Barrons Is The Latest Old Media Company To Be Proven Obsolete
2008-05-18 19:15:00 Remember about a month ago when I wrote those 2 posts (HERE and HERE) about the sketchy pig farmers over at Agfeed Industries (FEED)? Their two financing deals, after a flurry of too-good-to-be-wholly-accurate- press releases, set off my probable pump alert and even though I wasn’t playing the stock, I felt the need to warn investors about how the smallcap capital raising game works—basically you spend thousands on PR, giveaway a few percentage points to encourage scummy peddlers (better knowns as brokerage firms) do financings, schedule a bunch of PRs to paint the rosiest picture possible and then raise capital for your crappy biz at inflated prices, preying on investors’ greed as your stock is manipulated to surge higher, making these investors believe they are getting in on the ground floor of some amazing story. It’s ugly and I’m not gonna make too many friends telling everyone about it, but that’s how the game works. Now, only a month late and $129 short (their subs...

Get ready for the "SIXAXIS" to be obsolete!
2008-04-03 05:26:00 Well guys here's some quite embarrassing for all of you people that rushed out this last year and bought a PS3, and I feel really bad for those of you that bought extra controllers... Why? Because Sony's "best controller ever" and its "cutting edge design" are ... O B S O L E T E. Or they will be as of April 15th in the US as the SIXAXIS is obsoleted and the DualShock 3 hits the market and starts shipping with PS3's. Apparently the logo above will be gracing Rumble enabled games from now on and many older games will start releasing updates to enable rumbling. April 15th will see the DS3 go on sale throughout the US for $55. My big question is ... didn't Sony's exec's discount the lack of rumble in the SIXAXIS as "them strategically removing technology that was inherently ... 'last generation'" ... No instead of them admitting it was because they wouldn't fork out the cash to pay for the patents until they realized how much people missed rumble in their games, especial...

Saluting the Obsolete Skills of Tech Some More
2008-03-05 10:24:00 Continuing from the first half of the list, here's some more ruminations on the obsolete tech hall of fame... PDP-11 assembler - The PDPs may, indeed, be long gone, but for those of you who still want to keep your hand in in case they ever come back, the SIMH project can emulate PDPs, and a mess of other iron dinosaurs. SIMH runs on Linux and every other computer in the galaxy - even Windows! I have a copy of it on my boxen, and I'm sure I'd be hacking away on it if I had clue one what I was doing. I've learned the PDP-11 'help' command, though! Playing BBS door games - Oh, yeah? Get DOSBox to run them on, and download some door games right here! DOSBox is ported to Linux and every other system in existence - even Windows! You might have to finagle some bogus BBS configuration files to get some of them working, however. I got this 8-way slot door game running, for instance. In all its ANSI glory. Waddaya thinka me nooooow? Playing arcade games - Yeah, so go get XMAME and...
Saluting the Obsolete Skills of Tech
2008-03-04 16:10:00 http://obsoleteskills.com/Skill-s/Skills People said "It's about time." when the idea came up to collect one list in one place of all the skills that are now obsolete. But after a few months, the Obsolete Skills Wiki has obviously been hit by a few trolls. "fdisk" is obsolete? I use it every week! Lisp??? Not dead at all; in fact I believe that Lisp is still waiting for its day in the sun, which lies in the future. All it takes right now is for one Ruby fanboy to say, "Do they have anything like Ruby, only more elegant?" and bam! Lisp would be hotter than Obama. Other entries are too obvious. Yes, we know churning butter is obsolete; but isn't the purpose of this list to note things that have changed since the dawn of the Information Age? Nevertheless, the list affords plenty of opportunity for recalling days of technology gone by... Adjusting rabbit ears on top of a TV - That I don't miss so much, but I do miss having that one person around the house who couldn't stand too c...

Are Hard Disks Going To Be Obsolete in a Few Years From Now?
2008-01-19 00:06:00 Hard drives have ruled the roost in the world of computers and laptops for the last few decades. They enjoy complete dominance as primary data storage devices and have now even begun to be used in such consumer electronics devices as DVD players and mobile phones. There has been no technology until now that was able to come close to hard drives in terms of data storage capacity, reliability, functionality and cost. The commonly available hard drives have capacities of 80 GB, 120 GB and 160 GB. This is a huge amount of storage space available to a typical computer user. Hard drives are also quite cost-effective and easily affordable by anyone. However, they have some drawbacks. The drives are based on decades-old technology and their basic design has remained more or less the same over the years. They are notorious for crashing unexpectedly, leaving the users staring at the prospects of total data loss. Also, hard drives are mechanical and have many moving parts which undergo tremendou...

News : The rush to render the iPhone obsolete
2008-01-03 16:32:00 No list of trends would be complete without a mention of Apple's iPhone, a device that many handset manufacturers will be looking to beat in 2008 in order to attract a consumer that is ever more interested in advanced wireless services. Many of those devices will debut at CES next week.Since its launch in June of last year, iPhone sales have nearly topped 2 million. While the closed nature of Apple's business model has kept the device out of the hands of many consumers, the iPhone no doubt has sparked a revolution in the entire mobile phone industry.Manufacturers have been quick to jump on the bandwagon and add devices to their portfolios that mimic the most sought-after features of the iPhone. Even software developers have seized opportunities that the phone's release have created. This rush of competition will keep Apple on its toes in 2008, in a race to stay one step ahead of the industry which is hungry for a piece of the iPhone pie. It is this high-stakes game of cat-and-mous...

Desktops & Laptops Soon to Be Obsolete?
2007-12-13 14:52:00 Paul Higgins of Business Day writing for theage.com.au offers his opinion of where mobile computing is heading, and we think he's right on the money. There's been a lot of discussions surrounding MID's or mobile Internet devices, and Higgins seems to think they will be even smaller than what we might have thought in the past. "A recent story in Wired describes how researchers at Arizona State University are producing computing memory that is one-tenth the cost of flash memory (the predominant memory system in current mobile devices) and 1000 times as energy efficient. A thumb drive using the technology could store a terabyte". You can read the full article here. While it may be difficult for some to imagine a landscape without clunky desktop and laptop computers, with memory and cpu chip set technology continuing to shrink in size, it's inevitable. Obviously it will have to be affordable enough for the masses, but that to is guaranteed to happen. 10 years ago I paid $1000 ...

New brush could make toothpaste obsolete
2007-11-25 12:46:00 Toss the toothpaste. The future of oral hygiene is solar.University of Saskatchewan dentistry professor emeritus Dr. Kunio Komiyama and his colleague Dr. Gerry Uswak are recruiting 120 teens willing to brush with a prototype light-powered toothbrush and sit in a dentist's chair for a few extra inspections. The manufacturer, the Shiken company of Japan, is paying the researchers to investigate whether the brush, which causes a chemical reaction in the mouth, does a better job of eliminating plaque and bacteria than a conventional toothbrush.Komiyama's first model, which was described 15 years ago in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, contained a titanium dioxide rod in the neck of the brush, just below the nylon bristles. It works when light shines on the wet rod, releasing electrons. Those electrons react with acid in the mouth, which helps break down plaque. No toothpaste is required. Now Komiyama's back with a newer model, the Soladey-J3X, which he says packs twice the chemi...

Bet365 makes offline betting obsolete?
2007-10-20 02:42:00 Theirs some wicked online betting sites with huge variations of the things they offer but to date theirs only one that combines all the biggies such as an online casino, sportsbook and an entire interactive games section. Theirs a huge amount of games and styles that just make it kind of insane for a one stop website, I mean some other sites have nailed one or the other area of online gaming but this is pretty much the first that i've seen that's managed to properly tackle multiple fields of gaming from 1 network. My favorite is their online poker that really is one of the most impressive poker games i've played in a while. The fact that it's part of a respected site that is certified and secure. The problem with a lot of other sites is the fact that they're known to in some way to cheat their customers. The other part that makes bet365 different is their one wallet system that makes switching from their sports book to the casino and back again all with a one stop manageable ...

Make Assumptions Obsolete by Communicating
2007-09-14 15:00:00 For instrumental music while reading, choose: hi-fi (broadband) or low-fi. We assume because we don’t know. We don’t know because we don’t ask. We don’t ask because we act as if we already know. Or, we are insecure and don’t want to appear stupid. So we make an assumption. Then we forget it is merely something we made up because we don’t know the truth, and we behave as if it’s a fact. If the other people in your life have a similar relationship with assumptions, drama abounds. Everyone acts as if their actions and reactions are based on reality when in fact, so many personal interactions are based on arbitrary fabrications, wishful thinking and fantasy. We have a name for this problem-prone, sloppy thinking: assumptions. Why do we do it? Mental laziness. With enough information, assumptions are unnecessary. When we know the real facts, we don’t have to make them up. How do we learn the facts? Ask questions. “He who fails to ques...

DX10 hardware is already obsolete?
2007-08-14 01:58:00 REPRESENTATIVES from the almighty Vole have been speaking at Siggraph over the last few days, and what they've said hasn't exactly lowered the blood pressure of many attendees.Microsoft were there to espouse the greatness of DirectX 10.1, the next revision to the DX graphics spec, which is due to arrive with Windows Vista SP1.Here's the thing. DX10 hardware - such as the GeForce 8800 or the Radeon 2900 - won't work with the new 10.1 features. The 0.1 revision requires completely new hardware for support, thus royally cheesing off many gamers who paid top whack for their new hardware over the last few months on the basis of future game compatibility. But these gamers shouldn't fret too much - 10.1 adds virtually nothing that they will care about and, more to the point, adds almost nothing that developers are likely to care about. The spec revision basically makes a number of things that are optional in DX10 compulsory under the new standard - such as 32-bit floating point filteri...

1031 Obsolete?!
2007-07-23 20:54:00 THE ESCROW PROGRAM IS A SUPERIOR VEHICLE FOR REAL ESTATE INVESTING WHEN COMPARED TO THE OUT DATED 1031 EXCHANGE In this edition of the Real Estate Revolution, we will discuss why the Escrow Program has rendered real estate 1031 exchanges obsolete. 1031 Exchange History: In the summer of 1990, the I.R.S. laid out in detail the procedure for turning a sale and purchase type transaction into an exchange that came to be know as a 1031 Exchange. These new rules allowed owners of certain types of like kind Real and Personal property to sell their property and buy other like kind property without immediately paying the Capital Gains Tax. The IRS Classification Of Real Estate For 1031 Exchanges: The classification of properties to be exchanged determines if the property qualifies for Section 1031 treatment. The last two types of property shown below qualify for Section 1031-tax deferral, but the first one doesn't. ? ? Property held primarily for sale. ("Flipping" Property)? ? Property held...
The Government lies and the constitution is obsolete.. well duh.
2007-07-21 10:12:00 "The government has to lie to the public for one simple reason: The public is generally dumb." John Q - BlackmansdiaryI agree with this statement. Before you go into defensive mode ask yourself on question: take a mental inventory of your circle of friends and acquaintances, how many of them would you trust with a secret that could kill everyone, including yourself? Well i don't know about you but my list of people i could trust with a secret like that was very, very small. I am not saying that i agree with the fact that the government lies, and regularly, i am just saying that i understand one of the reason they may do it. What if you woke up one morning and the television news informed you that the world would end in 72 hours, how many people who have never had a Cadillac or sexy blond would refrain from just going out and taking one? Scary thought right? but one i am sure the government has pondered long and repeatedly. Nothing is as cut and dried as ...

HDTV obsolete
2007-06-16 03:48:00 NHK shows off some live 7680 x 4320 "Super Hi-Vision" TV in JapanPosted Nov 5th 2005 3:30PM by Paul MillerFiled under: HDTV, Home Entertainment This is totally not replacing HDTV for a good million years or so, but NHK of Japan has demoed some "Super Hi-Vision" TV running at 7680 x 4320 — 16 times the resolution of that lame old 1080i your grandparents are talking about. The demo involved a live feed from a couple of custom built cameras based around 8 megapixel CCDs, with their 24Gbps signal being chopped into 16 HD signals and sent 161 miles over a fiber optic network to the the demo site at the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Japan. So the good news is that they can rock the live TV with this technology, but the gooder news is that this isn't even out of the labs yet, so that brand spanking new HDTV of yours won't be going out of style anytime soon.
