Washington Redskins face long odds in Dallas showdown
2008-09-28 19:54:00 Despite running off two straight wins in hard-fought fashion, the Washington Redskins face long odds in week four's encounter at the Dallas Cowboys. The NFC East leaders have run off three straight dominant wins to become the consensus best NFL team to date, standing as 11 point favorites against Washington in Texas Stadium.Aside from the Redskins facing the prospect of a seemingly unbeatable dvision foe, they also have to make the adjustments to cope with star defensive end Jason Taylor. The former Miami Dolphins superstar was lost by injury for an indeterminate length of time, ending his consecutive game streak in the process. Not to repeat the obvious but Washington will need to place at its best to have any realistic hope of a late afternoon win. Start time is 4:15 p.m. EDT on WTTG/FOX/5 & WTEM/980 radio._________________________-_______________________________-_______________________________-_______________________________-_______________________________-___________________________...-

2008-07-08 16:09:00 Believe. If I could sum up what I am about to share with you in one word, that would be it. Believe.Recently, I had the pleasure of acting as the Teacher Coordinator with my church's Vacation Bible School, a week-long program for kids aged 4-12. While I was in charge of teaching them some very valuable lessons, I learned several myself as well. One of the most important ones is the message that I got to share with the kids on faith. In short, we discussed Thomas, the disciple of Jesus that doubted the resurrection unless he could actually see Jesus for himself, including the holes in His hands. Silly man...Anyway, as I prayed and prepared for this lesson on the importance of believing in God even though we cannot see Him, I felt that there was another important message about faith and believing. And as I take a final look at the life of Gideon for the lessons from Biblical leaders, I find that this idea fit very well. Once Gideon had his army dwindled down to a mere 300 men, and wa...

Odds and Ends: Broussard, Ledezma, Cooper
2008-06-11 00:58:00 More random linkage. The Yankees have released first baseman Ben Broussard. The Padres designated Wil Ledezma for assignment. The 27 year-old could help someone as a reliever. The first first-rounder of '08 has signed: David Cooper of the Blue Jays. He could be in High-A ball by year's end. Last year's 17th pick, Blake Beavan, got about $1.5MM. By the way, only 26% of readers thought the Jays made the right choice with Cooper (according to our in-draft poll). Funny Mike Mussina quote from John Feinstein's new book.

2008-06-10 12:42:00 Random items for today... MLBTR live chat, today at 2pm CST. Right after I finish my corned beef sandwich. RotoAuthority takes a look at the fantasy value of Randy Wolf. On Sunday I joined the guys from Drunk Jays Fans for part of their podcast. A button to listen to the show can be found here. Paul Hoynes says the Indians' Mark Shapiro will need "at least a month to narrow the field of suitors for players such as C.C. Sabathia and Paul Byrd to see if he really wants to trade them." 2008-06-09 12:59:00 Today's link collection. Joel Sherman puts on his GM hat and proposes five trade offers the Yankees should make. Troy E. Renck doesn't believe the Rockies are ready to start trading off veterans. Jon Heyman heard rumblings that Nationals GM Jim Bowden "could be in trouble." Dave Cameron discusses next year's frontrunner for the #1 draft pick, college pitcher Stephen Strasburg. The pick could be made by Bill Bavasi's replacement. The MLB draft is definitely gaining popularity, but Nick Friedell's suggestions would provide a big boost.

Odds & Ends: Beckham, Bedard, Bonds, Mulder
2008-06-08 12:05:00 Lots of high profile players in today's Odds & Ends: The Rays have opened contract discussions with first overall pick Tim Beckham, says Marc Topkin. Phil Rogers of the Chicago Sports Tribune suggests we add Erik Bedard to the list of starting pitchers who may be available at the trade deadline. More appropriately, Rogers also notes the M's will most likely hold on to Bedard through 2009, a far more likely outcome. Also in the longshot rumor department, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle speculates on Barry Bonds playing for the Red Sox. Personally, I would predict there's a 0.0% chance Bonds plays in Boston. In that same piece by John Shea, Mark Mulder could be done. He's rejecting the idea of a third surgery and attempting to alter his delivery to remain effective and pain free. Will Carroll reports Jeremy Bonderman has undergone surgery to overcome Thoracic Outlet Syndrome - as I understand it, a pinched vein causing a blood clot - and will need a ...

Odds And Ends: Flurry of DFAs And GM Contract Talks
2008-06-07 18:30:00 Tying lose ends on a very slow Saturday indeed. In a series of moves, the Jay's have activated Vernon Wells with less than a month after he broke his wrist in Cleveland and DFA'd Armando Benitez. I guess they're not going after Bonds. Steinbrenner: "There are no plans to sit down and talk with general manager Brian Cashman about his contract status." The G.M.'s contract expires after the 2008 season. By activating Jayson Werth from the DL, the Phillies were forced to DFA Chris Snelling, but the young outfielder is out of options. He has three days to accept the assignment or become a free agent. In order to make room for the newly-acquired Berroa, the Dodgers DFA'd Terry Tiffee. Dodgers beat writer Tony Jackson thinks he could be more expendable this way if he gets claimed off waivers. Bengie Molina is upset by comments made by Giant's G.M. Brian Sabean after this week's draft. Sabean said Buster Posey "is on the fast track and Bengie's clock is winding down." Alejandro "...

Car Insurance - Are You Paying Over the Odds?
2008-06-06 23:40:00 I'm sure many of you have, at one point or other, been on the receiving end of seemingly exorbitant premiums.Whether this is a cause of points on your licence, an unexpected loss of no claims due to collision or merely the result of buying that speedy little car you've had your eye on for years, it can still be a nasty surprise. There are a few things you can do however to decrease the price of those monster policies and here they are: Don't accept the renewal you receive from your existing insurer as 9 times out of 10, you will find a cheaper policy by searching around online. Do be as accurate as you can with your estimated mileage - rounding up this figure will cost more as you will be increasing your risk due to more time spent on the road. Add an older more experienced driver to your policy - this will bring the premium down as having this less risky driver makes you a safer prospect. If you can afford to pay out a higher excess at the time of a claim you can increase this fi...
UFC 85 Bedlam Hughes vs Alves Betting Odds
2008-06-06 21:25:00 All of the betting odds are listed for tomorrow’s UFC 85 event. Brandon Vera (-200) is favored over Fabricio Werdum (+160), Nate Marquardt (-170) is favored over Thales Leites (+140), Hughes (-220) gets a strong advantage over Alves (+170), Swick (-125) slightly favored over Marcus Davis (-105), Wiman holy crap! +350 to -500 for Thiago Tavares! Bisping is favored (of course), -350 over Jason Day +250, Rivera +175 to Kampmann -220, Cane +115 to -145 Lambert, Liaudin +190 to Taylor -240. So, who would I put my money on? I think I’d roll the dice, drop a hundy down on Wiman and possibly take home the 350… It’s a risky bet, however, it looks like fun.
Odds And Ends: More Draft Recap
2008-06-06 19:12:00 A couple of more interesting links recapping the Rule 4 draft... Jim Callis of Baseball America conducted his draft day chat.[On picking Tim Beckham over Buster Posey] . . . That pick just came down to the Rays' personal preference. The easier choice would have been Posey, because he'll be ready quicker and fill a more obvious need, but Tampa Bay thought Beckham had more upside.Kevin Czerwinski has a cool list of over 30 players that were drafted, all of whom have a more famous relative, including Jeremy Beckham, a second baseman from Georgia Southern and older brother of top pick Tim Beckham, who was also selected by the Rays in the 17th round. Odds And Ends: Draft Recap
2008-06-06 12:23:00 Let's take a look and see what is being said about the first round selections from day one of the Rule 4 Draft... Keith Law calls this year's first round "unusual in a number of ways," noting that more than half of the picks were college relief pitchers, corner infielders and catchers, three areas that usually get little attention in the first round. Law also gives us his choice for the team that made the best pick (Rockies), the worst picks (Seattle, Minnesota) and the teams that picked players that could reach the big leagues quickly (Seattle, Detroit, Arizona, Chicago, Baltimore). Baseball America has their first round recap with a look at each of the draftees. Minor League Ball gives us their thoughts on a few sleepers from the 4th and 5th round of the draft. The D-Backs top pick seems to be the most vocal draftee in terms of wanting to be in the big leagues this season. Odds and Ends: Lane, K-Rod, Adam LaRoche
2008-06-04 18:27:00 Random linkage... Jason Lane has agreed to remain a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee. Francisco Rodriguez would like to play nine more seasons. Four or five or those might come with his next contract, which may set a record for a reliever. Pirates prospect Steve Pearce is getting some time at first base in Triple A. Despite that development, Dejan Kovacevic says there is no Adam LaRoche trade chatter yet. LaRoche followed up his standard awful April with an .804 OPS in May. RotoAuthority looks at the fantasy studs of May. SI.com's Jon Heyman speculates that it'd require at least two of a team's best young players to get Matt Holliday.

Rusty Berkeley Corona Beats Odds, Evades Crusher
2008-06-03 13:13:00 You can’t go more than a block or two in Berkeley without running across some sort of interesting old car; we saw the Jag XK140 that Herr Johnson shot for us last week, and now we’re going to look at a car that’s nearly as rare (though not quite as sought after). The Toyota Corona has more or less disappeared from North American streets, but here’s a ‘72 I found still thriving in Berkeley’s upscale Claremont neighborhood.

Odds and Ends: Lane, Dodgers, Huntington
2008-06-02 12:50:00 A collection of links to browse on this fine Monday. Jason Lane can exercise an out clause if he's not promoted to the bigs today. The 31 year-old outfielder is hitting .248/.340/.485 with 11 home runs in 202 Triple A at-bats. The Dodgers hope to acquire a veteran utility infielder as an insurance policy for Rafael Furcal. Any suggestions? The Hardball Times' Mike Lee did an enjoyable interview with Pirates GM Neal Huntington. I have a feeling we'll get a better grasp on Huntington's trading abilities within the next few months. CBSSports.com added Danny Knobler to their team. Odds and Ends: Alvarez, Zimmerman, Vizcaino, Hawkins
2008-06-01 11:20:00 Some random musings around the league: As MLBTR noted before, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also believes the Pirates will take Pedro Alvarez if the Rays pass on him. Ryan Zimmerman may be looking for David Wright money (six years, $55MM), but the Nationals may be willing to pay him Ian Kinsler money (5 years, $22MM), according to Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post. In this piece by Tony Jackson on the LA Daily News, 39 year-old Jose Vizcaino may try to make a comeback in 2009. He's currently a special assistant with the Dodgers. Troy Renck suggests the Rockies could be interested in LaTroy Hawkins if he continues to struggle for the Yankees. By Nat Boyle

Odds and Ends: Posada, Uribe, Wise, Red Sox
2008-05-31 18:39:00 Jorge Posada could rejoin the Yankees as early as Wednesday (a few reports suggested Tuesday). Kat O'Brien of Newsday says the Yanks will hold on to both Jose Molina and Chad Moeller for "a while" after Posada returns, but as Peter Abraham points out on the LoHud Yankees blog, the Yankees have a real need for a set-up man now that Joba Chamberlain is starting. Juan Uribe has been activated from the 15-day DL, and although Ozzie Guillen said he wasn't guaranteed playing time, they had to make room on the roster nonetheless; DeWayne Wise was designated for assigment. The news that Clay Buchholz has been optioned to Pawtucket comes as a shock to yours truly, but it underscores just how much starting pitching the Red Sox have right now, even with Daisuke Matsuzaka currently on the 15-day DL. Free agent pickup Bartolo Colon has worked out so far as a low-risk, high-reward signing. They've also got a good spot-starter in Jamaican sidearmer Justin Masterson, currently in AA...

Odds And Ends: Duncan, Mather, Huntington, Trachsel, Rusch
2008-05-31 14:36:00 A few notes to wrap up what I've come across this Saturday: The Hardball Times has an interview with Pirates GM Neal Huntington. It's plenty long. He talks about the dynamics in dealing with his former team, the Cleveland Indians. Steve Trachsel might be on his way out with the Orioles. Tough to argue against that move. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the O's are in the cellar, and might not climb out for the rest of 2008. Chris Duncan down, Joe Mather up. Could Mather be the piece that rounds out a powerful outfield? Or could he be trade bait to bring back, say, a second baseman? Glendon Rusch is back in the majors, having been recalled by the Rockies. Posted by Joe Pawlikowski, who writes for River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog, and can be reached here.

Odds And Ends: Weaver, Mulder, Pena, Giambi
2008-05-30 18:42:00 Here are a few random notes from the MLBiverse... Paul Hagen is reporting that the Mets are interested in acquiring a first baseman and/or a corner outfielder. Hagen says that Omar Minaya is rumored to be interested in Kevin Millar, Jason Bay and Xavier Nady. Hagen must share a source with Dan Graziano, who mentions the same trio. Might Aaron Heilman be used as bait? According to the minor league deal that Jeff Weaver signed with the Brewers, if he was not called up by this Sunday he could ask for his release. Odds Ends
2008-05-29 21:26:00 Live from Northwest Minneapolis, let's round up the loose ends from the past few days: Injuries: Chad Tracy came off the DL. Bob Melvin stated that he's behind Conor Jackson at 1B and Mark Reynolds at 3B, but it's not hard to imagine Tracy getting decent PT if Reynolds keeps hitting as he has lately. Buddy Carlyle came off the DL for the Braves, who DFA'd Chris Resop to make room. Jack Wilson came off the DL for the Pirates, who sent Brian Bixler to AAA Indianapolis to make room. Wilson resumed his starting role at SS, batting second. Gary Sheffield hit the DL with an oblique strain. The Tigers called up Jeff Larish from AAA, who hit 16 HR in 191 AB. He's obviously a good source for power, but don't expect much in the AVG department, as his .266 career MiLB AVG isn't a great sign. Eric Byrnes hit the DL with sore hamstrings, marking his first trip to the DL. The D-Backs called up Alex Romero, who should see PT in LF, along with Jeff Salazar and Chris Burke. Although Ryan Chu...

Morgan Ensberg is a DFA candidate, while LaTroy Hawkins may be getting there. Bret Boone's comeback attempt has ended. 2008-05-26 13:48:00 Live from the Buckeye State, it's time for some Odds & Ends. Let's catch up on what's happened during my journey from Texas to Ohio:Injuries: Austin Kearns underwent elbow surgery and will miss 3-4 weeks. Look for Elijah Dukes to get more PT. Moises Alou is back on the DL with a calf strain. The Mets called up Raul Casanova to take his roster spot. Adam Everett hit the DL with a strained right shoulder. The Twins called up Matt Macri [MiLB Value -$18.71] to take his roster spot. The Tribe activated Joe Borowski from the DL, DFA'ing Craig Breslow to make room. The White Sox placed Juan Uribe on the DL with a strained hamstring, calling up DeWayne Wise to take his spot. Wise is a good add for SBs if he gets sufficient PT/pinch-running opportunities. Eric Gagne hit the DL with right rotator cuff tendinitis, calling up Tim Dillard [MiLB Value $6.67] to take his spot. Jason Werth hit the DL with a strained oblique, recalling OF T.J. Odds And Ends: Ramirez, Tavarez, Brewslow, Pena
2008-05-24 12:18:00 Thankfully, the calendar will soon flip to June, and trade rumors will start to heat up. To tide you over until then, here are a few notes from around the league. Sean McAdam wonders if Manny Ramirez's current slump will affect the team's decision to exercise his $20MM option for 2009. Manny sounded rather confident last month that the team would pick it up. And while it's nearly a given that he'll recover from this month, the Red Sox could read it as a sign of decline. Still, the chances of the option being picked up are still high. A few days after accepting an assignment to AAA Pawtucket, Julian Tavarez has instead opted for free agency. Couple of transaction notes. Braves C Brayan Pena has been activated from the DL, and immediately designated for assignment. Indians reliever Craig Breslow was also DFA. RotoAuthority takes a look at Clayton Kershaw, who may be called up soon. Brandon Medders was DFA'd to make room for Doug Davis. Not to be mean, but the 28 year-old reliever doesn't do anything particularly well. The Glendon Rusch signing takes the Rockies out of the Julian Tavarez sweepstakes. Jayson Stark said the Brewers made a run at Tavarez a week ago. Paul Sullivan suggests that Jim Edmonds may be on a short leash in Chicago. Jon Heyman grades last winter's trades. We've filled the Sunday afternoon writing gig...many thanks to all who applied.

2008-05-22 16:15:00 Injuries: The Angels put Erick Aybar on the DL with a dislocated pinky, an injury expected to keep him out of action for four weeks. They activated Chone Figgins from the DL to take Aybar's roster spot. Bobby Cox thinks John Smoltz will be back in a couple of weeks. Ouch. Albert Pujols took out two Padres in last nights game. Add Josh Bard, who sprained an ankle in a home plate collision, and Chris Young, who took a line drive that broke his nose, to Pujols' list of victims. DL stints are possible for both. Transactions: The Rangers DFA'd RP Franklyn German, calling up Kameron Loe [MiLB Value -$16.84]. Dejan Kovacevic has heard that the Pirates are torn between Pedro Alvarez and Tim Beckham at #2. Cha Seung Baek has been DFA'd, and this time he might be claimed. He could have a career as a fifth starter somewhere. John Brattain explains why he feels teams are colluding against Barry Bonds. The Rangers DFA'd reliever Franklyn German; Evan Grant explains why. The Indians claimed reliever Oneli Perez from the White Sox. Baseball America says the six-fingered pitcher has attitude questions. Odds and Ends: Royals, Cashman, Tavarez
2008-05-20 12:38:00 Here's today's link collection. MLB.com's Dick Kaegel hears the Royals are leaning toward an impact bat in the June draft. Baseball America predicted catcher Buster Posey, while Jonathan Mayo went with first baseman Eric Hosmer. First baseman Justin Smoak is another possibility. Paul DePodesta tells a story about the gamesmanship of the draft. Hank Steinbrenner says there's a chance Brian Cashman will be the Yankees' GM next year, if he wants to be. He might be able to find a better situation. If there's a new GM, his first task might be negotiating with Scott Boras for Mark Teixeira. The Rockies still might have mild interest in Julian Tavarez, who will become a free agent today. The Marlins, Rockies, and Rangers were the three clubs interested in Edinson Volquez when he was a kid in the Dominican. MLBTR chat right here at 2pm CST today, don't miss it!

2008-05-20 10:24:00 Injuries: Ouch. Jake Peavy hits the DL. His Yahoo player card had this listed: "RHP Jake Peavy could miss more than a month with a strained flexor mass to the forearm side of his elbow. Peavy was placed on the 15-day disabled list after an MRI exam showed fluids around the ligament in the elbow". I'll wait to read Will Carroll's analysis, but don't plan on Peavy being back next week. The A's put IF Donnie Murphy on the DL with a sore right elbow, recalling P Dallas Braden [MiLB Value -$3.65]. The Nats have put Ronnie Belliard on the DL with a strained left calf. They called up Chris Schroder [MiLB Value $9.66] from AAA Columbus. Schroder sports a career 10.96 K/9 in the minors, and could be a decent MR for NL Only leagues. Transactions: Jacque Jones is a Marlin. Exiled from Detroit, he is expected to become the Fish's starting CF, pushing Alfredo Amezaga to the bench. Seattle called up Jeremy Reed [MiLB Value $23.04] to take the spot vacated ...

SPL Latest Odds: Title Race Goes Down to the Wire

UFC 84 Betting Odds and Analysis
2008-05-19 21:39:00 Fight Break Downs:Lyoto Machida (-200 BetUS) vs. Tito Ortiz (+180 Bodog) Machida may not have an endless KO highlight reel but while training out of the Black House with Anderson Silva and A. Nogueira he has developed his own unique and undefeated style. He has combined his karate background with Muay Thai, wrestling, and Jiu Jitsu techniques (starting at 15) into a calm counter fighting style. The dragon's style may never be a fan favorite, but it wins by forcing opponents to step outside of their own game plan.Lyoto's gameplan in this fight will look much like it has in other UFC fights. He will stay outside counter punching and throwing the occasional back kick. It is very likey that he will be taken down in the first round and see the same sort of barrage that Forrest experienced. Lyoto has both the chin and the skill from his back to avoid serious damage. In the second round Tito will likely taste Lyoto's power and speed. We all know what happens when Tito gets hit, it gets ...
Odds and Ends: Wilder, Vlad, Jose Reyes
2008-05-19 12:29:00 Time to round up some links. The White Sox fired scouting director David Wilder and two scouts. Investigators are trying to determine if they skimmed bonuses designated for Latin American prospects. I did a Q&A recently. I forgot, at the time, that Albert Pujols is actually younger than Chase Utley. Imagine if Vladimir Guerrero had been paired with Barry Bonds. Joel Sherman points out that Jose Reyes will be just 28 when his contract is up. Roto Professor chats with prospect guy Jonathan Mayo. Extension talks with Corey Hart have fizzled.

2008-05-19 09:36:00 Injuries: The Cubs put Daryle Ward on the DL with a bulging disc in his back. They called up Micah Hoffpauir from AAA Iowa, but it doesn't look like he'll get significant PT. Transactions: The Mariners sent Jeff Clement down to AAA, after hitting only .167 in his brief stint in the bigs. Jose Vidro will return to the DH role. The Red Sox called up Chris Smith from AAA Pawtucket [MiLB Value $16.90], sending down OF Jonathan Van Every to make room. Smith has seen a moderate rise in his K rate this year; if that continues, he could be a decent AL-only RP. Misc.: Hank Blalock will be moved to 1B once he returns from the DL. Chris Shelton and Frank Catalanotto have been playing there lately. Ramon Vazquez should continue to man the hot corner, as he's done decent since filling in for Blalock.
