Ice to disappear entirely from the North Pole!
2008-06-28 06:46:00
For the first time in human history the ice in the Arctic is set to disappear, one of the biggest signs of Global Warming, as per scientists. This could spell doom to marine life and also affect those who reside along the coast of this region. The natives will bear the brunt since there will arise a danger of them getting swamped by the water from melting ice and it might prove to be sufficient enough to sound the death knell of their culture as a whole. And hold your breath... the mass melting of ice will affect regions beyond the Arctic as well. Due to the dramatic rise in sea-level, major cities around the world would face the negative side of mother nature. And whats more... according to some experts the North Pole could lose all it's ice cover by the end of this year! According to a leading newspaper in India, "The Times of India", this disappearance of the Arctic sea ice will make it possible to reach the North Pole in a boat through open water...The question which immedia...

A new interview with D56's "MsLitTown"
2008-05-24 16:15:00
I had the opportunity to interview Melinda Seegers this week. She's better known as "MsLitTown", Department56's Manager of Consumer Services. She makes herself available to answer consumer questions for the company. * When did you start with D56 and what was your background? I started at Department 56 in 1989 right here in Consumer Services. Believe it or not, my background is in education. I am a former junior high school teacher. I have always been interested in the history of things so I thoroughly enjoyed researching the history and architecture of the Villages and Snowbabies. * What was the most successful new product introduction to date? This is tough, but the most exciting introduction I've seen was probably when we introduced the North Pole Series in 1990. It was great fun to be part of a completely new Village series that interested so many people. * You've answered a lot of questions for D56. I'd like to ask you what YOU collect? A little of many d...

Russia accused of annexing the Arctic for oil reserves by Canada

The battle for “ownership” of the polar oil reserves has accelerated with the disclosure that Russia has sent a fleet of nuclear-powered ice breakers into the Arctic. It has reinforced fears that Moscow intends to annex “unlawfully” a vast portion of the ice-covered Arctic, beneath which scientists believe up to 10 billion tons of gas and ...

Many excellent North Pole suggestions
2008-04-26 13:29:00
Thanks to all for the wonderful suggestions for my son's first North Pole piece. I'm not sure which one we are leaning toward, but I will certainly let everyone know. It's funny, because we are space challenged in our condo, and I am going to have to part ways with some Snow Village pieces to give us some extra storage room. I'd gladly exchange Snow Village for North Pole pieces, but I'd definitely have to give up 2 or 3 pieces for 1 so that we end up with more storage space. Here are some of the suggestions which came in:"I have every piece of the village. My recommendation for your first piece would be Santa?s original house with the two accessories. One accessory is of Santa and Mrs. Claus with an elf and the second accessory is Santa?s sled and eight reindeer. I would follow with the Yummy Gummy Factory. It's a cool piece and has gummy tree accessories that accent the factory." "The one you can find at the greatest discount! By the time he's old enough, Christmas of '09,...
What North Pole piece should I get first for my son?
2008-04-17 01:39:00
As most of you know, this blog has been a creative outlet for me at times, allowing me to write about my favorite holidays and collectibles. I know lately I've been mentioning our first child - a boy - and how excited we are to bring him into the world, teach him right and wrong, help him through different decisions and circumstances, and watch him develop his own interests and hobbies. We'll certainly introduce him to many things, one of them being the joy of Department 56, of seeing a village collection grow and take form. We've decided to get him started on the North Pole Series - we love it's whimsical themes and colors. Now the question is: Which piece to get the collection started?I'll be gathering suggestions and ideas from the many readers of this blog and the different D56 groups of which I participate. I'll then post a poll of the top suggested pieces. Can't wait!Discover more Department56 Sales today!

North Pole And The Inukshuks
2007-12-23 23:01:00
The North Pole is the zone of Earth where the axis of rotation is. Its contrary is the South Pole. In the North Pole is the Arctic Ocean. The first explorer that is known to have reached the North Pole was called Robert Edwin Peary. He reached the North Pole in 1909, with his assistant Matthew Henson, and four Eskimos. The North Pole is also known as the Arctic. The word comes from the Greek "artus", and from the Latin "ursus", and means "land of bears". Among the North Pole fauna there are polar bears, seals, and sea creatures that live under the so called "sea ice", that is another name of the Arctic Ocean. Among the vegetation can be found lichens and other small plants that are able to resist the extreme cold. In the most external zones of the North Pole, there is more presence of vegetation and fauna. The so called "pole star" points to the North Pole, being a natural compass. In this place is where the Aurora Borealis can be more easily watched (also called Northern Lights). The ...

Sam has become an impressively skilled film maker. He uses a video camera, his computer, and every airplane/ship/train model he can find to tell his stories. I can already see the Steven Spielberg potential in his vision and intensity of focus. This morning he informed me that he wants an “Aero Line Playmobile Airport.” I reminded him that he still needs to write up a Christmas list. It was 6:15 AM. He had not yet eaten or dressed for school, but ran toward the art supplies box in search of pencil and paper. But he didn’t write a list. He drew up a contract. As soon as he realized there was no chance I’d run out right then to secure his coveted airport, he crossed out the line in the middle. What cannot be seen is the line at the very end, which he erased: “… or you’ll be tied to the railroad tracks!” When I asked him why he kept the part about walking the plank, but erased the threat of death by MetroLiner, he said, “I thoug...

Such a thought: The north pole, the Bodenschätze and the climatic protectio
2007-09-04 12:00:00
Me some time ago already in such a way a thought came:Russia, the USA (over Alaska), Denmark, Canada… it everything are interested in the Bodenschätze, which are assumed under the still existing ice of the north pole. In order to come to this Rostoffe in probably 20 to 30 years near, these countries would have to almost be interested to heat the climatic change up (in the wahrsten sense of the word)! Because, if it succeeded to limit or strongly slow it down, you would also ice conditionally not approach to vernüntigen costs to the Bodenschätze. In addition then also still the Antarctic could probable be thawed out with the oil assumed at the north pole. But if they destabilize the Gashydrate are conclusion with merry. This fun exterminated already times nearly that entirely lives on this planet.
