Ofcom Sanctions Free Radio
2009-09-24 15:12:00 Well who would have thought it! According to many pages on the subject across the internet, hang gliders have a special arrangement with Ofcom to allow them easy access to various radio frequencies without needing a licence! Yes, apparently a chap called Rod Buck, the then radio officer of the British Hang Gliding and Parachute Association (BHPA) reached an 'agreement' with the Radiocommunications Agency some years ago (must have been quite some years as the Agency was disbanded in 2003) that they could use a set of radio frequencies for air to air and air to ground communications and as long as they stuck to them the Agency would 'turn a blind eye'.What are these frequencies? 143.750 to 143.950 MHz in 25 kHz steps. If you don't believe me, take a look here. The top of this frequency range, 143.950 MHz, is the unofficial calling channel and from the Wireless Waffle HQ it is alive most days with chitter chatter from enthusiasts dodging in and out of plane...

Ofcom, public service news and the ?arms race?
2008-04-18 00:00:00 An interesting reference to search engine optimisation made by Ofcom seems to have gone widely unnoticed, perhaps because it was buried down at the end of the report. In its second public service broadcasting review earlier this month, the watchdog referred to a SEO “arms race”. It noted that search portals are now the main starting ...

UK’s Ofcom opens 2.6GHz spectrum for Wimax
2008-04-07 22:20:00 UK just may have a surging economy on its horizon. Ofcom and government has been very proactive in opening access markets to new entrants and freeing wireless spectrum for next generation services. the auction process for 205MHz of spectrum in the 2010-2025 MHz and 2500-2690 MHz bands - known collectively as 2.6GHz spectrum - to begin in the summer. As with previous auctions, the spectrum is being made available on a service-neutral basis - which means bidders are not required to restrict their use of the spectrum to a particular technology or service. However Ofcom notes there are a number of potential uses for the 2.6GHz spectrum - which it said can support high-speed, high-capacity mobile data connections - including mobile broadband wireless services via technologies such as WiMax or evolutions of 3G. The 2.6GHz spectrum release is part of a wider programme to liberate around 400MHz of ‘prime spectrum’ over the next few years to create opportunities for wireless inno...

New legislation will mean that "UK users will not need a license to use UWB devices when they hit shelves in the future," and Ofcom's Chief Executive Ed Richards was quoted as saying that "where possible, we want to remove restrictions on the use of spectrum to allow the market to develop new and innovative services, such as UWB, for the benefit of consumers." BBC & Ofcom.
Segue a grande distanza Italia 1.
