CTA rides numbers game: Ridership up slightly overall, but rail rides rule
2011-06-10 14:00:00
After the first four months of 2011, CTA ridership has increased slightly over the same period of 2010, with rail riders accounting for the increase. Ridership through April was 169 million, almost 1 million rides better than last year, according to the April financial report. Rail ridership rose by 2.7 million rides, while bus rides dropped 1.9 million through April.Average weekday ridership rose by almost 1% compared to last year, while average Saturday ridership dropped by 0.15%. Sunday riders increased the most this year - almost 2.5%.So what does it all mean? I'll take a stab, and of course this is just a guess. The economy is a little better than last year, with more people working, and thus getting...

Facebook Decides Not To Share Addresses And Mobile Numbers..At Least For No
2011-01-19 11:25:00
Last week, Facebook committed another privacy faux pas – yes another. In an update on its developer blog Facebook announced that it would be making a user’s address and mobile phone number accessible to developers. While it did go on to clarify that this would not grant access to a friend’s information, it said that a developer would have to request for this information specifically through the ’standard’ mechanism. (Image Courtesy) While the social network believed that this would result in a more seamless user experience, where such data would be ready on the fly, there were plenty of reasons to be concerned. In a section of a post batting for this change InsideFacebook argued that sharing addresses would let ecommerce sites pre populate address fields and mobile numbers could be used to enhance communication with friends. It also suggested electronic business cards, text message notifications, discovery etc as possible applications of this sensitiv...

ABC World News Perpetuates WRONG 99er Numbers - WHY?
2011-01-17 18:41:00
Last night, ABC World News continued to perpetuate the WRONG 99er Numbers (quoting that 1.5 million spun by the DOL in June 2010) and I must ask - WHY?One might think that any publicity for our 99er cause is a good thing and I would agree up to a point. There is the old adage that: ?Sometimes bad help is WORSE than NO HELP at all.? This to me rings true in this instance. So why can?t the media get it right? Do they even want to reveal the correct number and further embarrass the current administration? Is risking the embarrassment of Obama?s inept cronies and the Sub-Par Congress more important than saving millions of American lives?Perhaps there is confusion in the term ?99ers? as most UI exhaustees average 67.33 weeks of benefits.99ers like Dawn Rayner in the video below are heros to the 99er Nation. They selflessly put their personal pain out for public display (and often ridicule) in order to further inform America about what Washington?s indifference and incompetence is doin...

Mega Millions shocker: Lost numbers win
2011-01-05 15:26:00
The odds of winning last night's $355 million Mega Millions jackpot was about 1 in 176 million.Turns out, there were two people who accomplished that - one in Idaho and one in Washington. But what were the odds of 4 of the 6 numbers matching the numbers immortalized by Lost's Hurley? It's so weird but true. You might remember the now-famous Lost numbers of 4, 8,15,16, 23 and 42. Last night's Mega Millions numbers were 4, 8, 15, 25, 47 and 42.Spooky!!And better yet, according to the Mega Millions pay table, if you played the Lost numbers you won $150 because you matched 4 of 6.The Lost ending is something we'll be talking about for years to come. Let the conspiracy theories...

The Winning Numbers Of Senator Carol Moseley Braun

Here are the real numbers.* In 1988 as State Representative, Braun won the City of Chicago in a contested primary with 78.4% of the Chicago vote* In 1992 as Cook County Recorder of Deeds, Braun won Chicago in a 3 way primary with 51.2% of the Chicago vote and then in the General Election she won the Chicago vote with 74.8% * In 1998, while she may have lost some votes from across the State, Braun WON the...
Sathya Sai Baba?s Gross Exaggerations of Puttaparthi Crowd Numbers
2010-11-20 23:25:00
Robert Priddy (he for much longer) and I can fairly claim a friendship with the late V.K. Narasimhan, who had been, before he retired to Puttaparthi, the legendary and courageous editor of a number of India's top newspapers, such as 'The Hindu' and 'The Indian Express' and 'The Deccan Herald'. We would regularly sit together in his humble quarters at Puttaparthi, and he also received me as a guest in the family home in Chennai. Not long before VKN died, he instructed the hospital staff to allow me, even though considerable restrictions had been placed on visitation rights, to visit him at the Sathya Sai Superspeciality Hospital at Puttaparthi. I had been editing his book on the great French Jesuit philosopher and palaeontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. I had seen a Priddy note in which he took to task a Sai Baba apologist who typified those many followers who reveal deep and repeated flaws of reasoning that are simply not acceptable in any proper discussion. He wrote to ...
Hear me roar in numbers too big to ignore
2010-11-01 13:00:00
I was writing about Mary Kassian presentation, "You've come a long way Baby!" from the '08 True Women's Conference.  Part Four I am going to breeze through quickly. Part One , Part Two, Part Three She used a good example of what Consciousness raising was.  That is where she left off the last time. Consciousness-raising was actually a political technique used by the revolutionary army of Mao Tse-tung. His slogan was, ?Speak bitterness to recall bitterness. Speak pain to recall pain.? To promote discord and instability in a village, his political revolutionaries would call the townswomen together and get them to talk about their hurts. ?Come tell me about the hurts that you've experienced.? So the women were encouraged to speak bitterness and pain, and the initial reluctance gave way to collective anger as woman after woman told stories of being raped by landlords, being sold as concubines, or physical abuse. As women vented their bitterness, they experience...

Obama in Negative Numbers EVEN in Illinois?
2010-09-29 22:26:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Public Policy Polling has released a poll of voters in President Obama's home state of Illinois. shockingly it shows that Obama has a 49% disapproval rating in Illinois. The Illinois poll we'll release this week won't do much to change the conventional wisdom on either the Senate or Gubernatorial race in the state but it does have one pretty surprising finding: Barack Obama's approval numbers have dropped into negative territory even with likely voters in his home state. 44% approve of the job he's doing while 49% say they disapprove. The polling firm also finds that independents have lost faith in The One. "Independents strongly disapprove of him with just 35% feeling he's doing a good...
