Nuke Plant Shutdown Due To Upgrade
2008-06-08 04:53:00 Ah the joys of critical infrastructure. One wrong move with a software upgrade and the whole house of cards could come tumbling down. Case in point. From Washington Post: A nuclear power plant in Georgia was recently forced into an emergency shutdown for 48 hours after a software update was installed on a single computer. The incident occurred ...
More Nuke Double Talk From John W. McBush
2008-05-28 18:08:00 Jon Wolfsthal at Democracy Arsenal has posted what I think is a pretty good analysis of the speech given by “Senator Honor and Virtue” yesterday at the University of Colorado; Wolfsthal summarizes as follows…John McCain’s speech on nuclear weapons seems to adopt the narrowest of lenses in dealing with nuclear weapons. Moreover, his proposals – many of which might sound good – don’t match up with other things he has said on nuclear weapons, on Russia, on Iran and suggests he doesn’t really get the complexity of these issues. Lastly, the tone may be better, but many of the proposals—not to mention his language choices—are right out of George W. Bush’s play book. This may be a wolf in sheep’s clothing, but it is still a wolf.As Wolfsthal notes, McCain is trying to reposition the Repug “brand” as one that encourages talks and disarmament with other nations while still reserving the right to wage pre-emptive war whenever it damn well pleases. In particular, tho...
Media and Intel Community Caught by Apparent Al-Qaida Nuke Message "Prank"
2008-05-28 04:22:00 As of early this evening, ABC News and the Drudge Report are running a headline claiming that "al Qaeda operatives will post a new video on the Internet in the next 24 hours, calling for what one source said is 'jihadists to use biological, chemical and nuclear weapons to attack the West.'" The ABC News report quotes FBI spokesman Richard Kolko as acknowledging that "there have been several reports that al Qaeda will release a new message calling for the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) against...(read more)
UN has epiphany: Says Iran ignoring demands to stop nuke work
2008-05-27 18:29:00 I’m sure it pains them to side with the US. Cueto treading where Nuke LaLoosh has gone before
2008-05-17 01:30:00 Johnny C. had an interesting line today -- he gave up three hits, three earned runs and three homers. The kid sure is susceptible to the long ball. Still, today he was good enough the rest of the time for the win.Anyway, the Reds announcers talked a lot about a meeting this week during which Dusty Baker ordered Cueto not to shake off his catcher anymore. Apparently, the Reds coaches believe Cueto's recent troubles may have stemmed from the fact that he worries too much about what pitch to throw. (Either that or Cueto just plain sucks at pitch selection.) Regardless, it will be Bako (or Ross) calling the shots from here on out when Cueto's on the mound, a setup that worked fairly well today. But if Cueto starts ignoring his catcher again, will Bako go all Crash Davis on him and tip the batter off to what's coming?

Corey, Nuke LaLoosh, and Hell's Kitchen
2008-05-07 23:25:00 There are times when I watch a television show and after it ends I just sit there in amazement and wonder. And not in a good way. Look at last night's Hell's Kitchen. I understand, and have said before (and I'm sure will say again), that reality shows are highly edited. They are. It's the truth. Things can be cut in any number of ways. Good people can be made to look bad and bad people good. Incompetent people can appear like geniuses and vice versa. That's the power of editing. That being said, it appears as though Hell's Kitchen this year is saddled with a bunch of incompetent chefs. We're almost halfway through the season and only Ben and Bobby (Rock Jr., as I like to think of him) seem as though they might be pseudo-acceptable winners. But, even if they win I wouldn't want to eat in their restaurant. On the women's side, some of them have this odd strategy of trying to seduce the guys in order to make them easy targets. I've spent a lot of time thinking about that and I...

Juan Cole Calls BS on NK - Syria Nuke
2008-04-27 13:21:00 A reader of Juan Cole's calls bull on the CIA and US Administration's call that the Syrians are building a replica of the North Korean nuke plant that it was getting ready to go online. I am not a conspiracy nut, but there is much to be desired in this narrative, to say the least. Let's wait until we can see that there is any more evidence here.I am inclined to believe that this is a release of secret info by the hawks inside the Bush Administration who are trying to scuttle peace overtures with both Syria and North Korea with one stone.Syria has recently offered evidence that Israel is willing to give back the whole Golan, and other reports indicate that Israel is maybe going to speak with Hamas. We can't any of that nasty peace stuff breaking out in the Middle East, you know, might leave certain folks awfully unhappy.I have always supported North Korean nuke production and even proliferation to responsible nations, but I do not think there is much going there anyway. Congress ups ante on Nuke deal - Will Karat vote against Budget ?
2008-03-06 20:26:00 So to refresh everyone’s memory. We authored the first chapter of Project Karat back in August of 2007 it appeared that the CPI-Mafioso was keen on expanding the CPI-M’s base beyond Kerala and Bengal even if it means at the cost of a few tolerable losses in the interim. Don Prakash Karat was then aiming to achieve this by not just occuppying the space of the principal opposition in National Affairs but by pretty much setting the agenda and framing the debate for the next election. We had at that time said that BJP will be drawn into an election that is inconveniently timed and one which will be fought on issues defined by the CPI-M. Well then along came the second chapter of Project Karat in October of 2007 at the height of the impasse between the UPA and the Left and it appeared that the Manmohan Singh Government was on life support. At that time Offstumped had elucidated Karat’s three main objectives in taking things to the brink with the Congress. Karat has mainl...

A Little Nuke Music
2008-02-28 19:37:00 The New York Philharmonic?s concert in Pyongyang was a tantalizing taste of what might be in America?s relationship with North Korea. It was also a reminder of the missteps and dangerously wrongheaded judgments that have kept the two countries apart and at saber-point for more than a half century. The Philharmonic drew sustained applause and even some tears, playing Gershwin, a beloved Korean folk song and the two countries? national anthems. The concert would have had even more significance if it could have celebrated continuing progress toward shuttering North Korea?s nuclear weapons program. That effort unfortunately has stalled, and the fault ? at least this time ? is undeniably Pyongyang?s. It would take a serious diplomatic push by the Bush administration and the leaders of China, Russia, Japan and South Korea to ensure that it does not fall apart. North Korea agreed last year to disable its Yongbyon nuclear reactor and produce a ?complete and correct? accounting of all its...

Mismanagement not energy crisis, says nuke society
2008-02-24 12:23:00 Academics joined forces Saturday to oppose a plan to build a "dangerous" nuclear power plant, dismissing the government's claim Indonesia is facing an energy crisis. At a gathering at the Driyarkara Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Central Jakarta, they said "mismanagement and incorrect energy policy" was what had actually occurred. They demanded that the government cancel a plan to construct a nuclear power plant on the Muria Peninsula in Central Java, saying it was too risky and that Indonesia wasn't ready yet."Indonesia has other alternative energy sources, such as geothermal and tide flows. Why doesn't the government develop these instead of building such a high-risk nuclear plant?" said group member Sonny Keraf, who is a former state minister for the environment.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

News-Dallas Business Journal Says Duke Nuke Em Forever Will Be Released Thi
2008-02-10 03:20:00 Dallas Business Journal, a Texan local paper ran a story with the headline flatly saying, “Duke Nukem Forever confirmed for 2008, coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3.” The article quoted 3D Realms president Scott Miller as saying the game would not only be released by the end of the year, but would be arriving on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in addition to the PC. “We may miss the mark by a month or two, but I feel very confident that we’re on target this time,” Miller was quoted as saying. As for 3D Realms’ console plans, the Dallas Business Journal quoted an e-mail from Miller saying, “Hitting the big three makes the most sense (PC, PS3, 360).” (Emphasis added.) However, following a report on Shacknews saying DNF’s release date had not been confirmed by 3D Realms, the Dallas Business Journal quickly adjusted its initial article–and gave it a much less authoritative tone. “An earlier version of this story said 3D ...

US intelligence says Pak nuke weapons are vulnerable
2008-02-06 10:34:00 The political turmoil in Pakistan has not seriously threatened the military’s control of its nuclear weapons “but vulnerabilities exist,” United States intelligence has warned in a report delivered to Congress by its chief Mike McConnell. “We judge that the [Pakistan] army’s management of nuclear policy issues — to include physical security — has not been degraded by Pakistan’s political crisis,” the Daily Times quotes the report, as saying. The report also warned that Al Qaeda is improving the last key aspect of its ability to attack the US. McConnell claimed that Pakistan’s Tribal Areas were providing Al Qaeda “many of the advantages it once derived from its base in Afghanistan, though this was on a smaller and less secure scale. The intelligence chief also said that the Taliban has expanded its operations into previously peaceful areas of western Afghanistan and around the capital Kabul. (ANI)

Lack of Nuke Talk in Recent Dem Debates
2008-02-06 00:47:00 It seems Catherine Collins may have had a good point: the Democratic candidates for president have missed many an opportunity to discuss their positions on U.S. nuclear and nonproliferation policy in their past three debates. (To their credit, however, it's not as if the questions were asked and they chose to ignore them.) What Bush and Kerry agreed was the gravest threat to national security in 2004 - nuclear proliferation - has been largely absent from this year's debates, with the notable exception of almost 15 minute of coverage of nuclear terrorism in New Hampshire. 'If elected Democrats may revise Indo-US nuke deal'
2008-02-05 08:21:00 The Democratic Party may revise the much-touted Indo-US civil nuclear deal if it comes into power in America, according to a senior fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations of USA. Speaking at a session on “After Bush: The Collapse of Bipartisanship and the Implications for US Foreign Policy” organized by The Aspen Institute India here, Senior Fellow Charles Kupchan felt that the Democrats may go ahead with the deal, but may link it to India’s support on issues such as Iran. The next US President will be presiding over a deeply divided country, said Kupchan, adding that the President will take office with the most inauspicious set of geopolitical circumstances. He felt that the US foreign policy would be erratic during this period, as the US will be going through an inward looking phase. It will look towards other countries such as Europe and India to fill the void that the US will leave behind in many parts of the world, Kupchan add...
