Video: Al Jefferson Talks About His Off-Season
2009-08-08 21:51:00
Al Jefferson, Minnesota Timerwolves forward, has had one long, extended off-season. He hurt his knee, causing him to miss the rest of the season. He has said he'd be able to come back at 100% next season.Just to explain something important from the video: he says he will visit the doctor on August 24th. He expects to be cleared to play at that time. Then he can really start getting back into basketball shape. If all goes well, it sounds like he'll be ready from the get go this season.Enjoy:Embedded video from NBA Video

Talking Off-Season With Royce of Daily Thunder
2009-07-17 15:37:00
We've been interviewing team bloggers latley. Now we're talking to Royce of Daily Thunder. It's a great site about a really good up and coming team.1. The Thunder played in both the Vegas and Orlando summer leagues. Who impressed you? Obviously Russell Westbrook looked tremendous, but anyone else?In Orlando, Serge Ibaka was an absolute stud. He averaged 13 and four on almost 70 percent shooting and looked NBA ready, but his production has tailed off in Vegas. I think Shaun Livingston has looked almost completely healthy the last few weeks. He's moving extremely well side-to-side and looks like he has a lot of his quickness back. James Harden has lived up to expectation and at times both Kyle Weaver and D.J. White have looked really solid.2. I have also liked what I have seen from James Harden thus far. The only thing that looks really bad from him is his tendency to only go left. Have you seen that and how much of an issue could it be for him in his rookie season? You're absolut...
Talking Off-Season With Kyle of Truth About It
2009-07-16 20:27:00
We got a chance to interview Kyle of Truth About It. Make sure to check out his site to get your Wizards fix. Also follow him on Twitter.1. A while back, the Wizards picked up Randy Foye and Mike Miller for Oleksiy Pecherov, Etan Thomas and Darius Songaila and the fifth pick in the draft (now Ricky Rubio). What were your thoughts on this trade? Does this show the Wizards front office wants to win now rather than later? The Wizards are definitely in 'win-now' mode, or else they would have traded Antawn Jamison at the February '09 trade deadline in exchange for cap room and perhaps a mid-level prospect. Both Cleveland and Portland were said to be very interested. The Miller/Foye trade, which keeps Washington in luxury tax territory, further establishes the immediacy of the situation.Overall, I like the trade. The bench gets deeper. The offense, combined with the new system Flip Saunders will implement, gets much better. However, losing Darius Songaila (Ernie Grunfeld has been on rec...
Talking Off-Season With Drew of Peachtree Hoops
2009-07-08 03:08:00
Drew took some time to talk with us about the Hawks. Make sure you check out Peachtree Hoops. It's a great Hawks blog.1. This is from the Basketball Fiend (also see their blog): Who is a bigger free agent priority? Marvin Williams? Or Mike Bibby (written before he re-signed)?Now that Mike Bibby is signed, I am going with Marvin. Sorry I am a slacker so that this question can be answered..2. Do you think Mike Woodson can be the coach of a title winning Hawks team? I myself haven't loved him as coach and question if he's the right coach to lead them to bigger and better places.Who is asking this question and where can I find their optimism? Just to answer it as a hypothetical makes me feel better about the Hawks. Most people would mock me for even bringing up the idea that the Hawks are only a piece away from contending let alone winning. But in my wildest dreams where I suspend all kinds of reality (like the fact that the Cavs and Lakers exist) not even Mike Woodson can make it int...
Talking Off-Season With Nick of Boston Celtics News Station
2009-07-03 17:52:00
Making the team blogging rounds, we're now talking Celtics. We have Nick Gelso of Boston Celtics News Station. An up and coming C's blog you are going to have check out.1. Lots of elite Eastern conference teams have made big moves recently. The Cavs got Shaq and the Magic got Vince Carter. What if anything do the Celtics need to do to keep up with the other title contending teams in the East?I believe Boston has almost completely slipped under the radar of the media and key opponents. The Cavs acquired Mo Williams last season to combat the Celtics. Though that playoff match up never materialised, Mo Williams was a no factor against the Magic in the EC Finals. This season the Cavs brought in Shaq to combat Dwight Howard. While Cleveland has spent the last two off seasons on the defensive, this year prepping for an Orlando rematch, Boston has been developing their current roster, resting and regrouping for another title run. In my opinion, the Celtics starting line up has the league...
Talking Off-Season with Howlin' T-Wolf
2009-07-03 16:24:00
The Timberwolves have been in the news a ton lately. Maybe you have heard. We got a chance to talk to the Howlin' T-Wolf about his team. Also make sure you check out his site, just a tremendous blog.1. This whole Ricky Rubio stuff is crazy. You take him with the fifth pick in the draft, he doesn't show up to meet the press in Minnesota, he's totally unsure on if he'll play with the Wolves or overseas next year (written before it was reported he will be in Spain for two years). Give us the latest on this whole situation and predict where you think Rubio will be playing next year. The Ricky Rubio situation can only be described as a poker game or a chess match. The latest is that Rubio was said to have flown into town with his dad this past Saturday with a meeting with Kahn. Although there was no official confirmation of this both Timberwolves beat writers as well as a source I have with the organization pointed to this being true. The sounds of silence afterward (no confirmation, ...
Talking Off-Season With Jeff of Project Spurs
2009-06-30 16:46:00
We are talking to lots of team bloggers and getting their takes on what their squads will be doing in the off-season. Now we have Jeff of the great Spurs blog, Project Spurs. Make sure to check them out and stay up to date on everything Spurs.1. Let's first talk about the Spurs big trade. Getting Richard Jefferson for Obricio and some other old guys, how happy did that make you feel? How close were to you writing that the Spurs front office really wasn't doing their job?So happy I packed Oberto's bag, got him a 1-way ticket to Milwaukee and lied to the Dept. of Homeland Security that he is illegally in the USA and needs to be deported immediately to Argentina. Said to Bowen thanks for everything, see you at your jersey retirement party in SA and asked Thomas "Can we get you back instead of Oberto and Bowen?" That's how happy I was. Seriously the Spurs lacked that athletic small forward. It was very apparent in the Mavs series when Howard was having his way with the Spurs. This w...
Talking Off-Season With: A Royal Pain
2009-06-29 21:29:00
We got a chance to talk with Bryan of A Royal Pain. He writes a tremendous Kings blog, so make sure you check it out. Also check out his other site, Kings Forum.1. Looking at your draft review, I see you were one of the guys that wanted the Kings to select Ricky Rubio. Tell us what you do and don't like about what you got and if you'd still deal Kevin Martin for Rubio.I think a lot of people were more shocked than upset at the selection of Tyreke Evans, including myself. I watched Evans at Memphis quite a bit and thought he'd be a really nice player in the league, but, I still think we made a mistake passing on Rubio. The way the Kings roster is built, guys like Spencer Hawes, Jason Thompson, and Kevin Martin all need to be set up for shots and that's something Rubio could have done with ease. Despite what a lot of people are saying, I really don't view Evans as a point guard even with his great ball handling skills but his ability to break down defenders one on one is a welcom...

Let the Off-season Begin
2008-10-31 23:03:00
The World Series is now over with the Phillies being crowned baseball's champion of the 2008 season, so the off-season is officially underway. With the Giants in full rebuilding mode and with Bengie Molina and Randy Winn both entering the final year of their contracts, they could be amongst the players the Giants have on the trading block as the off-season gets going. The team also has two young players in Pablo Sandoval and Nate Schierholtz who have proven all they can at the minor league level and could provide adequate replacements for the two veterans. According to Rotowire, the New York Mets have had internal discussions about pursuing Bengie Molina. The Mets showed some interest in Molina before the trade deadline over the summer, but talks never got too serious, but at that time, the Giants didn't know quite what they had in Sandoval. They also have 2008 top pick Buster Posey a year or 2 away from being in the mix, so Molina doesn't have much of a future with this team. Th...
World Series Game One Result...Five Boston Red Sox Off Season Questions
2008-10-23 11:00:00
Philadelphia won game one of the 2008 World Series with a tense, terse 3-2 pitching-heavy victory in St. Petersburg, Florida Wednesday night. The Phillies' Cole Hamels outpitched Scott Kazmir, who pitched well himself, to earn the victory. Game two will be Thursday night at 8:35pm EDT on FOX and FOXHD. It's a must game for the Mohawk-laden Rays. Enjoy! The Boston Globe's Tony Massarotti had a great piece in this morning's paper detailing the five most important questions Boston has to answer in the off season. I linked the article, which allows you, the fan, to vote on each query. Simply click on this title's post. You might be surprised by a couple of the leading voting answers, but you read this blog, among others, so I don't think so. Let me zap through the five questions and after you have a chance to vote, I'll follow it up with my exhaustively researched (yeah, right) opinions on each one. Hey, the only research I do when I give my opinion on anything Red Sox is listen t...
Off-Season Off-Base Diary: Bleh Edition
2008-10-07 19:43:00
See you and your pink tissue paper next year, McDreamy So, it's over. Our team failed to show up. Again. Our hearts are broken. Again. And we're all vowing that we need to blow up this team and start over and never, ever, EVER let them do this to us again. Again. At times like this, I think of Bart Giamatti: It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone. So well said. I read it every year, on the day after our season ends. And then ...
Flames early off-season rumors

Lynch Incident Highlights Tumultuous Bills Off Season
2008-06-05 12:45:00
Lynch one of seven current and former Bills with issues (Photo Source) "Character."  It's the overriding quality of hard work and "team player" that former Buffalo Bills GM Marv Levy and his regime worked hard to build a new team around in his two-year run from 2006 to 2007.  Those two character-based teams finished 7-9 in consecutive years under the leadership of Dick Jauron, and with the team moving in the correct direction talent-wise, Levy saw fit to retire for a second time from the Bills organization, which handed the reigns to a trio of Levy's understudies. In one off-season, however, several Bills players have developed issues that fall outside of the perceived "character" spectrum that could become distractions to the franchise for the foreseeable future.  Whether we're talking about legal issues, contractual issues or playing time issues, the fact remains that the Bills currently have five players with very specific stories to follow - all with varying de...

Bills Play WR Market Well in Off Season
2008-05-07 15:39:00
Evans should benefit from new rookie running mate (Photo Source) During the 2007 NFL season, when the Buffalo Bills had plenty of trouble scoring through the air, we knew it.  We knew it early in the off-season when the Bills released veteran wideout Peerless Price.  We even probably knew it before the '07 season started: the Bills really needed an upgrade at wide receiver. Heading into the free agent signing period, pundits everywhere knew that the Bills could and would be targeting a wide receiver.  Instead, the team focused on beefing up its defensive front seven, acquiring three big men - tackles Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson, as well as linebacker Kawika Mitchell - in the first two days of free agency.  Good, logical strategy - still bad receivers. By that point in free agency, the wide receiver pool had thinned.  Probably the best fit for the team in terms of their size wishes, Ernest Wilford, had already been gobbled up by the talent-starved Dolp...

Bills Spend Off Season Getting Bigger
2008-05-02 15:06:00
Mitchell adds size, versatility to LB corps (Photo Source) Last season, despite a rash of injuries, rookies at quarterback and running back, and incredibly long odds, the Buffalo Bills were playing for their playoff lives in Week 15.  In that game, which took place in Cleveland, the Bills were shut out in a winter storm.  That day, the rather large Browns pushed the Bills around the field of play like blocking sleds. The following week, history repeated itself.  After taking a 14-0 lead on the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants, the aptly named champions used their size and toughness to overpower the Bills after heavy rains and wind infiltrated Ralph Wilson Stadium.  Take away those 14 points - which were scored before the harsh weather hit Buffalo that day - and in two successive weeks, the tiny Bills had been outscored 46-7 in weather that was supposed to be to their advantage, not their undoing. Simply put, the Bills weren't big enough.  Playin...

A Long, Long, Long Off-Season
2008-04-07 07:41:00
The season is finally, mercifully, over. For the first time since the 1997/1998 campaign the Toronto Maple Leafs finished with fewer than 90 points. We're in for one long off-season my friends, and I've got a ton of questions that need to be answered. It hasn't actually set in that the season is over. It feels a little bit surreal, even. Like I'm trapped in this three year nightmare, with a playoff game nowhere in sight. I guess it'll hit home once the second season begins and I'm cheering for the Washington Capitals instead of my Leafs. These are difficult times, indeed. The franchise is in dire straits. It's impossible to know whether the Leafs can pull a Montreal or Philadelphia and be competitive one year after missing the playoffs. There are simply too many questions to be answered. In honour of that beautiful segue way, lets do this: 20 Questions, Toronto Maple Leafs excruciatingly long off-season edition.1. Will the Leafs target Brian Burke as their new general manager? T...

Senators potential off-season departures, and re-acquisitions
2008-03-23 17:40:00
According to Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun, Ottawa Senators pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Mike Commodore would like to play for the Ottawa Senators past this season. However, Commodore tells Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun that before he makes such a decision, he will have to assess if the club’s style of play suits him. “Before I sign a contract here, I have to see if I can play here,” he said. “The way it’s been going, I’ll wind up being a minus-300 player for my career.” Commodore has been struggling since his arrival form the Carolina Hurricanes. He tells Koshan that his awful statistical numbers are a result of his inability to adapt to the club’s system, rather than effort. “Not through a lack of effort, but for whatever reason, the system change has been a struggle for me. In Carolina it was always get up the ice when you can, make the play and go. Here it is more back off, let the forward do the work...
Off-Season Recap - The Best, Worst, Winners, and Losers

Omar getting an A+ for this off-season and not just for Johan
2008-02-16 03:04:00
No I'm not being a hypocrate, I fully admit that I was all over Omar's case just a month ago during this off-season. I was constantly complaining about his in-activity, once a huge supporter of Omar's I began to wonder whether he was the right person for the job. As I criticized him, I said that I would gladly admit that I was wrong if he somehow pulled out this off-season. Most of you agree with me, however; some of you, even as late as it had become in the off-season kept saying to wait and held out faith that Omar would come through.Well for those of you with such great patience, You were right and I was completely wrong.........In my eyes, with pitchers and catchers in camp and most of the position players arriving this weekend, Omar did a brillant job this off-season and deserves an grade of A+......Yes, he landed Johan Santana one of the greatest pitchers of this generation and did so while he's in the prime of his career. Not only did Omar have the vision to not sign some...

Buccaneers primed to acquire a Wide Receiver and Tight End this Off-Season?
2008-02-14 04:39:00
With QB Jeff Garcia, LB Derrick Brooks, and CB Ronde Barber only having a couple seasons left in a Buccaneers jersey, we're clearly in a Win-Now position. There's very few mobile veteran QB's in the NFL that can step in and command a team like Jeff Garcia has thus far. I believe GM Bruce Allen has to pull a Blockbuster Trade and acquire a Top Flight Wide Receiver. Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald fits that mold. Oh he's going to cost more than I'm sure the Glazers would like to spend (14.5 mil in '08 and 17.3 mil in '09), but he's also 24 years old, averages over 1,100 yards a season, and has proved to be durable over his short NFL career. Fitzgerald brings an excellent work ethic and character to the playing field. The bigger question might be what the Cardinals want for Larry and whether they're even interested in trading the phenom... My guess is they're not, but Allen has to turn over every stone. To be the best, you have to pay and acquire the best. The David Bos...

Make or Break Off-Season for Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen
2008-01-17 12:49:00
The Bucs Beat is reporting that GM Bruce Allen is publicly hopeful that QB Jake Plummer will join the Bucs this upcoming season; he even goes so far as to say that Plummer got a good glimpse at the Bucs this year and that he should be intrigued enough to come play for the Bucs.Call me crazy but just maybe Bruce should FORGET Jake Plummer and start moving on to more pressing and REALISTIC needs, like Re-signing Defensive Coordinator Monte Kiffin, trying any way possible to trade for a noteworthy Wide Receiver, and getting depth for the Offensive Line. In a few weeks the Bucs will go to court and try to recoup 7 million in damages from said QB Jake Plummer.... what a joke this continues to be. Move on already, the fan base has...

Mets showing same lack of urgency in off-season
2007-12-23 17:20:00
John Harper of the New York Daily News referenced the fact that the New York Mets have shown the same lack of urgency in the off-season they showed during the regular-season, which culminated in the greatest collapse in baseball history.By pairing Dan Haren with Brandon Webb at the top of their rotation, the Arizona Diamnodbacks now have the type of elite pitching that makes them built for October, along with the best nucleus of young position players in the majors, one that already has a division title under its belt.Suddenly, then, there should be a little more urgency for the Mets to improve themselves. Signing reliever Matt Wise five days ago was hardly the move to justify those higher ticket prices. As for starting pitchers, the Mets seem to be zeroing in instead on a veteran reclamation project such as Kyle Lohse, Bartolo Colon or Livan Hernandez.
2008-2009 Off Season Thoughts
2007-12-23 11:37:00
