Why, they went around wherever doing health work with Indians. Why did so many of these Indians have high blood pressure? I was dying to know. First came denial. Whites have HTN too, you know. The angry, suspicious and uncomfortable looks were already starting. Ok, but Indians have more. Way more. What?s it all about? The entire conversation was soon veiled in hostility, suspicion and out and out bad vibes.I finally got out of these idiots that the diabetes epidemic among these Indians was giving them HTN. Diabetes causes hypertension. How? It destroys your blood vessels by narrowing them. Narrow blood vessels gives you HTN. Why the diabete...

Vagal Blocking for Obesity Control (VBLOC), low power electrical signals t
2008-06-09 17:03:00 I have been getting many e-mails about a weight loss belt that reduces appetite and involves the vagus nerve. Is it true? Is it a scam or a joke? No, it is a real therapy that is being vigorously studied by researchers, scientists and medical device companies. It is called VBLOC Therapy and it literally blocks messages conveyed through the vagal nerve in the stomache. What is the function of the vagal nerve? The vagal nerves begin in the brain and extend to multiple organs and regions of the digestive system. Each vagus nerve provides direct two-way communication between the brain and the digestive system. Most importantly it gives the patient a satisfaction of hunger or fullness in the stomache. Here is a real life story about women named Heather:"I've actually been overweight all my life. As a child, I was always the bigger child in the class, and as I got older it progressed," said Heather. The mother of four says she's tried everything -- except gast...

Childhood Obesity
2008-06-03 03:26:00 Childhood obesity, a serious problem in the United States for the last 25 years, may have hit its peak. A report published in the May 28 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that the epidemic may have leveled off during the past eight years. Researchers say that the number of overweight children is still three times what it was back when I was a kid though (in the 1960s and 70s). This is interesting for a few reasons. It could mean that a certain percentage of the population of US children is simply immune to obesity. That’s one of my extremely non-scientific guesses, and was not suggested by any of the research. Researchers didn’t draw any conclusions from the data, but there will no doubt be much study. Is it possible that a segment of US citizens just eat right and exercise and teach their children to do the same? What are your thoughts?

Lifetime Medical Costs of Obesity Are Unlikely to Spur Obesity Prevention E
2008-05-30 12:31:00 Even with shorter life expectancies, the lifetime medical costs for obese individuals are greater than costs for non-obese individuals, but those costs are unlikely to spur obesity prevention efforts, according to a new study published by researchers at RTI International and Merck & Co. The study, published on-line in the journal Obesity, found that lifetime medical costs for moderately obese 20-year-olds range between $5,000 and $21,000 more than costs for normal weight individuals. For individuals with greater levels of obesity, the costs are higher, ranging from $15,000 to $29,000 more than for normal weight individuals. Obese White females had the highest lifetime medical costs for both groups. However, the authors note that these costs are unlikely to generate significant investments in obesity prevention efforts."Because individuals switch jobs every four to five years, employers are unlikely to reap the financial benefits of successful obesity interventions...

Rimonabant: Miracle Drug for Obesity
2008-05-29 19:53:00 Rimonabant decreases appetite, weight, and may cause some nausea, depression and anxiety. For weight control, and therefore its effects on obesity and incidence of diabetes/metabolic syndrome and ultimately the chance of decreasing heart disease in our ever expanding population, rimonabant or a drug like it may have some uses. The drug has been well tested for the past two years on men who have a waist circumference of greater than 40 inches and women who have a waist circumference of greater than 35 inches. This drug however may not ever come to this country due to the possibility that depressive side effects may lead to increased suicide (not the way we want to decrease weight in our population, or suits in our courtrooms).Unfortunately, doctors are left with few choices when suggesting weight reduction to overweight and obese patients. The current available drugs (orlistat and sibutramine) are actually very weak, and most have not been documented to keep weight off after one year....

Obesity in W.Va.
2008-05-23 14:39:00 While the number of overweight West Virginia 5th graders has grown this year, it's partly because the ranks in the heavier and more serious category of obese declined in that age group, The Associated Press reports.?It?s at least a move in the right direction,? Dr. William Neal, director of the CARDIAC Project, told AP health writer Tom Breen."The numbers are a rare glimmer of hope in the third-fattest state in the country, but isolating which factors are contributing to the drop in obesity may not be easy," Breen writes.
Title: The causes of obesity
2008-05-22 17:34:00 Obesity is caused by unhealthy eating combined with sustained lack of activity. If food gives you more calories than you burn, your body turns on the storage program and puts on fat. This is the basic idea behind obesity. Disorderly eating habits are the top reason why people becaome obese. With neither the time, nor the inclination to control one?s meals, it?s no wonder people get fat all over the world. Couple that with a sedentary lifestyle where most trips are taken by car and you got a health situation out of control. Genetics: Obesity can also be inherited from family members who suffered from it. If your family has a history of obesity, then you would do well to watch your weight. Advertisement: read more

Obesity ? a review
2008-05-22 17:31:00 Most people think that obesity goes no deeper than a less than fashionable look, but they are wrong. Obesity today is an epidemic, a disease spreading fast across both the industrialized world and emerging economies. Obesity means having too much fat on your body. First and foremost, obesity puts a strain on joints and bones that have to sustain more weight than before, which leads to arthritis in the long run. The weight also tends to make people less active, which, in turn, means more weight is put on. Advertisement: read more

OBESITY 2
2008-05-16 22:59:00 The dietary treatment of obesity constitutes our mainstay for successful therapy. It is crucial to maintain good nutritional balance with any diet chosen, especially limiting the calories sufficiently to lose weight. Crash diets should be discouraged, as a weight loss of 2-3 pounds weekly is quitesufficient for most obese patients to regain their healthful profile without looking like a ?dried prune.? I always emphasize the use of natural foods, such as fresh fruits, whole grain cereals, and vegetables. Modest limitations of salt intake helps prevent fluid retention. Avoid as much as possible all rich foods, such as gravies, sauces, salad dressings, and desserts containing muchsugar. Be sure to reduce fried foods, as fat contains 9 calories per gram compared with 4cal./gm, for most carbohydrates and proteins. For individuals finding it difficult to maintain a low calorie diet continuously, a fast one day a week using limited amounts of clear liquids is encouraging. Some find it more ...

OBESITY 1
2008-05-15 10:34:00 The single most prevalent metabolic disorder in countries where food supplies are abundant is obesity. A person is considered over weight if his weight exceeds the upper range of ideal weight for his body frame. He is considered obese if his weight exceeds by 15-20% his ideal weight. Obesity occurs when the caloric intake exceeds the energy requirement of the body for physical activity and growth, with resultant accumulation of fat. This excessive adipose tissue may be distributed generally over the body or may be localized. Hormones from the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and sex glands all play important roles in fat distribution. For the most part, obesity is preventable. Unfortunately, however, the follow-through of treatment for prolonged periods is usually difficult. Relapse becomes extremely common. The amount of body fat can be estimated from the measurement of skin fold thickness with calipers. Most commonly employed, however, are bathroom scales, and the commonly available tab...

Obesity In America Today
2008-05-08 04:21:00 The Americans tend to lead a fast-paced lifestyle so convenience foods and takeaways always seem like the best option. Its not. Obesity in America has risen more than anywhere else in the world but not only with adults, children are also suffering the same fate! If obesity is not tackled then all around the world will suffer, not just America. Some people in America suffer obesity through medical problems which is not fault of their own and cannot be helped but others are just far to lazy and eat far to much. Americans are taking the lead in obesity and no one seems to be doing anything about it except the medical research teams and endocrinologists who are trying to find ways to battle the bulge. With out the help of professionals it will be very hard for any obese person to loose weight, and they definitely need the support of their friends and family. In 2004, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ranked obesity as the number one health threat facing America and...

Getting Obesity Help
2008-05-08 04:20:00 Obesity help can come in many shapes and sizes. Family embers and friends can lodge their support by dieting with you or helping you to diet alone. Doctors can help by referring you to a nutritionist and prescribing you some appetite suppressants (also known as diet pills, be wary of them). Nutritionists will help you by coming up with a diet plan which you abide by and then concentrating on an exercise routine when you can manage one.Another new way to help people suffering from obesity is to perform surgical procedures such as extensive gastric bypass; where portions of the stomach are removed, gastric banding; placing what seems like an elastic band around your stomach, panniculectomy; removing pieces of stomach (also known as a tummy tuck). These are just some of the procedures available and are only for use in drastic times. Many people can loose weight without these operations and therefore do not need to put themselves through a lot of pain which is consistent with each of th...

Morbid Obesity Details
2008-05-08 04:18:00 Misbehaviour is bad but there is always a step worse isn?t there? Bland food is bad but again there is always a taste worse? So why should obesity be any different. There is obesity and then there is morbid obesity. Obesity is classed when you have a BMI (Body mass index) of 30, when you have a BMI of 40 then you are classed as an urgent morbidity risk; morbid obesity!Morbid obesity is a lot more serious than obesity although that itself is highly dangerous to your body?s health. Morbid obesity is when you are the stage where there is so much fat that your fat is starting to damage internal organs. In most cases weight gain is hereditary so once the problem is started there is very little plain will power can do about it and when you get to the morbidly obese stage then serious actions need to be taken!Taking action against morbid obesity needs to happen straight away, if not the implications could be fatal. You could always go on another diet but the results when you are morbidly o...
