Paul Sobotka octopus ban proof something is fishy in Motown
2008-04-25 14:16:00 Just because it's Friday and I am looking for any way to screw up the climactic day to your week, let me break it to you that, yes, there is a new provision in the NHL rulebook than bans the twirling of an octopus — or, in its plural forum, octopi — over one's head. Really, would I jest? This story, uh, has legs to it. It's right there, in black and white blood. Any slimy act by Red Wings' rink rat Al Sobotka to rev up the crowd in his legendary way will cost Sobotka $10,000 out of his own pocket. No word what swinging around a grouper or mackerel will set you back, but octopi are a no-no.Now, we're not suggesting an octopus is actually a fish — I failed Marine Biology 101 — but it hangs out in the water, so I put two and two (and two and two) together. Oh, and I wanted to save you the hassle of having to pronounce cephalopod. Can't you just feel your IQ plummeting as you read this? Hey, it's your NHL.Anyway, back to the point a...

USB Octopus 2.0 Cable 4-Port Hub Reviewed
2008-02-03 00:00:00 I've taken a look at many USB hubs big and small, but none quite like what I have today, it's essentially a few short USB cables connected to a single cable, making it easy to attach your USB devices. It's called the USB Octopus Cable 4-Port Hub but with the name Octopus you might think it has eight connections, but it doesn't only four.. go figure... Anyway, the idea behind it is to allow easy access to the connections for whatever you might want to connect to your USB ports and that it does. Normal hubs are usually square and hard, and with little space between the actual USB connections sometimes not allowing you to connect larger USB drives and other devices at the same time. This product though eliminates any space issues, and from my testing it's very close to using a straight USB connection.
Bob Dylan & Benjamin Franklin, Different Heads Same Octopus
2008-02-02 23:38:00 Mr. PresidentI confess that there are several parts of this constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them: For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information, or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise. It is therefore that the older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment, and to pay more respect to the judgment of others. Most men indeed as well as most sects in Religion, think themselves in possession of all truth, and that wherever others differ from them it is so far error. Steele a Protestant in a Dedication tells the Pope, that the only difference between our Churches in their opinions of the certainty of their doctrines is, the Church of Rome is infallible and the Church of England is never in the wrong. But though many private persons think almost as highly of their own infallibility as of t...

Record Review - Sh! The Octopus
2008-01-14 20:31:00 Artist: Sh! The OctopusAlbum: The Carrot ChaseReleased: July 17, 2007Label: Self ReleasedI got this disc through the post about 3 weeks ago. After several listens and a couple weeks deliberation, I laboured to the decision that this album is... Brilliant. Hailing out of Detroit, Sh! The Octopus pretty much incorporate all the successful dimensions of American pop. Frontman Randy Bishop has an individual voice, the sort that easily captivated me for the length of the record. There are many beautiful melodies throughout. However, these are really complimented by a very strong rhythm section, which somewhat steals the show. On my favourite track from the l.p. 'Apology', Christine Baxter provides some stunning backing vocals that really contrast well with Bishop's voice. Baxter provides keys and backing vocals through out and really is the completing piece of this puzzle.A delightful little record. Highlights for me are 'Apology', 'Flaking Friends' and 'My Kicks'their Myspace ta...

Brazilian Octopus
2007-12-03 14:36:00 Brazilian OctopusLabel - Fermata/Som Livre (BR)Recorded - 1970Style - Funk, Jazz, Brazil, Percussion, Awesome, Octopus(from Dusty Groove)An incredible little record with a sound that's unlike anything else we've ever heard before -- a set that mixes jazzy inflections on vibes, organ, guitar, percussion, and flute -- the last of which is played here by a young Hermeto Pascoal! The set was done after Pascoal's work in Quarteto Novo but before some of his more complicated jazz albums of the 70s -- and it's got a style that mixes his own love of playful rhythms and complicated shadings with a lighter, freer approach to the music -- one that's almost in line with some of the EMI/Odeon work of the time, but which comes off with a slightly different feel. The drums get quite funky at times, and the mix of instruments reminds us a fair bit of the legendary Aquarians album on Uni from the US -- but with an influence that's more bossa-driven, in comparison to the Latin modes of that set...

Are You An Octopus Freelancer?
2007-11-12 19:20:00 As a freelancer, you might feel as if you need to attend to every project at once. Sometimes it is easy to prioritize and other times it is more difficult due to tight deadlines. Each morning, it is critical to plan ahead for your day. Pour that morning cup of coffee and take a moment to make a task list. This helps you to get your daily chores done and hopefully leave a little time for your own interests.Start out with the jobs that require daily maintenance. If you have blog posts to do, get them done early. Write your articles while you are still fresh in the morning. Go down your list for the day until each task is completed. After your "have to do list" is finished, you can now get to the rest of your freelance day. This usually consists of browsing freelance job listings, following up with clients, tweaking websites, adding new keywords and so on.The thing I love the most about freelance work is that you never know what a new day will bring. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry Hughart and Marjory Rea Laughlin. Videos -Octopus on the Catwalk-

THE OCTOPUS PROJECT - ALBUM PREVIEW...
2007-10-05 16:59:00 The Octopus Project are on the cusp of releasing their 3rd album 'Hello Avalanche' on October 16th, 2007, via Peek-A-Boo Records [link]. This wil be their first full length release in 2 years and was recorded and co-produced by Ryan Hadlock (Blonde Redhead, The Gossip) at Bear Creek Studio in Seattle - then mixed by Erik Wofford (Voxtrot, Explosions In The Sky) back in their hometown, Austin, TX.I sometimes find that instrumental albums can be a little long-winded and hard to swallow in their entirety, but 'Hello Avalanche' appears to be a very rare exception to an old rule. There's a diversity here that almost acts as an engine for the album, propelling it forward with exciting twists and unlikely turns. Every track seems to bounce off of the next in wonderful flashes of exploding fuzzy-guitar-riffs, which then melt deliciously into soft organ led melodies with the occasional warbling vocal sample - the track 'I Saw The Bright Shinies' particularly sounds like some freakish ...
Octopus a Feira
2007-09-27 13:11:00 Quite often when you research information into the various cultures and cuisines that make up countries it is quite possible to find a common theme common name for the food of that country. Such as French food, Italian food etc but with the regards to Spanish food or more accurately described as recipes that originate from the country of Spain it could be argued that it is not quite that simple. The reason for this is that you could quite easily argue that technically there is no such thing as Spanish food and the reason being for this is that Spain is an amalgam of its constituent parts that is to say it could be described as a political construct which is made up of disparate groups with their own languages, cultures, cuisines etc. The various autonomous regions that comprise Spain have been slowly pulled together through a variety of different processes some by force, some by choice but they all have one thing in common and that is they have kept their own individual features. Camisetas -Threadless- Octopus Vs Loch Ness-
Octopus Project / Ghostland Observatory
2007-09-21 04:01:00 There are two bands from Austin that are playing sold-out shows here and are soon to do the same everywhere after break-out shows, both with big plans for the future: Octopus Project and Ghostland Observatory. They are also two of my favorite Austin bands, and both mix up indie and electronica - Octopus Project glows and shimmers and warps while Ghostland Observatory cackles and pops and rumbles, Octopus Project following a more artsy experimental route (somewhat like Tortoise and the Avalanches) while Ghostland Observatory clearly run the streets at night (like the Rapture, which is an oft-repeated but not untrue comparison). Octopus Project played Coachella last year after winning a contest and Ghostland followed a breakout performance at 2006's Austin City Limits Festival with one that from what I've heard was one of the best from this past weekend's ACL. They both have two albums under their belt, and Octopus Project's third, "Hello, Avalanche" will be released Oct. 9, (four...

Octopuses -Master Escape Artists(II).
