Where is Nuclear Waste Going?
2008-03-04 18:07:00 From chiefengineer: “Thousands of canisters of highly radioactive waste from the world?s most nuclear-energized nation lie, silent and deadly, beneath this jutting tip of Normandy. Above ground, cows graze and Atlantic waves crash into heather-covered hills. The spent fuel, vitrified into blocks of black glass that will remain dangerous for thousands of years, is in ?interim storage.? ...

Canada to Accept Nuclear Waste
2007-09-15 02:03:00 This weekend the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership will meet in Vienna, Austria to discuss a new era and international agreement governing the use of nuclear fuel. The conference and partnership are being dubbed as an effort to "promote and safeguard the industry". What it is in fact is an attempt to redraw the lines of responsibility for the management of nuclear waste. The heart of the plan is a new agreement stating that all used nuclear fuel be returned to the country of origin for disposal.Canada is the world's largest uranium exporter. The proposal was brought forward by President Bush, and its motivation is clear. As a leader in nuclear energy use the US is looking for ways to offload the costs of nuclear energy and waste management to other nations while continuing to enjoy the benefits - you know, like being wed to a massively subsidized, polluting, and expensive energy source that burdens the next million generations with toxic risk. But by shear accident, Bush has stumbl...

Canada Approves plan to Bury Nuclear Waste
2007-06-18 07:57:00 Last Thursday apparently our neighbors to the north (Canada :P) decided that it was going to be okay to bury nuclear waste deep within the depths of the earth. Environmentalists are saying its too risky, I am saying just do it. No one knows what to do with nuclear waste, no one wants to deal with it either. But the fact is that we must do something with it...and Canada has a vast area of rural unpopulated land. I mean burying it deep underground in a responsible manner is much safer than keeping the 36,000 metric tons of waste at ground level which it is at currently. According to the article finding a suitable location and the time it would take to build a safe storage facility would take 60 years! Talk about taking your time. By the time the facility would be built who knows what kind of new technology might offer us a new or clean renewable energy source. But I just say whatever and let the Canadians do there thing...doesn't harm me in any way.Source: Reuters CanadaTechnorati Ta...

Israel Develops System to Neutralize Nuclear Waste
2007-03-19 13:33:00 (IsraelNN.com) Israel has developed a new technology that is supposed to safely dispose of radioactive waste. The system was developed by Environmental Energy Resources (EER), an Israeli company that helped clean up after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and is based on plasma gasification melting (PMG) technology. The toxic waste is turned into a highly ionized gas, broken down, solidified, melted and vitrified - forming a solid glassy environmentally benign material when cooled.
