2012-01-18 17:41:00 New York City-based non-profit, Healthy Kids In The Heights, is spearheading a campaign that will empower neighborhood parents to become leaders in healthy living. The Healthy Parents Fellowship program is dedicated to battling child obesity in the neighborhood of Washington Heights. Led by founder and health activist, Catarina Rivera, the initiative is currently seeking funding to jump start its goals of health and entrepreneur training for parents, publicity for the project, materials and supplies, and space for its work. Washington Heights ranks second-highest in the city for childhood obesity. The Healthy Parents Fellowship really wants to change this statistic by developing community leaders that will in turn, activate community awareness. You can help fund their cause here. Only 16 days left for them to reach their goal of $2500 USD.

Obesity:- Why Bigger Portions are Leading to Health Problems
2011-11-22 19:21:00 Worried about obesity but fancy a night out but why do they serve such huge food portions in restaurants? Maybe you’ve chosen go to a restaurant for a romantic meal for two for Valentines Day or some other special occasion? Well based on a recent survey you better watch out what you eat because it seems that the chef and restaurant owner won’t be on your behalf. They are encouraging you to eat more and consequently become even more obese! Let me explain, at a recent meeting of the obesity society it was found by it’s member and a team of researchers that the average meal consumed in a restaurant is between 2-4 times the recommended size of that suggested by nutritional and healthy eating and obesity experts. According to the researchers findings, chefs provide increasingly large — and sometimes unhealthy — portions because they believe consumers expect it. In fact customers will go to establishments which offer larger portions before those that offer more sensible portions...

Morbidly Obesity Law Suit First of Many?
2011-11-22 19:05:00 This article about morbid obesity was on a website called over-lawyered and I think you can guess from the title, what it is all about but it made me chuckle and I thought you might find it an eye opener. If you find that incredible read on to the end and see what the British are doing to combat the problem! The story begins Charles Olanyk was a morbidly obese man who weighed in at 460 pounds in 2001 at the age of 51. He was a very big guy and as a result of his morbid obesity he had several health problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, lack of mobility and other problems you would imagine associated with someone being that large. One day Charles Olanyk accidently stubbed his toe and subsequently decided to treat the injury himself with a heated pad, but probably due to his diabetes and the lack of sensation in his lower limbs, he somehow managed to inflict on himself, third degree burns. He then as a result of his injury, visted his Doctor, Dr Bookwater who had been treating him ...

Filling Up on Empty Calories Causes Childhood Obesity
2010-10-18 12:00:00 A recent study led by the U.S. National Cancer Institute concluded that almost 40% of childhood calorie consumption came from solid fat and foods with added sugars. The main culprits were soda, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, grain desserts, pizza and whole milk. Our first lady, Michelle Obama, has taken a leadership role in the fight against childhood obesity. She has introduced innovative school nutrition reform and taken on socially irresponsible food service companies, but it is up to every parent to educate and encourage their children to make healthier choices. Check out facts about the "Empty Food Culprits"....
Michele Obama's Anti-Obesity Campaign is About Making Union Pockets Fa
2010-08-10 13:36:00 I started this blog with the intent to write about local Chicago and Illinois issues that affect kids. So when I started it, I thought I'd be writing primarily about local decision makers making local decisions. However, the tentacles of the federal government keep interfering with our kids. One recent example of this is Michele Obama's supposed children anti-obesity campaign.CPS children will get a dosage of nutrition to the tune of at least an extra one billion spent on nutrition and well intended programs to feed poor children. That is on top of the already over $15 billion dollars spent by the federal government on children nutrition. This is just another example of Chicago Style Reform, which according to conservative blogger...

Could Your TV Remote Be Making You Ill?
2010-02-04 17:47:00 What on earth does it mean by this latest headline I bet you are more than a little bit intrigued.Well before you rush and throw your TV remote in the nearest trash can hold fire for just a second. This is not my crusade against TV controls but is about how sedentary (staying seated) we have all become and how it could be making us seriously ill. Now let me explain years ago (well probably about 25 or so to more correct) we didn't use to have remote controls for everything we had to do something which today is seen as really radical we had to get of our butts and change the TV channel. Now if you are under 30 or so that's pretty much an alien concept but it actually was just part of the exercise (and movement) we used to have in our daily routines. But now the majority of people work on their backside and when they get home they do much the same thing.
Guns Versus Obesity
2010-02-03 02:59:00 I certainly don?t want to be the preacher or the wag! I am simply another human being going about his business in order to provide for his family! As the Croatian second engineer talked I realised that perhaps my shades and tinted aspect does not help me to see much at all! He talked of billions of dollars being transported in containers from A-B, proceeds of drug and gun shipments and the laundering of money on AIG failing amounts ? all carried out by respectable shipping companies. Cocaine to America in cement bags, chemicals out to help the refining process. Japanese businessmen being stopped at European borders with Swedish GDP amounts in paper notes, all wrapped innocently like a packed lunch in a dinky wee briefcase and guys who are rich beyond belief who know they will not pass forty as the next strongman makes his mark (but the thrill is worth it)! It?s another world and perhaps he was enjoying his story-telling, perhaps it is for real and I have my rose-tinted shades on, it ...
Low-Carb Diet Effective in Lowering Blood Pressure
2010-01-26 11:55:00 A new study initiated by researchers at Veterans Affairs Medical Centre and Duke University Medical Centre, reveals that a low-carbohydrate diet is equally effective for weight loss as the weight loss drug orlistat, but in a surprising twist, a low-carbohydrate diet proved more advantageous in lowering blood pressure, as well than the weight-loss medicine.Researcher William S. Yancy, Jr., MD, an associate professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Centre, says, ?If people have high blood pressure and a weight problem, a low-carbohydrate diet might be a better option than a weight loss medication?.The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, involved 146 obese or overweight adults who were randomly segregated into two groups. Among them many were suffering from high blood pressure or diabetes.A low-carbohydrate was imposed on the first group while the second group received the weight loss drug orlistat thrice a day.The results revealed weight loss was similar in t...

Why, they went around wherever doing health work with Indians. Why did so many of these Indians have high blood pressure? I was dying to know. First came denial. Whites have HTN too, you know. The angry, suspicious and uncomfortable looks were already starting. Ok, but Indians have more. Way more. What?s it all about? The entire conversation was soon veiled in hostility, suspicion and out and out bad vibes.I finally got out of these idiots that the diabetes epidemic among these Indians was giving them HTN. Hour's exercise 'to lose weight'
2008-07-30 09:14:00 Women who want to lose weight - and keep it off - need to be exercising for almost an hour, five days a week, according to US experts. The University of Pittsburgh study found the 55-minute regime was the minimum needed to maintain a 10% drop in weight. Only a quarter of the 200 women in the study managed to lose this amount. A UK expert said it was clear that regular moderate exercise was the way to lose weight, and keep it off.Approximately two-thirds of adults in the UK are overweight or obese, with some estimates suggesting this could rise to nine in ten by 2050. Research points to a combination of exercise and calorie control as having the best chance of success in weight loss - although the majority of people who attempt these diets fail to keep the weight off. The latest research, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine journal, confirms that plenty of exercise is a key ingredient of success. The Pittsburgh researchers looked at a group of overweight and obese women ove...

Vagal Blocking for Obesity Control (VBLOC), low power electrical signals t
2008-06-09 17:03:00 I have been getting many e-mails about a weight loss belt that reduces appetite and involves the vagus nerve. Is it true? Is it a scam or a joke? No, it is a real therapy that is being vigorously studied by researchers, scientists and medical device companies. It is called VBLOC Therapy and it literally blocks messages conveyed through the vagal nerve in the stomache. What is the function of the vagal nerve? The vagal nerves begin in the brain and extend to multiple organs and regions of the digestive system. Each vagus nerve provides direct two-way communication between the brain and the digestive system. Most importantly it gives the patient a satisfaction of hunger or fullness in the stomache. Here is a real life story about women named Heather:"I've actually been overweight all my life. As a child, I was always the bigger child in the class, and as I got older it progressed," said Heather. The mother of four says she's tried everything -- except gast...

Childhood Obesity
2008-06-03 03:26:00 Childhood obesity, a serious problem in the United States for the last 25 years, may have hit its peak. A report published in the May 28 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that the epidemic may have leveled off during the past eight years. Researchers say that the number of overweight children is still three times what it was back when I was a kid though (in the 1960s and 70s). This is interesting for a few reasons. It could mean that a certain percentage of the population of US children is simply immune to obesity. That’s one of my extremely non-scientific guesses, and was not suggested by any of the research. Researchers didn’t draw any conclusions from the data, but there will no doubt be much study. Is it possible that a segment of US citizens just eat right and exercise and teach their children to do the same? What are your thoughts?

Lifetime Medical Costs of Obesity Are Unlikely to Spur Obesity Prevention E
2008-05-30 12:31:00 Even with shorter life expectancies, the lifetime medical costs for obese individuals are greater than costs for non-obese individuals, but those costs are unlikely to spur obesity prevention efforts, according to a new study published by researchers at RTI International and Merck & Co. The study, published on-line in the journal Obesity, found that lifetime medical costs for moderately obese 20-year-olds range between $5,000 and $21,000 more than costs for normal weight individuals. For individuals with greater levels of obesity, the costs are higher, ranging from $15,000 to $29,000 more than for normal weight individuals. Obese White females had the highest lifetime medical costs for both groups. However, the authors note that these costs are unlikely to generate significant investments in obesity prevention efforts."Because individuals switch jobs every four to five years, employers are unlikely to reap the financial benefits of successful obesity interventions...

Rimonabant: Miracle Drug for Obesity
2008-05-29 19:53:00 Rimonabant decreases appetite, weight, and may cause some nausea, depression and anxiety. For weight control, and therefore its effects on obesity and incidence of diabetes/metabolic syndrome and ultimately the chance of decreasing heart disease in our ever expanding population, rimonabant or a drug like it may have some uses. The drug has been well tested for the past two years on men who have a waist circumference of greater than 40 inches and women who have a waist circumference of greater than 35 inches. This drug however may not ever come to this country due to the possibility that depressive side effects may lead to increased suicide (not the way we want to decrease weight in our population, or suits in our courtrooms).Unfortunately, doctors are left with few choices when suggesting weight reduction to overweight and obese patients. The current available drugs (orlistat and sibutramine) are actually very weak, and most have not been documented to keep weight off after one year....

Obesity in W.Va.
2008-05-23 14:39:00 While the number of overweight West Virginia 5th graders has grown this year, it's partly because the ranks in the heavier and more serious category of obese declined in that age group, The Associated Press reports.?It?s at least a move in the right direction,? Dr. William Neal, director of the CARDIAC Project, told AP health writer Tom Breen."The numbers are a rare glimmer of hope in the third-fattest state in the country, but isolating which factors are contributing to the drop in obesity may not be easy," Breen writes. |
