I cannot leave the subject of the re-union without mentioning the highlight of the evening which was The Couch Potato's festive haircut. He is a financial adviser by trade, so throughout the year he sports a rather traditional neat and tidy crop, but at Christmas his urge to rebel is let loose, and he does something radical with his hair. For the past few years he has been sporting a mohican style dies in various colours. However, the Potato has been succumbing to male pattern baldness in recent years, and it appears that there is no longer enough hair along the central plateau of his head to allow the traditional punk hairdo. So, instead this year he has allowed his locks to grow. The natural curl in his har is such that he now looks like a cross between a traditional Scouse scally and Barbara Dickson. It is not a look that is likely to shift many pensions when he returns to work.

A little more about the re-union. I found myself feeling very parochial after the party. Several of the gang have undertaken foreign adventures. One of the group has emigrated to The United Arab Emirates, another was on tour with the Scottish rock group Nazareth and another has trotted around the globe with the oil industry. For my part, I once had to take the car to Cambusnethan to have a Will signed. I have never particularly felt the desire to travel great distances with my work, but on the other hand, I do wonder if working for your whole life in the town you grew up in doesn't tend to narrow your horizons a little bit. I am now going to lobby the others in my office to open branch offices in Patagonia, Switzerland and Marrakesh. I am sure there will be great demand for Scottish lawyers n these territories. The world is there for the taking.

My hangover has mostly disappeared, so I feel able to say a little about the re-union now. Like most people I suppose, I used to hang about with a gang of friends at school. As best I can tell, my own particular group gravitated towards one another because of a mutual love for hard rock music and Dungeons and Dragons, and a complete lack of ability to attract girlfriends. In retrospect I recognise that some of the fairer sex may have been put off by our conversation, centering as it did around topics like "What is the best drum solo you have ever heard?" and "Does a Cloak of Invisibilty work inside K'krull's Thamuturgical Field". The gang were re-united on Saturday night, and special thanks are due to The Couch Potato for hosting the event. I think it was a great success. I cannot be sure, because a lot of the evening is now quite fuzzy because I lost a lot of important brain cells as a consequence of drinking something with Tabasco Sauce in it - my New Year's Resolution is not ...

Eurozone Inflation November 2007
2008-02-11 12:56:00
by Edward Hugh: Barcelona European inflation accelerated more than initially estimated in November, to the fastest pace since May 2001, making it very hard for the ECB to justify moving towards a cut in interest rates even as economic growth slows across the zone. Now normally neither Claus or I pay special attention to the ...

Health and bloody safety. Today my significant other tried to buy a pair of mittens for the Round Faced Boy. Being a sensible type she asked for a pair with the little string attached so that he can?t drop them. Apparently these are now banned because of health and safety. Presumably some expert in a white lab coat has been subjecting mittens to exacting tests in a warehouse somewhere in Essex. I imagine ranks of laborotary rats have been forced to wear mittens of a variety of materials and colours, and one day we will produce the perfect, safe mitten. We will shuffle around the grey streets wearing our UniMitten, perfectly safe, but bored out our tits, longing for the halcyon days when mittens came on strings. What sort of a nation have we become? It seems we need to carry out a risk assessment before rising from bed in the morning, otherwise we run the risk of falling foul of some European Directive on Safe Bed Exit Strategies. We need to assess the potential dangers of loppi...

I have now been blogging every day for over a year. If I had not wasted all this time, I could probably have completed a draft of a short novel. If I had gone to the gym instead I would now have the body of a Greek god and would have extended my life expectancy by three years. But I am selfless, and I chose to spend my time entertaining you - my three regular readers. I know that your lives would be all the poorer without reading about my trips to Morrisons or my Thursday night badminton exploits. In many ways my blog is really a charity, although I note that no-one has yet sent me a donation (in spite of the hours and hours of reading pleasure that I have given you). If this is making anyone feel guilty, then I strongly encourage you to send me money. You will feel better. I assure you. I am also saddened by the fact that none of the Sunday broadsheets has yet offered me a regular column on the strength of the blog. I suspect that the editors are locked in negotiation with their ac...

I bought an engagement present for one of my colleagues today. Even though I am currently teetotal (4 days and counting), I thought I?d buy the happy couple half a dozen bottles of wine. So, I trecked along to the supermarket, made my purchase and carted the wine out to the car in one of these fancy cardboard wine carriers that hold six bottles. These wonders of origami are the luggage of choice for the alcoholic middle-classes ? cunningly devised by the supermarkets to allow lonely housewives and stressed businessmen to tote four times their recommended weekly number of alcohol units out to the BMW in one fail swoop. However, I normally buy my wine in Sainsburys where there wine carrier is sturdy enough to carry diminutive chef Jamie Oliver and five courgettes grown by him on his allotment. Not so the wine carrier from Morrisons. The Morrison?s wine carrier is a flimsy creation. I should have known better than to trust a supermarket not endorsed by young Jamie, as I discovered t...

My significant Other has been engaged in a frenzy of domestic activity. This has largely centered on making me move large objects from one side of rooms to the other, then saying in an undecided tone "I think I liked the piano where it was before. What do you think?" The question "What do you think?" when posed by women that you are close to is a dangerous one for us menfolk. There are few safe answers. If you opt for the seemingly innocuous "I'm happy to leave it up to you," then this is likely to be met with accusations that you never take an interest in her hair/decoration/the need to sponsor a donkey sanctuary in West Wales (delete as appropriate). Equally, telling the truth is generally not an option when it comes to such matters. This is because the truthful answer is almost always "I really don't care. Please can I go back to the important job of alphabetically cataloging my extensive CD collection." Venturing an opinion on the matter in hand carries the risk that your vie...

I have been trying to sell a few shares which I?ve had for three years and which are a total nuisance to me whenever I have to do my tax return. It is almost impossible to sell them. Thus far I?ve had to telephone several different departments, send off two separate forms, and now I?ve had to dispatch my passport and driving licence to somewhere in England. This has all happened since the War of Terror began as far as I can tell, and I sometimes wonder if it is all a bit of an overreaction. I know that we have had some terrible acts of terrorism in the UK recently, but isn?t it the case that we have always been facing some enemy or other over the years, be it the IRA or the communists or the Nazis? It appears to me that I now need to provide identification for almost every transaction that I?m involved in. It has got to the point where I will not be surprised if I pop into Greggs for half a dozen well-fired rolls and a yum yum, and I am faced with a request for my passport, a ...

I have spent a whole weekend without alcohol! I appreciate that this sounds rather like someone who has just emerged from his second AA meeting, but I feel an evangelical fervour that makes me want ? no NEED ? to share this with you. You will probably find me joining the Temperance League shortly, or selling copies of the War Cry in a pub near you. Actually, the experience is interesting. It makes the weekend seem considerably longer than usual. A few drinks on a Friday night inevitably compresses Saturday ? even if you?re not hungover, you feel a bit sluggish. It has been quite nice to feel energetic and bouncy from 8am. And I did not waste my time ? I managed to do a whole lot of work proof reading the book on Saturday morning. If I continue to feel this good, I might go teetotal altogether. That would be good wouldn?t it? A whole lifetime without another alcoholic drink? No! Of course it wouldn?t be good! It would be profoundly depressing.

Thursday, 29 November 2007The author of the book on which the new film The Golden Compass is based has hit back at critics who accuse him of peddling "candy-coated atheism". Phillip Pullman won the Whitbread prize for the third part of his trilogy Philip Pullman dismissed as "absolute rubbish" accusations by the US-based Catholic League that the film promotes atheism and denigrates Christianity. "I am a story teller," he said. "If I wanted to send a message I would have written a sermon." The Golden Compass - which stars Nicole Kidman - premiered in London on Tuesday. Epic battle The film also stars James Bond actor Daniel Craig and is based on the first part of Mr Pullman's best-selling His Dark Materials children's trilogy. My Significant Other is a bit of a fan of glossy ?celebrity? magazines. I put the word ?celebrity? in quotation marks because I generally don?t recognise the people staring up from the shiny pages. Frankly, my idea of a celebrity magazine would cover Charles Dickens, Joe Pettigrew the Aberdeen Striker from the early 80s and Richard Herring. However, I suspect that the publication would appeal to only a very small niche market. Of the magazines my Significant Other devours, I always look out for ?Closer?. It has my favourite column of all time in it. The author is Coleen McLoughlin, fiancée of England striker Wayne Rooney. You might be forgiven for thinking that Coleen is just a pretty face. But you would be wrong. She has clearly either been to journalism college, or alternatively has been closely studying A.A. Gill?s columns in the Sunday broadsheets. Here are a couple of particularly pithy pieces of prose from this week?s column ? ?You won?t see any photos of me in them, but ...

I am just back from the shops (again) and am feeling a bit depressed by the whole experience. More and more, I?m finding that the only shopping that gives me any particular pleasure is the weekly trip down the Main Street with the kids, when we visit the butcher, the baker and the greengrocer. We actually talk to people. We interact. Don?t get me wrong. I?m not a luddite, and I understand entirely the convenience of supermarkets and the quality and variety that they inject into our lives. But there are disadvantages. For all the customer services desks and the ?We?re Here To Help Badges?, the supermarket is an oddly impersonal experience, where we (the customer) seems to be completely separate from the staff in their clinical white jackets, sitting behind high tech counters. Even if you do talk briefly to an assistant to ask where they keep the oak-aged pesto-flavoured cranberry tea, you can expect never to see them again in your life. And I?m not sure that the idea that superm...

Day 2 of my self-imposed alcohol ban. It is a Friday too, so I am feeling particularly self-righteous right now, as I sup my decaffeinated coffee. I intend to get up at 7am tomorrow and telephone all of my friends who are not temporary teetotallers like me. I will sing them a merry tune and tell them how the drink is wasting their lives. I will offer to come to their houses and lecture them on the joys of a healthy lifestyle. I may even start a soup kitchen so that I can dole out nutritious broth to my friends as they hit Skid Row over the next 30 days. It is quite sobering to reflect that the vast majority of Saturday and Sunday mornings over the past 23 years (I know, I know ? it?s difficult to believe I am that old) have been spent in a slight fug owing to hangovers, or at least the after-effects of a few beers the night before. I imagine I could have completed three open university courses and learned how to play the lute during all the time that I have wasted watching Soccer ...
