Sam Nunn
2007-08-22 17:01:00 There is some buzz that former Democratic Senator Sam Nunn is thinking about a third party bid for President. Apparently he is at least loosely alligned with the Unity 08 organization which is looking to put a candidate into the fray. Much like the third party runs of Ross Perot and Ralph Nader, it takes some serious work to get on the ballot in all 50 states. One would have to think that if someone like Nunn or Michael Bloomberg is going to make a bid, that the work should start fairly quickly. Bloomberg keeps denying that he is interested in a third party run, but Nunn has been flirting with it for years. If I was a betting man, I would bet that of the two, Nunn is much more likely than the more talked about Bloomberg, but that the most likely likely scenario would be that neither makes a run, which would open up the door for Ralph Nader's 264th run. I am guessing that a Sam Nunn run would be more harmful to the Democrats than Ralph Nader and more harmful than Michael Bloombe...

Uppalavanna : A contemporary Theri-Gatha Sojourn in a nunnery
2007-08-10 22:01:00 Uppalavanna : A contemporary Theri-Gatha Sojourn in a nunneryby Indeewara Thilakarathne and Ranga ChandrarathneUppalavanna, a film directed by Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne and produced by Milina Sumathipala, is woven around an eventful life of a girl, Upuli who entered the Buddhist order of nuns following the tragic events in her life; the killing of her husband by her father at Upuli's mother's funeral and subsequent imprisonment of her father.According to the pali cannon, Uppalavanna was the Buddhist nun famous for her psychic powers. However, the contemporary Uppalavanna is different in that she has, more or less, become the victim of the circumstances. The story unfolds with Upuli, a daughter of an aristocratic physician father, falling in love with the son of her teacher of dancing and marries her sweet heart against parent's wishes.Upuli's mother dies after a prolonged illness apparently precipitated by Upuli's out of caste marriage. On the day of the funeral, Upuli with her hus...

Beckett & Nunn: It?s okay to use the ?D? word again
2007-06-26 03:40:00 Friday it was the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons expert meeting in Geneva, Monday it?s the Carnegie Non-Proliferation Conference in Washington D.C. It?s a jet-set life, and I have the jetlag to prove it (cue: yawn, hair swish. Eat your heart out Paris Hilton). In disarmament and non-proliferation terms, the U.S. scene is a bit of a fish bowl. Viewed from the outside certain things in there can seem distorted, and from the inside the outside world is definitely distorted. So it?s useful from time to time to dunk one?s self into it to try to get a sense of what?s really going on, hence Carnegie. The last Carnegie Conference I attended was, I think, in 2002. At that time the U.S. was still reeling from the September 11 attacks and there was some uncertainty as to which direction the Bush Administration would go in arms control terms.A lot has changed in the intervening five years, but some things remain the same. The Carnegie Conference itself remains ? unsurprisingly ? over...
Tsogyal Shedrub Dargyeling Nunnery
2006-11-05 07:55:00 Penor Rinpoche established this nunnery as complementary to Namdrolling Monastery and probably this is the biggest nunnery in India. We were a bit hesitant in going inside the nunnery; a place which is sacred and also strictly women's only . There was a little boy selling vegetable infront of the main gate pretending to be the care taker of that nunnery. He eventually stopped us. Since hesitant, we were out of wit. Lavannya was the only woman in our group; so being an woman photographer she went inside to find out an opportunity for shoot, if any. Later on we were allowed to go inside and to take photographs. People were so friendly and co-operative that we were over-whelmed at their open-mindedness.[ This photograph has been shoot inside the kitchen of Tsogyal Shedrub Dargyeling Nunnery] |
