From the ruins, Chinese begin to rebuild lives
2008-06-02 15:44:00
Like Su, China is already trying to look ahead after the magnitude-7.9 earthquake. Reconstruction has started, even as the communist government attempts to feed and shelter about 5 million people left homeless by the massive disaster. Shopkeepers who lost years of investment are plotting how to get their businesses running again. The government’s open response may ...

BCS: bungling, corrupt and stupid
2007-12-03 15:07:00
Sun rises in east. Dog bites man. Mike Tyson gets arrested. Bowl Championship Series fucked again. Any other stunning, never-saw-that-coming headlines I need to include here? Once again the BS BCS, the NCAA’s laughable insult to the very concepts of competition and moral decency, has failed, and this time they’ve simply outdone themselves. They finally managed to get LSU, a more than worthy contender, into the “championship” game, but the flagrant back-room conspiracy required to do so was ridiculous. Let’s examine some of the nuances of this year’s college football travesty. If not for an obscene choke job in Morgantown Saturday night the best team from the best conference - LSU and the SEC, respectively - would not have been allowed to compete for the national title. That the BCS somehow got that part right only proves that sometimes things work out despite the system, not because of it. The best team in the second best conference - Southen C...

Fossil NCAA Ohio State University Leather Hobo From their NCAA collection, Fossil has brought to us some beautiful and inexpensive leather Hobos. I, of course being from Ohio, have come to embrace this adorable Ohio State University Leather Handbag. This gorgeous bag features a front pocket opening, single strap and a top zip closure. The multiple leather panels on the strap feature various OSU logos making this handbag game ready! Okay, so if you?re not a big fan of OSU, don't worry, Fossil's NCAA collection features 9 different teams with a total of 26 styles to choose from. This hobo sells for $118 and is available in Black and Espresso. I have to say that Fossil handbags are top quality for a good price. I bought a Fossil bag and matching wallet over a year ago, and it still looks as good as the day that I bought it. Now that's quality...
The Ohio State University is # 1

No, I’m not just talking about the AP NCAA Division I football standings (but yeah!) I’m talking about the biggest University in the Nation—for the 2nd year in a row.  OSU always seems to be in at least the top 5.  This is a main reason why the Columbus Housing Market will always be relatively ...

1.The San Diego Chargers Norv Turner managed to turn a 14-2 super bowl bound team into joke. L.T. can’t run the ball, Shawne Merriman had 2 tackles last week..TWO TACKLES! This is the same guy who had seventeen sacks in 12 games during the 2006 season. They’ll still making the playoffs, but you think this charger ...
You don't have to hate other groups to love your own
2007-08-19 22:31:00
SAN FRANCISCO ? Shiite vs. Sunni. Red state vs. Blue state. Immigrant vs. native. While it may appear that conflict is an inevitable part of interaction between groups, research actually suggests that fighting, hating and contempt between groups is not a necessary part of human nature, according to an Ohio State University professor of psychology.?There's still this belief that a group's cohesion depends on conflict with other groups, but the evidence doesn't support that,? said Marilynn Brewer of Ohio State.?Despite evidence to the contrary, you still see this theory in the research literature and in many textbooks.?Brewer has spent much of her career studying ?ingroups? ? the groups we belong to ? and their relations with ?outgroups? ? those groups to which others belong. She discussed the nature of these intergroup relations in her invited address Saturday Aug. 18 in San Francisco at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association. The address was in honor of Brewer...

I’ve written quite a few posts about the paradox of ethanol; the idea that it appears a seemingly powerful alternative fuel, but one that comes with significant knock-on impacts to the global food supply. However, I am no expert, so I decided to track one down for an interview to learn more. Tim Haab is an environmental economist at Ohio State University who's been spending a lot of time digging into the ethanol issue and came up with the term “Ethanol Dominos” to describe the trickle down effects of ethanol policy on food markets.Tim also runs a website Environmental Economics where he explains the economics of environmental issues. 1. Briefly describe what you do?I am an environmental economist at Ohio State University. That means I apply  economic reasoning and models to environmental issues.  Much of my work focuses on the valuation (placing dollar values) of environmental good and services when markets fail to do so.  But I also have interests ...
