Octavio Dotel Yet To Sign
2008-01-18 15:29:00 UPDATE, 1-18-08 at 2:27pm: Scott Merkin at MLB.com talked to Dotel's agent, who will only say that Dotel is in the mix. No deal has been reached. Apparently six teams are in "active discussions" about Dotel. FROM 1-18-08 at 7:15am: According to Impacto Deportivo, the White Sox have signed Octavio Dotel to a two-year, $11MM deal. The 32 year-old reliever had a 4.11 ERA and 12.0 K/9 in 30.2 innings last year. The White Sox have decided to buy a bullpen this year, always a risky move. Dotel can still bring it; it's just a question of health. He dealt with shoulder and oblique strains last year, and had Tommy John in June of '05. The White Sox seem to have a good medical staff, and they'll be crucial in making this signing pay off.

Mets Pitching Plans
2007-12-31 18:43:00 Many readers have written me asking what the Mets are going to do to upgrade their starting rotation. Matthew Cerrone as a man in the know, and he's written a summary over at MetsBlog. Cerrone senses nothing much cooking on the Johan Santana front, yet the Mets remain "oddly confident." Cerrone believes the Mets will probably sign one rehabber - Freddy Garcia or Bartolo Colon. He says reviews on Colon in the Dominican Winter League have been positive. Omar Minaya knows Colon well, having traded the farm for him as GM of the Expos. Garcia may be ready to pitch around June. Coming off a frayed rotator cuff and labrum he may not contribute much in 2008. Bullpen wise, Cerrone says Octavio Dotel is on the radar, especially if Aaron Heilman is traded. There's a lack of buzz with the Mets for Kyle Lohse, Livan Hernandez, and Joe Blanton currently. showad();

Tigers Offer Contract To Hawkins?
2007-11-29 06:34:00 Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press writes that the Tigers have interest in free agent reliever LaTroy Hawkins and may have even offered him a multiyear contract. Among free agent relievers the Tigers have previously expressed interest in Octavio Dotel. Dotel is 32 and a health risk, but he still has that huge strikeout rate. I'm guessing he wants at least two years, $12MM. Hawkins is 35 and healthy; he did somehow manage to post a 3.42 ERA in 55 innings with the Rockies. That's not easy to do. But his 1.8 K/BB and 4.7 K/9 rates were not impressive. He might be after a two-year, $8MM deal. showad();

Mets Interested In Santana, Dotel, Chacon
2007-11-27 16:52:00 The New York Post's Mark Hale has an update for us regarding the Mets' pursuit of pitching. Even though the Wilpons haven't made any declarations to the media, the Mets are showing interest in Johan Santana. Hale notes a couple of stipulations: David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran won't be dealt, and the Mets would want a 72-hour negotiation window. I don't think anyone expected anything different on either point. The Twins could certainly use an influx of outfield talent, and the Mets have it. Octavio Dotel is one free agent on the Mets' radar, though we've known that since the 16th. "On the radar" is getting overused...I need an alternative. Dotel would be fine with a setup role, though I'm guessing it would take two years and $12MM or more. Dotel came up through the Mets' system as a starter, and was traded to the Astros in '99 in the Mike Hampton/Derek Bell/Roger Cedeno deal. The Tigers and Royals may also be ...

Frank Wren Chat At MLB.com
2007-11-15 23:40:00 Braves GM Frank Wren chatted with fans today at MLB.com. A hot stove summary is below. Wren is working on various short-term options for center field, as he does not want to block his two center field prospects. Rumors that the Braves would sign Mike Lowell or trade for Ken Griffey Jr., which were silly from Day 1, were shot down. Octavio Dotel wants a multiyear deal, and Wren doesn't seem to expect him back. The Braves do have interest in re-signing Ron Mahay though. Wren says that he won't go after any more starters if the Braves sign Tom Glavine. There haven't been any talks with Mark Teixeira regarding a contract extension yet. showad();

Stark On Dotel, Wickman
2007-07-31 20:35:00 Jayson Stark was just on ESPN talking about the crazy market for relievers. As you know, the Octavio Dotel to Atlanta trade is held up until medical records for all six players involved in the Teixeira deal are reviewed. That's just business as usual. But Stark's saying that teams are still calling up the Royals trying to beat the offer of Kyle Davies for Dotel. He also mentioned that teams are calling the Braves to try to pry Bob Wickman loose in the event that the Braves do get Dotel. Tim Brown backs this up - Wickman can be had if Dotel is secured.

Octavio Dotel (P-KC)
2007-07-31 13:24:00 The rumor mill has the Royals trading Octavio Dotel to the Braves for Kyle Davies. Dotel's value plummets as a setup man and in AL-Only leagues. Davies is 4-8 on the season with a 5.76 ERA and was recently demoted to AAA, but Davies is still only 23 years old and would be worth a flier in keeper leagues.

Trade Rumors - Octavio Dotel to the Atlanta Braves, Al Reyes to the Seattle
2007-07-30 22:29:00 Update [2007-7-30 18:48:51 by Eric Hz]: Reports have Braves' starter Kyle Davies going to Kansas City for Octavio Dotel. I have some concern about a starting pitcher who was unsuccessful in the NL going to baseball's toughest division. The Seattle Intelligencer-Post reports the Mariners' did offer Balentin for Dotel. Ouch. Octavio Dotel looks like he is going to be dealt. I know if I were a Royals fan, I'd like to see AAA slugger Wladimir Balentin coming to Kansas City, but recent news does not mention Seattle as a likely landing place. FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal: In addition to reaching a preliminary agreement for Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira, the Braves are close to a deal for Royals closer Octavio Dotel, according to major-league sources. The Braves, Indians and Dodgers are the three finalists for Dotel, sources say. If the Indians wouldn't part with outfielders Franklyn Gutierrez or Ben Francisco, I do not see how they get Dotel. Rumors had the ...

Tigers Trade Rumors: Barmes, Dotel, Qualls
2007-07-30 01:53:00 The Detroit Free Press has a Tigers update for us today. The Tigers are intent on acquiring a backup shortstop. They recently sent a scout to watch the Rockies' Clint Barmes at Triple A. Barmes is at .310/.374/.464 in the minors this year. Perhaps the Tigers envision him as a possible successor to Carlos Guillen at short. Relievers on the radar: Brad Lidge, Chad Qualls, Octavio Dotel, and Kyle Farnsworth. Eric Gagne does not seem likely right now, and we know Lidge is a long shot. Farnsworth might make the most sense, as the cost would mainly be money. The article names Craig Monroe plus pitching prospects Dallas Trahern and Jair Jurrjens as players the Tigers would trade. Despite all that we've read, I'd be surprised if the Royals could get something better than Jurrjens for Dotel.

Royals Refuse to Give Away Octavio Dotel Cheaply
2007-07-30 01:01:00 Potential trading partners are quick to point out closer Octavio Dotel's propensities for injury and putting runners on base. But the Royals are quick to defend him -- noting that Dotel's somewhat less than sparkling 3.91 ERA is the result of a just a few bad outings, and that he has 11 saves.More important is Dotel's refusal to give up more than a hit an inning while striking out more than one per inning. The Royals see Dotel as having been a key contributor in helping the team go 23-19 since the beginning of June, and are in no hurry to give him up too cheaply.Meanwhile, the deal remains a distinct possibility as bullpen mates Joakim Soria, David Riske and Zack Greinke can be expected to step up if needed. The Indians and Tigers are among teams thought to be participating in negotiations.

Yankees Focused On Gagne, Wheeler, Qualls
2007-07-28 17:00:00 It seems highly likely that the Yankees will make a move to upgrade their bullpen before the Tuesday trade deadline. They appear to have three main targets. Kat O'Brien of Newsday says the Yanks have had serious discussions with Texas regarding Eric Gagne. Though Gagne wants to close, remember that he can be traded to New York without his consent. A Rivera-Gagne combo would essentially turn every game into seven innings. O'Brien names righthanders Ian Kennedy and Jeff Marquez as two pitchers the Rangers might be after. Kennedy is definitely more highly regarded. The Rangers also like Melky Cabrera but the Yankees are resisting. Meanwhile, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News tells us that the Yankees have "narrowed their sights" to Dan Wheeler and Chad Qualls of the Astros. The Astros control Wheeler through 2009 and Qualls through 2010, so the asking price will be significant. Jayson Stark says Houston is looking for a...

Dotel Would Like Contract Extension
2007-07-27 17:16:00 While Octavio Dotel is very likely to be traded by the Royals, he said yesterday that he'd like to talk about a contract extension to stay. It's possible but doesn't seem likely. Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star says Dotel would probably look for something around three years, $21MM, which the Royals could afford. Locking him in would allow Joakim Soria or Zack Greinke to move to the rotation. It still looks like Dotel will end up a Dodger or Indian by Tuesday though. The names we've heard so far include Franklin Gutierrez, Ben Francisco, Chin-Ling Hu, and Tony Abreu.

Mariners Watching Starters
2007-07-26 17:04:00 UPDATE: Hickey writes that the Mariners have also scouted Kyle Lohse, Matt Morris, Jason Johnson (thought he went to Japan), and Octavio Dotel. However, a deal seems unlikely because none of those players are worth top Mariner prospects. According to Jim Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Mariners have been scouting all kinds of available and not-so-available starters lately. The Mariners have been scouting the White Sox "religiously" lately. If they saw Javier Vazquez beat the Tigers on Tuesday, they came away impressed. (However, Vazquez can and probably would veto a trade to the AL or NL West). They were on hand to watch Jose Contreras tonight; the Tigers had batting practice with him and his ERA is up to 6.22. Did you hear that? That was the sound of Contreras' remaining ounce of trade value evaporating. As you know, the Ms watched Dontrelle Willis on Monday. Compared to Contreras, Willis pitched well - four earned ...

Rosenthal On Teixeira, Dunn
2007-07-20 23:38:00 I neglected to mention a Ken Rosenthal article from yesterday, chock full of rumory goodness as always. Rosenthal believes the Yankees need a backup plan in case they are not able to retain Alex Rodriguez. Wilson Betemit definitely makes sense in that he'd be useful even if they do keep A-Rod. Rosenthal basically names every third baseman you can think of. The most likely option, to me, is to simply sign Mike Lowell as a free agent. Would he switch sides? Perhaps, if the Red Sox don't make an offer or try to lowball him. The Braves apparently won't give up Yunel Escobar or Jarrod Saltalamacchia to get Mark Teixeira. Neither of 'em. No doubt John Schuerholz will spend the next ten days trying to get Jon Daniels to settle for less. The Reds have a "co-Dunn-drum," as Rosenthal puts it. Now that's good stuff. The basic codunndrum here is that no team that can afford Adam Dunn wants him. Rosenthal likes the Tigers...

Graziano On Greinke, Pettitte
2007-07-19 18:41:00 Good stuff today from Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger. Here's my summary: Beyond the Cubs, Graziano lists the Braves, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks as teams interested in pitcher Zack Greinke. If the initial asking price for Octavio Dotel was as high as reported, I can't imagine what Dayton Moore would want for Greinke. Graziano's Dotel suitors: Cubs, Dodgers, and Brewers. The Red Sox, Rockies, and Indians have been mentioned by other sources. Quite a market for this guy. David Weathers is seen as the poor man's Dotel/Gagne. Let's see if Wayne Krivsky can get something useful for him. Stormy makes another $2.75MM in '08 before his contract is up. The Mets are mostly focused on a power relief arm, as Roy Oswalt and Dontrelle Willis are said to be unavailable. I have no idea why Willis keeps getting lumped in with Oswalt; they are nowhere near equal. Graziano says the Mets still like Javier Vazquez but the White Sox keep trying...

McAdam On Red Sox Trade Possibilities
2007-07-19 16:01:00 Yesterday, Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal posted an article discussing trade possibilities for the Red Sox. Let's discuss. It seems that the Red Sox will add a bullpen arm despite the fine work of Manny Delcarmen. Apparently they want someone with experience. Eric Gagne doesn't seem likely, nor does Brad Lidge. Instead, Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler, and maybe Salomon Torres or Scott Linebrink could be acquired. The focus is said to be on the Houston relievers. Wheeler seems like a solid buy-low option. You can add Octavio Dotel to the radar as well. And let's throw Brian Fuentes into the mix. UPDATE: Today, McAdam added Damaso Marte as a reliever the Red Sox like. He says the price for Torres is "way too high" at present. And according to the Boston Globe, Drayton McLane will not even consider moving Lidge. The Sox would get involved on a top-flight starter like Roy Oswalt or Dontrelle Willis. Ca...

Trade Rumors - Octavio Dotel, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies
2007-07-17 21:54:00 There is a general consensus that teams will be looking to add pitching before the July 31st non-waivers trading deadline and that the prices requested by the selling teams are high. The Denver Post reports the Rockies have been kicking the tires on starting pitchers Matt Morris of the San Francisco Giants and Jose Contreras of the Chicago White Sox, but the asking prices are "outrageous". A previously reported offer of Jose Contreras for 3B Ian Stewart and LHP Franklin Morales bears that out. The DP also mentions that Royals' closer Octavio Dotel is a target of the Rockies. Unfortunately, this morning's Kansas City Star offers a glimpse at where the Royals are beginning their negotiations. The paper reports the Royals want "a young, established position player" for Dotel. The two Dodgers mentioned? 1B James Loney and OF Matt Kemp. When Brewers' GM Doug Melvin says trade talk is scarce because prices are too steep unless you give-up a young pla...

2007 Fantasy Baseball Sleepers: Octavio Dotel
2007-03-20 22:18:00 Anyone notice what Octavio Dotel is doing this spring? Loyal reader Kyle D. has, and he pointed it out to me. Six innings, ten strikeouts, one walk, no runs. He had a two-inning outing yesterday, which suggests team faith in his elbow. It's time to start bumping him up on your draft lists, the Royals will probably give him a long leash as their $5MM closer. When healthy in 2004 and before, Dotel put up ridiculous strikeout rates. He could whiff 90 in 70 innings this year. If his control is there, he should keep his job and save 25-30 games. With an ADP of 197 (and no earlier than 161), Dotel could provide a ton of value for a low-risk pick.
