2008-05-30 06:48:00 Scott McClellan was one of a few Bush loyalists from Texas who became part of his inner circle of trusted advisers, and remained so during one of the most challenging and contentious periods of recent history. He gives readers a candid look into who George W. Bush is and what he believes, and into the personalities, strengths, and liabilities of his top aides. The Post-American World (Hardcover)
2008-05-28 06:56:00 "This is not a book about the decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone else." So begins Fareed Zakaria's important new work on the era we are now entering. Following on the success of his best-selling The Future of Freedom, Zakaria describes with equal prescience a world in which the United States will no longer dominate the global economy, orchestrate geopolitics, or overwhelm cultures. He sees the "rise of the rest"?the growth of countries like China, India, Brazil, Russia, and many others?as the great story of our time, and one that will reshape the world. The tallest buildings, biggest dams, largest-selling movies, and most advanced cell phones are all being built outside the United States. This economic growth is producing political confidence, national pride, and potentially international problems. How should the United States understand and thrive in this rapidly changing international climate? What does it mean to live in a truly global era? Zakaria answers...

Nonfiction Books: Why I Hate Them, Why I Think Every Nonfiction Author Shou
2008-05-08 20:15:00 Why does every single non fiction book include a colon followed by a friggin' paragraph-long subtitle? That ticks me off a lot more than it probably should. It doesn't help that the two biggest offenders, political hit jobs and and self help books, are the two most deplorable genres anyone could ever write about. It's bad enough they're blood-sucking leeches, but do they have to be so obnoxious about it? One of these days someone is going to write "CHAMPION!: The true story of how I overcame adversity, and against all odds, wrote a book with the longest subtitle in history and scored a bunch of chicks and a sweet movie deal, so look for Champion!: The true story of how I overcame adversity, and against all odds, wrote a book with the longest subtitle in history and scored a bunch of chicks and a sweet movie deal in theaters this Summer. If I ever write a nonfiction book, The title will just be something short, followed by a colon. And the entire inside of the book will be th...

The Revolution: A Manifesto (Hardcover)
2008-04-22 15:44:00 The Founding Fathers didn't want any of this. In fact, they said so quite clearly in the Constitution of the United States of America. Unfortunately, that beautiful, ingenious, and revolutionary document is being ignored more and more in Washington. If we are to enjoy peace, freedom, and prosperity once again, we absolutely must return to the principles upon which America was founded. But finally, there is hope . . .In THE REVOLUTION,Texas congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul has exposed the core truths behind everything threatening America, from the real reasons behind the collapse of the dollar and the looming financial crisis, to terrorism and the loss of our precious civil liberties. In this book, Ron Paul provides answers to questions that few even dare to ask.Despite a media blackout, this septuagenarian physician-turned-congressman sparked a movement that has attracted a legion of young, dedicated, enthusiastic supporters . . . a phenomenon that has amazed veteran...

New Kings of Nonfiction
2008-04-02 06:49:00 This is what I’m reading…edited by Ira Glass (of This American Life-fame) it’s a compilation of great non-fiction writing. I’m almost done, and by far, the story about Lois Weisberg is my favorite. If you’re a fan of NPR or PRI, I think you’ll love this book. I think they were giving it away when you donated so much to PRI…but I got my copy at the library. It’s about a week overdue now, but I want to finish it. On my iPod, I’m enjoying Zaproot, Threadbangers, TPM Media’s Veracifier, This American Life, NPRs Selected Shorts, New Yorker Fiction, and Slate’s Political Gabfest. Check them all out! Free is awesome! My current favorite activitie is to put on hot lingerie, my iPod, and work on a quilt. Just kidding about the lingerie. But I do love to sew with my iPod on. It is true peace. I highly recommend it.
The Best Of Lame/Cool: The Best Nonfiction Book About a Topic So Lame It's
2008-03-31 03:30:00 Recently, I explained the concept of "The Coolness Continuum" in the context of puns involving cosmic carrots and anthropomorphic superheroes. But there is no concept so clear that I cannot run it straight into the ground. So, to celebrate/explain/bore you to tears with "The Coolness Continuum," I hereby designate the whole next month The Coolness Continuum Month At The Best Of Everything.Which means I'll be naming things that are The Best of Lame/Cool in their category. Still with me? Stay along for the ride!Today, it's The Best Nonfiction Book About a Topic So Lame It's Cool.As a general rule, I do not like nonfiction books. That's because I look at books as entertainment, and escapism, and nonfiction by its very definition is not escapist. It's the opposite of escapist. It's capturist, or whatever the opposite would be. Why? Because life is nonfiction. See? Your whole life is true. Your whole life is based on actual events. So when it's time to kick back with a nice hefty ...
Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took V
2008-03-29 20:44:00 From BooklistFor the first third of his nonfiction debut, novelist Mezrich craps out. Ground lights viewed from an airplane aren't just pinpricks, or even little pinpricks, but "tiny little pinpricks." Las Vegas tourism facts are crammed onto the pages like seven decks in a six-deck shoe. But Mezrich finally hits the jackpot on page 79, when M.I.T. student Kevin Lewis steps onto the floor of the Mirage. The book stays on a roll as it describes how the young gambler and his card-counting cohorts employ simple math and complex disguises to win nearly $4 million at the blackjack tables. Bouncing from huge scores to frightening banishments, the M.I.T. team fights a winning battle against the law of averages--until they're forced to flee south like Butch and Sundance from the gaming industry's Joe LeFors. Although Mezrich's prose never rises above serviceable (and he pointlessly injects himself into the narrative at every turn), the story he tells will grip anyone who has ever hoped ...

Graphic Nonfiction
2008-01-25 00:51:00 Graphic Nonfiction, or the arrival of political history and personal memoirby Steven WilliamsOne of the more innovative areas where reading and comics have merged in the last twenty years or so has been the genre now very broadly labeled the graphic novel. A cousin to this type of book is the similarly published nonfiction comic in trade paperback and hardcover format. Bound comic series have traditionally been made available for the more serious and committed comic book readers and collectors. Nonfiction graphic books on the other hand, even those that are compilations of work initially published in the most familiar stapled spine comic format, have emerged to appeal to more than an aficionado?s interest. Some series, notably 'American Splendor' by Harvey Pekar and 'Love and Rockets' by the brothers Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez are autobiographical comics/comic novels and have been produced for years, initially in a more or less traditional comic book format and then compiled int...

The Truth is Stranger Than Fiction/Nonfiction?
2007-06-15 21:10:00 --Occasionally I will be posting reviews of books, movies and music. Some of the reviews may be concerning classics or movies/music that came out a long time ago. Hopefully bringing things from the past into the blog will cause others to enjoy them. America is too obsessed with the now. Learn from the past. This book is the perfect start.--And the Waters Turned to Bloodby Rodney Barker (1998) Science can be looked at as a series of serendipitous accidents. These accidents lead to discoveries that in turn lead to conclusions and changes in how we perceive the world around us. And the Waters Turned to Blood chronicles, in novel form, one such case. The fact that this novel is based on true events is both a positive and a negative. On the one hand the reader is mystified at the end of the book and somewhat frightened about entering bodies of water ever again. Yet, we also have to question whether this attempt at toeing the line between fiction and nonfiction is anything but commerciali...
