2008-05-30 06:42:00 I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull last weekend and enjoyed it. There’s been a hue and cry from the 30-something internet geeks about “implausibility” (as if the other films were plausible) but I think it’s mostly a “don’t mess with my childhood icons” reaction. My kids were shocked that Indy was so old, but they weren’t expecting it. They’d only seen the first three films in the last couple of years! Personally, I was happy to see Harrison Ford gray and wrinkly and still sexy as hell. (OK, you young folks can all say “ewww” right now and get it over with.) But the best part? WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW, SKIP TO THE VIDEO. OK, it’s this. Indy gets married. And not to some young buxom blonde, oh no... he marries a lady of a certain age whom he had a relationship with decades ago. That’s an implausible but satisfying ending. A while later, I realized I have b...

2008-04-18 06:19:00 My kids are very much used to my wild and hardly believable stories about an era in the very distant past when I was young. They can barely imagine world where families didn’t have video players and computers, where TV was black and white, and eight-year-olds could walk downtown and watch a movie without supervision. However, we did have amazing old technologys like record players and typewriters and wringer washers that are quite beyond my kids’ understanding, the discovery of which added slightly to my credibility. One day in the car, I was telling them the titles of some of my favorite books “when I was your age”, and Gothgrrl said, “They didn’t have books when you were a kid!” Hmm, do you think maybe I’m overdoing it? Survivor vs. Survivor The b3ta newsletter said: Last week we asked for stories revolving around mix tapes you'd made for people, despite loads of our younger readers not knowi...

Grandparents
2008-03-18 05:08:00 When I was a kid, I saw my grandmother as an old woman. Now I realize that at the time, she was younger than I am now! She wore support stockings and cats eye glasses and had her gray hair rinsed with bluing. And my other grandma? When she was my age, she was already dead. Things have changed, but I don’t know whether they’ve changed for the better (OK, that part about still being alive is better). Baby Boomers are the grandparents these days. Or even Generation X! When I had a real job, there were two women I worked with who were both 12 years younger than I am, and they both have grandchildren. One had kids very young, the other married an older man who already had grandchildren. And here I am, with kids I can’t send home to their parents. Because I’m the parent. But I’ve never exactly fit in with the normal scheme of things. My kids don't know any different. For all they know, all parents ask their children to read the small print for them! Emergenc...

Old Age
2008-02-13 06:09:00 Many times I’ve read about how old folks are happier. Young people wonder how that can be, considering your looks fade, your energy falls, your career ends, your kids move away, and you have more health problems. The older I get, the better I understand. Old folks have learned to let go of things that aren’t important, and focus on finding happiness in what you have. After all, you’re only as happy as you decide you’re going to be. There’s no profit in worrying about things you can’t do anything about, which includes regret about the past. And there’s no point in stressing about things in the future, when all we’ve got is right now. Young people stress about decisions that will affect the rest of their lives, while old folks are busy just living theirs. And I don't care what you say, Harrison Ford still looks pretty damn good to me! Hip Hop Grannies (via I Am Bored) Wu Ying was in her sixties when she fell in ...

Old Age...
2008-01-03 18:19:00 I've sure gotten old. I've had 2 By-pass surgeries. A hip replacement, new knees. Fought prostate cancer, and diabetes.I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts.Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation, hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends.But... Thank God, I still have my Florida driver's license!I see you! Don't forget to leave a comment and have a great day. :)

Old Age
2007-12-26 22:04:00 Gah! It?s so troublesome to write something after a week. Not because you don?t have any topic, but you have so many that its extremely confusing. So I am just going to get into it, dive straight in and sort everything out later. Considering Christmas and New years being probably the most hot topics around, we aren?t going to read about that over here(for a while). But I may use some small references regarding Christmas here and there. Old age. I was thinking about it a few days ago? everyone has pondered on this question, ?What will I be when I am old?? Usually they refer to careers, I took it in the literal sense? when I am say, 80, how will I behave? Turns out it?s not a pretty picture. Let?s compare today?s older generation with the future one so you can understand what I am trying to convey. Old guys, most of them anyway, are so sweet, nice, dignified. They have class?listen to nice music, have impeccable manners etc. You ever listened to some of their recor...

R.I.P.—Shanahan’s Scoring Succumbs to Old Age After 19+ Seasons
2007-10-18 04:03:00 NEW YORK—Brendan Shanahan’s goal scoring ability has died after more than 19 highly successful seasons in the NHL.The attending statistician, Nomar Goles, pronounced Shanahan’s scoring “dead” after a final but futile effort to resuscitate it during the waning moments of the Rangers 3-1 defeat to Ottawa last Saturday.“Mr. Shanahan’s goal scoring ability had been in a steady state of decline for nearly a year now,” said Goles. In his final 38 regular season games of 2006-2007, Shanahan scored only 7 goals on 154 shots—a shooting percentage of 4.5%. In this season’s first 5 games, Shanahan has scored 0 goals on 32 shots, including a goalless 13 shot performance against Ottawa on his “goal scoring deathbed” last Saturday.“At the end, his vital statistics showed no signs of life,” said Goles.Goles was also quick to point out that Shanahan’s concussion from last year was not a contributing factor to his scoring demise. According to Goles, in the 29 games prece...

Old Age Sex Problems
2007-09-20 06:37:00 What are the common sexual misconceptions prevalent among the middle aged men and women?Men harbour the misconception that increasing age and excessive use may lead to weakening of the genitals and end in ‘seminal bankruptcy’. Because of this misguided belief, they observe sexual abstinence. One should remember that it is disuse which leads to atrophy and not the use. As a man grows older, he walks slow, he talks slow but he expects that his erection should not be slow! One needs to remember that this is a normal phenomenon. Impression that “one failure in making it means an end to sex life”. As a result, many men move from effective sexual functioning to various degrees of impotence. I always emphasize that occasional failures are common and failure does not mean an end. Women harbour the misconception that menopause marks the end of sex life. Menopause merely marks the end of a woman’s reproductive career and not the conjugal career which can continue upto the end of one...

What are some of the myths and realities of old age?
2007-08-28 03:32:00 The aging process begins the moment we are born. As we grow older, wear and tear take their toll. With age, there is a gradual loss of lean muscle tissue and bone mass. If there is too much bone loss, the bones become brittle and are more likely to break. The hunched back that sometimes afflicts the elderly is not due to poor posture, but is the result of tiny fractures in the brittle vertebrae of the spine. However, not all health problems of the elderly are caused by old age. Upon visiting her doctor for a pain in her shoulder, one great-grandmother was told: "Well, you know, that shoulder is 83." She snapped back: "So is the other one, but it doesn't hurt a bit." Furthe examination revealed a severe sprain.Much of the aging process can be slowed by proper nutrition and physical activity. Men and women over 65 who took up a regime of exercise and weight lifting actually increased their muscle and bone mass. Many older people are more sensitive to the effects of medication than when...

I stand there for 20 minutes, and it dribbles and hurts. I have to go over and over again." The 85-year-old said, "The best thing that could happen to me is if Icould have one good bowel movement. I take every kind of laxative Ican get my hands on and it's still a problem." Then the 90-year-old said, "That's not my problem. Every morning at 6 a.m. sharp, I have a good long pee. At 6:30 a.m. sharp, I have a great bowel movement. The best thing that could happen to me would be if I could wake up before 7 a.m."

Frequent Brain Stimulation In Old Age Reduces Risk Of Alzheimer's Disease
2007-07-11 11:25:00 How often older adults read a newspaper, play chess, or engage in other mentally stimulating activities is related to the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. For the study, more than 700 people in Chicago with an average age of 80 underwent yearly cognitive testing for up to five years. Participants were part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal study of more than 1,200 older people. Of the participants, 90 developed Alzheimer's disease. Researchers also performed a brain autopsy on the 102 participants who died. The study found that a cognitively active person in old age was 2.6 times less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease than a cognitively inactive person in old age. This association remained after controlling for past cognitive activity, lifetime socioeconomic status, and current social and physical activity.Researchers say the findings may be used to help prevent Alzheimer's disease."Alzheimer's disease is among the most feared consequ...

Old age home for captive elephants in Kerala
2007-07-05 12:33:00 &-nbsp; &n-bsp; &nb-sp; A rehabilitation centre for aged elephants has been planned in Kerala, state Forest Minister Binoy Viswam said Thursday. An ideal forest spot would be identified soon for, Viswam informed the state assembly today. &-nbsp; Taking note of incidents of elephants turning violent during festivals, a scheme to impart scientific training to mahouts has been drawn up, Viswam said in a written reply. The wildlife department had taken steps for effective implementation of Kerala captive elephants (management and maintenance rules), which had laid down norms for the upkeep of the jumbos. The owners of elephants had been instructed to obtain health certificates from veterinarians before taking the animal for festival parades. As part of the elephant census, the owners had been asked to register their jumbos with the respective district ...
Having kids causes old age
2007-06-26 18:59:00 There's been a lot in the news lately about the scientific community's research on aging. If they can identify the factors that make people age, scientists say it will make a big step toward longer lives for all of us. At the risk of putting a lot of scientists out of work, there's really no big mystery. Having kids causes old age. I don't have a lot of studies, charts, and analytical data to support that. All I do is offer myself as "Exhibit A." Before I became a father, I was a young man. My stomach was flat, my skin was smooth, and my body parts did not creak. Then my first kid came out of the delivery room. I became an old man on the drive home from the hospital. My back went first. Their mother got the stretch marks, but I got the slipped disc from loading 700 pounds of port-a-potties into the trunk of the car every time we took a trip that lasted longer than half an hour. After 8,000 miles of horsey-back rides across the kitchen floor, I had blisters on my palms, calluses ...
