Sportaphile Was Right, Sportaphile Was Wrong
2008-01-22 05:53:00 I make a lot of bold predictions, statements, and accusations on this site. Some of them turn out to be 100% right (ya know, because I’m a genius), and some of them turn out to be complete BS. I thought it’d be fun to take a look back at my greatest triumphs, and blunders for ...

Norv Turner is Still an Idiot
2008-01-21 06:24:00 Oh Norv. Just when you had everybody convinced your past coaching missteps were ancient history, you go ahead and do something like this. The Chargers were down two scores with nine minutes left to play. They had 4th and 10 from the Patriots 36. And they punted. It was a decision that was stupefying, indefensible, and moronic. Down two scores with nine minutes left Turner gave the ball back to the most prolific offense of all time in order to gain 25 yards of field possession. Right then and there any hope of a comeback disappeared. Turner was counting on forcing an improbable three-and-out, getting the ball back with seven minutes left, scoring a touchdown, forcing another improbable three-and-out, and driving for a winning field goal. That’s called having too much confidence in your defense. Or being somebody with the brain the size of a pea. Turner’s fatal decision was just the culmination of a completely botched set of downs. The Chargers had 1st and 10 on the 36. Ev...

Two Coaching Decisions Influence Playoff Wins - And Norv Turner Got It Righ
2008-01-07 14:12:00 If you listened to the pundits last week discussing the Chargers/Titans game, you heard the same idea over and over again: Norv Turner was a liability to the Chargers' hopes of winning the playoff game. Turner has been a favorite target of analysts since the moment he was hired last summer. No one

Message Board Marauder
2007-10-02 16:32:00 It's time for our weekly look at the latest intellectual debates taking place on sports message boards.ChargersTalk: "The Official Sympathy for Norv Turner and the Chargers Thread. Guys, lets cut this guy some slack please. Give him another chance. Afterall, it takes more than a head coach to lose a game ... Lets hang in there and stop calling for our GM's head too because, he really try to do the best he could given the situation ... I wouldnt mind Norv pulling a motivational stunt and actually flying Marty in to give the players a speech. Hang in there guys, we still have a long way to go. Go BOLTS!" - benjamink15ESPN.com - MLB General: "Everybody knows the Cubs were the best team in 2003. If not for that idiot Steve Bartman we would have made the World Series and easily won it all." - Cubs2003WS_ChampsPhilafans.com:- ?Fire Andy Reid! His act and excuses are getting very tiresome.Reid had his chance and the window is closed. After this year a new coach can begin a new era with a n...

New Coach Preview - Norv Turner
2007-06-16 00:27:00 Norv Turner - San Diego Chargers Résumé Highlights: 1991 - Off Coord, Dallas Cowboys 1994 - Head Coach, Washington Redskins 2001 - Off Coord, San Diego Chargers 2002 - Off Coord, Miami Dolphins 2004 - Head Coach, Oakland Raiders 2006 - Off Coord, San Francisco 49ers 2007 - Head Coach, San Diego Chargers Impact: Here's another guy that's been around the coaching block a couple of times without a great deal of success. And each time he fails, he returns as an offensive coordinator, gets amazing results, and gets hired as a head coach again. Rinse. Repeat. I don't get it. I'll give the guy a break though, this time he may have done it correctly. He now takes over a team that went 14-2 last season, has a devastating defense, the greatest fantasy player in the game running the ball, and a young, ready-to-break-out QB to mentor. That's a great situation no matter how you look at it. In fact, I would go as far as to say i...

Fact Check: Norv Turner/Joe Gibbs V2.0 Win %
2007-03-29 23:47:00 Surely this isn't right, so I need some Fact Checking. Post inspired by a Curly R Caption Contest where winners may or may not get a Joe Theismann poster. Intriguing, no? While trying, and failing, to think of a clever caption for the picture (which shows Norv Turner gesticulating at Joe Gibbs -- Ben's word, not mine. I think that means he was trying to fart on him? I fail engrish), I thought: wouldn't it be interesting if Norv Turner compared his tenure in Washington with Gibbs' second tenure in Washington? They both experienced more failure than victory, they both went to the posteason just once (winning a game than being eliminated), and they both suffered the Dan Snyder. So there are some parallels here, perhaps more than we know... Norval's record as the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins: Won 49 of 109 games, .450 Winning Percentage. Remember that Robiskie closed out the 2000 season 1-2. Joe Gibbs v2.0 record as the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins: Won 21 of 48 g...

San Diego Chargers and Norv Turner
2007-02-21 07:22:00 If you read the San Diego Union Tribune this morning, you would understand how unhappy the fans are of the recent new head coach signing. Many recognize how good of an offensive coordinator Norv Turner is, but don't see his head coach potential. Someone asked me what I thought of the recent signing and I don't think he is there to coach. He seems to be just a puppet to me. I am weary about the four year deal though but I am sure he won't serve the full term. Again, I think Aj Smith is going to be pulling a lot of the weight. If Turner doesn't fall in line, he will soon too, be gone.I am glad to see Ron Rivera there, but I see that definitely as a short time role, more like a stepping stone. It is very odd that the Chicago Bears decided not to retain him. I do of course, expect the Chargers defense to do well, and getting Rivera as a linebackers coach should definitely prove to be a plus this next season. It should also serve as a plus for Rivera, as he should project back to a de... |
