Al-Qaeda and Taliban nexus in Pakistan's tribal belt: US
2007-10-10 17:00:00 CNews WASHINGTON: Pakistan's rugged tribal zones are the alleged hideout of Osama bin Laden and home to an array of militant factions -- and if history is any judge, subduing them will be a bloody struggle.Three days of some of the deadliest clashes since the fall of neighbouring Afghanistan's Taliban regime in 2001 have left around 200 militants and 45 soldiers dead, along with an unknown number of civilians.Al-Qaeda has regrouped in the pine-dotted region, according to the United States, while militant sources say bin Laden's son and possible successor, Hamza, has recently arrived there. At its heart is a nexus between mainly Arab Al-Qaeda agents and local tribesmen who either support the Taliban or directly take part in attacks on security forces in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.A recent bout of militant infighting that claimed 300 lives in South Waziristan exposed some of the shadowy dealings in the region.Pakistani pro-Taliban rebels took on other militants led by a fugitive ...
Stop Air Strikes in North Waziristan
2007-10-09 19:41:00 The people in the tribal belt and in the North/South Waziristan are as much Pakistanis as are the people in Lahore, Islamabad and in Karachi. They themselves want to live in peace and harmony. They also dont want to breed militancy within the state, and they also dont want to attack their own army.Agreed, sometime back when US attacked Afghanistan, Talibans of Arab and Azbuk origin fled to this area, but now after a severe operation by Pakistani forces for some months, they have gone back to the hideouts in Afghanistan and elsewhere, and now there are some local Talibans who are Pakistanis fighting with the army.Force cannot resolve this issue. Carpet bombing in Tehsil Mir Ali and other parts of Waziristan is not the solution. Hundreds of residents are getting injured and are dying with wounds in their own houses, while the air strikes by our air force carries on. People are crying that there are no more militants there, and there are only common citizens who are with the army.It is...
