Patti Solis Doyle Joins Obama: NY Observer Says That's A "Fuck You" To Hill
2008-06-16 17:41:00 Patti Solis Doyle left the Hillary Clinton campaign in disgrace just a few months ago after loses in primaries and especially in money. Reportedly scapegoated for the Clinton's overall poor performance in the early stages of the campaign, Patti Solis Doyle has been hired by Obama for America with the title of "Chief Of Staff To The Vice Presidential Candidate", a move that some say is a slap to the Clinton campaign and the NY Observer says that move is a "Fuck You" to Senator Clinton.I'm not one to agree with that view. I think the Obama campaign knows it needs the Clintons, but also their judgement is tempered by the fact that the Clinton political power has been damaged, and perhaps irreparably. I think too much is written into that "fuck you" view, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it may be the opposite signal and that in a need to come together, perhaps it's best that the two work together. Hell, the source is a donor who may know less than I or you or an...

Indonesia mismanaged its oil potentials, observer
2008-05-11 03:43:00 Indonesia could have reaped great profits from the current high world crude oil prices and would not have plunged into its present difficult situation if it had managed its oil potentials well, oil industry observer Dr Kurtubi said.He said Indonesia`s failure to manage its oil wealth properly in the past few years had caused its crude oil production to decline and led to its dependence on oil imports which had now placed the country in a difficult position.Dr Kurtubi made the remarks in an interactive discussion on fuel oil prices which was organized by the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) here Saturday. Kurubi said that as a result of the improper management of the country`s oil potentials, the government was now facing difficulties in maintaining the state budget amid the sky-rocketing of crude prices in the world market. "Indonesia could have reaped huge profits from the world crude price hikes but mismanagement of our oil potentials has caused us to face difficultie...

Fuel oil price increase by 28.7 pct too high: Observer
2008-04-30 13:37:00 An average increase of 28.7 percent in fuel oil prices is too high and could cause panic among the people, economic observer Tony A Prasetyantono said here on Wednesday. He said he agreed with the government`s intention to increase fuel oil prices based on its need to reduce its fuel oil subsidy but before doing it the government should also take into account the people`s objective and psychological conditions. "I think, psychologically, a logical increase should not exceed Rp1,000 per liter because it would be objectively acceptable to the people," he said. The finance ministry has undertaken a study on increasing subsidized fuel oil prices by an average of 28.7 percent in June 2008. The plan was made in response to the upward trend in the crude oil price in the world market which had reached US$120 per barrel, according to a finance ministry source on Tuesday night. It was said that the price of premium gasoline would be raised from Rp4,500 to Rp6,000 per liter, diesel ...
Media Alert: Flexible Friends - The Observer, The Independent, And The Myth
2008-04-30 06:45:00 by Media Lens A Vain Search For Principle In a BBC interview in 1996, Andrew Marr, then of the Independent, described the spectrum of media available to the British public: We have a press which has, it seems to me, a relatively wide range of views - there is a pretty small c conservative majority, but there are left-wing papers, and there is a pretty large offering of views running from the far right to the far left, for those who want them. The left-wing papers Marr had in mind were the Guardian, the Observer, the Independent and the Independent on Sunday. It is interesting to consider Marrs comments in light of the April 10 announcement that Roger Alton, formerly editor of the Observer, will become editor of the Independent in June. Alton resigned from the Observer last year after rumours of a civil war with the Guardian. There were also allegations that, in 2002, the Observer had suppressed important testimony on Iraqs alleged weapons of mass destruction (see ...

US election observer group not to monitor Feb 18 polls over violence concer
2008-02-03 12:22:00 The US-based International Republican Institute that was planning to monitor the February 18 parliamentary elections in Pakistan has cancelled its involvement over election-day security concerns. “We don’t believe the security environment is such that we could do the things we’d like to do,” the Washington Post quoted, Thomas E Garrett, the International Republican Institute’s election expert on Pakistan, as saying. The IRI has said that due to the fear of potential suicide bombings and general acts of violence, the group won’t be able to monitor the vote or evaluate the outcome with credibility. According to the Washington Post, after the IRI’s departure international presence in Pakistan general elections has reduced to 100 observers from the European Union, a few foreign politicians, and “small teams pulled together from embassies in Islamabad”. “There may be only slightly more than one obs...

Niney The Observer Presents King Tubby - Bring The Dub Come
2007-12-27 19:24:00 Niney The Observer Presents King Tubby - Bring The Dub ComeLabel: HeartbeatRecord date: 197XAlbum style: Dub, Lee Library, Reggae, Roots, TubbyAround 1969 Kingston-based producers started to issue singles with instrumental "versions" on the flipside of vocal releases, which were actually the basic riddim tracks. To these "versions" one could add further instrumentation or deejay accompaniment. Within a year the inclusion of instrumental versions on the flipside was common practice among the majority of Jamaica's producers. In 1971 the first real Dub recordings began to appear, with The Hippy Boys' "Voo Doo" - the version to Little Roy's "Hard Fighter", which was mixed by Lynford Anderson a.k.a. Andy Capp - now widely acknowledged to be the first recording in the genre. But it was pioneering sound engineer and sound system operator Osbourne Ruddock aka King Tubby who did more than any other to popularize and develop the sound. He explored the possibilities of sound from his small ...
Niney The Observer - Sledgehammer Dub (in the Streets of Jamaica)
2007-12-27 19:20:00 Niney The Observer - Sledgehammer Dub (in the Streets of Jamaica)Label: MotionRecord date: 1977Album style: Dub, Lee Library, Reggae, RootsThis classic dub album was originally released (only in Jamaica) in 77 in very limited numbers (300) on the Observer label and has up to now been one of the holy grails for collectors of dub reggae. It compiled alternative mixes of Dennis Brown single B sides (from 75/76) that King Tubby had made as exclusive dubplates for his Home Town Hi-Fi sound system. Heavier than the original single B sides they combine to make up an awesome dub album. The bonus tracks all maintain the Dennis Brown link, three of them being B side dubs of Dennis Brown songs, the fourth (CD only) is an exclusive, taken from dubplate. David Katz extensive sleevenotes (12 page booklet) include an exclusive interview with Niney and detail his life and times in more depth than any previous Niney release.NINEY QUOTES (from interview for sleevenotes 2002):'Tubbys is the one that ...

2007-11-25 08:11:00 So for the second week in a row, the 49ers go up against an NFC West opponent that they managed to beat earlier in the year, the Arizona Cardinals. We can all harken back to Week 1, when the season was still so full of promise, and Alex Smith and the 49ers engineering a heroic come-from-behind victory against the team that had beaten them twice the year before. 49ers Observer :: Win the West: Week 11 predictions
2007-11-18 08:11:00 I’m seriously considering changing the name of this contest. First of all, the 49ers no longer have any hope of winning the West. And secondly, this division is so bad that in the end, no one will have won it. There will simply be one team who lost it less than the other three teams. ...
Observer and Guardian disagree on homeophobia
2007-11-13 14:32:00 In the Guardian, novelist Jeanette Winterson soberly tackles the tricky subject of homeophobia – the fear and loathing of homeopathy, that is. She relates how while staying at a remote cottage in Cornwall she ran a temperature of 102, had spots on her throat, was delirious. And she had a book to finish. Her “desperate” publisher suggested she call the homeopath Hilary Fairclough who sent round a remedy called Lachesis, made from snake venom. “Four hours later I had no symptoms whatsoever.” (I believe this piece first appeared in The Times in 2004). She finishes: “We should be careful of dismissing the testimony of millions who say the remedies have worked for them.”For once I have no firm view to offer – by temperament I am too impatient for results. And homeopathy, by my understanding, works slowly and subtly, if at all (Winterson’s rapid symptomatic relief surprises me). Zap me with the chemicals and I’m all yours (reluctantly). But it intrigues me that the pie...

International Observer - Heard (2007)
2007-11-04 13:41:00 The perpetrator of the International Observer experience is keyboardist, songwriter and producer Tom Bailey. Following the extraordinary success of his post-punk synth-pop group The Thompson Twins, production and writing work for the likes of Deborah Harry, and the ambient techno of his Babble project, Tom Bailey was lured to the exotic climes of Aotearoa/New Zealand. New Zealand culture has a long history of appreciation for reggae and dub, along with more recent blends like hip hop. this, along with NZ's balmy climes, created the perfect inspiration for Tom's exploration of the dub artform he had deeply loved since the seething post-punk infatuation of the music in the late 70s. together with sparring partner Rakai, Tom initiated International Observer, a sound system that quietly infiltrated various Auckland events over years, creating a legendary reputation for marathon five-hour sets of exquisitely-crafted slo-mo dubscapes. Early in 2002, having amassed enough material ...
