Cito Gaston's Offseason Wish List
2009-09-23 15:22:00
Ken Fidlin of the Toronto Sun spoke Tuesday with Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston, who laid out his "wish list" for the upcoming offseason. GM J.P. Ricciardi (if he's still around) and the Jays' ownership group will ultimately make the final decisions this winter, but who knows a team's needs better than its skipper?"A lot depends on free agency," Gaston said. "It depends on who leaves and who sticks around. We might need a new shortstop [if Marco Scutaro departs via free agency], we might need to replace Rod (Barajas) at catcher. And John McDonald is a free agent, also." Gaston said he's hoping for "some help in the starting rotation" as well, and there should be a decent free agent market for mid-rotation starters. To summarize, the Jays are at risk of losing Scutaro, who's having a fine season, first baseman-designated hitter Kevin Millar and, as Gaston mentioned, Barajas and infielder John McDonald. Toronto probably won't have a ton of payroll flexibility, but there's plenty ...

Jason Taylor Boycotting Offseason: Prepare for Trade Rumors
2008-05-21 22:05:00
In a move that will surely set radio shows and message boards afire, Miami Defensive End Jason Taylor is not attending any offseason activities with the Dolphins, including Training Camp.  Head Coach Tony Sparano announced Taylor's intention to boycott in his OTA press conference today: "This is my reaction with the Jason Taylor situation and I'm going to answer this question one time," Sparano said. "I'm not going to answer another question about the Jason Taylor situation after I answer this. Here's what I know. What I know is that Jason Taylor – and I'm glad we know this, we've gotten the information and that's important – but I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTAs, I know that Jason is not going to be in any mini-camps and I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp. This, obviously, effects the Jaguars as they have long been connected to rumors of interest and trade talks.  It seemed as though these talks came to an a...

Cowboys Strategy This Offseason Is The Right One
2008-03-13 15:30:00
The Cowboys have been quiet this offseason.  Thus far, they have lost three players — Julius Jones, Jacques Reeves and Keith Davis — and signed only one — Zack Thomas. Of the three players signing with other teams, two were predominantly special teams players.  And while Jones was the starter for the entire regular season, his playing time gave way to Marion Barber III, and it was unlikely he would have still been the starter next year. What they have done is resign players — Flozell Adams being the big signing, with the franchise tag given to Ken Hamlin and high tender offers to restricted free agents Marion Barber and Chris Canty. This is the right strategy for a team that went 13-3 last year and holds two first round picks in the draft.   There have been two things that have become extremely overpriced in the NFL: High-first-round draft choices and free agents taken in the first couple of weeks of free agency.   In those cases, the dollar figures are...
Tigers | Santiago reaping benefits of offseason plate work
2008-03-06 22:10:00
Updating an earlier item, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports Detroit Tigers IF Ramon Santiago, who has gotten off to a hot start at the plate this spring, spent most of his offseason working on his hitting approach. He was already regarded as a fine defensive player, but hoped to improve his overall game by becoming more consistent at the plate and taking an approach similar to 2B Placido Polanco by staying within himself and not trying to hit home runs. "Best I've ever seen him swing," said manager Jim Leyland. "He's just laying the bat on the ball. He's not trying to hit it like a big man."
Mets | Beltran still not recovered from offseason surgery
2008-03-06 14:30:00
David Lennon, of Newsday, reports New York Mets OF Carlos Beltran (knees) said he is not capable of stop-and-go running in the outfield and has to teach himself to slide again. Beltran had to build up the strength in his legs after offseason surgery on both of his knees. He only began running the bases two days ago. He will not be clear to play until he can stop after running in a straight line in the field and plant his feet to make a throw. General manager Omar Minaya said he hopes Beltran will be able to play at some point next week, but Beltran is not as optimistic. Beltran is able to hit because of a hitting program he participated in during the offseason.

Vikings Final Offseason Need: DE
2008-03-04 18:38:00
Entering this year’s off season the Vikings needed to fill major holes at DE. A total lack of the pass rush last year and unexpected health complications have left the Vikings scrambling. Last week the Vikings addressed needs in pass coverage and at WR by adding a deep threat in Bernard. It has been an extremely active offseason, one that included the hopes of signing Justin Smith from Cinci, but the 49ers jumped in and nixed that deal. This leaves the Vikings still searching for answers at DE in an offseason John Clayton from ESPN has deemed a Winner for the Vikes and 4 other teams (Browns, Jags, Eagles, Fins). Going into this years free agency period ESPN ranked 41 available DE’s with 4 of those clearly a cut above everyone else. Those four are: Jared Allen, Chris Canty, Antwan Odom and Justin Smith. Allen who rated out at 88 signed a franchise tag deal worth about $9 million. Smith rated out at 75 just signed a 6 yr deal worth about $7.5 million/yr. Smith was ...

A quiet offseason?
2008-02-19 23:39:00
It's been long enough for me to doubt even well documented suggestions that the Redskins will take it easy this offseason. Surely they have reason to do so, as the team is now only 3.8M over the cap per PC, though I think he's counting 11M of Chris Cooley's salary as guaranteed which, as far as I can tell, has yet to happen (but we all know it will). Steve Czaban has an unusually coherent rant here where he discusses a number of topics, our proclivity for offseason wheeling and dealing to marginal success among them. First, though: I'm not saying that dead cap money is fatal. A recent article pointed out that the Giants actually led the league last year in that stat -- $18 million -- and it worked out pretty well for them, didn't it? So obviously we're going to win the Super Bowl. To clarify what Steve is saying, dead cap space doesn't necessitate failure, but it can't (doesn't, shouldn't, wouldn't) correlate with winning. All things equal teams want less dead cap space a...

First arrest of the offseason
2008-02-19 00:37:00
THAT I CAN THINK OF, ANYWAY Everyone knows that when football players aren’t on the gridiron, they’re usually getting into trouble. The South Carolina Gamecocks are certainly no exception. Pre-game partying and drunken fights in downtown Columbia are just a couple of recent examples. Now add to that getting busted for smokin’ pot: South Carolina receiver Dion Lecorn was arrested at an apartment complex and charged with marijuana possession. The 19-year-old freshman was released on his own recognizance after spending the night in jail. He was suspended from the team, athletic department spokesman Steve Fink said. A police report says the player from Ocala, Fla., and two other men told police they had been smoking marijuana Sunday night in a car at the complex, about 10 miles from the university. An officer on patrol smelled the marijuana when she came over to the car to tell the men to turn down the music. Police said they found a burnt marijuana cigarette in the ...

The Best Subtractions of the Mets Offseason
2008-02-08 20:07:00
Lots of teams improve their rosters by adding new players, but the Mets have made a few moves to eliminate people from their team that has actually had more of an impact than adding some players. Here's a list of the top people that the Mets have let go this offseason that will greatly improve the team:1. Guillermo Mota - This is a no brainer. Mota was horrendous throughout most of 2007. It seemed like every time he came in there were at least 2 runs to be given up. Sure the Mets unloaded him for Johnny Estrada whom the Mets quickly dumped, but Mota's removal from the roster prevents Willie Randolph from being tempted to put him in close games. For some reason I have a feeling we'll see Mota ditch pitching and try and become an outfielder. Just a hunch.2. Rickey Henderson - The king of stolen bases will no longer be able to mold the minds of Mets players. Henderson, while possibly the games best leadoff hitter of all time, was not the type of role model you want influencing young ...
Offseason Review
2008-02-05 22:09:00
With the Giants' pitchers and catchers ready to break for spring training in 9 short days and no Giant news to report on (besides the steroid debacle), I figured now would be a decent time to recap the offseason, although there wasn't much movement on the Giants' front:Who's Here: CF Aaron Rowand (Phillies)Who's Gone: Barry Bonds (FA), Pedro Feliz (Phillies), Ryan Klesko (FA)Aaron Rowand takes Bonds spot in the lineup and in the outfield which helps this team's defense significantly, but losing Bonds' bat and not adequately replacing it will have this team struggling to score runs, even more so than last year. As for Feliz and Klesko, both are very replaceable and neither were high priorities for the club at the end of the year. Feliz was in talks with the Giants for most of the winter, but the sides never seemed to get to close on anything. Losing Feliz and Klesko means a lot more ab's for Rich Aurilia, Kevin Frandsen and Dan Ortmeier which is a good thing. The loss of Bon...

Offseason plan is off base
2008-01-30 00:05:00
The current issue of the Sporting News has had a section the past couple of weeks titled "Offseason game plan" for each of the teams that dropped out of the playoffs. This week the Green Bay Packers are featured, and the analysis is disappointing.According to the Sporting News, "The club has about $24 million in slaray cap room and only one significant free agent -- DT Corey Williams -- but it's unlikely G.M. Ted Thompson will go on a spending spree. He doesn't need to accumulate draft choices as he has the past three years because he has a lot of young backups waiting for an opportunity. Thompson's best bet is to go for one big-name free agent like Seahawks CB Marcus Trufant or Bears OLB Lance Briggs."The Sporting News is certainly right about the Packers not needing to accumulate draft choices. Thompson is likely to sit on his choices and not trade any away. It's also possible that the Packers will go after a big-name free agent with all the salary cap space they have, but it'...

The offseason has begun
2008-01-07 18:52:00
The season is over, the king is dead, etc. An impressive and unlikely postseason run was cut short on Saturday by the Seahawks. Little comfort is had by suggestions that the game was closer than the score, though the sentiment is appreciated all the same. The Redskins ultimately lost by three touchdowns, 21 points -- dumb luck, that. Even if we were winning by the slightest margin possible in the 4th quarter, a team is evaluated in whole by how well it plays through four quarters, not three, and we didn't finish. Todd Collins returned back to earth with a subpar game. He completed 29 passes on 50 attempts in a windy stadium, which I thought was too many pass attempts. His 266 yards was just a hair over 5 YPA, which ain't good. Both his 4th quarter interceptions were returned for touchdowns, though much credit goes to all 11 offensive players who failed to make the tackle, especially receivers. Among them, Antwaan had the best game with a healthy 10 catches for 94 yards and a touch...
Quarterback Offseason Analysis
2008-01-03 18:18:00
Let's get it out of the way, the part of the team that gets all of the focus at all times is of course the Quarterback and with Donovan McNabb as our Quarterback that couldn't be more true.I underestimated the real impact that McNabb's 2006 torn ACL really would have on his play this season. Once the news started coming out throughout the offseason that McNabb was getting back on the field, he worked his way through training camp, on and on, I had full confidence that he really was going to be able to overcome any struggles his return might bring him. In one sense he did do just that, McNabb did not miss a game due to his previous ACL injury all season, but along with that throughout the beginning of the season he was just not the same player. As much as it was talked about, the mental aspect of returning from such a serious injury, I still felt that McNabb had enough will power and determination from recovering from previous injuries that it wasn't going to be a problem. My thin...

Dolphin Nuggets: QB Talk; Offseason Look
2007-12-13 06:01:00
More QB Talk So now we now that it will be Cleo Lemon starting on Sunday.  But that's not very surprising to me.  In fact, I've been hearing from various sources that Cam Cameron wanted to keep John Beck on the bench all year and let him learn.  However, that changed when some of the veteran defensive players starting calling for Beck to play due to how well John was performing on the scout team.  Then when he got the chance to split reps with Cleo, John was outperforming Cleo, making the calls for Beck even more distinct.  I'm also hearing from sources that there may have very well been pressure put on Cam by upper management to start Beck rather than sit him down the entire season.  And if that is the case, then it's very understandable as to why Cam has decided to go with Cleo.  I may not personally agree with it, but I can now understand it better.   And very quickly, I just wanted to do a simple comparison of these 2 QBs and how effic...

What an offseason
2007-12-01 00:39:00
Hey TSF readers, I am back to lay some more baseball insight into this fine fine blog. Back in July I wrote a post judging the trade deadline deals, and I'm back to look at what has gone on this offseason so far, and what could potentially take place.Santana ManiaWe all know that the best pitcher to throw a baseball since Roger Clemens was in his prime is on the market, but where will Johan Santana end up? This whole situation is about to get very interesting, because not only are the Red Sox and Yankees the only realistic options out there, but no one knows if they're actually trying to trade for Johan or just jacking up the price for the other team.I say that the Yankees and Sox are the only real contenders because unlike anyone else on the current trade market, Johan Santana controls his own destiny. He can veto a trade if the team the Twins agree to terms with doesn't give him the extension he wants (rumored at around 23-25 million per year for 5-6 years). This makes this...
