of the menu shows that it is a Chinese restaurant.I am not really a fan of pork but I have to say that Grandma's Roast Pork was delicious and sinful with its layer of fat. Sweet sauce covered the whole dish and when eaten with rice, is very appetizing. I left the layer of fat alone - not wanting it to clog my arteries and make its way to my tummy! The silken tofu dish with pine nuts will also become my favorite. To round up, we had stir fried asparagus.I had almost 2 bowls of rice for lunch. I guess the carbohydrates were necessary since we did a lot of walking that morning - exploring the little boutiques around that area.

Nice landscaped gardens remnants of the Golden WeekA view of a parkThe city skyline caught at duskAnother interesting flower/shrub arrangementsThey look like lizards with dragon heads on their tail!Ningbo's Gulou with a very modern clock designI walked out without my camera today and relied on my phone. The resolution may not be great but I managed to snap quite a few nice shots. I walked to and from Tianyi Square back home and it felt nice to get a bit of exercise and take in the city on foot.

Ningbo Museum of Art
2007-10-06 16:57:00
I went to the Ningbo Museum of Art today to look at Rembrandt's etchings. I only now find out that etchings are created by drawing with a needle onto a resin-coated plate. When the plate is immersed in acid, the needle lines are cut, or etched, into the plate. Technically, producing an etching is not unlike creating a drawing! It was a pleasant afternoon out and I enjoyed the quiet and peacefulness of the museum.

Jujube Tree @ Ningbo
2007-10-06 16:16:00
My friend ate at Jujube Tree Restaurant in Shanghai and found out that they have a branch in Ningbo so he recommended that I try. When I told my friend here, she said that she has been there and the food is good. It is a vegetarian restaurant.Today I was out almost the whole day spending it with a friend. We had lunch at the Japanese Restaurant which name I don't know unless it is actually named "Japanese Restaurant"! Then we went over to the Ningbo Museum of Art to look at the exhibition of Rembrant's etchings - how cultured! We were headed home after but since it is a Saturday, I asked her to hang out with me until David finished work - Yes! He had to work! Poor guy :( and then we could go for dinner together. With quite a few hours to while away, we walked to Tianyi Square. It was there that my friend had a brilliant idea to go have some desserts at Swaka - a local dessert cafe which I have also been wanting to try. We both had a mango juice with mango fruit and mango jelly - ca...

Japanese Restaurant @ Lao Wai Tan, Ningbo
2007-10-06 15:41:00
I don't know the name of this Restaurant!I went out to meet a friend for lunch today. It was drizzling so we searched for a place to eat near our meeting point @ Lao Wai Tan. We checked out a Chinese restaurant but were not that eager for abalone, bird's nest and shark's fin - all the more expensive Chinese dishes. When Japanese was mentioned, I was happy at the suggestion.Tempura with udon in soup.I always add wasabi into my Japanese noodle soupto give it some oomph!I love natto beans!I was so happy they had this on the menu.I always ask for the menu in English. As this is a restaurant in the Lao Wai Tan area, they usually have one but be careful - they may not translate it well as I found out today.I had a craving for natto bean sushi and pointed to "fermented soybeans" on the menu but what was served were edamame beans. At first we thought they were complimentary appetizers - most Japanese restaurants serve a simple appetizer before you start your meal. Good thing we checked. ...

Back Home in Ningbo
2007-09-18 04:26:00
I can't believe that it actually feels like home in Ningbo. We arrived about midnight yesterday and immediately felt a sense of belonging. It is scary to feel like that since we have no thoughts of relocating permanently to China. To me, this stint, is like an extended overseas trip!I figure that having a more permanent place in Ningbo makes me feel at home and again, I was reminded by someone just the day before we left that, home is where the heart is and so I guess this is home for a while.I've got loads to do today since we brought back 2 suitcases full of food and cooking stuff which needs to be sorted out, not to mention laundry and house cleaning. I've also got to catch up on my blogging!

Old House of Szechuan cuisine at Xiaowen JieWe had a mini feast yesterday night to celebrate Esther and Punit's birthdays earlier since we won't be here next week. It was our treat for them and we headed for this Szechuan restaurant near our place. It was also at this restaurant that we first met Punit and Rohith. We like the food there and we each ordered our favorites. We are an unusual group where eating is concerned. Punit is strictly vegetarian and Rohith is Hindu and doesn't eat beef. So ordering can be tricky but thanks to their openness, we have been able to enjoy many meals together! The beef wrapped in lotus leaf was excellent. It was loaded with garlic!Another version of potato strips.Instead of spicy and sour, the strips were deep friedwith dried chilies and coriander leaves were added. It was really nice.Sweet and sour pork ribs - one of Rohith's favoriteThis was also an excellent tofu dish with celery, leek, brinjal and chili.Diced chicken pieces with peanut and dried...

Ciao Italia, Ningbo
2007-08-12 16:20:00
Today we wanted to eat Italian and we decided to try this restaurant listed on the Ningbo Guide and since I was chatting with Lusha on MSN I asked if she would like to join us for dinner. The menu was pretty extensive. The selection for each course is varied. I must say that I couldn't decide! David was going for a pizza while I was torn between the risotto and the steak. In the end I settled for a pasta, Lusha had a pizza, David changed his mind and ordered the homemade gnocchi.Lusha's pizza margheritaDavid ordered homemade gnocchi with spinachMy fusili with seafood and pesto sauce was excellent.I like it that the chef put black olives and raisins in it.I also had a glass of white wine and David had the red. It was pretty good and I was happy that my wine wasn't too dry.We don't usually eat the full 5 course meals Italians eat. We have either a salad and a primi (1st course) or skip the starter/salad and save room for dessert.I had a full course Italian lunch once. We were in M...

First Cinema Experience, Ningbo
2007-08-11 18:00:00
If Esther didn't tell me that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was showing at Wanda Cinema I would have found out later but then I would have taken much longer to make it to the cinema here. She mentioned that she and her friends were going to head there to see if they could get tickets and I sorta asked to tag along :) She got tickets - Yeah! And we drove out to meet them.I was hesitant about driving but David was gung ho and said that if we didn't start to explore we'd never get anywhere. So armed with a map (in Chinese!) we planned our route and set off. We realize that driving in China can be easy. The roads are wide, the signs are pretty clear and it is arranged like a grid so if you've got good bearings, you can't get lost. You only have to, sometimes avoid oncoming traffic - taxis overtake indiscriminately; watch out for pedestrians who cross anytime; and have eyes all round your head to look out for cyclists who can come from any direction. Otherwise driving is ...

Driving in Ningbo
2007-08-11 10:09:00
We drove out ourselves for the first time today. David only needed a few reminders to stay on the right side of the road! It was an uneventful drive except for spotting a "bra shop". Very direct in terms of marketing :)We didn't go too far. Ten minutes and we went from the west to the east of the city to our familiar haunt. He was craving for a sandwich from O'Reilly's and I wanted to get a massage.Parking around that area was easy but we had a bit of difficulty with the new meter parking system. There was no coin slot for the machine. We noticed this lady using a card to load the meter and were looking around to see where we could purchase a parking card. I guess the system is very new because there was this man walking around manning the meters and selling the card. The system is like Touch 'N' Go back in Malaysia. Swipe when you park, swipe again when you leave and the cost is deducted from your credit.David went off for his sandwich and I went to the nearby shop for a Thai ...

Nanyuan Hotel, Ningbo
2007-08-06 15:52:00
One of the highlights of Makanning Ningbo is having dinner at Nanyuan Hotel. The food is really superb here.Today we had spring rolls - light crispy pastry deep fried with fresh vegetables inside; steamed crabs with light soy sauce and wine - the crab meat was so sweet and there were lots of roe; seafood broth with puff pastry - the broth was nice and thick, and filled with goodies; fresh scallops cooked with lots of garlic and some vermicelli; razor clams with some salted vegetables; fried beancurd with some chili sauce; diced chicken with dried chilies; tung poh pork, and some other vegetable dishes. All the dishes are prepared well and the quality never varies. We've always been impressed by the food and have not been disappointed yet.The packaging is impressive! We got a little extra when we were leaving, David's partner who is always our host when we eat there gave us some mooncakes. The Mid Autumn Festival is coming up soon. Not really that soon because it is supposed to be s...

Elements@Lao Waitan, Ningbo
2007-07-29 08:04:00
On the dot at 10pm we walked over from Indian Kitchen to Elements Restaurant & Lounge where the music was already loud. We were given our bracelets upon entering. I got 2 because ladies get a free toilet pass. The party is called, "Break the Seal" where we paid RMB75 (early bird price) for drink all you want. When you need to go to the toilet, they cut your bracelet and after that you'd have to pay for drinks. There were finger food going around and I had a few chicken nuggets which were quite good.*The restaurant was having the party as a sort of soft launch. The official one is sometime in August. My first drink was sangria and it wasn't half bad with loads of cut fruits. Next was a tequila sunrise served in a Jack Daniel's etched glass tumbler which I really like (I mean the tumbler!). After that I stuck with Bacardi and coke. David and I had quite a lot to drink!I checked out the menu and after chatting with the owner cum chef, David found out that Richard is from Hong Kong an...

Yellow dhal butter friedFish masalaDavid's favorite restaurant in Ningbo has to be Indian Kitchen. Surprisingly, we haven't been there to eat since we got here in June. Yesterday was our first visit and David was greeted familiarly by the restaurant manager who recognized us. The manager even remembered David's preference for Coke Light. There was the weekend buffet but we opted for ala carte because I wasn't really hungry and wouldn't do the eat all you can invite, any justice. I usually do the ordering because I am more familiar with the dishes but David tried yesterday night. In the end it was still my suggestion to have the yellow dhal dish and it tasted great with naan bread. I really have to try to find the recipe. We met Saravanan, the operations manager later at the party next door and I tried a few Tamil words I learned from my friend, Kavitha on him and his friend Ashok. They had a good laugh and with that I wrangled a promise from them to teach me how to cook the dhal ...

David is not working today because there's no electricity at the factory due to some upgrading works. What started as a boring day for me and him turned out pretty well towards dinner. I usually don't cook on his days off so that we can explore the city a bit and eat out.We were actually undecided but since we'd already visited O'Reilly's some weeks back, we decided to go to Lao Waitan instead. It is Ningbo's version of the Bund. It was quite deserted last year but tonight, it was teeming with dinner patrons as well as people strolling near the river. We headed for Casa Maya a Mexican Restaurant which opened on the 21st of this month. It was deserted and after looking through the menu, I can see that David wanted to head to Indian Kitchen. The hostess was Filipino and she noticed we weren't local. She persuaded us to try and told us that the chef was authentic Mexican. The restaurant was actually located on the 1st floor hence the deserted ground floor.A spiral staircase broug...
