Blogging Nova Scotia Relaunch
2008-05-30 02:33:00
On June 1st Blogging Nova Scotia will begin its third year on reporting news around the province. To coincide with the anniversary the site will be relaunched and tightly focused on provincial updates. My goal will be to bring all Nova Scotians the latest updates from the provincial government and how they affect each of us. Law changes, ideas being considered, where tax dollars are being spent and of course the weekly gas price predictions and results. I will also show how each decision will affect both us and businesses in our area. There will also be a new URL which will be found at http://bloggingnovascotia.blogs-pot.com so make sure you update your bookmarks. The site will debut on June 1st 2008 with a new design (currently in progress) and a better organization scheme.Spread the word and thank you to everyone who has supported me in the past. I welcome any effort to help promote the relaunch and hope to see you all on the new site.

Paul McCartney In Nova Scotia
2008-04-09 18:35:00
Rumors are flying around the city that the ex-Beatle may have a concert upcoming in Halifax. After his comments last year I am quite surprised he is even entertaining the idea. On Larry King Live he called the seal hunt (which is fairly popular here), a stain on the character of the Canadian people. He even traveled to the North Atlantic to get a few pictures of him with the cute baby animals. Now he may end up in our backyards looking for us to pay money to see him in concert. Kind of ironic in the grand scheme of things. Personally I could care less about his stance on the seal hunt, but I won't be going anyways. I am waiting for the city to attract big concerts from people still making hit music today. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

Nova Scotia Pharmacare Coverage Begins
2008-03-03 19:36:00
The new health care for all Nova Scotian's begins today. The Province suspects that 190,000 people are without a health care plan in our province and this plan could help all of them.A new pharmacare program was launched today (March 3rd) to help Nova Scotians and their families with the cost of prescription drugs. Premier Rodney MacDonald says with rising drug costs, this universal drug plan will help Nova Scotians get the drugs they need to stay healthy. The program is available to all Nova Scotians. A provincewide mail-out to almost 400-thousand Nova Scotia homes encourages people to learn about and, enrol in, the program. Enrolment forms and program information are available on the website at http://www.nspharmacare.caThe idea is well laid out, and will even help those who currently have health care plans (but to a lesser extent). The costs are expected to reach $50 million.More information about the program is available in one of my previous posts at "Health Care Plan...
Nova Scotia, Canada: The Next New England
2008-02-08 19:44:00
If you're on a budget, tired of crowded beaches and packed hotels, love seafood, and have a 19th-century mindset, then Nova Scotia is for you. It's being called "The Next New England." Think New England, and vivid images come to mind: of lighthouses and fishing boats, charming coastal towns, lobster and crab, Victorian homes and rich history. It has always been an intriguing region, steeped in truth and in fiction by the novels of Stephen King. If you like New England, you'll love Nova Scotia, Canada's second smallest province. Find Nova Scotia on a map in the North Atlantic, east of the state of Maine and "vacation hotspot" won't be the first thing that comes to mind. But don't let Nova Scotia's northern location fool you. Summertime temperatures are comfortable and winters are milder and less snowy than in many northern states. Situated just two hours from New York City or Boston, Nova Scotia feels a world away...as if you've stepped back in time. Largely underdeveloped an...
New Student Loan Program For Nova Scotia
2008-01-29 19:25:00
Students will save hundreds of dollars thanks to a new student loan program which will begin August 1st 2008. The new program will be a direct loan from the government which will cut the interest on the loans by 2 percentage points. The new program will help out future borrowers and people enrolled in classes after October 31st 2007. There have been some great movements to assist students with obtaining a post secondary education. My only complaint about this program is that it will not include people currently in repayment. They will continue to work with the banks with the current systems. Any money the government makes off the program will be reinvested in to the student assistance program.

NHL in Nova Scotia
2008-01-23 19:58:00
The executive for the National Hockey League's Players Association, Paul Kelly made a very interesting comment yesterday. He specifically named Nova Scotia as a possibility for a future team in the NHL. "if there was an interest there and there was a commitment on the part of the people of Nova Scotia to support a team and build a facility, I would obviously be an ally and would strongly urge that it be seriously considered."He explained in more depth today that he believes that expansion in to huge American markets is not the direction that the NHL should be taking. Smaller communities with strong ties to hockey could make a team profitable even with the small populations.I tend to disagree but would be very happy to see a team in our region. It would create a lot of economic spin offs and create a stronger sense of community. My concern is that the prices for a hockey game are outside the reach of many in Nova Scotian's to attend on a regular basis. The Halifax Mooseheads have be...

Nova Scotia Power Can Skip Utility Board
2007-12-12 10:50:00
Nova Scotia Power will have the ability to raise and lower the costs of electricity without appearing before the Utility and Review board starting 2010. The price of electricity will rise and fall based on the costs of fossil fuels required to generate it. The Utility and Review board has warned the power company that if a trial run in April is not successful, they will reverse their decision.Nova Scotia Power has been known for their constant rate hike increases over the last few years. Since the company was privatized the focus has shifted from reliable and affordable service to profit. The Chronicle Herald has even mentioned the CEO of Emera (Nova Scotia Powers parent company) on their list of the highest paid CEO's in the province. The question is should NSP be trusted with this power (no pun intended)? If the company is completely upfront about their costs than the project could work. There should however be a review at least once a year on the price changes to ensure the pu...

Hurricane Noel Hits Nova Scotia

The deadliest hurricane of this season is now hitting Nova Scotia. Winds as high as 140 kms could be felt overnight tonight. It may no longer be classified as a hurricane, but the effects are still amazing. Thunder and lightning are lighting up the sky as I write. No power outages have been reported as of yet however they are expected. Have supplies near by and keep safe. I will write a full report tomorrow.
Autism Gold Standard Intervention - Nova Scotia ABA/IEBI Autism Program Pro
2007-10-31 01:43:00
This has not been a good week for those who insist that there is no consensus on a gold standard intervention for autistic children. The AAP description of ABA as an intervention with more than 5 decades of studies providing positive results for autistic children is followed by the results from a Nova Scotia IEBI/ABA study showing positive results. It's enough to give anti-ABA crusaders a real headache.Autism Treatment Program Getting Positive Results Department of HealthOctober 30, 2007 12:00 A program designed to enhance social and communication skills for young children with autism spectrum disorder is providing added benefits to their families. The interim results of an independent program evaluation conducted by IWK Health Centre Research Services and Dalhousie University indicates that after one year of Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI)treatment, virtually all 27 children in the first phase of the program had significantly improved communication skills. Well done Nova Scotia!

The province of Nova Scotia is promoting a "culture of moderation" around alcohol use...Ottawa, August 31, 2007 - The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA), a national organization working to reduce alcohol- and drug-related harm, welcomes Nova Scotia's new alcohol strategy, Changing the Culture of Alcohol Use in Nova Scotia, and is particularly pleased that the provincial strategy embraces a "culture of moderation" as outlined in recent recommendations for a National Alcohol Strategy. An expert working group, co-chaired by CCSA, the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and Health Canada, was created to develop consensus on recommendations for a National Alcohol Strategy. The multi-sectoral working group had representatives from government, non-governmental organizations, industry and regulatory bodies, and the research community. Nova Scotia is the first province to interpret the recommendations for a National Alcohol Strategy at the provincial level."We are very pleased t...

Halifax And Rural Nova Scotia - The Great Divide
2007-08-16 20:12:00
Someone should tell the Nova Scotia Government about the old saying "never put all your eggs in to one basket", because that is exactly what has been happening recently. Every year Halifax receives more and more while every other region struggles to survive. Even with 60% of the people living outside of the city.A good example is within the education department. This year metro opened up 4 new schools while the old Duncan MacMillan High School in Sheet Harbour is in need of replacing. The high school was shut down for weeks due to unsafe mold levels 10 years ago and has caused many students to become sensitive to chemicalsSticking with education for a moment, did you know that many schools have been cutting out programs left and right? Many core programs such physics and pre calculus are only being offered every second year and extended french is a laugh at only two classes per year. Students who choose to go on to university are at a significant disadvantage due to the lack of a pr...

2007-06-28 19:21:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: My Halifax City Tour, expertly narrated by Allen Mackenzie, a passionate Haligonian in a kilt, had provided me with a great overview of this city, and my visit to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic had added to my knowledge of Halifax, particularly of its connection to the Titanic and the 1917 Explosion. Still mulling over the historic significance of this city, the largest population centre on Canada’s East Coast, I sat down close to the waterfront to finally have lunch and strengthen myself after an intense introduction to the city.Rate and Review : Hello from Nova Scotia: Enjoying Halifax' Harbourwalk and Learning about Canada's Immigration History

Memorial Weekend Snowglobe: Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, 2007
2007-05-30 15:58:00
Can there be anything more exhilarating than postponing spring home repairs — sanding, painting, minor roof repairs, all performed on high scaffolding — by virtue of snow and frost that confine one indoors to the leisure of world-class beer and televised postseason hockey? Such was the Memorial week marvel that confronted my buddy Michael up at his vacation getaway in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Deep into May each year Michael makes a 21-hour pilgrimage from Capitol Hill to Belle Cote, Nova Scotia, population approximately 340, to inventory winter’s wear on his magnificent property there. He reminds me of his mission each March, reiterating his open invitation for me to join him. I had my own arduous roadtrip to navigate this month, but am I sorry I couldn’t have been a sweatered witness to the spectacle that touque-wearing Mother Nature, eh?, treated Michael to all of the past 10 days. In previous springs, he’d always been greeted there by spring. Not this year....

10 Things to Experience On Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island
2007-04-27 08:40:00
1) Mountaintop and seaside hiking trails. The Cape Breton Highlands National Park has both easy and rugged trails for both the casual and ambitious hikers. You can hire a hiking tour or just strike out on your own to enjoy the serene and beautiful scenery of the region. 2) Sea Kayaking - hiring a tour guide can provide you with equipment and experience to better encounter the wildlife and rugged scenery of the coast of Cape Breton Island. Depending on where you hire your tour, you can see bald eagles, cormorants, guillemots, pilot whales, a minke. You can find sea kayaking tours from Cheticamp, Cape North, Baddeck, Ingonish, or Louisbourg and places in between. 3) Spend an afternoon in Baddeck, at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum overlooking scenic Bras d' Or Lake. Mr. Bell made his summer home in Baddeck, and the museum houses many of his lesser known, but highly intriguing projects. His hydrofoil, his fascination with tetrahedrons, and many other intriguing things are in the worl...

Hello from Nova Scotia – Driving on the Evangeline Trail from Annapolis Roy
2007-03-05 19:39:04
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Site Latest News :: I had really enjoyed my breakfast at the Garrison House B&B in Annapolis Royal, but my second day of explorations had begun and no time was to be wasted. I had a big drive ahead of me and my first quick stop was at Fort Anne where I met Alan Melanson, the Parks Canada Ranger and expert historian who had guided the entertaining and informative Candlelight Graveyard Tour last night. He had promised me yesterday that he would show me the Fort Anne Heritage Tapestry, a collective effort of more than 100 volunteers who brought 4 centuries of history to life. 95 different colours of Persian wool were interwoven and stitched to form a historic tableau that is unique in Canada. It is about 18 feet long and 8 feet high and even Queen Elizabeth herself, on one of her travels to Canada, made a few official stitches in this tapestry. Alan himself, as a 9th generation Acadian, added to the artwork by stitching a few drops of red blood in the section on ...
