Thinking Big Takes Audi From Obscure to Awesome
2009-02-03 00:44:00
Strategy to Stand Out While Others Scale Back Delivers Big for BrandSource: AdAgeCharlie Hughes drives an Audi. The veteran auto consultant is most closely associated with Mazda and Land Rover but now owns an A4. "It's becoming smart to show up in an Audi, and that was far less true two years ago," he said.Audi CMO Scott Keough Though Audi of America's sales slipped in 2008, they fell far less than those of competitors amid a calamitous year for the auto industry. Audi's brand awareness, brand opinion and buyer consideration are all up substantially in the past two years. During that time, the brand's gains in that all-important last measure outstripped those of BMW, Mercedes and Lexus. And for the first time in 28 years, Audi outsold Volvo in the U.S. last year. In short: Audi might be the hottest auto brand on the market right now.So how did the carmaker, which CMO Scott Keough admits has historically "been nichey and quirky and only a subset of a subset of a subset knew about...

The "Obscure Aartist"
2008-12-31 16:05:00
Before 2008 ends, in anticipatory celebration of an anniversary, I want to publish a paper I wrote in 1979 . ?Aart and Obscurism: First Arguments? outlines a view of art and art making informed by conceptual art and seeking to advance its tenets. Of necessity, this theory of art was sub-cultural and germinated outside of the established ?art world.? My personal position in the established art world at the time was that of ?outsider,? and that perception obviously colored the tone of my paper, which moves from accusatory statements about commercial galleries to an exposition of my theory concerning a mode of art practice I called ?aart.? My terminology reflects artwork made ?outside the realm of the prevalent system? without ?artistic validation? provided by the dealer-collector-museum hegemony. As contestable rhetoric, the paper is still a fair read, and re-reading it thirty years later, I am struck by a couple of revelations, one of which is that not all that much has changed in...

Hey, just because I'm a hardcore geek, doesn't mean I'm one-dimensional! When I'm not doing anything involving a brain, here's some little ways I like to keep myself - and others - busy. Think of them as psychological happy-slapping, or little ways to add to the world's surrealism. * Provoking people to ask me what my sign is, so I can say it's 'no parking'. In my astrology chart (which is just as valid as any other), the signs are: "lane ends merge left", "yield", "signal ahead", "school crossing", "four-way stop", "no stopping any time", "one-way", "speed limit 60", "no parking", "do not enter", "road closed ahead", and "road work ahead". You want to see my chart? * Whenever I see a commercial on TV with a phone number saying "operators are standing by", I like to call the number and ask, "Why won't your boss give you a chair so you can sit down?" * I like to sing the words to 'Amazing Grace' to the tune of 'Gilligan's Island'. Lost E-Mails Obscure 'Plame-gate'
2008-05-10 02:12:00
by Jason Leopold Earlier this week, the White House disclosed that it could not recover lost e-mails from emergency backup tapes for the period covering the invasion of Iraq and the U.S. failure to find Iraq’s alleged WMD. This new gap – from March 1, 2003, to May 23, 2003 – also may have wiped out evidence of how George W. Bush and his top aides reacted to the emerging criticism from former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson that the White House had sold the war using false claims about Iraq seeking uranium from Niger in Africa, an investigation by The Public Record has found. “It seems clear now that the e-mail backups are spotty and that there is no guarantee that there are backup tapes for all of [Executive Office of the President] during the period of concern, March 2003-October 2005,” said Meredith Fuchs, general counsel of George Washington University’s National Security Archive, one of two organizations suing the White House in hopes of forcing the administration t...

Obscure Linux Commands: Some of My Favorite Incantations
2008-03-13 13:11:00
A little random grimoire of my spiciest magic spells, which don't fit well anywhere else: emacs -batch -l myLispProgram.el What it does: It runs Emacs in batch mode to run whatever Lisp code you might have in "myLispProgram.el". Just like Python or CLisp, it will process the code, write its output, and quit - without starting up the editor. The output that would normally print in the minibuffer in Emacs will just dump to screen instead. True Lisp programmers will scoff, "So just run CLisp programs", but I've never had much use for getting deep into Lisp - I find that it's mainly handy to use the eLisp dialect for those few jobs that are too clumsy for Bash scripting. The most common situation is when I'm coding in another language and have to make a whole bunch of lines with small differences, such as processing frame files (numbered frame_00.png, frame_10.png, etc.) into an animation. convert image.jpg -resize XX% image.jpg What it does: It's the fastest way to r...

Some Obscure Tax Deductions You Might've Missed
2008-02-14 14:00:00
Have you already done your taxes? I'm actually waiting a bit. I read somewhere that you want to file sometime in late February or early March....less chance of getting audited. The early filers and later filers have a bigger chance of being snagged. But hey, if you have all your ducks in line and are organized, you shouldn't worry about that, right? So, I've got all my paperwork in a folder. I like to have all the W-2s, 1099s and that kind of paperwork on one side, and the paperwork backing up my deductions and credits on the other side. I list each company we should be getting a document from on the front of the folder on a sticky note, and check them off as they roll in. Don't forget that CD you might've closed early last year or any receipts you are planning on using as deductions. Get out your statement from your church, your Goodwill receipts and the like. That got me thinking, are there any new deductions this year? Are there some, as a military spouse, I should ...

Keep Your Obscure Niches Secret
2007-11-08 05:46:00
In my post about collaborating with others, The Money Post asked me which niche I was working in. I don’t mind that he asked. But the niche is obscure so I declined to tell him. If you’re working in an obscure niche, much of your advantage is being one of the few businesspeople in the niche. If too many people work in the niche, your profits will drop. Obscure niches are usually niches with a small market. These niches can’t financially support a lot of competitors. It is to your advantage not to let others know about these niches. The barrier to entry in online business is not a big one. It doesn’t take much to buy a domain name, build a site, and find someone to produce content to sell. Also, you can drive traffic pretty easily with pay per click (PPC). Many of the wealthy internet marketers will not give away their niches. I know of one guy who uses aliases when doing article marketing on Ezine Articles. He’s well-known in some internet ma...

Obscure but satisfying: quota and quotient
2007-10-26 19:38:00
An obscure solecism helped me finish the working week on a high note. One of our techies remarked in a feature that a number of otherwise similar vehicles "varied in their poshness quota". A rather clever phrase, I thought approvingly, and moved on. But something wasn't right. I looked again, reached for the OED and confirmed that he meant quotient, rather than quota.Which is the first time I recall that word dropping into the engine room. Small victories... but as subs and copy editors out there know, in the engine room that's all you can expect. Here's to the weekend!

Inspiration & Devotionals :: A Faith Unobscured
2007-10-09 10:00:00
Author: NewsFeeder Subject: A Faith UnobscuredPosted: Tue Oct 09, 2007 4:00 am (GMT -4) A Faith Unobscured Jill Carattini At a funeral service in 1742, two giants of the faith stood beside their mother's grave. John Wesley conducted the services; his brother Charles wrote the epitaph for the tombstone. In part, it read: A Christian here her flesh laid down, the cross exchanging for a crown. True daughter of affliction, she, inured to pain and misery... The Father then revealed his Son; him in the broken bread made known; She knew and felt her sins forgiven, and found the earnest of her heaven. Susanna Wesley was a woman her husband called "the best of mothers." Writing to his children, he described his wife as one they had to thank above all for "the wholesome and sweet motherly advice and counsel which she has often given you to fear God."(1) Determined that her children would know and love Christ, Susanna made sure that such...
Obscure Linux Commands: Cheating At Word Games
2007-09-25 02:25:00
Now, granted, cheating at word games won't make you very good at the word games. However, using practical problems from word games is an excellent opportunity to brush up on your Command-Line-Foo! There is no better exercise to master regexps. One thing you've probably found is that 99% of Linux distros have a file in /usr/share/dict/ which is called "words". True to Unix traditions, it's nothing but a plain text file of words, one per line, which is what the system uses for spell-checking. So, you're bumbling along doing a crossword puzzle, and you need to find a seven-letter word that begins with 'm', ends in 's', and has a 't' in the middle. Go get it, grep! ß grep "^m..t..s$" /usr/share/dict/words mantels mantles martyrs masters matters mentors misters mittens mortals mortars mottoes mouthes mutters mystics Blow by blow: ^ - The carat (shift-6) says "this is the beginning of the line". Without it, it would find all words like "fundamentals". $ - The dollar sign ...
Pink Floyd: Obscured By Clouds 1972
2007-09-03 01:50:00
Obscured By Clouds is a rock album by Pink Floyd based on their soundtrack for the french film La Vallée. The album reached #6 on the UK albums charts and #46 on the US album charts. At this point in their carrier, the band was not new to scoring movies. So when the band went into score the movie, they had a lot more experience and therefore produced a much finer product. The soundtrack works perfectly as a standalone album. The band was already working on Dark Side Of The Moon during this period, but production was interrupted when the band travelled to France to score the movie. Nick Mason refers to the project:"After the success of More, we had agreed to do another sound track for Barbet Schroeder. His new film was called La Vallée and we travelled over to France to record the music in the last week of February...We did the recording with the same method we had employed for More, following a rough cut of the film, using stopwatches for specific cues and creating interlinking musica...
