When The Oakland Athletics Had Playoff Success
2011-10-06 11:00:00
..and it came before Moneyball….and at the expense of the Blue Jays. With the release of the movie Moneyball there is more talk of Billy Beane’s lack of success in the playoffs. If we want to look at a successful Oakland club, we need look no further than the 1989 version. This was a …

Kings of the Hill: A Look at the Oakland Athletics
2008-03-19 06:07:00
The Oakland A's are always known for their young pitching. This off-season they once again went on a fire sale, leaving Joe Blanton as the team's ace. So who are the young hurlers expected to replace another generation of solid performers? Here ya go: Oakland Athletics Projected Rotation 1. Joe Blanton 2. Rich Harden 3. Chad Gaudin 4. In a move the likes of which the MLB has yet to see from Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Bean, the A’s have chosen to bow out of the 2008 race. They are rebuilding. It seems the Baltimore Orioles are now doing the same after years of signing veterans in order to put a decent team on ...
Ask the Experts: Oakland Athletics
2008-03-07 13:56:00
Our friends over at RotoProfessor interviewed Athletics beat writer Joe Stiglich. He really gave some great, in depth answers, so let?s get right back to business and see what he had to say.Question 1: How do you see the A?s setting up the first five spots in their batting order?Joe Stiglich: Well, the order for Thursday?s exhibition opener provided a glimpse into manager Bob Geren?s thinking, though he cautioned not to read too much into things this early. If I had to predict now, I would say 1. Travis Buck, 2. Mark Ellis, 3. Daric Barton, 4. Jack Cust, 5. Eric Chavez ? The A?s are big on the potential of Buck and Barton, which is why I think they?ll occupy two of the most important spots in the order. Buck is a smart hitter and has pretty decent speed on the bases. Geren is putting a lot of stock into Barton?s September performance, and Barton batted third in the exhibition opener. If Chavez is healthy to start the season, he could fit in at No. 3 also. Ellis has bounced all over ...

Reds Still Searching For A Starter
2007-12-17 05:20:00
John Fay writes of the Reds' continued search for a starting pitcher.  That's Wayne Krivsky's focus; his main limitation is that Jay Bruce is untouchable. The Reds couldn't get Dan Haren because they wouldn't give up young starter Johnny Cueto.  The focus remains on Erik Bedard; the Reds seem willing to offer Homer Bailey as a starting point.  Fay indicates that the Dodgers lead for Bedard, which is odd given their current six-deep rotation. I have a feeling the hot stove is going to turn to Joe Blanton now.  The Reds may be in the thick of it, especially if they'd give up Bailey for him.  What do you think, would that be a wise move? showad();
Odds And Ends: Inge, Gagne, Pavano
2007-12-09 16:53:00
Couple of findings around the Internets: Drew Sharp argues that Brandon Inge should stay with the Tigers. His argument is that Inge would still get 300 or so at bats and would be playing for a surefire contender. If he was to be traded, he likely wouldn't land with a team nearly as good. Plus, with some of the injury histories of current Tigers, it might be best for Inge to wait around for playing time. Though the Rangers were interested in Eric Gagne, they were only $6 million interested. For a one-year deal with an option, there was little chance of that happening. Gagne likely would have sooner accepted the Red Sox arbitration offer. Carl Pavano will accept a minor league assignment after the Yankees release him this week. They need 40-man roster spots for Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera. They've already released Bronson Sardinha to make room for Andy Pettitte. Monte Pool dislikes the idea of the A's signing Barry Bonds. He mentions what you'd expect: The trial, his health,...
D'Backs Still Searching For A Starter
2007-12-07 23:25:00
The D'Backs' loss of Livan Hernandez should become official today when he declines their offer of arbitration.  That leaves the team with a rotation of Brandon Webb, Randy Johnson, Doug Davis, and Micah Owings.  The Big Unit is a question mark, so a starter must be acquired. Back on November 15th, Nick Piecoro noted the team's interest in Matt Clement and Bartolo Colon.  But the Diamondbacks are sticking to their no bonuses/no escalator clauses mandate.  So that pair will probably look elsewhere. Hiroki Kuroda received a three-year offer and a pitch video featuring Randy Johnson.  He'll visit Arizona next week.  If he chooses Seattle, L.A., or Kansas City, the D'Backs will have to move on.  It's rumored that the Ms added a fourth year to their offer. The big name is Dan Haren.  Jack Magruder says Arizona's proposal included two of Carlos Gonzalez, Emilio Bonifacio, and Brett Anderson.  Magruder believes the A's are also seeking Ma...
Red Sox Interested In Haren, Sheets
2007-12-03 07:07:00
Interesting stuff from Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal.  McAdam says the Red Sox are eyeing Dan Haren and Ben Sheets as alternatives to Johan Santana. Haren, we knew about.  Sheets is an intriguing idea though.  Maybe the buzz on him will pick up this week.  Sheets will earn $11MM in 2008, tops among Brewers (Jeff Suppan's deal gets scary in '09).  Given Sheets' injury history and expiring contract, the price for him might be fairly reasonable (say, A.J. Burnett territory).  Sheets had a full no-trade clause for '07 and may only be traded to eight selected clubs in '08. showad();
Duchscherer To The Rotation?
2007-10-17 16:50:00
According to Buster Olney, the A's are thinking about moving 30 year-old Justin Duchscherer to the starting rotation.  Duke hasn't started a big league game since 2003 (he started 20 in the minors that year).  His 2007 season ended in July as he opted for surgery on his arthritic hip.  He's battled elbow, triceps, neck, and back problems in the past. Why is this relevant to rumor junkies?  Because even if Duchscherer and Rich Harden are health question marks, more starting pitching depth increases the chances of a Joe Blanton or even a Dan Haren trade this winter.  As I mentioned in my A's Needs and Luxuries post, Billy Beane's best attribute seems to be digging up underappreciated starters.  Beane could trade one of his front-end rotation guys for a shortstop, third baseman, and/or top pitching prospect.  Chin-Lung Hu and Andy LaRoche would be a sweet bounty.
Bonds For Cust?
2007-09-09 17:43:00
Scott Ostler has a suggestion in today's San Francisco Chronicle: some kind of Barry Bonds for Jack Cust trade.  How would this work, with Bonds becoming a free agent after the season?  Cust, meanwhile, is under Oakland's control for another five seasons or so. Cust has easily been the Athletics' most valuable hitter this year, despite spending April in the minors.  Bonds' season currently ranks 16th among all hitters for VORP even in only 458 plate appearances. The Giants have a chance to save $700,000 this year by keeping Bonds from reaching 525 plate appearances.  It'll probably go right down to the wire.  Preventing him from reaching the last incentive would seem petty, and could mark the end of Barry's long relationship with the team.  Problem is, no one can figure out another team that would have him.
Needs and Luxuries: Oakland Athletics
2007-09-04 05:56:00
Let's try a new feature here at MLBTR.  I'll start going through teams and identifying positions they need to fill as well as positions that might be considered surpluses.  For lack of a better name it'll be called Needs and Luxuries.  We'll begin with the A's. For each team I'm going to set up the roster as seen below.  I won't include backups for position players.  I won't go into the full pitching staffs to keep it simple.  C - Kurt Suzuki1B - Daric Barton/Dan Johnson2B - Mark Ellis/Donnie MurphySS - Bobby Crosby/Marco Scutaro3B - Eric ChavezLF - Travis BuckCF - Mark Kotsay/Chris Denorfia/Chris SnellingRF - Nick SwisherDH - Jack Cust SP - Dan HarenSP - Joe BlantonSP - Chad GaudinSP - Lenny DiNardoSP - Rich Harden/Dan Meyer/Colby Lewis/Dallas Braden Closer - Huston StreetSetup - Alan Embree/Justin Duchscherer Needs The A's are an interesting club in that they're trying to compete on a small-time payroll.  Realistically I could say ...
What's In Store For Oakland?
2007-08-31 22:48:00
Susan Slusser's recent article for the San Francisco Chronicle had some interesting rumor tidbits. The Dodgers see the Esteban Loaiza handover as something of a small gift from the A's.  The team's talked about sending someone to Oakland - Brett Tomko was mentioned - but ultimately Oakland moved Loaiza only for salary relief.  However, the goodwill between Ned Colletti and Billy Beane from the deal could result in positive offseason discussions about Joe Blanton.  The Dodgers could sweeten a Blanton package beyond what's necessary, in rememberance of the Loaiza gift. The Tigers haven't asked about Mike Piazza, and the Twins had only mild interest back in July.  But that might be one last salary the A's try to unload before tonight's trade deadline. Interesting thought from Buster Olney the other day - is it time to shop Eric Chavez?  His plus defense might play well in L.A., New York, or Boston.  Olney speculates that the A's might ask the Dodge...
Dodgers Interested In Loaiza
2007-08-28 16:38:00
According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Dodgers have "genuine interest" in Oakland starter Esteban Loaiza.  The 35 year-old righty has been excellent in two starts against the Blue Jays since coming off the DL. Loaiza was coming off a fine 34-start 2005 season for the Nationals when the A's signed him to a three year, $21MM pact. I wasn't high on the deal at the time, though it's more palatable given some of the starting pitching deals that followed. Loaiza pitched for Mexico in the WBC in March of '06.  He reached April with a marked decline in velocity, and the A's blamed his early struggles on the tournament.  Spasms in his non-throwing shoulder surfaced later that month.  On the first of May he hit the DL with a strained trapezius muscle. He returned in June to mediocre results, but his velocity had returned.  He snagged a DUI later that month, driving 120 mph in his Ferrari while drunk.  The incident prompted the A...

Olney: Dodgers, A's Still Talking Blanton
2007-07-31 20:37:00
ESPN just had Buster Olney on to say that the Joe Blanton to the Dodgers talks are still ongoing.  Rosenthal had indicated that the Dodgers' offer last night fell short. By the way, I changed the front page of this site to display 30 posts instead of 20, so that you can see everything I've written today just by scrolling.
Cubs Acquire Jason Kendall
2007-07-17 02:51:00
The Cubs made a deal tonight, sending catcher Rob Bowen and pitcher Jerry Blevins to the Athletics for Jason Kendall and cash. (ESPN keeps saying it was Sean Marshall going to Oakland, which is silly and not true). Kendall had a respectable .758 OPS in June, but his bat has been anemic otherwise.  But as signified by the questionable Michael Barrett trade, the Cubs are looking for defense at catcher. (Incidentally, Jim Hendry acquired Barrett from Beane in December of '03 for Damian Miller).  Kendall can certainly handle the pitching staff.  And it wouldn't be shocking to see him hit a little bit back in the NL; he rarely strikes out and knows how to draw a walk.  The Cubs didn't give up much here.  Bowen is a backup at best.  Blevins, a southpaw reliever, will turn 24 in September.  He's been dominant in 53 innings between High A and Double A, but he's not anyone's idea of a top prospect.  I like the move for the Cubs.  As for Oak...

A Look At Chad Gaudin
2007-07-02 01:04:00
One player who has not received much press here at RotoAuthority is Chad Gaudin.  After yesterday's fine performance yesterday against the Yankees, it's time for a look. First, some history on Gaudin.  The righty was drafted in the 34th round by the Devil Rays in 2001.  He was never a scouting favorite, as he's listed at 5'11", 165 pounds.  Gaudin typically works in the 88-92 range; he did touch 93 against the Yankees yesterday.  Gaudin started the '02 season as a middle reliever for Low A Charleston, but eventually cracked the rotation and had a fine season as a 19 year-old.  Gaudin was able to dominate High A the following season and earned a promotion to Double A after 14 starts.  His Double A debut was special: a seven-inning perfect game.  After only three starts at that level, Gaudin got the call by the Devil Rays.  He was still only 20 years old back in '03. The promotion to Lou Piniella's Tampa Bay club made Gaudin th...
Forgotten Trade Candidates
2007-06-29 05:27:00
Amidst all the Buehrle/Jacque rumors floating around this week, we've neglected to write about the many other players who could be traded in July.  Let's give a little press to three forgotten players who could be on the move. Kyle Lohse, SP, CIN - I was pretty high on Lohse after April, thinking he was about to go all Bronson Arroyo on the NL.  Good Bronson, that is.  But Lohse followed up his first four starts by going 2-10 with a 6.27 ERA and 4.4 K/9.  And that actually included a shutout against the Pirates.  It's hard to see how Lohse can help a pennant contender this year, but as a Boras client and impending free agent earning $4.2MM, Wayne Krivsky should dump him off somewhere.  OK, so now that I think about it, he's more of a DFA candidate than a trade candidate. Joe Kennedy, SP, OAK - Billy Beane might be able to move the 28 year-old southpaw and free agent-to-be for something useful.  Kennedy makes only $2.8MM and has an ERA under 4.&...
Royals' Bradley Trade Cancelled
2007-06-23 02:44:00
UPDATE: The trade of Bradley to the Royals has already fallen through.  Turns out Bradley had an oblique injury that neither team was aware of.  Maybe the GMs can still work something out, since Bradley could've been expected to have an oblique injury within a week or two anyway. According to ESPN, the Royals have acquired Milton Bradley from the A's for reliever Leo Nunez.  It's a surprising move for Kansas City. Nunez is a 23 year-old righty reliever.  He's been compared to Julian Tavarez.  He's got a decent hitter but his secondary pitches need work.  Nunez has been knocked around in 67 big league innings.  He's pitching well in Double A this year but A) he probably belongs in Triple A and B) his strikeout rate is poor. Bradley will presumably be the Royals' regular left fielder, at least until he finds his way back to the DL.  If Dayton Moore doesn't spin him off for something better than Nunez before the deadline, I don't get the...
A's Acquire Dee Brown
2007-05-31 18:29:00
It doesn't get much more minor than this, but the A's have made yet another move to bolster their outfield depth, grabbing Dee Brown from the D-Backs for cash.  I guess when you have a ton of minor league outfielders on the major league roster, you have to find somebody to man the position in Sacramento. What strikes me as odd, though, is that a few weeks ago the A's sent Charles Thomas to Milwaukee for catcher J.D. Closser.  Oakland did need the catching insurance, but in a depth-for-depth swap, you'd think that Billy Beane could convince Doug Melvin to take someone other than Thomas in exchange. BAPR Plus: Oakland Athletics
2007-03-24 21:25:00
As the season gets closer, we’re going around the league taking a look at which prospects have stood out during spring training and which have found they need some more seasoning. The next stop is the Oakland Athletics, which came into spring training knowing that few rookies had much of a chance to make an impact. In fact, one of the first columns of spring training in the Oakland Tribune highlighted the fact that the prospect pipeline in Oakland has slowed a bit with the next wave, led by Travis Barton, Kurt Suzuki and Travis Buck still about a year away. Who’s Hot: Lefty reliever Jay Marshall, a Rule 5 pick, has flown a little bit under the radar in Oakland’s clubhouse, but his 2.92 ERA in 12 innings (12 hits, 3 BB, 5 Ks) gives him a chance of still making the roster. Suzuki has shown every sign that he will be ready to step in when Jason Kendall’s contract expires at the end of the 2007 season. Suzuki has hit .400/.500/.538 in 16 at-bats while showing sol...
